Where Are My Fellow Mississippi Fisherman?! 2024

fishing user avatarbostonsox2904 reply :

Just moved to Mississippi recently and I'm wondering how everyone's fishing is going. I just caught a nice 2lber in the Jackson area.

So you said fair well to the sunshine state? Good luck over there in Mississippi.

fishing user avatarbostonsox2904 reply :

Thanks! My job has me moving all over, but I haven't said my final farewell to good ol Florida!

fishing user avatarDirty South Fishing reply :

Welcome to Mississippi my friend! I mainly fish Ross Barnett Reservoir, Lake Davis, and Lake Kemper. Holler at me if you ever want to fish the reservoir.

I think the vast majority of them are in Baton Rouge trying to get LSU football tickets as they want to see a real college football team play this year.

fishing user avatarbostonsox2904 reply :

Thanks Joe, we should definitely try to get out one of these weekends!

fishing user avatarbrionballard40 reply :

Fishing is great where I live(Kosciusko) if your in the Jackson area you've got it made if you have a boat of some sort. All sorts of lakes within a 30 minute to hour drive. Just get on google maps, you'd be surprised but neighborhood fishin around that area is phenomenal. If you haven't ever fished out of a kayak let me know and I have access to several private lakes within Madison that have a 5-6 lb average fish(I've caught several 7s and 8s. A buddy of mine pulled back to back 11s.) Anyway welcome to Mississippi.

fishing user avatarNuffsaid23 reply :

If you had a weekend free and you were able to go over to calling panther lake in crystal springs, you could find some good bass right about now. I mainly fish ross Barnett too but with it's huge size and how divided it is, it's hard to find the largemouths on a regular basis. In calling panther, my first location is always on the channel. I have found crankbaits can pull them up if you are on the edge. There are lots of baitfish like shad and bluegill so choose your colors to look like them. In the mornings, find a spot where the are a cluster of the dead trees in the water. There's a couple that are up closer to the boat launch and I have a lot of success with that. One more thing to try is burning a spinner bait near the trees the hang over the water. I don't fish there much but when I do those are my main tactics that pay off for a great day of bass fishing.

fishing user avatarHubtech reply :

Hey there, from around hattiesburg.  all of our WMA lakes are empty this year lol.

fishing user avatarbostonsox2904 reply :

Thanks for the replies and advice. I got out to Calling Panther lake this past weekend and trudged along the bank. Caught a little 1.5lber to make my day worth it, but I got infested with chiggers. Those f***ers are nasty!

Oh along the bank golly gees. Any snakes? The only thing about calling panther is it's basically a swamp. I forgot to tell you about top water frogs. Stupid me. With all the underwater trees last time I took my jon boat I hacked some holes in the bottom but I treated that thing like a price of trash. I think I'm going on not this Thursday but the next so I'll be interested to see if any of the info I gave was junk. Since I've been in Georgia all summer playing baseball I haven't gotten to go fishing but them three times:( I will be living on the lakes for the rest of July. Keep me posted on how the fishing goes for you and any more questions you can PM me if you ever felt the need. Starting July 6th I'll be fishing everyday so I can post the most accurate info soon.

Talk soon

Thanks brionballard. Having a little difficulty learning what works best in Mississippi but I'm enjoying the adventure. My best luck has been on Mirror Lake on Lakeland and Calling Panther. It's intimidating trying to fish on a lake as big as the Reservoir, but I'm gonna try checking out the smaller lakes around Madison.

Right on Jacob. Believe it or not, I have never caught a fish on a topwater frog, but with all those half submerged logs I'm sure they're a great choice. I couldn't catch anything on a soft plastic swimbait, so on my way home I tried the trusty senko and caught my fish on that. I also found a couple deep water crankbaits on the bank. Seems like a popular choice. Have you ever had any luck closer to the dam? Maybe we can make it there together before the summer is over. Good luck!

It can be pretty hard fishing close to the dam but not impossible. On the reservoir side i can't manage to catch anything. On the other side of the spill way I gave managed to catch largemouths on buzz baits and chatter baits when the dam isn't open. The big section that you see over the spillway wouldn't be where I would try to fish because of all the recreational boaters and just the huge expanse and no cover. But I'm not saying you won't catch anything though. It's just 20 times harder haha.

Good luck and we'll talk soon.

North mississippi here!

fishing user avatarkstring reply :

Up here in the golden triangle but I fish all over. Love fishing the tenn-tom waterway. Also fish a lot in attala county, the delta, and down in the pine belt.

The Rez has good fish and they can be caught all yr long but a boat would be a huge help. And don't forget about oxbows on the big river...may fish all day with nothing to show or could catch a boat full over 3 lbs depending on the day. That's what makes it fun!

fishing user avatarbassmaster8100 reply :

I live in Madison and spend a few days a week fishing Ross Barnett usually. Not a lot of good places to fish from shore but if you have access to a boat be sure to try up river or Pelahatchie Bay.

fishing user avatarbostonsox2904 reply :

Caught this baby during lunch today. Literally the smallest bass I've caught with a rod and reel. Set the hook and the fish came flying out of the water!

.....Yes. Do I know you? Blacksburg Class of 08, VT Class of (Fall) 2012, History. I noticed earlier that your favorite river was the New River as well, I just now saw your interests include Tech too.

Edit: I just sent you a friend request on Facebook. It's a small world, man.

I just moved to Ridgeland from arkansas so I don't know anything around here or anyone but heard good things about fishing, anyone around that could show me some places?

fishing user avatarbostonsox2904 reply :

I like fishing off of Lakeland drive at Mirror Lake. It has a walking path around it and I've caught a couple nice 2lbers out of there. There's also good fishing at the Ross Barnett Reservoir. I've never tried on foot but I've heard it's tricky without a boat. There's lots of ponds in your area so you may have some luck on Google Maps scouring the area too. Good luck!

fishing user avatarDylanD arkansas fish89 reply :

I cannot seem to find mirror lake where is it exactly
