Just got a new outboard for my 14ft jonboat and hit Lake Anna today. I got a tip from a generous fellow angler Nitrofreak about some spots but was looking for some more pointers if anyone was willing to let some go.
Send a PM or drop some notes here.
Today I went across from the power plant and c-rigged some drop offs with a lizard. Caught a 2 lb fish. Got another one with a jig under a dock. But after those two fish. Nada. I've heard that Lake Anna can hand it to you. So I consider today to be a success. My best friend, poor guy couldn't get one in the boat. He had a couple bites but nothing solid.
Also, is there anywhere to put in for free on Lake Anna? I put in at Sturgeon Creek Marina. But that was 8 bucks.
If anyone could give a helping hand I would appreciate it.
One Fish Anna strikes again!!!
Do not know of any free launch sites.
Get a GMCO map of the lake and look for free ramps.
Get a copy of the 2011 Freshwater Fishing in Virginia publication from DG&IF at tackle stores, Wal-Mart, Gander Mountain, Dick's and BPS and view the Lake Anna information for free launch sites.
$8 is a good price to make sure your tires are not slashed; vehicle is safe; and there are others around if you need help or to buy something.
As for spots, hit the docks.

Nowhere there is free, unless you are camping at one of the campgrounds.
As Sam Stated the docks are usually pretty good make sure you slow down and get under them because they get a lot of pressure but if you go again there are several areas that are also good.
Focus on the primary points there this time of year and look for brush/rock piles off of those points, also there is a couple of places where the lake narrows especially where the old river used to run before it was a lake, If you get a map you will see where these places are.
The upper part of the lake was still stained the last time I was there but it holds some pretty good fish, Terry's run, Pummunky branch, Christopher run are places you do not want to miss out on... just watch your sonar there are some tricky shallow areas that are not marked !!!
Top water baits early in the am around grassy points are AWESOME in the upper part of the lake and switch to C-rigged or T-rigged lizzards, Senko's etc... as the sun starts to warm up fish a little deeper off of the banks, Pumpkin seed/Chartruce, Watermelon/red colors work pretty good most of the time.
You should pay a visit to Anna point marina they have some amazing baits there.
Good luck and be safe !!
Let us know how your next trip goes.
I'm planning on buying a map next time I head out there. Wouldn't you know it, as soon as I get the boat ready to go my engine on my truck starts overheating. Greaaat.
I'll probably be on Anna again this Saturday. We'll see if I can hook up on some more fish. The other day was my first carolina rig bass. Pretty stoked.
Thanks guys.

Congrads on the first C-rigged fish and get used to the rig you use it a lot at Anna, Hope you do well this weekend.
Good luck with the truck too.
I hope to meet up with you at Anna at some point in time but this weekend I am heading down to Buggs Island for the first time But I fish Anna a lot.
The best place to get one of those maps that Sam had mentioned while you are there is at the state park they are free for the asking if you stop at the park headquarters, You pay your launch fee at the front gate which I think is 8 or 9 bucks but they have a great launch to use and if you launch from there you are pretty close to those places I was telling you about.
Good luck and be safe and let us know how you did.
I am heading out to lake Anna this Sunday. My family and i will be on vacation in the Lynchburg area and I got the OK to meet her Naval Brother at the lake. I will not be towing my boat down and he doesn't have one so we plan on renting one while we're there. I'll bring my SONAR and strp it on the rental. I Can't wait. I'm so used to fishing up here in the North Country that i really don't know what to expect down there. I'm told it is just not the same. Bigger Bass and different baits. Maybe I'll get to break out some of my Koppers frogs! Any pointers you can give me for Anna are appreciated.
I'd also like to hit Smith Mountain Lake as it is only a half hour drive from where we are staying. Any thoughts on that lake?

If I were you I would shy away from SML this time of year simply due to the amount of boat traffic, Anna is going to be tough enough to handle but will be a lot better than SML, unless you are fishing at night.
It depends on what time you are launching and where, you need to bring a few extra bucks and pick up a SPRO frog at Anna point marina if you want to fish on top but you HAVE TO BE THERE EARLY for top water to really get the best action, It will work all day for you but it's much harder with the boat traffic during the day.
As I was suggesting to dahmi013 if your equiptment can spot rock/brush piles off of the primary points there an 11 inch worm pumpkinseed/chartuce works good on a C-rig or shaky head but be very slow.
The docks hold some pretty good fishing as well but be really slow around them.
SURE BET is live bait 15 feet below a bobber and sit back and relax a while as you troll.
Good luck and be safe!!!
PS: If you go the live bait route make sure your rod is secure either in your hands or attached to the boat !!!
Yeah Nitro we'll have to meet up sometime. I'll be hitting it a lot more often now that I got a gas motor. I've got a small boat but she handled Anna well last Sunday and we put in on the busier side I believe. Just had to conduct some evasive maneuvers. This Saturday I'm looking to put in at the state park and check out those spots you mentioned.
It's supposed to be beautiful this weekend.
Good luck at Buggs.

It is supposed to be really nice this weekend and it should be some really good fishing at Anna.
I don't know if you have ever launched from the state park but if you get there too early they have an honor system at the front entrance so have a 5 and some one's with you, put the money in the envelope and put your tag on your mirror they do check that stuff out to make sure you paid.
As you launch look straight across the lake, Just off to your left the waterway for Anna river is what you will see.
Go there first, As you enter the mouth of the old river keep to your right, there will be a ton of docks but if I may suggest you should go further up the old river to the first bridge and start there...This is the Christopher Run area.
When you are done fishing BOTH sides of that area in front of the bridge and you work your way under the bridge, there are grass areas on the other side, Fish that area REALLY good, Hint: there is a rock bed on the other side of that bridge to your right...Take your time there.
Work your way up the old river to the next bridge and fish there really good too, especially the docks and deeper water in front of the docks before the bridge if it's really sunny.
Do this and you WILL have a productive day just keep in mind most big bites there are REALLY soft so pay close attention.
Post some pics when you get done and let us know how you did, hopefully I will be able to do the same LOL.
Good luck and be safe!!
And thanx for the well wishes.
Awesome I wrote that all down in my notebook and I'll be ready to roll tomorrow morning. Thanks again my man.

Sure thing just do me a favor and catch some fish will ya lol.
Have fun and be safe and don't forget the pics!!!!
Lake Anna handed it to me.
We set out towards the first bridge. Didn't catch anything til we took the little water way just after the first bridge. My best friend caught a 5.12lb. Nice fish.
Then we didn't catch anything for awhile. Surviving the wake was interesting.
Then on the way back from the 2nd bridge the motor started slowing down. So I pulled off to a cove and cut it off to see what was going on. The motor didn't start back up. I caught one small one about a pound.
We then used to trolling motor for as long as we could, and then I paddled about 4 miles. That sucked. Finally while my best friend was wading through the water along a sand bar and older gentleman saw us from his house and offered to tow us back to the state park.
Never a dull moment.
Truck dies, outboard motor dies, oh yeah and I snapped one of my rods trying to get it un-snagged.
Ha wow.
I'll be back out there again as soon as I can get my outboard back running. I need to clean out the carb and try using some engine starting fluid.
We'll see.
Hope Buggs Island was better than what I went through.
Sorry to hear about your experience.
Engine problems are always a nightmare for us all.
Keep plugging away on One Fish Anna.
Let us know when you are up and running again.
Sometimes it be like that.
No use to get all worked up.
I know I'll have some stellar days out there. Just gotta keep grindin' it out.
I would post the pic of the big girl my best friend caught but I'm getting a Internal Server Error. I'll try again later.
Nitro how'd you do?

PHEW!!!
Sounds like you had it rough, Im so sorry to hear about that.
You got back safe and sound and no one got hurt thats the main thing, Let me know if I can help in any way.
My trip went much like yours, As far as the camper was concerned anyway.
We arrived at Buggs a little after 11 pm...Had to leave from work and I didn't get off until 6:00 so we left around 7:30 when we got to my friend of a friends house we set up camp, hooked up the electric and smoke started rolling from everything.
The friend of a friend that hosted us wired up the boxes for 220 instead of 115...Ha! thats what they make surge protectors for and I was in such a hurry I did not hook mine up...DUMMY !!!
Lost the microwave and the fridge and the power inverter...needless to say it was a long night.
Not the friend of a friends fault we sent him pics but they do look like dryer plugs lol.
My friends camper lost his inverter for no reason at all, So the next morning we went fishing...Buggs Island is AWESOME by the way...For about an hour and 45 minutes.
Keep in mind my friend and I always are trying to better one another and he was talking trash the whole week prior about how bad he was going to beat me and make me look stupid, so guess who came out on top...YEP!! 3 to nothing...Just so you know I made him put a pair of my underpants over his head and walk around the joint LOL...by the way it was the pair I wore the night before HA!!!!!!
After all of that we went and got the inverters and worked on the campers the rest of the afternoon and went and watched fireworks for the lakefest they have there COOL SHOW !!!
On the way back to the house my friend lost his radiator and so it was another long night.
I managed to wake up the next morning and take my daughter and absolutely had one of the best fishing mornings one could ask for, I caught 18 in a 4 hour time frame, no big ones like your friends but still all were in the 2 to 3 pound range, a couple of the fish were huge but they missed the the popper, I tried to toss something else just after they missed but no luck.
So we left Clarksville and got a call from my friend who lost his radiator and learned he had lost a tire just outside of C-ville and had to wait there for us to come get him.
So long story short...The best weekend ever and by far the most expencive!!!
Going to lake Anna for vacation in August CANT WAIT!!
Forgot to add I lost a bearing buddy too and almost took out a guys windshield...Good thing he was cool about the whole thing.
Oh and here is a pic of one of the 2 lb'ers just before my phone died...still don't know what the hell happened there gotta get a new one.
Here's a pic of the fat girl. Man that sounds like a frustrating yet rewarding weekend.
I think my carb needs to be cleaned out. I got some sea foam so hopefully that'll do the trick. I won't be able to work on it til this weekend. 60 hour weeks kinda prohibit any extra curricular activities. So I'm now a weekend warrior.
Once I get it up and running I'll be back on Anna and maybe we can hook into some big girls. It's rough out there man. For a little Jonboat like mine. Ha I had a guy tell me I had a lot of nerve. It wouldn't be so bad if people weren't complete idiots.
How hard is a little common courtesy?
Glad you had a good weekend despite the set backs. Gotta keep a positive attitude.
Nice pic! Don't bother with Chesdin then. It's the same there as well. It was impossible to try and fish the channel the day I went.
And worst of all we had the nerves to try and go out with just electric. My 40lb transom and my 45lb bow mount. I try to get my brother gas power going but no luck.
Still can't figure out whats wrong with it. It has fire, I check that and even try puting gas in the carb but no luck. It won't even try to turn over. It's an Evinrude 6hp that starts by a pull rope.
Play with the chokes and spray some engine starter fluid in there. Also get some seafoam from advanced auto and mix it with your gas and oil.
If all else fails just rebuild up your carb.

My brother the motor has been completely rebuilt just not sure if carb was. It's has motor so I prob will give back to him. I found some dude around my way the has a motor for sale that I'm going to check out if still have Wednesday. He says he uses it on his jonboat.
Well best of luck. I of all people know how much it sucks to be limited to a trolling motor. But then again in my area most public lakes are only electric because they're all reservoirs.

NICE FISH!!!
There is a lot of them up there just like that one and bigger too, If you don't mind me asking what were you guys using for bait?
It's hard to fish for them though when you are more concentrated on surviving the boat wakes rather than just being able to fish, you will enjoy the months to come though if you just hang in there, Late September early to late October the boat traffic won't be near as bad and are some of the best months to fish Anna as long as it's not too windy.
Yep it's pretty rough this time of year people have no idea what they do to a little boat nor do they care
I could get into a whole new post about stupidity on the water but we will save that for another day.
The set backs cost me close to 2 grand, the fridge itself was 1200.00 bucks OUCH!!!
There is a get together at Briery on the 30th and now I don't know if I can make it but hopefully I will have enough just to go for the day.
I have already saved enough for vacation at Anna I may have to cut that short too.
Hopefully you get up and running again this weekend if you need any help let me know.

I was using a c-rigged lizard like you said. Where we were was some stained water so my buddy caught her on a green pumpkin Mad Paca from netbait. We caught her just after the first bridge behind those rocks and grass on the right. There's a 4ft wide cut out in the grass and it leads back to a little cove.

Cool !!!!
I know exactly where you are talking about good job guy's!!!!
I hope you have some better luck the next time your there.
I don't know what it is about that lake but it drives me absolutely NUTTS sometimes when I can't get a pattern established.
She has been so stinking mean to me over the past five years but I have finally learned a lot of her little secrets now I just need to work on some of her bigger ones lol, I think thats why I like it so much...she is a pain in my a## but I love her anyway.

That I did not.I don't have a compression test. I was just hoping to go off that it was rebuilt and being my brother's uncle that it would be a small problem but that doesn't seem to be the case here. Have anyone ever seen a sparkplug without a tip?? The spark plus doesn't have tips and the only pics I looked up all have them. They still spark just never seen these before, maybe wrong kind of spark??. L76v is the model number. First time I ever seen one. Here is a pic of the Champion L76v model. Even his is Champion but no tips.

If it is gone you need to take a good look inside and make sure the piece did not break off and is in the combustion chamber or it could cause you some pretty severe problems ok.
Are you able to post pics?
If you are I would like to see the plug you took out.

Ye I will try to post a pic soon as can Thanks Nitro. But from what I seen it looks natural not having a tip but that's the first for me. If a tip was there they must of sand it down to where nowhere notices. I even check my other boat L77v I think and they even have the tip for the spark area. I can't find any info on L76v coming without those tips either. It would be nice if that is the problem though cheap and simple.
Sorry dhami013 for hijacking your thread.
Ha no it's all good. Engine trouble is not fun. I know, as do many fisherman out there. I just hope the carb being cleaned out is all I need. We'll see.
Good luck with your motor, and yeah do post some pics.

Indeed and thanks! Good luck to your motor as well.
It, it's, IT'S ALIVE!
Played the chokes, got her cooking for 20 minutes using seafoam to clean out the carb, cut it off for ten mins, then got her roaring again. NICE!
Going on the Rappahanock tonight.

Yeah well I was surprised to have it die on me again. Luckily I had the trolling motor to get back. Sucked. I don't know what is going on. I had it running today. It's like God and my motor knew I was on the water and the universe didn't want it to happen. So frustrating.
I'm gunna rebuild the carb. And see what happens from there.
