Fountainhead Last Weekend 2024

fishing user avatarslomoe reply :

Got there about 7 am on saturday. Me and a buddy just cruised around for a while before picking up a few dinks in the grass on spinner baits. Then it started pourin so we ducked in a cove under some trees until it let up. After 10 minutes it cleared up and I notice huge schools of baitfish swimming on the surface. I lost a nice one on the Rapala subwalk in all white. Because I'm not used to walk the dog type baits I switched up to the full size Magic swimmer and would just cast out past the baitfish, let it sink for a second or two and reels at varying speeds. Caught the biggest of the day on a pretty fast retrieve just under the baitfish.

Nice catch :) I'm in the same boat as you with the subwalk. It seemed like a good investment when the bait monkey hit me.

When are we going to fish together again?

fishing user avatarslomoe reply :

I might be on the solo this weekend, but how bout the next?

fishing user avatarNitroMan reply :

Nice Bass!!!!  Im want to go try out Fountainhead soon!!!

fishing user avatarslomoe reply :

Go get em. I havent been skunked since I've been going this summer, but what I have problem doing is catching big fish there.

fishing user avatarMattStrykul reply :

The best advice I can give you is fish DEEP. Yes, deep. If you think you're fishing deep enough, go even deeper.  ;)

fishing user avatarslomoe reply :

Thanks Matt.

fishing user avataronthereel reply :

That's the same way I caught my biggest on Saturday at Fountainhead...throwing into a school of bait fish.  Used a plastic worm though...the idea was for it to stand out.  It seemed to work b/c he inhaled it on the fall

I haven't been out this season to Fountainhead but believe me I remember you stating to fish deep out there numerous times.  Thanks for providing info.

fishing user avatarMattStrykul reply :

No problem guys. I learned the same way as you guys, other people told me. They said fish deep or you won't have a chance. Started fishing a little deeper and did a little better. Then one of our friends was fishing with us in his boat and we were followin him and he was showing us a few spots and we were all c-rigging and we were just tearrrrrring them up. One day that week we probably had a 21+ lb bag fishing between 25-40 feet of water. I've never caught so many 4-5lbers.  ;D

fishing user avatarslomoe reply :

Yea, I caught alot on the c-rig last year near bull run marina, but I was fishing from the bank on a point.

The fish above was caught pretty much in the middle of the rez.

fishing user avatarMattStrykul reply :

The fish in my avatar were all caught downlake in real shallow water about a month ago. We were pitchin jigs into tight cover and got em.

I got out yesterday but didnt have as much time as I'd like because my buddy had to go in early.  In the few hours we were out there we got 6 all on a drop shot.  Nothing real big a few decent keepers but thats it.  I think I'm gonna get out there again tomorrow but not positive yet.  Matt I'm curious, what type of structure are you looking for when you're fishing in 20-40 ft of water if you dont mind my asking.  I assume you arent blindly casting into 40 feet of water  ;D

fishing user avatarJCrzy4Bass reply :

I'm assuming that lunch money has bought a quality depth finder lol. Either that or it's just the fact that I've seen that these guys fish this place week in and week out and have tons of experience out there. I need to learn fountainhead like all these reservoir junkies.

I get all caught up on all the fallen timber and brush and grasslines out there and fish visually.  I need to get out of that habit and probe for deeper structure/cover.  Problem is I don't have a depth finder or "fish finder" to take with me.  An investment I need to look into obviously.

HAHHAA I knew you would get me on that!!!! I almost hit the edit button and wrote why, but I just decided against it. Remember about a month ago how we had all that rain? Well it made the Occoquan Res. rise about 7 feet. By the day of the tourney, the water was up a good 3 feet, and I felt because of this the fish would be shallow, and up in tight cover. Sure enough, they were.

That's my explaination to the "real shallow"  ;D Sorry for the confusion

We are mainly hitting points and just staying REALLY far off of them. The res is deep (if you haven't noticed) and it's not hard to be in 40 feet of water REAL quick. We would just fish the points with the C-rigs and find the ones that had good cover on them, and then just beat em up. We know what points have brushpiles, rocks, ect....

Jcrazy, We actually only have a hummingbird max 90. It costed 80 dollars on sale, my brother got it for his bday 2 summers ago. I just bought my first "higher level" depth finder a few weeks ago. It is an eagle Fishmark 320. I'm putting it to the test tomorrow out on the Res.

We haven't been fishing there in over a month.

fishing user avatarJCrzy4Bass reply :

Cool, let me know how the new depth finder works out.  My dad just upgraded his hummingbird as well and got a garmin on sale.  We are still getting the hang of it.

Wasn't downgrading your ability at all.  I know you guys can fish.  I read your reports whenever you post on the rez.  Good luck next time out.

I'm gonna try fishing deeper next time out with jigs, weighted plastics, and deep diving cranks.  Gonna work at finding some of those points.  Just gonna take time, that place is HUGE.

fishing user avatarMattStrykul reply :

Yeah, it's really BIG but I'll tell you this...You can sit at Ryan's dam all day and catch fish. I don't like sitting there during tournaments, but truthfully if you want to just go have fun and fish deep and catch em, that's the place to go.

fishing user avatarJCrzy4Bass reply :

Hey Matt if you launch at fountainhead, how long is the ride with a 9.9?  Which direction do you head and how far up is it?  I may try that out next time I go.

fishing user avatarMattStrykul reply :

Ryan's dam is the one to the right, it's the large cement object that has signs on it that says caution submerged structure.

It's about a 5-6 minute ride. I've never caught anything off the dam itself but if you put your back to the dam and cast out toward the other shoreline you will get bit.

fishing user avatarJCrzy4Bass reply :

Haha, Paul Naj and I were pitching into the dam between those posts and stuff one day last week.  I got one bite on my senko but missed the hook.  We thought it looked "fishy" lol.  We tried the shoreline to the left of it on our way out but we were trolling fast and fishing shallower pitching to overhanging shade and stuff.

Now that I know I will definately give that a try man.  Thanks a lot dude.

fishing user avatarMattStrykul reply :

No problem. It's deep between there, but you're actually gonna be fishing a part of the dam. They cut it down before they flooded the res. Last year when the water was down real low one of the guys told me if it got any lower you would'nt be able to get by because you would hit the part of the dam or something like that.  :o

fishing user avatarMattStrykul reply :

Went out yesterday and got em pretty good. Best 6 went 15.12lbs and we caught 9 keepers, 15 fish total.

fishing user avatarslomoe reply :

nice job! What were they goin for?

fishing user avatarMattStrykul reply :

Oh just the usual...... ;)
