Not really, pea's are usually caught on fast moving lures. This particular fish, I was stalking for a while and it committed on lure.

I was talking to a guy that said he catches them on chicken livers in Lake Ida.
I met another guy, a claim and probably not reality, that said he caught 15 pounders in Weston, he told me where, but not knowing the exact spot I'm not driving 50 miles each way.

Its possible but it may be a stretch Snoonalot, those pits are deep, she might have escaped the cold weather. How long it takes them to grow that big.

Wow!! 15lbrs!! that fishing spot alone then technically holds several of the state records for peacocks. That isn't worth 50 mile drives if you have access to it Snook?

I'm guessing the fish are more like 5# not 15, so I'm not going, lol but this is the place. The canal behind Weston elementary school ( there are about 6 schools), the one with no fence for the parking lot. That's a long way to drive when I don't the exact school.

I tell you what. I work in Weston a couple days a week. I will scout the area and tell you which one. I only have about 2 weeks to try the spot because once school starts access I am sure will be limited. I will keep you posted Snook.

I thought the genetics of the Butterfly Peacock, which is the strain in Florida, topped out at 7-8# with the record of 9 being an outlier

Lou hopefully you hook into it if u find that spot how big would you say the one you caught was and is that your peacock PB?
That's the main reason why I want to go fishing down south so I can form after some peacock bass the colors on those fish are beautiful sucks we don't have them here in Jacksonville

Florida record for peacock we saw was a tad under 10lbs which is a big peacock bass for us down here in Fl. But 15lbs?? a little far fetched. Could be a simple misidentification of fish weight, and that occurs often. But many of those lakes in West Broward do hold some nice big peacocks. One of the members on here who lives out in West Miramar avatar is 10lb peacock. I have not seen him post for a while. As far as the weight of the pea I caught, my scale was acting up but by my estimate that fish was pushing 4.5 to 5.5lb. Fought like 7lb LMB, but with 30lb braid and great reel it was no match, I just waited it out until it was ready to be lipped. Even then, it still fought. Very feisty fish.

Yea man I can't wait to hook into one of them when's the best time of year to catch them? Or do they generally follow the same pattern as largemouth as far as spawn and such?

Peacocks love the hotter weather. In the dead of summer they are more active at 2pm then they are at 6am. I don't think there is any possibility of a 15lb peacock down here. 10lbs i could believe, even thatll be a stretch. Most of the ones i catch are in the 1-3lb range. Every once in a while i MIGHT get one about 4. I couldn't imagine a double digit pea. They are absolutly ferocious!

I just got in, from checking out the lake. I wasn't going to fish I just wanted to look. It's small lake. But then again, Weston has lakes all around it. Getting too them is highly restricted because its private residential. This particular lake did not look attractive, however there are two other ones that I have been eyeing for a while that others have fished from another forum site with great success. When ever I fish those, I will report. Mg4u2nv, the lakes out in West Miramar are loaded with peacocks. The only problem is again, like Weston, a lot of those lakes are private residential. But very big peacock have been pulled out of there. 8-10 lb pea's are not unheard of. 15lb is a real stretch.

The bass resource member that caught that big peacock from his backyard is SoFlbassaddict. He can vouch for big pea's in West Miramar.

Its been a while since i've been out to west miramar. i do have a nice little spot in southwest ranches west of 75 south of griffin that always seems to produce a pea or two. Never really attempted to fish in weston, everything there is always so restricted. i'll have to get on google earth and search out some spots in west miramar. I bought a silver/black x-rap last week for spillway snook that i think can work out just fine. Good luck to ya Lou!

I went to a canal and a pond today in cooper city I think, beside I-75. No luck.

Rvadog, in the case of the pea I caught. I was sight fishing for that one. When I do that, they are sometimes good for 2-3 casts and then they sink and move on. This one stayed around. They spawn in the summer. Sometimes more than once. Many years ago when I was kid I found peacocks easier to catch. Now they seem harder to catch. Then again I have not dedicated myself to strictly peacock fish.

Peacocks are different than LMB in the way the chase a lure, most of the time they don't give up until they are hooked. I would compare them in that respect more to a jack crevalle, they fight similar too with constant headshaking, you always know when you have either species on the line.
Whether I'm inshore fishing, bass or peacocks in freshwater I'm always looking for signs of bait, fish, and birds working, so for me sight casting plays a big part in my fishing.
I catch more peas in the winter for the simple fact that's pretty much the only time I fish for them. I do not enjoy the humidity and insects in the summer, I keep my freshwater fishing to local spots and short outings. I keep busy fishing for other species that interest me.
