Its official! The Richmond, Virginia dogwood trees have bloomed.
And they are beautiful.
So the bass are officially on their beds.
About time.
Thats what im talking about......did you try your luck this weekend @Sam? I went to private pond on yesterday, bass werent on the beds but was active. I caught 18 bass and 2 rainbow trout. Biggest bass was 2 pounder. "Big Bertha" wouldnt take my bait for nothing
Been in bloom since Friday here on the Peninsula.
Some, not all. I've got one that's a little behind
the rest. Hope to get out some time during the
week.
Dogwood in my yard is full bloom as well! I stopped by a neighborhood private lake from shore on Friday and caught my new PB! 6.54lbs on a spinnerbait! I also got another bass about half that size on a chatterbait.

Nope. Had too much to do around the house and we have a strong storm heading our way for this evening.
We have dog wood everywhere in my part of Mississippi. Bass are on beds and my line and hooks have been wet for a few days now. Caught quite a in the 3-6 pound range. No giants yet...

Man congrats @MassYak85, I caught a few on a spinnerbait. But nothing on the chatterbait. They was mostly hitting the rattletrap and square bill crankbait for me.
They are moving in on the Potomac. This was Saturday.
Beautiful fish @TOXIC, you did a lot better than me. The big boys just wouldn't take my line Saturday

Yea being from MA being around hybrid strain largemouth is a bit of a treat haha. That one crushed my old PB by over a pound.
I'm headed down that way this weekend (to fish the Chickahominy). These temperatures are a bit cold for this time of year. Do any of you think it will cause the bass fishing to be tougher?

No, not much.
Guys have been doing well on the Chick.
Of course, if they are on their beds they may not be feeding this weekend.
Are you going to the dam area?
No specific plans to go to the dam area, but may end up there. Do you recommend that area? What is best strategy for bass on beds? I'm guessing soft baits like lizards, but not sure. Thanks

The dam area seems to have the bigger bass.
You have to see the beds and then aggravate the males to bite.
Use lizards or trick worms or Senkos to aggravate the bass.
The males will pick up your baits and move them out of the beds.
As for the females, they will be holding to cover in the sun, if possible, resting after the spawn.
Just remember, the spawn can last for 60-days depending on which bass start to spawn during the spawning season early or late. Not all bass are on their nests now, but will be in the future.
Take your time and look for the "white patches" on the bottom to find the beds.
Good luck.
Sounds like great advise. I appreciate it.
Hopefully gonna put the yak in at the Powhatan Wildlife Management Area this weekend, I’ll keep my eyes out for some bedding bass. Hoping for a new PB, wish me luck!

Good luck.
Be careful out there in any of the rivers or streams. The recent rain has them all flowing really, really high and there's a LOT of debris flowing. Some big TX's on the Potomac this weekend and I'll be right back out there in the chocolate milk.
Yeah, I have a few friends that have been tearing up some bass with size to them recently. 5-7 pounders being pulled out of smaller ponds and lakes with spinnerbaits and wacky worms in shallow water.
Fished the Chickahominy last weekend and the fishing was tough for everyone. They had a big tournament there over the weekend and the mornings were in the high 30's temps. Our boat caught four fish all weekend. We decided to try live bait and that made up for two of the four fish. One was a heavy sow bass at around 8 lbs. That was a nice highlight.
Hey guys...have any of you seen any bass on beds as of yet?
We suppose to have a really good 4-day break in the weather this weekend, what game plan have you all put in place?
We are loading up the boats and heading down to the Chick river Saturday. We have some friends down there and since the Potomac is still cold and muddy, we are heading South for what have been reported as some big ditch pickles being pulled out of that river. If we get on em' I'll post up some pics. I am pretty stoked. First real chance at a big fish this year. After that we will concentrate on the mighty Potomac trying to hit the prespawn just right.
As of March 28th the Dogwoods are not close to blooming.
Water temp in One Fish Anna was 47* this past weekend, far from the 60* needed for them to start heading to their beds.
Down on the Peninsula there are buds on some of our DWs.
I'm gonna do a little pond hopping this weekend, hoping to snag some quality fish.
Probably head over to Byrd Park when I leave the office here in a little bit.
Still not seeing too many bass on beds in the small local ponds here in Richmond, Va.
But did manage to snag this male off the bed at Byrd Park yesterday, 3.3 lbs. The Dogwoods haven't fully bloomed yet, so that mean we still have a little time b4 they're locked in, right @Sam
P.S. Check out the bloody tail from making his bed. Fish was safely released back to his location!
Nice catch! Some will be on the beds now, at least down here, I believe.
Was planning on going this week, now I'm not sure I can get out :( ... that
and rain forecast.

What are your pre-spawn and spawning "Go to lures"?
Right now I have tied on is a chatterbait, bubblegum super fluke on a shakey head, 4-inch swimbait with 3/0 swim jig head, Z-Man Big TRD worm in Coppertreuse......and finally tied on the Jackall Ganteral Jr. for the 1st time!!! Hitting the 3 small city lakes in Richmond's Byrd Park after work.

Well, when I had sweet success fishing the spawn (PB 7.5), I didn't
use anything really out of the ordinary (for me). PB was caught on
a wacky rigged 5" senko, earthy color (might have been watermelon).
I caught numerous 5 and 6 pounders over the years during spawn on
senkos and knock-offs. No real success with bubblegum, personally.
But watermelon magic was always "magic", coppertreuse is a great
color, green pumpkin magic, junebug, all great colors. As well as BPS's
Hot Pepper Frog.
Also, consider using a Zoom (or other) lizard wacky, or TX, or drop shot.
Lizards are an enemy and when I tried it years back when they didn't
chase anything, it garnered some hefty strikes and catches .
DOGWOODS HAVE BLOOMED!

Gee, golly, wiz.....you are correct @Sam!
No luck with the shakey head, Gantarel Jr. or Keitech impact swimbait. Well I really ticked them off once I started jigging that ol Chatterbait thru their bed.
Female slammed it first at 4.6 pounds....then 10 minutes later the male smoked it at 3.43 pounds!!!
70 year old man tried to give me cash for the fish, smh....educated him why he shouldn't be eating big bass period and that those Urban Lakes in Byrd Park water quality is horrible.

You da man!
Great catches in the concrete ponds in Maymount.
Keep it up, but watch the weather this weekend.
Keep those cards and photos coming!!!!
Congrats.
