Never used one of those. Looking at LC website it looks like a similar lure to the megabass popmax. Might have to try one. I like LC crankbaits

Both are walking baits but the Gunfish has a popR style mouth.

I seen it has the chamber and tail weight like the popmax has. Guessing It spits more than the popmax if it has a pop r style mouth?
Oddly enough, its a 6 inch worm. I've probably caught more bass on a worm run over shallow grass and pads than any other bait. Its the best lure on hot summer mornings. Only problem is the pickerel like it too.
Whopper. Plopper. Close second would be spro frog.
Top topwater lures of all time:
1. Excalibur Zell Rowland Pop-R
2. Storm Chug bug
3. Excalibur super spook
4. Spro Frog
5. Whopper Plopper 110 - Quickly shooting up the list.
I grew up on the jitterbug, so that would have to be my all-time favorite. After that is booyah poppin pad crasher and lunkhunt popping frogs, which were my biggest producers this last summer. I'm also a big fan of spooks, and just started using whopper ploppers...I'd have to say the whopper plopper is my favorite now in terms of action/versatility.

As usual I don't have a lot to bring to the table on this since I only started trying a little bass fishing last year after a 55 year hiatus, but the topwater that I've caught the most on would have been the Hula Popper back in the early 60's. My best recent success for topwater is a BPS brand which doesn't seem to be available any more, with the slit just back of the lip for water to squirt out of. (I bought these about 6 years ago for fishing salt water tide channels for mutton snapper in the Bahamas, and glad I got 6 of each) I caught my first bass in more than 50 years on the one in the top right of this photo at a little lake lake outside of Eldora, IA called Pine Lake, and I caught several more from a couple of small ponds here near my house.

For many, many years it was a Cavitron buzzbait. But the Jackall Pompadour has moved into my number one spot. Honorable mention to the Sammy and the Pop-Max.

get yourself a black 1/4 oz Cavitron buzzbait.
1) Heddon Super Spook Jr (saltwater version) in Red Head
2) 3/8 black Cavitron Buzzbait
3) Rebel Pop-R
(Honorable mention) Whopper Plopper. I had success with mine last year, but didn't fish it a ton. So it's hard to be a favorite. Although it was a lot of fun.

I always wondered about the wooden Sammy? How does it perform compared to its plastic counterpart?
Allen
It's a weighted balsa wood and very active lure.
Tom
Black buzzbait, don't really care what kind if it's just a general "What's your favorite", question. If I was going to be more specific, a 1/2oz black Cavitron with the red or black blade, or a 3/4oz Crock-O-Gator, black on black. I can cover lots of water, they're good around cover, big fish love them.
Well since I'm up late on call I'll throw my 2 cents in, smithwick devil's horse. The strikes I had on that gave me chills
Yamamoto Baits
Shibuki Popper
Black Bone
1/2 oz.
3"
Lucky Craft Sammy.
it will probably change because I always find new baits because I fish topwater 10 months out of the year. I usually always end up going back to the Sammy.

I still like the old school topwaters!
Hula popper
black jitterbug
heddon torpedo
1-1/4 cavitron buzzbait in black early morning
2-1/4 Lucky Craft G-Spash popper in chartreuse shad
Rapala Skitterwalk
Heddon One knocker spook
Rebel Magnum Pop R
But there are so many others that I could pick for top 3.
I've caught more and bigger bass on the DSG Banshee buzzbait than any others.
I really liked Gundog's response: trickworms are just awesome topwater lures.

A quick off topic... does Wisconsin still have the bass fishing prohibition during spawn? I know they did back in the 50's and 60's when I spent my summers there.

Statewide season starts may 5th but the northern part of the state it is catch and release only till mid June

This was me 2 years ago. I started bringing one with me tied on everywhere I went, and committed to making it the first thing I threw, and to throwing it longer before giving up for something else. Like magic, I started catching bass. And then I caught some more. And more. And more...
I usually fish buzzbaits, a strike king one. Results have been mixed but looks like the cavitron may offer something different

it's personal preference and what you have confidence in. I personally don't add a trailer, I always had a trailer hook though. my buddy throws a white zoom horny toad on a black buzzbait and swears by it.
1. Spook, Spook Jr with the rattle
2. Topwater frog (Booyah Pad Crasher and Popping Pad Crasher)
3. Pop R
4. Chug Bug
5. Torpedo (caught 50 bass on it once)
6. Buzzbait
Honorary mentions: Rats, toads, Hula Popper & Jitterbug. And I have two Whopper Ploppers I haven't gotten a chance to use yet.
I know that's not one, but I love topwaters so much I'd take fewer fish on topwater rather than more on other baits.

Zara puppy
Homemade buzzbait. I know a guy that makes them and sells them to me real cheap. Idk what it is but whether its at Guntersville where I go once or twice a year or on the rivers down here on the Gulf Coast where I live, it out fishes my Whopper Ploppers or any store bought buzzbait I buy.

I am the same way man. for some reason I catch more without a trailer and I concur with the trailer hook. Just fished a tournament this past weekend and got third primarily with a buzzbait. Probably half of them were hooked with the trailer hook only. Its a must for me unless Im fishing across heavy cover. Then unfortunately I just deal with the misses
Another buzzbait vote - i like jacob wheeler's buzzbait and always have a trailer on it (rage tail cut r, if i have some).
Heddon Super Spook Jr. Once you learn how to walk the dog you feel a real sense of accomplishment.
Close second would be the Whopper Plopper for fish catching numbers and versatility.
Cavitron buzzbait.
Honorable mentions: Rapala Skitterpop, Strike King Rage Shad, Heddon Super Spook Jr, Booyah Boss Pop, Various Hollow Bodied frogs
In no particular order, my treble hook topwater preferences: Lunker punker, chug bug, ms slammer, gunfish, giant dog x, pop max.
Sammy 115 or Popmax.

For we poor saps living in Minnesota, we buy our lures in the frozen tundra time of year and just drool over them until the middle of May when we can fish again. Taking 6 months off during the winter is horrible. Count your blessings in South Carolina!! I am jealous!!

Yeah... Hard for one to be the first when there are 30 that have never seen water. I have a rod and reel that have never been used, and yesterday when I was out looking around, the water was still mostly too hard to fish. The great weather in the next few days may change that.

I know the feeling. I have my 2 best rods I bought last fall and only took out once and haven’t caught a fish on them yet. And probably 15 new lures just waiting till may to try them out.

Well then, that makes perfect sense. Then again, the few times I went out this winter the fishing was so slow here the lagoons may as well have been frozen over.

When it gets dark outside nothing beats the gurgling of a big black Jitterbug! When the sun is out I throw Super Spooks or Pop R's. All time favorite is a Jitterbug though.
Spook
All time favorite is the Storm Chug Bug. My 2nd largest fish blasted a Sammy so that bait has some sentimental value.
Today it's a buzzbait.
- cover water fast with a long cast, straight retrieve
- can be a fairly soft gurgle to loud commotion.
- can have added clacking/knocking..sometimes added with a tweak of the lure whlie fishing
- can skim over weeds in many cases where trebles can't play
- durable, no soft plastics to destroy
I havent changed my pick , its still a buzzbait and has been for decades but Toads have really been good to me lately . This lake i have fished forever , for the past two years has had a chara algae explosion and i've had to change tactics . The backs of some coves are completely choked out and those toads over the top of mats and in sparser areas have been getting hammered .
I’ll be the first to say it, Xcalibur Spit’n Image.
I can only find them on eBay now but I’m pretty stocked up on them.
Spook
Hollow body frog.
redux ...
Bobby's perfect hollow body frog. Great hookup ratio and long lasting.
Lunker Lure buzzbait, Storm Chug Bug, and original Zara Spook
And the winner is (drum roll) the Zara Spook! It is for me anyways.
BTW Cak920, you asked for our favorite and then listed more than one of your own. Very confusing for us mentally challenged seniors.
Teckel Sprinker (it basically a Whopper plopper that plays better around weeds)
Live Target hollow body frog (my hook up ratio has gone up tremendously vs even when I used the booyah pad crasher)
Whopper plopper 90 (it just catches fish)
I've been fishing small lakes with a ton of vegetation lately, so I've been primarily using the hollow body frog, and the Teckel when there's some gaps in the muck I can reel across.
Top Raider - I had one these long before the Whopper plopper was even thought of and the metal prop besides making a better sound is easier to clean up when grass tangles on it.

Popper, buzzbait, wakebait, in that order.
Any brand of popper. I don't find one works (gets strikes) any better than the rest. I only have one year experience but I've caught most topwater with Bass Pro Shops branded poppers. I even got a few on a Walmart popper.
I think if I got a small tree twig and put hooks on it I'd catch a topwater bass. I don't care much what color they are either, though I'm going to experiment some time with that.
Balsa Crank
Black Jitterbug, followed by a Livetarget Hollow Sunfish
PH Custom Walkin' P... Soooooo money
A frog of some variety, a pop-r, and a buzzbait
1 - Megabass Popmax in secret gill, caught my PB this year. Can be walked, popped, or chugged
2 - Live Target Frog (55 size) in any colour that has an orange or yellow belly
3 - Heddon Chug'n Spook Jr in Bone. Caught TONS of fish on my original one and still going strong, never had to use my back up one yet. Its a bait that doesn't get talked about very much. Swap the hooks to some Gammy round bends and you've got a workhorse topwater bait for life.
I have 2 whopper ploppers that never get used because I can't bring myself to throw any bait other than these haha!
