Hey guys - wondering if anyone in WV has gone out for some bass fishing on the I-79 lakes (Sutton, Burnsville, Stonewall). Just looking to see if there has been any activity before I head out Saturday. Trying to avoid Summersville at all cost.
I fished Plum Orchard on Wednesday water was 50-51 degrees. Caught two off of slow tapering points with a jerkbait. There were 5 or 6 other boats on the water.
Thanks for the reply....it is very hard to get WV bass information.
I have never fished Plum Orchard. Is there any size to the fish there, besides the bluegill?
Thanks for the info
Depends on the time of year and other variables, but we’ve caught solid bass there.
I would think one of the lakes would be doing good right now unless they are solid mud
Why avoiding Summersville?
Last week the water temp was 51.. Yesterday it was 45. All fish activity was basically shut down.. When it does hit around 55 though the feed will be on like donky kong. The Robins are back and the very first few trees are starting to bud.
I live right beside Stonewall. But I'd go to Summersville this time of year instead of Stonewall.
What's the water temperature at Stonewall right now?
44-51 depending on where you're at.. As always, the Vandalia end looks like chocolate milk from all this rain and snow we've been getting.. The Roanoke end was clearing up, but it's back to muddy too. Lake is pretty much back to summer pool for the second time in a month.
When do you think the bite will pick up at Jacksonville End? I'd like to get up there and fish it soon.
I hope to find out Saturday afternoon. I live on that end.
Good luck I am going to hit Plum Orchard tomorrow from noon to about dark. Report back and let me know how you do.
As of this morning, the lake is above summer pool. I doubt I go tomorrow. T ball practice in the morning.. Then I'm hoping to put my jackplate on when we get home...
I grew up in Fayetteville. I lived in a johnboat on Plum Orchard in my teens and early 20's..
I spent a few years in WV. This thread brings back memories!
I went to Plum Orchard Wed afternoon and water temp was 43° at the dam and 41° on the upper end and water was a couple feet high.
I did manage to catch one nice one off a point. They seemed to be still holding to there winter patterns.
Can't wait for some warm weather to get the water temps up.
I’m surprised its that cool.. Hopefully the 83 degree day on Thursday and the rain we’ve had has warmed it up some..
Went today like I planned. Launched around 2:30 and stayed until 7 and there were about 14 or 15 boats on the water plus a few yakkers. Suprisingly the water was up to 51 at the dam and 48 on the upper end. I tried jerkbaits, jigs, swimjigs, squarebills, and shaky heads. Not a bite. The other folks I talked to didn’t have much luck either. Bass were locked down tight. You can tell when the water hits about 55-60 degrees the bite will be on. Hopefully next weekend will be when it starts..
I didn't go Saturday, but several of my buddies were on Stonewall Saturday. One of them caught a 6 1/2Lb largemouth. I didn't ask what he caught it on. Wind was steady all day Saturday.
Was he on the Jacksonville end?
Plum was at 61 at the Dam and 58 on the upper end on Saturday. I fished all afternoon and into the evening and couldn't get bit to save my life. All of the bass were out suspended over the middle. It's like they have came up from the winter but haven't yet gone into full prespawn mode yet to come shallow. I did catch one little dink bass right on the bank in the back of pocket that hit a swim jig. He came out of a tiny laydown and hit it like a bullet.
We fished the Buddy Trail tourney at Summersville on the 15th.. Wind was bad all day.. And the fish were deep.. Water temps ranged from 51 to 55 from what we saw. My partner and I are the weighmasters for the WV Bass Federation. So we usually come in about an hour before everyone else to get the scales and stuff set up and ready. It didn't hurt my feelings one bit to come in early that day..
Our Sutton tourney was cancelled due to the high water and all the debris still floating everywhere. Not sure when we'll make it up.
We're at Burnsville this Sunday. No idea how it is right now. It was 14 feet high after the storms.
anyone ever fish sleepy creek lake?
Anyone on here have a 24P 4 blade prop for a Merc they'd be willing to let me try? I recently added a 6" jackplate and 25P Tempest Plus to my boat. They definitely improved the handling and top end speed. But I think a 24P 4 blade would be better for days that my partner and I are fishing a tourney. My holeshot 2 weeks ago was sluggish after we added water to the livewells.
I use my factory prop on my Triton. Sorry man.
Necroing the crap outta this thread, but I feel like this is a better place to ask my question than starting a new thread.
Has anyone fished the southwestern (East Lynn, RD Bailey, Mud River, etc) lakes recently? Are they decent enough to justify driving to? I've always stereotyped them as being poor quality, but I honestly haven't been to any of them in like 10 years. IDK if things have changed, or if they've always been better than I thought and I just didn't catch fish back then because I didn't really know what I was doing.
I like East Lynn in the spring and late fall. I've caught some great bass there in spring and fall. But we no longer use it in any of the WV Bass Federation tourneys. In the summer months, it's more of a night fishing lake for bass, in my opinion.
I left WV in 2013, and I don't know how much has changed, but I liked East Lynn. I never caught any big fish, but there were plenty of small, keeper-sized fish to keep me entertained.
I live right beside Stonewall Jackson. I'm hoping to get on the water tomorrow evening or Sunday morning. Went last Saturday for a few hours and caught quite a few. My 6yr old son caught an 11 1/2" largemouth. His biggest so far.
I've probably give East Lynn a whirl some time later this summer then. Probably after I get a kayak.
Last time I went was about 10 years ago. I didn't catch crap, there were floating patches of garbage in alot of the coves, and I'm fairly certain that there are people living on Twelvepole that straight-pipe sewage into the creek. Gave me kind of a negative stereotype of the area.
What about the southern end of the Guyandotte? Could it be productive outside of trout season? I know around where it empties into the Ohio is allegedly good for muskie, but that's a bit above my paygrade at this point.
