do any of you guys fish here or have you guys fished here. can i launch a jon boat from gravelly point.
I haven't but you should ask Kiko13. I believe he was there recently and should be able to give you some info on the washington channel.
thanks skip2mybass
You can easily launch a jon at Gravelly point. Fish the main channel rocks up and down through there and on the lee side of bridge pilings and you should get whatever you want.

I trust the jon boat has a motor (gas)? If so, great ramp and no problems for you regardless of the tide. Shoot straight accross the Potomac and go around Haines Point and you will be at the mouth of the WC and Anacostia. Stay left and you are in the WC.
Watch for big boats as you cross but there will be less of 'em now since it's after Labor Day.
What is your target?
Ernie
i don't have the jon boat yet but i will get it with a trolling motor because of gas prices. i plan on selling my video games which i have a lot of to buy the boat because i now hate video games. i'll probablly have to ask my parents for some money too.
anyways i plan on fishing for largemouth bass like i usually do from the shore around there. and is there a good fall striper bite around the washington channel and gravelly point in the fall?
You need to pick your days if you are going to launch at Gravelly with a jon boat/trolling motor combo and fish the Potomac and WC. As VolFan said, you can fish the rip rap on the VA side and some bridge pilings but the boat waves will rock you!
I know there is a ramp up the Anacostia but I don't know where.
Good luck!
Ernie
You can also launch at the sailing marina just south of 4 Mile Run and Reagan Airport off of the GW Parkway, might be a little calmer down there unless you're dying to fish up around DC.
is there a good falll striper run from haines point to the 14th street bridge?
I'm not sure there is "fall striper run" but there are some stripers in the river at this time...mostly schoolies.
could i get em near the sea wall or should i be casting out in to the open. i plan on using a strike king series six in sexy shad.
and are there any snakeheads around gravelly point and the 14th street bridge?
no but you can get ice at the 14th street bridge, cheap too. :
Too soon?
Make sure you have your DC fishing license and boater safety certificate if fishing DC waters.
i'm 14 so i don't need a lisence but my dad has one.
and what do you mean pigsticker? :-?
Really??!!!! No one was around here in the 80's?? a plane crashed into the 14th st. bridge due to ice on the plane's wings.
I really am sad for a generation that knows nothing of its past :-?
Or I am just a pop culture machine gun :
also I said "too soon?'' as part of the joke as well, because the crash happened 26 years ago, this is really high brow stuff :
That plane crash got Howard Stern kicked off of Washington DC radio for quite some time.
Not too soon, just kinda poor taste.
QuoteThat plane crash got Howard Stern kicked off of Washington DC radio for quite some time.
Yeah I know, His old stuff used to be very funny, just getting women to do degrading stuff isnt funny :-/
This one guy(long time ago) called up and said "howard why dont you play any black musicians?" Stern replied"Eric Clapton he's black aint he, ZZ top their black right?" ;D too funny
Volfan?? most of the joke is that I said "too soon?" and it happened 26 some years ago it was a rhetorical queston, but thats ok you know
alot about comedy, you think carrot top's funny : ;D
The fact that I said this is real high brow stuff was sarcastic because I know it is in poor taste :
also one of my favorite comedians is Andrew Dice Clay who made millions being lowclass
and you will not find many people that loves the story about the four bystanders who jumped into the icy water that day and never were seen from again as much as I do my eyes water every time I think about that :'(

Ouch. Touche
i'm 14 ;D
Quotei'm 14 ;D
?? I am 17 :-?
So......
yeah but i'm stupid ;D no it's just all i ever think about is fishing so i never watch tv or listen to the radio. thats my life.
QuoteReally??!!!! I really am sad for a generation that knows nothing of it's past :-?:
That about says it. :-/
i've heard of the crash i just didn't know the details
I'm headed to Gravelly Point for the first time tomorrow. I have an 18' OB runabout. The water is too shallow for the boat around Leesburg. Any comments or advice will be very welcome. TIA
Nick, after launching my bass boat there for a "Take A Wounded Soldier Fishing" tournament a couple of weeks ago I would not recommend launching in a jon boat with just a trolling motor. The water can change quickly out there and it can get dangerous for a small boat. I found that out and was fighting swells and big waves in my bass boat. I would find another place to launch.
I agree. The water there can be quite rough from all the boat traffic. I would launch at pohick. Its very calm and a ton of fishing close to the launch area.

Bass boat? I thought you had a 14 foot aluminum jon boat?
Thanks guys.
Rally, where did you get that information from? It is incorrect.
is that a 9.9 on the back? Looks like a walleye boat, nice set up though.
Hows the Muskie bite at Gravelly? Does that sucker plane? Just kidding, 14ft 9.9 myself. 4-Stroke so the gas mileage is great! Buddy of mine packs the big gun. Anyways I wouldn't launch without an outboard, too much current.
