I throw a lot of skinny dippers and Big EZ's. I live in Florida and wanted to know if anyone in the south(mainly in FLA) has used any of the HUddleston baits or any of these pricey life-like baits. If so, which ones do you recommend???
Thanks in advance
I don't live in Florida, but the 68 weedless Hudds in a shad pattern should work extremely well down there. I also would be shy about throwing a big spook style bait like a lunker punker!
i throw hudds in pa, im gonna attempt to throw one at a smallmouth here soon, theyll eat it.
lets make one thing clear, the rods youre throwing a skinny dipper on, wont like these bigger baits.
No, I just dont think throwing a Hudd down here will give any type of advantage over a Skinny Dipper or EZ.
But that's just me.

&jhoffman-you don't think a shimano crucial 7'11" heavy-x-fast "flipping" rod would get it done???
I have the same rod that I punch with that's a 7'11" extra heavy-fast also
Weedless 68 would be your best bet
Grantm....I use to fish hudds a lot a d recently started again witb six and eight inch. Also real prey g2 pond shiners. Both excellent baits. The problem is they are not conducive for many areas here in south florida. The eight inch has revealed giants for me in areas I never thought were there.
I throw fairly often down here. Haven't really thrown the 6" and up on anything other than the retention pits down in my area. I've used the Weedless shad and Weedless shiner all over the place though. Those things flat out catch fish. Little on the pricey side when you realize that they aren't the most durable things in the world. For the most part, I stick with the big ez/skinny dipper style paddle tails.
My thoughts exactly. Excellent for pits and open water near ambush points slow rolling them. For buzzing the top of grass any of the smaller swimbaits are a much better option since really its a reaction strike your getting. I saw a big DD bass follow my eight inch hudd in a pit down here.
I have thrown the 6 inch Hudd and it will produce fish. I have caught many fish on the little hudds but mainly fish the 6 inch. It will produce fish and mostly 4 pounds and up. Sometimes you have to have patience because it's such a big bait but once you have confidence it will catch you fish. If your not worried about catching numbers and are looking to catch the big ones the 6 inch is a good choice.
I throw a reaction strike 6" swimbait in a bluegill color and it swims and runs nice even at a moderate speed, I've used a 6inch osprey but it's a b!#<# and a half to use, you gotta crawl it so slow and the line thru treble hook in the belly deal really tears the bait up, I wanna try the rago skt swimmer, looks like a good deal. Along wih the Byron velick 5.5. I throw it on my st croix legend 7'11" hVy power moderate fast action. It loads up really well on those baits, but you try and a whip out a big bait a few times and it'll prob crack and half lololol
stick with the big ez and dippers. they are less money and way more productive.
Quick question. How do you guys work the skinny dippers and Big EZ's. I just started using them, and haven't had much luck. Do you just slow roll them, or work them like a fluke style bait.

I personally throw them on a weighted hook. That way it always run true. Rig it weedless. I usually do a constant retrieve as well. If bass are following it, stop retrieving it and they usually slam it. Wait a second to set the hook.
Anyway....this is cliche but let the fish tell ya. Buzz on top over pockets and by cover. No takers then try swimming it with a stop and go. You can also kill in the pockets or next to cover if tbey wont commit on top.

Havent been using them very long but a nice slow strait retrieve seems to work well. Also making it act like a dieing fish with random behavior gets a nice reaction strike time to time.
I throw mine on a 1/8 oz. weighted hook. Either the gamakatsu or owner. It gives it a true look and feel, still stays weedless and glides over cover(pads, Kissimmee grass, buggy whips, etc...) really well. Some guys peg it with a 1/8-1/4oz tungsten bullet weight and seem to like it that way so they can dead-stick it in holes and occasionally flip with it. Give it a shot
The only swimbaits that I use are the Gambler EZ's with Gami swimbait hooks. 1/8 oz if I want to keep them up top and level, 1/4 oz if I want to work the mid depth ranges.
you want to try one of the bigger swimbaits down there, I wouldn't hesitate to look into the floating 8" Savage Gear top hook line thru baits. You can creep them across the tops of grass since they float, And at $18 half the price. You are never gonna know what you can catch unless you throw one. Just make sure you have the gear to bring them out of the cover. And like stated above, the bigger fish will give up their location when they follow even if they don't bite, you can come back later and try with something else, but you will know where they live. I'd stick with the 68 weedless if you're gonna throw the 6" models and fish it on a steady retrieve.
Weighted Gambler Duzit hooks with willow blade. Silver
I just got some yumm money minnows only threw one once briefly haven't had much time to try again anyone else use em?

Never used them but Flats Class had an episode where he used them. Nose hooked with weightless or a keel weighted EWG and he slayed the snook in 1000 islands with them. Look for the thousand island episode on his website or vimeo.com under blue fox productions(or something close to that)
I've been using the Big EZ last few days using 4/0 EWG hook. I run them on top of the water with a moderate speed, IMO they are hitting the movement even if they aren't running straight. I did pretty well with them, did not care for the smaller version of the bait.
I wouldn't use them for snook, DOA jerk shad on 1/4 oz jig head catch most of my snook and tarpon, bucktails work just as good.
I've caught fish on ALL the major brands swimbaits with none being the most wanted over the other from what I could tell by the way bass were reacting to them all. Hell, the zoom swimmin super flukes caught just as many fish as the gambler big EZ.
I do; however, like that the gamblers tail thump creates a bigger thump, though. Also has a larger profile.
I throw them everywhere I think I can get the bait to.
Try the floating Savage Gear Line Thru. Nice tail kick, can be fished as is or weighted to sink very slowly and it has a top hook to keep weeds off.
How much water do you guys have over top of the weeds you are fishing?
Wayne...ive been eyeballing the savage gear. is its durability worth it. ove read that after a couple fish the hook no longer stays in place??
You can get them on sale from places this weekend for around $15 or so and if you take advantage of the program Savage is running on here where you write a review and get two baits free, I'd say it's definitely worth it.
Even on its own at $15, it's worth it IMO. It's got a different swim to it, and I can see it really shining if you are on a reaction bite down there because it works well at a faster speed than I'd fish a Hudd or Rising Son.
The hook pocket thing? Eh. No worries. I'm so used to glueing hooks into soft baits to keep them there that it's not really a concern.

How long does that glue last?
It's superglue. Lasts as long as it's gonna last, I don't know. LOL
Cool thanks brother. Ill probably grab one and give it a shot.
Just an update.
I lost a big fish last weekend because the hook didnt disengage from the pocket. I was told that pinching the barb down on the hook that goes into the hook pocket will help the hook release on a fish.
Would have liked to hold that fish. Big.
New PB possibly??
Problem with a hud down there and at this season is the tail really doesnt kick as good as a boot tail.
Even up here right now they are hittin the big hammer for me which flaps all over unlike those slow hud tails.
This time of the season everything is moving around alil more.. think the odds are in faster moving baits.

Not quite that big but probably another 7+.
Had that nice deep body structure most of my good fish have. That Savage Gear impressed me. I bought another two last night.
