What is your go-to bait that always seems to catch you a fish when having a tough day? For me I'd have to go with jigs, and chatterbaits.
Jig
Baby creature bait or shaky head.
4 inch senko type bait.
1.5 Size SQBill
I keep 2 rods rigged 24/7/365!
#1: Texas Rig, maybe weighted or un-weighted
#2: Jig-n-Craw

Smokin Rooster
Texas rig worm .
The "Go-To" bait thing, ya that doesn't seem to work for me.
The closest version of that for me would be that there are one or two baits that I can use for each calendar period that routinely produce some fish.
But I haven't found that one magic bait that gets is done during Prespawn, Spawn, Postspawn, Presummer, Summer Peak, Summer, Postsummer, Fall Turnover, Cold Water, and finally Winter.
Often times one or two baits (or Techniques) can remain viable for 2 or even 3 periods.
I will say a jig & craw works all year but even that can be Tough Sledding.
A-Jay
4 inch green pumpkin curly tail grub on a 1/8th jig head.
#1 Bandit 100
#2 Santone swim jig, trailer depending on cover fishing
Ned rig depending on cover has been good this year too.
5" Zoom Super Fluke in White Ice/Watermelon Gold rigged weightless on 3/0 EWG hook. Produces bass year-round for me
Jig & craw, spinnerbaits

This.
Texas rigged Zoom U-tail in gourd green, followed by a 4" Senko.
If you asked me at the beginning of the year- over the past 10 years of fishing I would have said 5" GYCB watermelon creme senko. Always catches me fish.
This year I progressed with my bait casters(2nd year) and learned new techniques. One of which was a texas rigged Powerboat Crazy Chigger Craw. This bait produced all year. I think I have 20+ full packs in the garage and buy some more everytime I am in a tackle store. Fantastic bait.
I have one rod that always has a one bait tied to it, and is always pulled out when bite is tough, the bait is a Dave's Tournament Swim Jig with a Zoom Ultravibe Speed Craw in Green Pumpkin.
When I buy these swim jigs I go through all the packages in the store to get the ones with yellow eyes. I am convinced they are the best.
Faith in a bait is a function of where I'm fishing. If I'm fishing grass in 6 feet of water or less and I'm ticking the tops of the grass with some bait, then I have faith in an old Berkley Frenzy lipless crank. Every year, late March to mid April, I will catch a few 5 to 7 lb fish doing this. Early spring, afternoon from 1:30 to 3 is the best time to do this. ( at least that has been my experience in Missouri, in the clear to semi-clear waters that I fish in most of the time)
If I'm fishing a deep weed line 10 foot to around 20, I have faith in my home made jika rig - with some creature bait to be determined by water color. Throwing soft plastics at objects in 5 to 14 or so feet of water, my bait of choice currently is a quarter ounce Brewer slider head with a 5" paddle tail worm - again, color to be determined daily.
If I think fish are suspended in a tree line, my first choice is a Timber Tiger DC 16, probably in their Texas Shad color, but I really don't think that color matters much with this bait. Whenever I'm confronted with this situation, i.e. fish suspended in trees, there are always a couple of baits that I will always try. Choice #A would be a whacky rigged senko and choice #B would be a 1/4 or 5/16 oz tx rigged 10" Berkley power worm. I generally start with Red Shad color for this presentation but I think that there are other colors that would equally well.
I've got lots of favorite baits for specific instances, but this is enough for now.
Five inch Yum Dinger.
Jig or bladed jig.
A jig with some sort of craw trailer on it.

2x
jig with a craw trailer or a chatterbait
Spinnerbait on a baitcaster, super fluke 4/0 ewg weightless on a spinning rod.
Right now it's the Rage Tail Menace.
Shaky Head Senko. I'm getting more confident with other lures at the moment, but when I find a fishy spot or checking old spots, I start with a senko then other baits after I catch a couple.
DT, Chatterbait, Fat Impact.
I see mostly all soft baits, listed, so far. My comfort zone seems solid in the hard bait section, preferably something like a Berkley Flicker Shad, or a Rapala X-rap or Scatter Rap Shad.
Right Now, today it's a Rage Cut R weightless or not.
Mike
Spinnerbait for me. I will catch a fish on a spinnerbait, guaranteed. Jig and pig is a close second.
I did tons of damage with the Cut-R in the beginning of the year! Awesome bait.On 12/8/2015 at 10:52 PM, Mike L said:Right Now, today it's a Rage Cut R weightless or not.

Lately I have been gaining a lot of confidence in lipless cranks and have been throwing them a lot of the time in recent weeks.
A 4" worm, nose hooked on a drop shot.
small bait on the bottom.
I have more than one.
1. Squarebills
2. Senko
3. Beavers
4. Tubes
This is going to sound really weird to most people, but I know that I can get bit on a popper or a walking bait almost every day between april- october. I have caught more fish on a super spook ans super spook junior than I have with any other lure this season.
H&H Spinner bait. No particular color or set up. Those just flat work for me. Ain't too many ways they can't be fished
next would be a lipless crank. usually in something like Rayburn Red or a Metalllic
Rage Menace or fluke

All of them at the right time, otherwise why would I fish with them.
I do have a growing box of baits that I have ZERO faith in though sitting in the corner of the garage.
What's in that box?On 12/10/2015 at 2:37 AM, gulfcaptain said:All of them at the right time, otherwise why would I fish with them.

Drop Shot
Its far from my favorite technique but it catches fish year long, and you can fish nearly any bait with it.
Not a lot of people try it, but 4" senkos rigged wacky on a drop shot is the best set up of all time for pressured bass.
On 12/10/2015 at 2:46 AM, HoosierHawgs said:What's in that box?
Honestly, Senko's and that style of worm in other brands, jerkbaits, various swimbaits I didn't like after I tried them to no avail, some Zoom Critter Craws, and a few other creature baits and probably a half dozen different worms I've given up on as well.
Edit: I did find a use for the Zinkers though when I cut them in half.
3" Powerbait Swim Shad
Fat ika wacky riged so. cal. style
There's days when it flat-out falls on its face, but MOST of the time when things get tough, I'm going to reach for a green Cut-R. Usually on a weighted hook, but sometimes lightly t-rigged.
T-rig with Culprit Fat Max blue fleck shad.
Dirty jigs swim jig n rage craw trailer. I can fish this bait 100 different ways and throw it into anything with 100% confidence. They smack it hard and I have not lost a fish in 2 seasons on it.
Rage Craw or Rage Anaconda always produce. My go too for sure.
Sweet craw skirt from siebert with a grass jig head from Siebert with a homemade 702 craw.
x3 on the drop shot, was kind of surprised it wasn't mentioned more in 4 pages of reposes. I'm going to have to agree with BigSkyBasser though its not the technic that I want to reach for, but I would have to agree with what was said I truly believe it would work in almost any situation 365. I remember watching a video the G-man put out and he was talking about a c-rig and he called it the quitter-rig. He said if you see me throwing it then I have given up on everything else, that's kind of the same feeling I get when I reach for the drop shot rod.
yamamoto hula grub on a 1/4oz arky jig.
If there's one bait that I am confident I could catch atl east a fish anytime throughout the year it's a dropshot. I have caught fish in every season on that bait.
I have the most faith on any lure I am using at a given time. You need to be 100% confident on each and every cast in order fish at your best.
Dynamite. Never fails.

I go to my CC Super Spot in silver/blue or my modified white SK red eye with a willow that replaced a back hook. I have caught some of my pb on these two and will throw them even in conditions where a T rig might be better.
Senko,weedless.
In the greater central Virginia area it is the square bill Sexy Shad crankbait.
It all depends on the lure you have the most confidence.
For some guys in these parts it is the jig and pig. For others, it is the Shad Rap or spinnerbait.
As for plastics, the shaky head is the leader.
I have said it before and I'll say it again, if I could only have one it would be a 6" T-rig straight tail worm. Although day in day out drop shot and fly lined Stik baits are absolutely deadly out this way.

It's been killing them on our winter tourney series. Green pumpkin with 1/8oz tungsten pegged. Tail dipped in chart jj's.
jig and rage craw, swim jig and caffeine shad most of the summer. 4 in senko early in the year.
However, I always start with something on top cuz if they're hiring on top, forget every other technique!

- 32 “Finesse” Votes
As for myself, a 4" finesse worm on a dropshot, a 1/8 Arkie naked w a craw trailer like a small YUM crawbug, or a TrickWorm on a ShakyHead have gotten me out of more than a few jams...but I know it's probably going to be a tough day if I'm reaching for any of these early
It was surprising after adding these up, less than half of the votes were for what I would consider "finesse" baits.
Since I'm a snowbird...
September- April (GA)- 5" Senko T-Rigged, Watermelon/Black Flake
April-September (MA)- 4" Senko wacky rigged- Pumpkin/Black Green Flake
Keitech Swing Impact FAT 4.8" soft swim bait in Bluegill Flash, rigged with a 4-0 belly-weighted Gamakatsu Superline Spring Lock swimbait hook (1/16-1/8 oz), fished on 20 lb Seaguar Tatsu fluro on a MH to H rod. Or on 50 lb braid in pads or heavy green stuff.
This bait has been sooo totally ridiculous since mid October. I've gone through a couple of hundred dollars worth of these babies since then. So my wife's not happy. But I am. You swim it fast or slow, pause it or not, steady or jerky, whatever. It wiggles and they inhale it. Anywhere there are active, good sized fish.
On Lake Okeechobee, in the glades, canals, and local ponds I do get some bites on jigs, chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, squarebills, senkos, flukes, worms, frogs, lizards, and creatures -- but currently I catch more bass on this Keitech swimbait than on all the others put together. Also, it casts quite far and you can cover a lot of water pretty fast.
I put one under my pillow at night. Because I am in love with my Keitech Swing Impact FAT. (Wife doesn't like that part either.)
Hands Down, Gitzit Tube + 1/8oz Jighead. It's the bait that is responsible for 105 days consistently catching bass this year!
Even caught my PB Smallmouth seen in my current avatar.

Gizits are great . I went fishing once this summer and accidentally left my soft plastics at home . I searched through all my gear and found a pack of black Gizits . I Texas rigged them and had a fine day of catching bass ..
I have thrown the Ned rig on some of my toughest days these last 3-4 months and still have yet to get skunked on it.
Weightless fluke or 3.5 inch tube 1/8-1/4oz
probably a tube or senko
Without a doubt, its the weightless fluke.
Strike Kings red eye shad, catches fish year round in almost every color that they make
If I had to pick just one, it'd be a 1/2 oz jig. I can swim it, pitch it, or drag it. I can fish it in 1 ft down to 35 ft of water. But luckily I don't have to pick just one. My best baits this year was
1. Drop shot roboworm
2. 10 xd
3. Bama rig
4. Jig
Most of my fish are caught in 20+ ft of water
Wacky rigged 5 inch senko in watermelon red magic

How are you rigging these?
Spinnerbaits. I love covering ground and hitting every bank, every point, dock, and structure. You can always almost get at least one hit.
On 1/2/2016 at 11:36 AM, pwahmy said:How are you rigging these?
1/4 oz bullet weight and a 3/0 EWG Offset Worm Hook
I don't think there is just 1 bait I have more confidence over the others, but I do have 1 that is a flat out bird dog lure. Whenever I have a tough time locating fish, I can count on this to find em. It won't get you the biggest one in the playground, but it will tell you where they are.
I would say a baby brush hog Texas rigged.
a 1/2oz blue bug siebert outdoors dredge brush jig with a blue bug rage craw trailer
or a 1/2oz bluegill siebert outdoors fogy (chatterbait) with a bluegill bass pro speed shad
Booyah Spinnerbait. .
Lately its been a Junebug TRD (Ned Rig) followered by a Bandit 100 Tenn Shad crankbait.
1/4 oz Dirty Jigs Swim Jig in dill gill with a candy gill shockwave in warm water and a bluegill rage tail menace in cold water
Live Wild shiner...It shows me how many bass have been ignoring by presentations all day when I decide to catch one and free line it...next time you are fishing a Pond or Lake and can't get bit on a plastic worm which is probably the confidence bait for me...Jig/Texas Rig try and catch a small baitfish or shiner and live line it....I have had days when I was shut out from the bank, chum up a few shiners, throw em on a worm hook, braid, and get bit every time it hits the water...If only artificials worked as well as a big wild Shiner...
#1 Confidence bait in shallow water which is what I mostly fish is a texas rigged worm or soft craw of some type. I would say a black and blue jig with green pumpkin trailer is hard to beat.....
Berkley Chigger craw black/blue, T-rigged, 3/16 oz tungsten bullet weight
or
Zoom Trick Worm, bubble gum
I think I could get a bite on either of these almost EVERY TIME I go, almost any time of year.
Hmm...
Green pumpkin zoom finesse worm
A close second would be a jig-n-craw
1/2 oz jig watomelen redflake
