New To The Richmond Area 2024

Hey everyone,

I am new to the Richmond area, I am from the NoVA area and know the area well. But down down here, I haven't got a clue as where to go to fish around. Any places to check out and such? I don't have my boat on me since it's at my shop in NoVA. I am in the VCU area.

Hey man and welcome,

Since your boat is at home, I would start with places that rent boats like Ed Allen's on Chick Lake. Off the top of my head I think Waller Mill in Williamsburg, Newport News Res, and Lake Maury do as well. Check the VDGIF website and get out there bud!

Coming in the next couple of weeks is the Shad run on the James River. Hit up Bass Pro or any local shop and ask for Shad darts and spoons.

Throw on a slip bullet weight, a swivel, and a 12" leader.

Go to across Mayo Island to the flood wall park and head down river on the rocks. Cast. Retrieve. Repeat. One of the best experiences you will ever have on an on day.

yes, you got Innsbrook, the James river. Check out texas beach and Hollywood cemetry when the river gets warm enough. Also, you can head out to the western part of the Powahatan for the twin lakes out there.

As for NN res. I used to live down there, that place is currently over run with hydrilla now, CRAZY thick. But, Mariners Meseum, Lake Maury is a great place to fish! Check them out on the web and learn what you need to do to fish there.

PS, I just moved from Richmond to Alexandria, LA. Thats why I dont have Richmond as my residence on here.

hey I moved from newport news to just outside richmond last year... check into ed allens/ eagles landing on chick lake you wont regret it although it can be a bit pricy. If you do want to drive to hampton roads there are some great cheap places to get a boat. Lake Maury (Mariners Museum lake) its 4 bucks an hour but you do need to bring a motor and battery (most places need this). Bethel Lake in Hampton is 7 an hour and this is my personal home lake. I have already caught a 8lber outa there so far this year. Harwoods mill is open on the weekends and has alot of nice fish in it. in williamsburg there is waller mill but it has been playing around with rates/ hours so check into their website. Across from chick lake is little creek. If you like striper fishing try this place out. There are also a crap ton of crappies here (been out some days with over 100 caught in an hour) the bass are good (lota 6lbers) and if you know what to do you can catch them. Lastly you could just find a fishing hole on the james. there are a few parks you can fish from and there are some good smallies in it.

Purchase an ADC mapbook of metropolitian Richmond including the surrounding counties.

Look for all the ponds sprinklered around the area.

Many places to fish in this area.

If you are serious about bass fishing consider joining a bass club. You do not need a boat as you can go as a nonboater.

You will learn the local waters and a lot ab out bass fishing.

Also, if you wade the river, be careful! That place does not have the typical contour river bed. I was told it is like a bunch of VW bugs parked next to each other. I would suggest sandals with the heel strap, tighten them up and slide your foot across the bottom of the river (where you cant see the bottom) till you find a safe place to place your foot. Also, for the river, if it's slimy, it's slick! Try 4" weightless junebug senoks around the rocks.

you park next to the innsbrook after hours concert thing in the back of the place keep on going around that road i have caught and 6 pounder out of there this year i suggest using a xcalbier crank bait red or the sun fish color works good the bigger ones there sponding right now so u run it across there bed and they tear it up it is kinda hard to catch them takes a couple trys but its a good place to fish big fish in there just gotta give it time.

Or you can cross Nuckols Road on Cox Road and park by the Snagajob building and fish Lake Rooty.

Get the ADC Mapbook of Greater Richmond and look for the ponds,.

Yea what are the rules/restrictions to Innsbrook, if any...? I do work in Innsbrook, but do not know about parking at other businesses, etc.

Also, does the lake above Lake Rooty hold any fish? I'm talking about the one behind Markel Plaza, and it crosses into a little pond on the other side of Cox Rd, behind some condos/apartments?

I was looking at the map and saw wildlake wanted to know if I could go there and do I need to have a pass or just my regular license to fish it, also where is the best place to park. Thanks for any info. If anyone else can help would appreciate it.

You can park anywhere in Innsbrook.

You can fish any bodies of water in Innsbrook.

As for the ponds by the condos, good question. I have never fished them but they do look tempting.

Fish on weekends and after hours so fewer people will be watching you from their offices.

Get the 2012 DG&IF Freshwater Fishing in Virginia booklet and look up the ponds in Henrico County Park Lakes on page 45. You will be surprised at what you can find in that booklet. You can find the booklets at Green Top, Tackle Express, Gander Mountain, BPS and Wal-Mart.

Bryan Park's 12 acre pond is another option on the north side of the river. Just watch for "wierd" people and you should be OK.

Get the ADC mapbook of Richmond or Greater Metro Richmond to find these places and a lot of other locations to consider fishing in the metro Richmond area. Without the mapbook you will continue to be lost and not find places to fish.

To fish Wilde Lake you have to live within one of the surrounding subdivisions... You can fish it, but people will usually come out and hassle you if you are not from there or if you don't have one of the "cards" they issue to people to fish it.

Also they closed (locked) off the parking lot that people used by the spillway; other than that, there is no parking that I know of for Wilde Lake

yea thats were i us to park and i went there not to long ago and it was closed but idk u can probably fish on the other side were there is like a little dock in the corner next to launderdale

I am going to Res this post as I am new to the area as well. I have been wanting to try the rock hopping the James for a while now. Use to love to do that on the Roanoke growing up.. Where are the best places to park to get access to the rocks between Mayo and Belle Isle? Can anyone provide detailed locations of where to park/fish from say Mayo up to Bosher Dam? I live /work at Innsbrook and I will say that there are posted rules around the lake and also park use rules at Innsbrook.com. First its Catch and release only and no boats. you cannot be on the trails after dark. Its open to anyone with a license.

The rain we are getting will put the Historic James River off limits and make the river a chocolate milk shake until the excess water subsides.

Get an ADC Mapbook of greater Richmond and view the areas you want to visit and look for places to park.

DO NOT LEAVE ANY VALUABLES, GPS UNITS, CAMERAS, WALLETS, CELL PHONES, SPORTS EQUIPMENT AND ANY THING OF VALUE IN SIGHT IN THE CAR.

Pony Pasture is a safe place to park and walk about half mile down the road and wade into the river before the Z-Dam. Great smallmouth and catfish fishing in this area.

ALWAYS WEAR YOUR PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICE.

WEAR FELT SOLE SHOES.

FISH WITH A FRIEND.

The James River is very unforgiving and it can become a terror in a blink of the eye.

Yeh I was down at Belle Isle last weekend with the river above 5 feet and knew then that it was not a place for faint of heart.. Reminds me of SM Fishing on the new up in Giles. It would eat you up and spit you out too but I still love to go do that. It sure did look fishy in some of those holes..I am goign to give it a week or two for the levels to drop and hit it early one Saturday.. If your interested I will post up here
