the official lost tackle of 2016 thread v1 2024

fishing user avatarYoTone reply :

so after losing my chatterbait the first day of trying one out ive decided to take note of all the tackle i lost or broke.

ive already went through 3 bags of yum dingers (updated 4-28-16)

9 jigs- 1 snapped off mid cast the other got snagged. (updated 5-5-16)

2 chatterbait - snapped off mid cast. that feel when you see your brand new lure snap off in the middle of a cast and watch it sail off and plop into the water.

lost one during lunch at a new spot. (updates 3-30-16)

2 jerk bait -i smashed this against something in the middle of a cast. i dont even know how thats possible but i guess i just got that magic touch. *updated  4-1-16*

3 spinner (updated 4-7-16)

1 jig head and brush hog on its first cast

1 keitech

ill be updating daily since i seem to lose something every outing.

fishing user avatarPennBass reply :

Lost a lucky craft pointer on the first cast on the schuylkill last week, followed in quick succession with a spro aruku shad and a storm twitch stick.

first cast, nice. but i think me losing my chatterbait on the day it arrived in the mail beats that. i literally had it in my possession for less than 2 hours.

fishing user avatarIndianaFinesse reply :

Last week I lost a rcstx, two pointers, six trds and shroomz's, broke my rod trying trying to unsnag my pointer, and lost a net while trying to unsnag my other pointer with it. all in one day.  If I kept track of all the tackle I lost or broke, I think I would have a heart attack from seeing all the lost money.

I think bassfanatic just did.  those Alabama rigs are extremely expensive, by the time you rig one of them they will often run you thirty dollors.

fishing user avatarBass_Fanatic reply :

I figured I lost $120 in Bama rigs, $60 in 10xds, $200 on the reel, $160 on the rod, and $45 on line.  That's $585...just another day in paradise?

Dang....all I lost was a spinner bait blade on a cast on the Susquehanna river. Guess I got off lucky.

This warrants an explaination.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I flipped my kayak and lost my phone, Garmin Virb Elite, a shimano spinning reel and St. Croix rod combo, and a lot of my dignity a few weeks ago.

fishing user avatarFishes in trees reply :

Every so often I lose stuff/break stuff/ space stuff out.    I can't get very bent out of shape when that happens - because it never is and never has been an ownership thing with fishing tackle.   I see it more as a "temporary custody" thing.     When something  gets lost - or broke - or just spaced out to the point of I've no clue where it is right now,   I just look at it as my temporary custody of that item has been revoked.

fishing user avatarLunkerFisher reply :

My biggest loss last year was the St croix premier and pflueger summit casting reel that got ripped out of my hands and lost at the bottom of the lake. I set the hook after a hit on my 1/2 oz spinnerbait and then a huge pull straight up overpowered me. I'm more upset about losing the fish (can only speculate what that monster looked like) than the combo. I've also learned to loosen my drag now and am always checking it ?.

fishing user avatarJaderose reply :

Wow......I was peeved when I lost a new Warpig on the second cast.  Some of you guys are downright dangerous.

I know where that warpig is.....I WILL have it back

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

I guess my best (worst) story was the day I met my best friend, Speedy Madewell. He took me and a couple of other guys to the Tennessee River striper fishing. We start immediately below the dam in "the boils" where the water churned out by the turbines is released. The the current is fast and the water is rough. Only two guys can fish a drift, so we alternate and rebait rigs.

When it's my turn Speedy hands me his rod, a G.Loomis 844C/ Calcutta CT200GT. We are fishing what you might consider a dropshot rig with a 3oz weight. When the weight hits the bottom you immediately lift the rod and that's when you will often get a strike, but sometimes it's just hung.  Well, there I am trying to maintain balance and suddenly, BAM!

Unfortunately it was a boulder this time and I did not clean my hands well enough when rigging the gizzard shad. BAM! $600+ literally down the drain...The next morning I was waiting at the door when BPS opened and a little while later delivered a present to my new friend's front porch.

fishing user avatarpapajoe222 reply :

The only times I tend to loose lures is when I fish from shore. Not that I don't get snagged when I'm in the boat, but as a last resort, I can get on top of it and use my lure retriever.

I loose mor baits in my tackle box than I do fishing them.

I was fishing a ridge with a lot of brush on it in 25ft. They were eating the Arig pretty good, but I hung it up a lot. Ended up breaking off 5 of em and 4 10xds all in the same stretch of brushpiles.  As for the rod, reel, and line, the reel just started making a bad sound and then I cast, backlashed terribly (ruining the tatsu), and it wouldn't even reel in anymore. It was a Abu revo stx. I then put another reel on the rod (Powell endurance 775) and the top 6" broke off of it. Not a good day, besides the fact I caught 23lbs off those piles.

fishing user avatarYoTone reply :

please keep the reports for this season only.

i was lucky this morning, a huge backlash early kept me busy all morning so i didnt lose anything.

fishing user avatarLendiesel22 reply :

I feel alot better about my situations after reading some of these. No major losses this season, but last year snagged my livingston in a beaver hut and broke my *** trying to free it.

fishing user avatarOklahoma Mike reply :

Lost a brand new Megabass Vibration X on its first cast. Lost 2 Z-Man chatterbaits, a few spinners, and probably a half dozen senkos. Yesterday I lost a Whopper Plopper during its first outing.

fishing user avatarkickerfish1 reply :

For 2016 only have lost a few weights and a Booya one knocker and a Spro Aruko shad. Not too bad or too costly so far. Last year I recall a day where I lost 6 jigs, I shakeyhead, and countless texas rigged books and weights fishing flooded brush.

Losing items is kind of part of of the sport. What makes a beat up fish catching lure really cool is knowing that it has survived the weedbeads, brush, rock, dock pilings, poor knots, frayed line, zebra mussels, toothy fish, or whatever other obstacle could get in its way.

You should have been down here with me Friday. I boated over 100 fish and had 20+ over 4lbs.

fishing user avatarcgolf reply :

Since the season is still closed, nothing yet, but I quit trying to think about it. Expecting to lose 20+ cranks and lots of jig plastic combos again this year. Shore fishing can get expensive. Don't lose as much from the boat unless a pike or musky gets me.

fishing user avatarbigturtle reply :

bass season has no yet opened in my country, but once it does, i expect somewhere between $50-80 worth of lost lures, because thats about how much i lose every year

fishing user avatarArobb2012 reply :

Wow I have only been out once this year and lost a 1/8 oz jig and a grub.

fishing user avatarHog Basser reply :

Me: Rat-L-Trap on first cast of the season, immediate snag....Rebel Crawfish (old one I'd had for a long time) a few trips later.

My Teenage Nephews ("borrowing" my lures): 3 brand new Booyah Spinners, assorted older spinners, another Rat-L-Trap (replacement of the original one) on his 2nd cast, and various older crankbaits from the bottom of my box.

This is on 5 days of fishing, only two of which were with my nephews.  I bought them both their own tackle boxes for Christmas and loaded them up with starter lures, but they keep "forgetting" to bring them when I ask them to go fishing with me.

fishing user avatarBruce424 reply :

fishing user avatarSemperFishing reply :

This isn't from 2016 but it's worth telling as a cautionary tale.

In late February of 2015 on a beautiful overcast and unusually warm 70's day I was kayak fishing on Germantown Lake in VA. Air temp 72 degrees, water temp 40 degrees. I was set and ready to go with rods and tackle loaded. Dressed in layers. As I arrived at my chosen spot I was uncomfortable with my seat position, it was in the high location. So I went about adjusting it.

I couldn't catch my breath at first. I knew I wouldn't drown because I had my PDF on (always, hot or cold). I couldn't touch bottom but I remember looking at my Lowrance and knew I was in 8 to 9 feet of water. But the water was sooo COLD. Mostly I was terrified of having a heart attack and being a floating popsicle for my wife to see. I quickly grabbed ahold of my capsized kayak and side stroked to shore. The going was ever so slow. I was praying out loud to GOD to save me, and hoping to get some ground under my feat. I still couldn't control my breathing.

I finally got to shallow water and hauled my kayak and my soaking wet ass to dry ground. I was freezing. Hyperventilating. Trembling. There was nowhere close to go for help. But back across the lake to my truck. I finally got some semblance of composure back, righted my kayak, and secured various items on board. It was then I noticed what was missing.

Three GLoomis rood and one St. Croix. Three Shimano's and one Abu Garcia, grand total $1600.00. I retrieved one rod light enough to float the end.

paddled, nervously, across the lake to the boat ramp. Hauled the kayak ashore. Walked like a drunk to my truck and sat in it with heat on high until I could feel my bones again.

It was so stupid what I did. I knew better. I knew it when I leaned forward, pulling on the seat, and felt the kayak move underneath me.

I went back later dragging a stringer with all the hooks open and retrieved one setup. My newest GLoomis and Curado I series. The rest are down there. Somewhere.

fishing user avatarYoTone reply :

d**n semp thats one hell of a first post.

fishing user avatarloudcherokee reply :

Too much to remember so far. Been having issues with my leader knot snapping, using the knot where you make a loop in the leader, put the braid through and wrap 6 times, then wrap back down 6 times and back out through the loop. The name escapes me. Using 15lb power pro and and yozuri hybrid leader. Not sure why it keeps snapping.

The most upsetting for me so far has been one of my Seibert spinner baits I got hung in a tree.

$1600 in 8-9 feet of water? YBYA I'd be out there in rented scuba gear as soon as the water warms up!

Water was just a little warmer when I went in about a month ago. I'm really thankful for my survival training from work and the mentality that has been beaten into me. That feeling when you know you're going over sucks. The water took my breath away instantly and all I could think to do at first was try to find somewhere to hold onto the kayak to keep myself up. Once I got a grip on my kayak though, I calmed down and assessed my situation and what I needed to do. I knew I had to get out of the water fast. I was in the middle of a bunch of standing timber so swimming didn't seem like a good option because I wasn't going to be able to drag the yak too and I was afraid I'd get hung up on a limb and not have the dexterity to get myself loose. My first attempt was unsuccessful, but the second time I got it righted. My big mistake here was I'd never tried to do this before. I know I should have gone and practiced flipping my kayak back over from the water before I ever used it, but I got lucky and managed to do it live. I used one of the trees to help steady my kayak and managed to get myself on top of it and out of the water. By that time a guy in a boat had got to me and was helping me get steady and was collecting any gear that was floating for me.

After I sat for a minute and collected myself and my gear from the helpful boater, I had to collect my poor dog that was soaked and watching me from the bank at this point. Surprisingly, she jumped right back on the kayak with me.

My loss wasn't nearly that bad though. 2 rods were missing, and the guy in the boat managed to snag one for me, so the only rod I lost was a St. Croix Triumph with a Shimano Slade. The Virb hurt for sure, I thought I had it secured to my seat with a flexible tripod but apparently not. My phone was in a water resistant case that I thought floated, but again I was apparently wrong.

Glad you made it out of your situation alive Semper. Good job wearing your PFD (I know I was glad I had mine), and sorry to hear about your gear.

so after losing my chatterbait the first day of trying one out ive decided to take note of all the tackle i lost or broke.

ive already went through 2 bags of yum dingers

3 jigs- 1 snapped off mid cast the other got snagged. (updated 3-30-16)

1 spinner

1 jig head and brush hog on its first cast

ill be updating daily since i seem to lose something every outing.

If you're losing that many mid cast you might wanna start checking your knots/line more often bud, I've been there before too. As soon as I hear any "grit" noise going through my rod, I cut the line and retie.

I haven't lost anything yet this year (which now means I'm about to) but I did put a lipless crank right into a tree a few days back. I just climbed the tree and cut the line, got my red eye shad back. :)

First cast ever using a rattle trap and was in awe by how far it was flying........so much so that I didn't notice it heading for a branch about 30 ft above the water. Bye.

Same day exploded another lipless crankbait against a dock.

i lost 3 spinnerbaits in 4 hours yesterday....  snapped 2 off and when i somehow cast the 3rd one off into the abyss i called it a day.

well i sent yet another spinnerbait into a tree out of reach this weekend like a moron....  terminator t1 spinnerbait at that and they don't just give those things away!  not sure what my deal is with losing spinnerbaits over the last few weeks!

i did lose a few jigs too, but i never count those as losses....  if you're not hanging a few of them up, you're not fishing them right!

Lost ole' faithful last saturday. Caught some big smallmouths and largemouths on her. I'll be going out next week sometime to see if I can find the log she is hooked on and bring her back. If not then its off to the internet to find a new brown beauty to replace her (but you know its gonna be tough). Here is the last picture it took of her.

My dad fell off the boat three weeks ago into 47 degree water, he wasn't wearing a pfd but luckily he is a certified life guard from youper land where water in the mid fifties is considered warm, so the shock wasn't as bad as it would have been otherwise.  Kind of freaked my brother and I out though cause he was under water for what seemed like an eternity, he fell over while lifting the anchor into the boat and when he fell off the rope was rapped around his hand and dragged him thirteen feet down to the bottom.  Luckily we only lost a cheap combo that the loose rope on the deck got tangled around when he fell over, and not his life.

i was soooooo happy this past weekend when i fished in some ridiculous wind both sat and sun and only lost like 3 small jig heads with plastic swimbaits.  was my first trip not losing one of my precious spinnerbaits in like my last 4 or 5 outings!

Lost a 3" Kalins grub and an 8th ounce ball head.

fishing user avatarTaylor Haberle reply :

Not much lost but a good story.. Jumped out of my kayak for a quick break midday. 48 F and rainy/strong wind, 45 degree water, pretty miserable. Stepped back into the kayak, lost my balance and flipped it in 5-6 feet of water. Absolutely freezing but I'm already wet, so why not go get all my stuff?... went back in and recovered all my combos, backpack, plano boxes, etc. My jig box opened up but they are some of my most prized possessions so I kept swimming around the bottom till I found 90% of them. My trick was stomping around till I got stuck by one barefoot and then dive in and nab it lol...

Shocked I found them but it took me 15 minutes in near freezing water. To top it off I was out with a buddy and I didn't have keys to the truck... Stayed out on the water for seven more hours freezing my a** off in wet jeans.. Most miserable I've ever been, shaking uncontrollably, not recommended. My phone was dead from water damage (was getting a new one anyways) and lost a couple jigs, but otherwise survived.

fishing user avatarPond reply :

Lost a red eye shad that I caught lots of fish on it had one eye left and tons of pike teeth scratches all over it but it caught fish. Ordered a replacement chili craw colored

fishing user avatarTeam9nine reply :

Not really lost, but now worthless :) Throw in a brand new Shimano Clarus that broke about 15" off the tip end when it got tangled in the braid of another rod, which then got wedged underneath a boat cleat, all while trying to unhang a 0.50 cent crappie jig from a shoreline bush - the wind blew us past the area, everything was hung together, and something had to give...

fishing user avatarthomas15 reply :

I haven't lost anything yet because I haven't fished but for an hour this year. However, I'm poised to lose a lot this year because the bait monkey has been very active and I now have a lot to lose.

Lost my favorite Lucky Craft Pointer 110 in a local pond. Few weeks later the owner handed it to me asking if it was mine. That story had a happy ending. Went on to catch several more 3+ lb. fish on it. :)

fishing user avatarYoTone reply :

went to dicks sporting good and bought a few stuff and promptly lost a new jig the next day.

on a side note, i got my precious chatterbait hung up on a tree branch at this lake in nj and i waved some guys in boat to get it for me. i would of chopped most of that tree down to get it back. a few days later i caught a striper with it.  im seriously contemplating retiring it.

has anyone retired a lure that caught a personal best?

I was in my kayak and had the trod and reel in the rod holder and the bait on the rod got caught on a low hanging tree. It hung there for a Little Whilr But before i Could get to it it fell out of the tree and there she went . I swam but could  not find it

fishing user avatarBassinBee99 reply :

I've been mostly fishing from shore this year and that has caused a lot of snags haha.

Pretty sure I've lost 5 jigs, a few crankbaits, some lipless, a few hooks, some bullet weights, and a whole bunch of soft plastics haha but I'm pretty good at keeping tabs of what I lose so that I make sure to replenish my inventory before my next fishing trip.

lost a lucky craft real gill yesterday though i know where it is and it will be retrieved as soon as the weather gets better

Does this mean lost by using, or just unable to locate it amongst the overabundance of gear in my basement?  If it's the latter, I lost one of my Chronarch SF reels somewhere.

Went shore fishing yesterday for about 4 hours on the Mississippi in Red Wing, MN. In the first 30 minutes I lost a zman chatterbait elite and a siebert swim jig. Luckily I didn't lose another one the rest of the day, otherwise it may have quickly become a very short day of fishing! I don't shore fish very often, but when I do it generally shows :-P

*cues the benny hill theme song*

real productive day in the loss column for me. decided to fish today even though it started to rain. lost 2 wacky worm rigs and 2 jigs.  decided to take out the spinner bait and smashed it into my other pole  breaking the bottom guide including messing up the spinner while creating a nasty birdsnest.

all done in less than 1 hour. *pats self on back*

I have "lost" a 3600 box that held my best spinnerbaits and chatterbaits.  I have rooted around in both my car and spare room and it has not turned up.  Now, neither spot is what you could call clean, so a full search might turn it up.  My only clue is that a week or so ago I made a last minute switch from a LMB trip to a saltwater trip and the night before I cut the chatterbait that I had tied on off but did not put it back in the box.  It is still sitting on my work bench, mocking me.

fishing user avatarYoTone reply :

just lost a baby booyah  jig this morning, it just snapped off my line. this jig hurt because i was just starting to enjoy it and got some sweet bass in the few days i used it.

fishing user avatarHog Basser reply :

Every single time I tie on a Rat-L-Trap, I lose it.  I've lost 4-5 this year already.  Doesn't matter if I'm in stumpy weedy waters, a rocky creek or what seems to be wide open waters, they always get hung and break off.  I may just give up on that lure for the rest of the year.  I usually lose it on the first few casts too, so have yet to catch a fish on one.
