How picky are you with your fishing hats (or hats in general, I guess)?
The only kind of hat I wear is a L/XL FlexFit, and they tend to have the mesh back. That's the only hat I've found that really fits well. "One size fits all" does not apply to me
I have a big ol noggin, and the bill on trucker hats umis usually smaller and looks odd on me. I opt for a fitted flat bill hat when I can.
No option for snapback or hook and loop closure so I picked flex-fit. I wear trucker style when the weather is 90+ degrees here.
I wear a ball cap when fishing. Not the best choice for sun protection as they don't cover your ears. I can't bring myself to wear a bucket hat. I hope my vanity doesn't cost me dearly someday.
Thank goodness for buffs. They help cover the areas a ball cap misses.
I wear a 'ball cap'..a few different ones....can't say I know the differences....one says Mojo Bass....one has a Green Bay 'G', another has Siebert 'SO'... I just call 'em ball caps
I've got two trucker style. One is a mesh back, Blue Oyster Cult - got at a concert I went to back in '83. Second is a full coverage, St. Paul Saints, our local AAIPB baseball team.
Columbia Flexfits, L/XL...because I've got a noggin that weighs more than your PB.
I have to have an adjustable hat because XL isn't big enough for my head.

And on the other end of the melon size scale,
I have to wear a 'youth' hat because I have a peanut size squash.
And the color options available are always a just a little bit zany . . .

I voted "Trucker style" but I really don't know the differences in the hats you listed. I call it a "ball cap". Adjustable snap back and a hole to stick my ponytail/man bun through. I have a couple hats, but my lucky fishing cap is a camouflage Chicago Bears hat with a red/white/blue redneck hook ornament on the bill. Snazzy........
Either a ball cap or a full brim hat . I bought the Outdoor Research Sombriolet last year . I'm pleased with it .
I've got about a dozen of what is referred to as "baseball caps', some are fitted, some aint. Mesh back for summer & thicker solid material for cooler weather.
Colors: Ole School Vietnam Era woodland camo, Realtree marsh pattern, & Desert Storm pattern. Along with Saints & LSU hats plus your normal solid Reds, blues, & white.
Oh yeah the bill has to be formed to my sunglasses!
Aint no flat bill cap ????
To many hats to mention, since I wear a hood on the suniest of days, some version of truckers hat. For overcast I have a few jungle soft floppy wide brims
Me and Bo share a Bill Dance hat
For those that are interested:
Trucker hat = Mesh backed baseball cap
Flexfit = Baseball cap with a nylon band that gives the hat a fitted look.
Flat brimmed = Baseball cap with a flat, not curved brim
Snapback = Baseball cap with a plastic band on the back that snaps closed to loosen or tighten
Hook and loop = Baseball cap with a Velcro band to loosen or tighten
I spent to much time and money in Lids...
I'm not particular to one style of hat, but there are two styles of hats that I avoid.
Flat bill and snap backs.
I think the flat bills are down right goofy looking .
I gotta wear one because of my balding head. But there's not a "lucky" one for me.

Same here! Years ago I bought this tool to put a curve in any brim.
I can't stand anything tight across my face, but I'm mindful of skin cancer so I wear this hat. Looks funny, but it works.

Nothing looks goofier to me that a guy with a flat bill hat on and his ears tucked under the hat.

My favorite hat. You can judge for yourself if it's lucky or not.

I do mine by hand ????
Sometimes I wear my “Dan Gleesack” hat
Like some others here, I have had a few bouts with skin cancer. I wear this hat every time I fish. The sun ain't nothing to play with.
Years ago I always wore a ball cap when fishing, then changed to Sunday Afternoon light weight venture hat to maximum sun protection about 15 years ago. When walking or traveling I usually wear a Tilley full brim hat. Probably have dozens ball caps from various ships I worked on, tackle companies and sport teams that I wear occasionally.
Fishing full brim.
Tom
I wear ball caps, mostly camo. I shape the bill by hand. I wouldn't wear a flatbill if you gave me one
Safari style hat. See profile pic. More protection from sun.
Used to always wear a ball cap, but nowadays pretty much everyone in my boat wears these, can’t have enough protection when it comes to the sun.
I have a couple of wide brim straw hats that I wear when it gets really hot out.
Tilley T3 Cotton Duck, full brim.
Underneath it reads:
"It floats, ties on, repels rain, blocks UV rays, won't shrink, and comes with a four-page owner's manual ... Handcrafted with Canadian Persnicketiness."
In 2018 I wore a lot of the Huk Caps and also a few off brand Wide Brim round hats, but now it’s cold and I sport the Adidas Climalite Beenie, keeps the noggin toasty !

I wear a BPS ball cap. The only time I wear a hat is when i'm fishing. I really need to be looking at some of the other styles that offer a lot more sun protection.

I'm wondering if my Fedora would be a bit better than a ball cap.

Ya can give me one...I'll just shape the bill before I put it on!
Wide brim all the time
Mike
Found a Tilly that fit and wear it in summers...have two baseball style hats that I treasure as my head is almost an eight so hard to find hats that fit well.
The style of a fishing hat is of zero importance. The ONLY THING that matters is the LUCK that said hat provides.
Now that this thread has been moved to the fishing tackle forum, I would like to offer more insight into the flat brimmed cap.
I cast farther with it on, and you will too.

I believe this is true.
I have LOTS of hats but I wear the same 3 all the time when I go fishing. They are my lucky caps.

I've never believed in luck when it comes to fishing. Either you've found the spot and used the right lures, or it's a learning experience. 'Luck' - to me anyway - is an excuse.

The power of a lucky hat is real my friends. The owner of the KY Lake resort we vacation at gave me a resort hat a couple years ago. I wore it while fishing on 2 consecutive days and never caught a bass. Put a different hat on and caught bass the rest of the week. Now I wear that hat the day I arrive at the resort and the day I leave. But never while fishing.
It's only weird if it doesn't work........

Got dozens of caps. Mainly wear these when fishing: All 3 are mesh hats that keep my big head cool.
I have a Columbia I got from Amazon for $8.29. Highly recommended.

I wear a hat 99.9% of the time I’m awake, and it’s always a fitted New Era. I wish a few tackle companies would offer one, but I realize the issues with offering 30 different sizes.
Hat snob here Wear a non-structured, low profile soft cloth fishing logo'ed ball cap most every second of the day that I'm awake, but I'm extremely picky about fit and "feel." Have literally only worn a handful over the past 30 years as I find one I like and then wear it exclusively until it simply wears out. Currently have a Bass Pro hat that "fits the bill" and is going on 2 years old - just getting broke in
Only exception to this is that I do have and wear a Sunday Afternoon SPF hat (like tander posted above) out on the water from about April until September. Have had several spots frozen or cut off over the past 8 years or so, so finally got a little more serious about hatwear while on the water.
My outdoor research sombriolet and my lucky St louis Cardinals hat. Check out that beer coozie in the first photo .
Full brim with neck shield. Skin cancer is NOT fun.
Tom
Short trips, I wear a baseball cap and a buff. Longer stuff, I wear a Tilly and a buff. The hat was pretty expensive, but it’s got a lifetime guarantee, and it floats.
I used to wear my Gamecocks cap, BPS cap, or my Yankees cap but by the end of they were drenched in sweat. I switched over to a Huk Kryptek stretch cap and it breathes much better than my other ballcaps. I also started using a gaiter more often than not.
I'd like to switch to a wide brimmed outdoor hat but I haven't yet found one that I like.
Love the TW flex fit hats. Jut noticed that have them marked down to $11 right now for the 25 Days of Saving sale (reg. $20), but they're all sold out. They're black, but they breath quite well.
Most of the time, its a lite colored ballcap. When its really hot,i use a widebrim.
Always : now there are different variations but always Rebel!
Real deal Brazil tarp hat... its surprisingly very lightweight and covers well. If I lost it today I would buy another one tomorrow. That's about the best endorsement I can give.

Am I the only one or have any of you had the setting sun sunburn on the back of your head from a cap with an adjustable strap ? It never fails. Right after a hair cut in the first sunny days of spring.

What is the reason for wearing your hat backwards? Isn’t the reason for the bill to keep the sun out of your eyes?

Sunglasses are for the eyes, the bill is to protect the neck.
I wear a ball cap, I guess, and when it's hot I have a mesh hat that I wear. I have yet to bring my self to wear one of the safari style hats. I know it's better protection but the laughs I get when I have tried one have stopped me.

Not for me. The bill shades my eyes and the sunglasses are for the glare.
A gaitor(sp?) is to protect my neck.

Or a gaitor
I have found that the less of my skin that is directly exposed to the sun, the more energy I have after a long day of fishing.
I have a mole on my face next to my left eye that’s a little larger than the end of a pencil eraser. I’ve been told that it could become cancerous if I get too much sun on it so I’ve worn a hat outside 95% of my life.
So I wear a buff and then a hat and my Costas. It seems to do the trick. Sometimes it’s a flatbill, the bills on them seem a little larger than normal hats, but most of my fishing hats are mesh backed.
That all being said, I’m only 32 and I guess I’m still pretty vein, because I can’t bring myself to wear a full brimmed hat like y’all have posted. My mom buys me one every year without fail and reminds me about the sun and my mole.
I even use to wear a straw hat . I wore that thing out .
On 12/23/2018 at 9:32 AM, Scott F said:What is the reason for wearing your hat backwards? Isn’t the reason for the bill to keep the sun out of your eyes?
There’s more than one reason to wear a hat. I wear hats a lot. It’s not just to keep the sun out of my eyes. I wear them because I like the way they look. Sometimes it’s just to keep my hair covered. Sometimes it’s for protection. I’ll wear it backwards for looks occasionally. Other times I wear it backwards because the bill is in the way.
Reminds me of this .
Goofy looking? Absolutely! My father has had several sections of his face/neck scooped and skin gratfed. Not fun and not prettty. If that's not bad enough, skin grafts don't always take the first time. I'm not gonna fool around with it if I can help it. I'm not looking for love while I'm fishing anyway. Plus my wife wouldn't like that!

You guys have made me really consider going out and getting a bucket hat
I use an Adams Sunbuster extra long visor ball cap available on Amazon
Fedora all day everyday! Spent WAY TOO MANY days out on the practice tee giving lessons with no sun protection. Skin cancer was my reward???? Will NEVERgo outside again without some type of fedora be it felt or straw.
