I am heading out to Hunting Run for the first time tomorrow. I was hoping to get as much info as possible, since I know little about it. I will be fishing it with my little brother who doesn't really fish so I would like to put some hawgs on the end of his line.
You can PM me if you'd rather not make this public knowledge. Also, any basic info always helps, water clarity, temps, where the fish are in the spawn cycle...
I will be fishing right after all this rain so that could help or hurt, we'll see I guess.
Thanks for any help guys.
I am thinking that all the cold rain may make for some tough fishing, I could be wrong. Good luck though and let us know how you make out.
I haven't fished it since the 6th of this month. I may go there tomorrow or Wed depending on the wind forcast. I'm guessing that the water level is up some and may be muddy in some coves. The bass and bluegills were spawning in the same areas. The most productive areas for me have been from mid-lake to the dam in the very back of the coves.
The planned lake size is 420 acres so if it is windy or you try to cover most of the lake, take an extra battery.
You can view my fishing reports at fishingva.com which include the water conditions when I was there.
Also PM sent
Wayne thanks for the report. I will let you know if I have any luck. Those are some good comprehensive reports on the other site. Thanks for the heads-up.
Ron, I agree, rain may throw a wrench in the excitement, then again it might put the fish in a feeding frenzy... we'll just have to see.

That fishing VA site seems like a really good idea, too bad it looks alittle dead =/
Yeah, its a fairly new site, 3yrs old. A great idea, all it needs is a few of us to frequent it every now and then and it maybe we can breathe some life into it. I mean the VA guys more or less claimed this section of this forum. Lots of fisherman in VA
Anyhow, I am going to launch a site in a year or so and when I do, it will be quite nice. Hopefully by then I will be living near Lake Fork, TX
It will be nice.
The fishingva.com site replaced the former fishinmusician.com site after the creator left the state. The site owner was a contributor on the former site just as I was. It serves it's purpose quite well as the older one did. Most of the users are more interested in fishing and just Virgnia waters than the extra BS that is found on most other fishing sites.
Wayne, I love your reports. I've been checking daily for the next one. Was happy to see a report this morning as i was thinking of trying to get out there this weekend. Thanks again for spending the time to provide us with those reports!
Thanks ado124, I won't be posting any on Va. waters for a couple of weeks. I'll be fishing JEJMoe's future home lake next week and some of the following week.
There are a lot of uneducated fish at Hunting Run, take advantage of it while you can. It should be highly productive for the next couple of years.
Good luck out there Wayne. And thanks for the tips out there @ Hunting Run.
I'm about to head out there today in about a half an hour, anyone have any tips?
probably too late but my friend and I had some luck with wacky rigged green/white senkos. We tried some other things but didn't seem to work and the random spurts of wind wasn't helping much.
If anyone pulls up my 2 rods/reels from midlake could you return them to me please? :'(
They aren't expensive combos but money is money! Thank goodness i didn't have my baitcaster with me.
Thanks again Wayne for all the tips you gave me, I'll probably have to ask you a few more things because i think i was doing something wrong.
Sorry probably too late for tips but I plan on going out there tomorrow. How'd you end up doing today?
Not too great . My friend lost A LOT, maybe cuz he's never fished soft plastics before but yeah. We found one spot where we got a hit every cast for about 10 cast. There were a few other boats out there but didn't see anyone really haul in anything great. We were pretty surprised to see so few boats on the water and even less stay (maybe only 4 others on the water when we left).
The water is about 68-71 degrees. Stained with less than 4ft visibility. I saw a few smaller fish suspended on underwater structure on the depth finder but couldn't get them to bite.
I noticed more fish on the fish finder at the upper part of the rez but didn't get to fish all the way down to the Dam.
Only about 10 fish boated, 5 missed today. Seems pretty low for hunting run but we were probably doing something wrong.
My other friend fished it yesterday with some pretty good results despite the windy conditions. He told me he was catching them off bright colored flukes despite the clear water conditions and out off underwater structure outside coves.
Good luck out there. I think the forecast calls for bluebird skies tomorrow so might be tough! Let me know if you find my rod and reels! ;D
I got there late like, 6:45, and I stuck right to the left of the boat ramp, lost one, didn't feel big, then left.
Only had about an hour.

Did you run into the rediculous traffic like i did/saw? Man do I hate 95 and South and it's random traffic.
Nah, no traffic.
I live smack dab between Mott's Run and Hunting Run on Rt. 3 :-D
I like Mott's alot.
LUCKY! I would love to live that close to two reservoirs and the Rapidan and Rappahannock.
I'll be giving it my second go round tomorrow. A little more time on the water so hopefully I can put together a pattern this time. I will be dragging the wife along so hopefully we can catch some fish. I'll let you know how we fair.
Anybody get out yesterday or today? I got out with my dad yesterday, lake was real crowded. We ended up landing about 15 or so. A couple of 2's and I got a 3 lber. Others were mostly dinks. Didnt bother with pics for the 2 lbers, probably would've with the 3 lber but I had hooked her deep so just wanted to get her in the water quick. Water temps were about 78. A little slow but not a bad day. Probably gonna try Occoquan again this week, maybe twice.
78 degrees?!? Wow.
I need to get down there and check that place out. Is there a good amount of fishable shoreline or would I have to have a boat to make it worthwhile?
Theres some shoreline by the boat ramp. Not a ton but some. They do rent out jons though, idk the prices but you might be able to find it online or maybe someone on here knows
i think the rate for a jon boat rental was $8/hr w/o motor. can't remember how much it was with the motor.

This answers my question if the facilities are open... Do you know if they offer half/full day rental rates? Personally $8/hr seems kinda ridiculous...
I only saw hourly rates posted up. I was looking for an all day rate as well.
I got out there Monday also. Only a few hours, with the wife, and it was very windy, so fishing was tough to do.
Anyways, Each caught a dink and missed about a dozen. Hooks too big.
Bigger fish were on the offshore structure but all the visible spots were crowded and no fishfinder on the rentals.
Rentals are $6 an hour with motor and battery, not bad, for a minimum of $18/3 hours.
This is non-resident county pricing.
The motors are nice. 12V 54# thrust. It is all flat and mostly open fields so the wind kills you.
What is the boat launch situation at Hunting Run? Can I back a trailer down a ramp into the water? I have a heavy Jon boat and carring it isn't an option, I need either a field or ramp that I can drive it right in the water. Please advise 8-)
it's a gravel ramp, people launch with trailers all the time.
Went out on Sunday, me and my friend held a little tournament together. It was his middle brother and I, versus my friend and his little brother. We fished for about 4 hours, and my friend's middle brother and I caught a total of 9 fish (which we only kept the 5 biggest ones; culling), but they were all dinks...and my friend and his little brother caught 5, all dinks too.
Needless to say at the end of our friendly tournament, we weighed in all of our fish and compared the total weights between us and it was a tie! 2 pounds 9 ounces each!
It was a productive day, wish we would have caught some bigger ones though...
The only thing I have to complain about is the price of the daily launch and fish fee. $10 to launch and fish for one day.....rediculous!
Should have asked how much the annual pass was...
This site will give you all the permit and fee information:

Welcome back Wayne! a little off topic but how'd your trip turn out?
Thanks for asking ado124. The fishing was tough for everyone. I didn't catch any double digit bass this time, but several in the 5#- 6# class. Very windy most days with air temps in the mid 90's. I finished 5th in the two day tournament.
