Chesterfield,VA... 2024

fishing user avatarLink reply :

Any local pond fisherman here in Chesterfield, VA?

I'm a High School teacher and am off for the summer, looking to meet up with some locals.  Looking to gain knowledge from more experienced fisherman out there.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Yes, lots of places to fish in Chesterfield County.

Get an ADC street map book of Chesterfield County and you can see the ponds. I think Wal-Mart and Staples have them, plus bookstores.

Here are a few suggestions to get you started.

Behind Stony Point Shopping Center off Huguenot Road

The private pond across from the larger pond at behind Stony Point Shopping Center. Although it says no fishing just fish it. Never had any problems with the locals - so far!

Behind the DMV off Trade Road in the Southport Industrial Park - try the large pond as the smaller pond may not have any fish in it

Pocahontas State Forest where you can rent a small boat beginning at 10 AM and fish Swift Creek Lake or fish from the shore or bridge - Boat ramp is behind the swimming pool area in the park

Swift Creek off Genito Road has places to fish

Gregory's Pond in Rockwood Park off Courthouse Road near Hull Street

Lake Salisbury off Oakengate Road - look for the path to the dam by the new house that was just built

Pond behind Bethany Place Baptist Church on Providence Road - use topwaters or fish weedless

Centerpoint Office Park off Charter Colony Parkway

Pony Pasture if you like to wade

Along Riverside Drive on the James River.  Park and fish from the shore

Dock at Robious Landing Park on the James River by James River High School

Pier at City of Henricus at Dutch Gap. Get live bait at Castaways on Jeff Davis Parkway and then drive down to Henricus and walk the trail to the Barge Pit

Fishing for catfish at Henricus is an option, too.  Slow but it is fishing

Avoid golf course ponds unless you get permission as the course staff can get upset if you fish without permission.

Also, try the ponds at the Arborutem until you get thrown out and the ponds at Moorefield Office complexes.  Moorefield is a more friendly place to fish. Small bass in those ponds but they will hit your baits.  Like Senkos.

Forget Gateway Office Park off Midlothian Turnpike as there are no fish, at least to my knowledge, in their small pond.

There is a pond at the southern end of Stonehenge Golf Course that I would like to try.  It is off Rexmore Court. I have never seen it other than on a map and would think it would be a super place without any fishing pressure.

Ponds over at Innsbrook Office Complex off Cox Road, including the two when you cross Nuckols Road in Henrico County, are good bets, too. Worth the drive.

Lots of ponds in various subdivisions as you will see in the ADC map book.

So get that map book and check out all the blue ponds and start fishing and let me know how you do.  There are other guys on this site who fish Chesterfield County so mabye they will throw in their two cents.

Good luck.

Thanks Sam!

So far I've done the Reservoir and made my way over to the pond at Lucks Lane the other evening, had some success.  I've done the Google Map thing and made my way out the other day.  Gregory's Pond I couldn't find access to, whether it be in the neighborhood part or through Rockwood Park.  Suggestions?  Thanks again Sam!

I live in that area and have fished the lakes. They have small bass, nothing spectacular. If you drive down the rode into Wyndam and fish the lake at the Dominion Club, there are big bass and catfish. My friend pulled a 9 pounder out of the lake and the biggest catfish there is 45 pounds.

fishing user avatararmesjr reply :

Lake Salisbury is member only, and they have been very strict this year.  I have been asked to leave once.  I have a friend who is a member and everytime we go they check his lake membership.   When i lived in salisbury, they never checked.  i think since with google maps you can see every body of water that they have been having a lot more non members show up.  If you go, you may be asked to leave.

Stonehenge Golf course pond is not really worth fishing. I have fished it several times, and just caught a couple little guys.  It is pretty shallow, and way too much vegetation.

fishing user avatarLink reply :

Thanks guys.  I was at Lucks Lane last night and caught three small bass, nothing special.  I'm dragging my pregnant wife out tonight with me if the rain passes.

I've caught 2-3lbers there at innesbrook, Do you need membership or anything to fish the Domino club?

fishing user avatarFishingJames reply :

No, you just can't fish on the golf course but there are plenty of places to fish from the other side. You know your in the right place if you see houses that look like castles.

fishing user avatarSimonSays reply :

Thanks for the tip James! I think I'll give it a shot sometime Tuesday

fishing user avatarHokieDJ reply :

Dominion Club is private property.  No Tresspassing sign there.  I was there for about 20 mins and the locals didn't bother me.

fishing user avatarFishingJames reply :

Yeah, I've been fishing there for a year and have never been told to leave once. Went there to day caught a couple of solid 3's.

fishing user avatarSimonSays reply :

Went there today (Mon) and hit 4...3 on a tube and 1 on a heddon torpedo.   Some guy was telling me he pulled a 12lber from there...

fishing user avatarFishingJames reply :

I would believe it, there are some decent fish in there.

Here is the picture of a nice one my friend pulled out of there.

fishing user avatarSimonSays reply :

ooo nice, is it true you're allowed to fish from the golf course side after closing?

fishing user avatarFishingJames reply :

I'm not sure if it's exactly "allowed" but I do it anyway, they don't seem to care.

fishing user avatarSimonSays reply :

hmmmm, wading in the james or fishing that pond...dam that's a tough choice

fishing user avatarFishingJames reply :

Haha, hot day today, would rather be in the James. :)

fishing user avatarLink reply :

Well since a boat is out of the question right now with a baby coming into the family this November and I really want to stop fishing from the short at Swift Creek Resevoir and I want to get out in the UPPER James River my wife has said she was alright with the idea of me getting.

Fish Cat Streamer XL

http://images.cabelas.com/is/image/cabelas/s7_319534_imageset_01?$main-Medium$

$400 bucks off of Craigslist, includes a bag of some sort and a pump.

Should meet my needs, sure I'll look lame but it could be fun.  Would ya'll trust this in the upper James area? Hugenot area (my buddy canoes up there and said it's calm)

fishing user avatarLink reply :

Now my buddy has me re-thinking it, he's telling me to just get a kayak.

Suggestions?!?!?

fishing user avatarFishingJames reply :

Honestly, I would get a kayak. The fishing club I belong to is about 50 yards away from the Hugenot Bridge. My dad and I take our kayaks out almost every weekend and it is some good fun making the drifts down the river catching the smallies. They have kayaks that are rigged for fishing and you can get them fairly cheap and you can customize yours with a lot of accesories. I have an anchor, rod holders, paddle holder and a drift sock. I have even seen people put fish finders on their kayaks.

All very good kayaks.

And a place that I go for my kayaks and accesories is http://www.paddleva.com/

Very reliable and in the Richmond area.

fishing user avatarSimonSays reply :

I'd go for a nice kayak, you could wait for a good deal to come up on craigslist or buy new.  Get a sit-on-top.

fishing user avatarLink reply :

Thanks guys!

I'll continue looking

fishing user avatarLink reply :

To my Kayakers....

Decent kayak? used for $200.00

fishing user avatarSimonSays reply :

I'd stick to a sit-on-top kayak for fishing, more space for tackle and storage but many people do fish from sit-ins

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Simon, you mean there is a difference in them?

Can you flip over in one easier than the other?????  :D  :D   :D

fishing user avatarSimonSays reply :

Lol Sam's right, there is a big difference in stability, there's 2 types Primary and secondary stability.  Primary is how easily the kayak wobbles, while secondary is how much wobbling it can take before actually flipping.  Sit on top kayaks are generally wider leading to greater primary stability, it can wobble far from left to right, but low secondary where once you get to the point of flipping it'll dump you out and you'll have a hard time flipping back over.  Sit in kayaks are about the opposite depending on the type you choose.

In general sit on top kayaks are more stable, also if you get a larger sit on top kayak you'd probably be able to stand up in it.

fishing user avatarA.Do? reply :

Can you stand on a Sit in?

You can try =P I don't think you can as well as on the sit on tops.

fishing user avatarUpson reply :

If you are looking for another place to fish try walton lake off walton park road.  It is pretty good fishing.  try fishing the lili pads and also try fishing the big tree that is in the middle of the lake.  you will probably need a kayak or a canoe though because the shore around the lake is all residential property
