Elusive Fishing Spots In And Around Atlanta, Ga. Feel Free To Share 2024

fishing user avatarLouisiangler reply :

Although a native to the swamps and bayous of Louisiana (hence the name), I have been in and around Georgia, particularly Atlanta, for quite some time, and for my own personal reference as well as that of others in the Bass Fishing community, would like to compile a list of some pretty decent fishing spots IN and around the Atlanta area. There are a few spots in the Atlanta area, and a lot of small lakes and pond south of Atlanta in the Fairburn and Fayetteville areas. Here are a few spots I have been able to either fish in personally, or know of from other fisherman that have pretty decent Bass fishing. Feel free to share any information on any places in Atlanta you may know about.

1) Clarence - Duncan Park (Fairburn, GA) I used to play tennis at this park in the late 90's, and did not associate it with fishing until recently. A trusted source and fellow fisherman shared with me that park restocked the pond a few years back and now has a decent Largemouth population. It IS a small area, and is certainly more suited for off the bank fishing, and nothing extensive, although from what I understand it is actually much deeper than it appears.

2) 3 Hole Golf Course (Tyrone, GA) I have not had the chance to fish this Lake personally, but again it is recommended by a trusted source and respected fisherman. Supposedly this Lake holds Bass, Bream, Sacalait (Crappie) and Smallmouth as well.

3) "Hidden Lake" (East Point area) Due to some pending circumstances I can reveal the 'actual' name of this Lake as it not technically open to the public, but neither fully private. (if you are interested in fishing it contact me for details) This Lake is currently my favorite place to go because it is relatively secluded and holds Largemouth, Smallmouth, Crappie, Bluegill, Redear, Catfish and some HUGE Carp! Due to the 'undefined' zoning of this Lake I feel it may only be a matter of time before it is shut down completely and sold to some one who probably wouldn't know a Zara Spook if it hooked them in the nose. But for the meantime, it is a great place to catch some Bass. The average size I catch are between 3 - 6lbs but I have seen others pull a few 8 - 12lbs out too. If anyone is interested in fishing this hidden gem in the South West Atlanta area, just message me privately and I will be glad to fill you in on the particulars.

4) Twin Lakes (Fulton County) Nice from what I have heard, never been. Probably worth a try though as nearly ALL the small Lakes and pond in this area contain a decent Bass population, unless they lack a healthy prey fish population.

5) Twin Bridges (Lawrenceville, GA) Cost $10 to fish, but supposedly does have a few Bass and Catfish. Looks like more of a 'family fishing' spot, and not a real avid angler type of a spot. But hey...where there is water....

......

more will be posted as I acquire more 'hands on' information on them. Thanks, enjoy.

The flint river is not too far from there. There is great smallmouth and shoal bass fishing there.

fishing user avatarPondBassin reply :

Don't write off small ponds. I found a 1 acre pond over the summer on Google earth and visited it with a friend. Literally first cast within 5 seconds, he had a fish on and we caught fish all summer and I caught my PB there. Slowed down a little as it got cold, but looks like it will be good again as I just visited it and saw a couple of bass roaming the flats looking to spawn.

I was visiting a friends house just last week who lives right in front of (or behind?...depending on where you are using as a reference point) a creek that connects to the Flint River. He told me that his house flooded a few years back because the creek is right behind his house (like 80 - 100ft) so of course the never-dying and curious fisherman inside of me said, 'hmmm? Fish?'. So sure enough I walked down the street until I found a clearing big enough for me to get through with rod and box in hand. The water was very muddy (due to a recent rain - Friday night/Saturday morning, if I remember), and I tried to see if at least I could get a few bream to bite some live worms I had. No bites, just snags, but I wasn't surprised because the water was really shallow and muddy. Although I did see a nice school of minnow....and minnow point to bream and bass. So I know there are fish there, I was just not in a good area to get to them.

Which part of the River can you get to fish at?? My friend lives right off of Tara Blvd. in a small neighborhood on the West side of Tara. From where is it accessible?

Thanks

Its been a few yrs. since I fished the Flint but if u wanna wade fish Sprewell bluff off hwy. 35 just south of Thomaston has excellent opportunties. Also there is some good access through Big lazer creek WMA below the hwy. 36 bridge! Seen some 18-20 inch shoalies holding there . Never got to fish too much on the upper Flint. You can contact the Flint Outdoor Center for more info and maps..I think they offer shuttles for people doing float trips too.

hope this helps.

Ok thanks. Much appreciated.

I like this idea. I sent you a pm. As I come across nice spots I will contribute to this thread. Unfortunately, right now I do not have a secret honey hole. Just fish West Point Lake or a couple spots on the Hooch.

fishing user avatarTEC reply :

Can anyone recommend a spot to take my 5 yr old daughter that is exteremly low pressure and somewhat close to Hartsfield Airport? She REALLY wants to go fishing but I'm having difficulty finding a spot to take her.

Thanks!

fishing user avatarmiris32 reply :

I too am a native New Orleanian. I stumbled on your post and dusted my gear off once I started reading about the spots in South Fulton. . Hadn't heard the term sacalait in years! Thanks for sharing the tips about local ponds, Sent a PM about the East Point Lake (or the lake I believe you are talking about). If we aren't talking about the same lake, I am interested in fishing the lake you are referring to.

I fished the upper lake at Twin Lakes late yesterday evening and caught six 1 to 3 pounders in less than an hour. I will definitely try the lower lake sometime this week and let you know what I find.

Lake Frances has also been producing some small but feisty bass. The property is in foreclosure so you will have to access the lake from Mason Road. Not sure if the lake is part of the real estate deal, and the agent hasn't returned my calls. I used the Fulton County GIS system to see who the listed owners are.

Geaux get em!!!

fishing user avatarBayouFisher reply :

I am Fisherman from Baton Rouge, getting back into fishing. I grew up fishing from a boat and that is what I am used to. Currently I do not have access to a boat so bank fishing is my only option. Finding good fishing spots in this area has been a task. Thank you for making this post.

P.S. Just hearing the word Sac-a-lait made me homesick

fishing user avatarehurckes reply :

Hi, I just stumbled across this post. I am going to be spending bits of the next several months in the Atlanta area and was interested in the name/location of the secret spot. I'll be here too long to not try to squeeze in some bass fishing. Incidentally, I am from Chicago and not familiar whatsoever with the bass fishing down in the south. Can you offer me a few tips on lure choices down here for this time of the year? I do alot of topwater (frog) and worm (Texas) up North but realize the tactics may differ down here. It seems I may get a few extra weeks of warmth and good fishing that I'm not used to up North. Also, the mere mention of your catching 3-6 pounders on average is nothing at all like we see up North. 6 pounds is a huge fish for us. I'm excited to fish here and appreciate any advice you may offer.

BTW, just got back from a New Orleans vacation a month ago. Love that town.

Take care.

fishing user avatarFat Bass reply :

Can you give me more info on Hidden Lake? I'll be in Atlanta in 10 days and need a place to fish for "Fat Bass"... Is the lake still open?

fishing user avataralexczarn reply :

Anywhere of this places on the South side of Atlanta? I am going to be staying about an hour south of Atlanta next August...

fishing user avatarTim S. reply :

Have you tried Lake Varner?( bout 25 miles east of Atlanta). A friend who fishes there all the time has caught 10 fish that went 10 lbs. or better, including one that went 13-4. It is a watershed lake, so electric motor only, no gas motors allowed at all, even if you don't use it.

fishing user avatarWDinarte reply :

Probable tooooooo far, but I was at Stone Mountain for the Thks-Giving w-end and you guys have a great " big" lake around that park.

I din't try my luck but looks great.

fishing user avatarrabidsquirrel reply :

Another Louisiana transplant here... Lived in ATL (Midtown) for a number of years...

Lake Clara Meer in Piedmont Park has some lunkers in it. You wouldn't think so by looking at the lake and the foot traffic around it (Sometimes there is a lot of garbage floating in the lake, but nothing major), but that lake has a ton of fish in it. It is a managed lake (Georgia Fish and Game Department).

http://goo.gl/maps/FzFe1

When I lived a few blocks away from that lake, it had very little fishing pressure as no one really thought to fish it. I guess sometimes the best kept 'secret' fishing spots are the ones staring you in the face!

I caught 6 and 7 pounders out of it, and knew a guy that showed me photos of him catching many 10~12 pounders out of that lake (Usually under the dock, throwing big jig/trailer combos). If you see a dude on a 10 speed, bike shorts, no shirt, and a single rod riding around that area, it is the same dude I met a few years back. He's a very nice gent and he'll fill you in on how to catch lunkers out of that lake.

fishing user avatarGodfatherOfSeoul reply :

Just wanted to revive an old thread on here for the south atlanta fishing gurus out there. Id love to trade stories on some ponds and resevoirs without anyone feeling like their favorite honey hole is going to start being over pressured. No need to give your secret spot but Id def love some help on some of the lakes under I-20.

I can def help with Shamrock Park, Duncan Park, Glen Emerald Park, George Sparks, Horton, Kedron, Lake peachtree, Oakley Township, Clara Meer, Walker Lake, Flint River, Flying Biscuit Pond, Huddleston, and Luckys Lake is all I can think of right now. Ive walked the bank on all of these and have put my boat in all the ones that are ok for non gasoline boating anglers. If you have any general questions, Im glad to help.

fishing user avatarGodfatherOfSeoul reply :

Does anyone have any info on...

1. Lake Peachtree: More so of how has it done with being such a young lake but has Line Creek feeding into it. Ive heard mixed reviews and just hadnt out my boat in there yet.

2. Starrs Mill pond: Im going to try it out for the first time soon. Ive seen a lot of vegetation but any work on what works well. Ive walked it a couple times just to scout and went through a lot of maps. Going to try to punch the vegetation, top water early and just aee how well I hold up in the current.

3. Vandivers Lake: I want to put a kayak in here but was curious if anyone has had issues with the DNR. I heard that they have kicked people out from one person but I still see cars parked there everyday on Camp Creek when I pass and ask and no one has had an issue being cited.

4. Anyone know if City Lake in Fairburn is accessible or private for fishing?

I go to college now in NC,I'm in the Clayton county Riverdale area,I would tell you to try Mundys mill pond off of Fayetteville road. Its hard to access due to the brush and woods all around but next to the dam to it that people fish, there is also a bank next to it,If you have a Jon boat you can put it out there with a little troll motor.I want to try it but I don't have the finances to try it.Hope that helps. You will be able to cover that lake with the boat since there is only like 2 places to fish from on it

Did anyone ever get the information about the secret spot near East Point? I have a pretty good idea but I'd like confirmation.  I realize this thread is really old.

fishing user avatarda_linx reply :

Hello folks!

I’m interested in this post too due to an incoming visit during this august to Alpharetta.

Any good fishing spot would be much appreciated!

And any fishing buddy too!

fishing user avatarKrisluvfish reply :

I took a trip to the Twin Lakes area, but I could never locate a place to park or insure that it was ok to fish.

fishing user avatarSouthernbasser reply :

If you`re on the westside of Atlanta, a good place to go is sweetwater creek state park in Douglasville. It has a 215 acre reservoir. There's always people there fishing. It costs $5 to park.
