NOVA guys. I have to do it....... 2024

fishing user avatarflippin4it. reply :

After seeing Ron post up his PB the other day, it looks like I'm going to hit Mercer in the morning. I lost a MASSIVE bass and went back a week later and I caught my largest of 07 almost to the day of Ron's PB. My luck of catching larger fish lately may pay off. So day break tomorrow it is.

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

Good luck Rob, I hope you catch a a hawg.  I want to see a picture if you get one.  They were hitting crankbaits for me Wednesday however they may have moved to the back of the lake.  I didn't catch any Thursday or Friday on the crankbaits.  I saw a guy in a canoe catch a couple of hawgs over at the stump field the last couple of times I was there (Thursday & Friday).  He was nailing them on a black jig with a trailer, I don't know what kind of trailer because I wasn't close enough to make out what it was.  The water was pretty clear the other day however with the rain I am sure it will be stained tomorrow.  I would meet you there but Jay and I are launching the boat on Burke Lake in the morning.  Once again, good luck.

Ron

fishing user avatarflippin4it. reply :

Ron, I got a new phone and it takes great pictures. Where do I get the hardware to down load it?

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

I just send mine from my phone (via cell phone service), buy my service covers sending text and pictures..  If you can't do that then go to the carrier that you bought the phone from (i.e. Verizon, Sprint, AT&T etc.).  Let me know how you make out today.

fishing user avatarflippin4it. reply :

Ron, it was a dinkfest. Finished with 11, 10 came on a Kanami Flash in blk with blue flakes and one on a spinnerbait. All but one about the size of my hand and the one about 1/2 a pound. I was the only angler at Mercer.

fishing user avatarHung up Paul reply :

Had I checked the site last night I would have joined you.  Oh well.  I didn't fish at all this weekend.  Too much yard work to be done.

fishing user avatarcatspit reply :

You weren't the only angler - I was there but I had similar luck as you even though I was there nice and early. I caught a couple of largeish smallmouth and 1 small largemouth on the mepps, but enjoyed the lake and being outside. The stumps seemed really shallow to me at the back and I was worried about getting hung up all the time. I'll probably go back with some texas worms next time.

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

Catspit, unless I REALLY overlooked something, there are no smallmouth at Mercer.

fishing user avatarflippin4it. reply :

I never saw another angler and I was there from 6:25A.M. until 12 P.M................... Oh and Dan is correct about the smallies.........

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

Dan you are right, there are no small mouth bass at Mercer.

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

yeah, I was pretty sure about that but didn't want to say anything for certain and get caught with my foot in my mouth.

fishing user avatarcatspit reply :

I'll take the foot in the mouth for you then :) Looks like I'm still learning the differences between the species out here, sorry about that. Also sorry our paths didn't cross as I'd certainly appreciate talking to someone with local experience to learn a bit more.

Did you not see the family fishing from the boat? Looked like the place to be, although now I'm worried I was at the wrong lake. .

fishing user avatarflippin4it. reply :

I stand corrected, there was a guy with his 2 boys. But, that was'nt fishing. That was struggling.... ;) . With that kind of wind and no help paddling, that had to suck. I guess catspit was there. But where?

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

I can imagine that must have been brutal out in a canoe.  My boat got blown around quite a bit today due to the wind gusts.

Rob, was the water stained at Mercer?

fishing user avatarNOVAbasskid reply :

hey guys I was wondering if there was a place i could launch my jon boat. I had taken a lap walk around the lake last year and didn't see anything, walked that one road but just looked like a maintenance road and the gate at the front of it was locked off. I guess a canoe or kayak is the only boat you can fish out of at mercer?

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

You can launch a jon boat if you can carry it to the lake.  I would use a canoe if I had the opportunity,

fishing user avatarsnowslider reply :

So where is the best place to park when bank fishing Mercer? I looked on findlakes, but didn't see a good parking spot. I see Lake Mercer Park listed just off of Bressingham Drive, but there doesn't look to be any parking there, just private houses.

I'd be coming down 7100 to Hooes Rd. (I think). Is there anywhere to park off of Jeffry Farm Rd.?

fishing user avatarA.Do? reply :

just park on the gravel lot off the shoulder of Hooes Rd and walk through the gate. The Dam is but a short walk away.

fishing user avatarsnowslider reply :

Excellent! Thanks for the info.

fishing user avatarknownfactor reply :

i have yet to check out mercer i might go tomorrow morning and see what all the fuss is about, recommend any spots? or is it small enough to fish the whole thing?

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

You would have to walk a few miles if you were going to walk all the way around the lake. I have walked around it a few times, it takes a few hours with stopping here and there at different spots. Good luck and let us know how you do. Post up pictures if you catch any. I would probably work the stump field that is where the warmer water is.  Oh yeah,   to the forum Knownfactor.

fishing user avatarknownfactor reply :

oh yea...how do i get there? im coming from centreville/fairfax area..i cant find it on google maps

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

Rt123 to Hooes Road or Rt132 to Silverbook to Hooes Road. There is a small dirt parking lot on Hooes Road.

Ron

fishing user avatarflippin4it. reply :

Ron, the water had it's normal tint except for the stump area which was tinted/muddy.

As for parking, I have always parked off of Wagon Trail Lane off of Huntsman. It's a walk, but it's flat and you see alot of deer and fox. It's puts me on the side/end of where I like to fish.

The guy in the boat last Sunday was in a jon and he had a set of wheels for it. I have put a canoe in there before and fished the stumps until I was blue in the face. I hooked a monster but never got a look at it, around the stump she went and "snap" end of story.

fishing user avataronthereel reply :

I found that the best spot to park (if you want a short walk to the stump fields) is the circle between the single family homes and townhomes off of Deerlee.  If you're coming from 7100 onto hooes, make that second right at the light; Valleyfield, then left on Deerlee.  Don't park in the visitor spots at the THs, you could get towed.

Hey Rondef,  where did you find that hawg?  Doesn't look like you were in the stump fields from the picture. Nice fish!

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

Thanks, I was throwing a crankbait from the side of the lake.

fishing user avatarTrevor in Burke reply :

Rob we used to have a set of wheels for my boat, way back before it is as heavy as it is now, but if you have wheels is there a path wide enough and smooth enough to move down? we should make some new wheels and get my boat into hard to get to places that would be good with a boat I.E. mercer, hunstman, and woodglen.

fishing user avatarflippin4it. reply :

The path is a gravel road, smooth and flat. Once I get my/drum's jon welded,  i'll be slinging it in all those places. My jon is the lightest I ever seen. All I need is 2 bike wheels and mount them to a axle and strap it to the boat, Wala!

fishing user avatarknownfactor reply :

i hit up mercer today caught like a 10oz lmb thats about it lost 2 cranks in the stumps =(

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

I may head back out to Mercer tomorrow afternoon or Thursday afternoon when I get out of work.  I will post up pictures if I catch anything worth posting.

which side of the stumps were you fishing? i parked in a court off of huntsman blvd and walked down the path and the lake is to the right i didnt make it across to the other side kinda stuck it out there and walked down to that small cove before the bridge in the woods. looks like the sun disapears over the other side of the lake around 530 gonna try that side next time i go...also what are they biting? i caught mine on a shad colored crank decided to switch it up to a spinner and jig didnt catch anthing else

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

I have been catching them on crankbaits and rigged platics.   I have also been catching them on both sides of the lake.  I try to fish areas that others don't walk to and fish.

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

I took my friend Paul to Mercer this afternoon. I only caught a dink but he landed four lmbs, 2 dinks a 1.5lb and this nice 4lb lmb.  This was my friends first time fishing here.
