My absolute most fun lure to fish is........ 2024

fishing user avatarSenko Junkie reply :

My absolute most fun lure to fish is........ my Booyah Pad Crasher Frogs. The most fun that I have on a lake or pond is throwing my frog into the thickest of lilys or grass and bringing it through the holes and to the edges anticipating that splash!!!!  Whats yours?

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

Buzz-baits are the funnest when the bite is on .

fishing user avatarRichF reply :

Hard to beat the frog bite!

fishing user avatarTeam9nine reply :

They're all fun when you're getting bit ? But if I had to pick one, I'd go with a buzzbait. Put the trolling motor down, cover miles of stained shallow water and cover, and anticipate a bite on every cast - never gets old for me.

-T9

fishing user avatarriverbasser reply :

Pretty much any top water. I also enjoy swimming a jig or spinner bait around wood

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

No doubt a daytime surface bite is a ton of fun.

But for me, the allure of dragging a beefy jig around deep structure At Night, is strong.

And feeling that sharp and sudden Thump of a bait stopping strike, - the brief second right before setting the hook, the anxious anticipation of feeling the rod load up & the weight of a stout bass - is just about the top of the list for me.

fishing user avatarbigfruits reply :

nothing wakes me up like a hard jig bite

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Any surface lure is fun.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

Frogs and any topwater for sure are #1 on the fun factor.

#2...........for me at least is a silver buddy style blade bait...........lift.....fall............lift..............fall............go to lift again and there's something on. The bites on these baits 99% of the time take me by surprise as I am often letting it fall on completely slack line. Once in while you'll see the line "tick" but more times than not you won't. And it's always an adventure to see what's on the other end. Most of the time it's a good smallmouth, but I have caught plenty of good largemouth, pike, and walleye on them too.

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

I'll agree with surface lures. Most fun I've had
is with a frog and a jitterbug.

Pad crasher is my favorite lure hands down.I can fish that thing all day long.Close second are swim jigs and a trailer.

I bought four of these silver buddies before I went to Dale Hollow Lake and came back with only one in the tackle box...lol    I had high hopes on hooking a smallie on one but I must have found too much under water cover. Theres three in the bottom of the lake now

fishing user avatarcgolf reply :

Lipless baits. Easy to chuck and wind and just about any fish in the lake will grab them.

fishing user avatarYakalong reply :

Top water hands down the best for me, next would be a senko

Fishing frogs in the slop and around docks.

fishing user avatarcrypt reply :

buzz bait or a spook

fishing user avatarrippin-lips reply :

Blow ups on spook type baits or most any topwater is definitely fun. I like the anticipation of pitching a chunk of plastic into the slop and feeling that big thump though.

fishing user avatartander reply :

Top water when they are schooling using a prop bait with a small leader with a small hair jig behind it.

fishing user avatarOutdoor Zack reply :

Squarebill

fishing user avatarfishwizzard reply :

Hands down it's a fluke.  I love fishing them and getting them to dart around, I love how versatile they are, I love how weedless they are, I love how well they cast and skip, and I love seeing one disappear a split second before I feel the pull.  I love them so much I had a spinning rod made just to fish them.

fishing user avatarSpankey reply :

Skitter Pop or Skitter Prop before sunup on a dead still air, thick fogged water surface, but I just like the bite in general.

fishing user avatarkbeeb374 reply :

Its gotta be a finesse tube on my homemade jigheads in the local river.  I got a new kayak this year that I can stand up in (F&S shadow caster) and I love being able to see structure, cast to that target, and get bit.  I absolutely slayed them with the tubes this year.

.... Of course that will always come second to a good frog bite.. nothin beats that haha.

fishing user avatarsnake95 reply :

For me it's any walking bait, any time.

Specifically: SK KVD sexy dawg, Rapala skitter walk, and Heddon one knocker.

Poppers are a close second, especially at night, but still second place, because I get restless on the pause.

fishing user avatarKidflex reply :

Pitching jigs or dbombs into buckbrush! Something about close quarters combat that gets me going

fishing user avatarMassYak85 reply :

Larger surface lures or a frog gets the blood pumping the most. My second favorite is wacky rig.

fishing user avatarWill Wetline reply :

My vote goes to a Super Fluke Jr. for pre spawn smallies in clear water.

Love to see them agitated by this bait and then smash it!

fishing user avatarJar11591 reply :

Throwing a Rapala Skitter Walk on a foggy morning before the sun is up is as good as it gets for me.

fishing user avatarUPSmallie reply :

Frogs usually take me by surprise the most.  Most exciting topwater for pike and smallmouth for me has been the one knocker.  Whether pike or smallie, they smash it as hard as I've ever seen a fish slam a bait.  I've had to change out twisted split-rings and mangled hooks.  I enjoy the bite marks on the paint though.

fishing user avatarwdp reply :

Buzz frogs for me, Ribbit or Horny Toad. When they're busting on that bite, nothing more fun.

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

It's all good. Whatever puts a tug on the line any given time is my favorite (at thevtime).

fishing user avatarwebertime reply :

Slow rolling a Keitech swing impact fat and getting that thump, THUMP!  A whopper plopper is fun just listening to the babbling baby meets 2 stroke sound.  Finally a deep Carolina Rig when you set the hook and think, "d**n, snag" (big head shake) "oh not snagged."

fishing user avatarMosster47 reply :

Lipless crank.

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

I feel that I should preface with a lesson I learned many years ago, a lesson I'll never forget:

Based purely on dumb luck, I found myself smack dab in the middle of a red-hot topwater bite.

At the time, I was throwing a Stanley Ribbit and was getting action on every cast,

sometimes 2 or 3 strikes during a single retrieve. It quickly hit me that this was a golden opportunity

to experiment. I had about a half-dozen different types of topwaters in my tackle box, and I fished them all.

As it happened, 'EVERY' topwater I threw produced action, virtually on every cast (Strikes, not bass).

Then after about 20 minutes of pure ecstasy, the bottom dropped out and the action fizzled.

Although I continued to throw all the same lures, and utilize all the same retrieves,

I wasn't able to raise a single bass with any lure...Nada!  That was a lesson of a lifetime I'll never forget.

Anyway, with that in mind, my favorite topwater lures include but are not limited to:

> Rapala Original Floater

> Cavitron Buzzbait

> Stanley Ribbit (solid toad)

> Bronzeye Hollow Frog

Roger

I do enjoy the jerkbait or shallow crankin' bite when they are on them.

That says it all.

fishing user avatardwh4784 reply :

Hollow body topwater for me as well. My favorite is a white LiveTarget field mouse. The bass I caught on it this last year absolutely destroyed it, I caught all of them (great hooks), and I actually saw a white mouse running around in the lily pads one day so to me that just adds to the realism factor. I fish a lot of different topwater stuff, but that mouse I just get the feeling every cast that it's going to be annihilated.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Total darknest of a New Moon night & any lure will get your adrenalin flowing!

fishing user avatarWilliam Rossi reply :

I had fun last year with the Spro Rats. Fish hit them HARD.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

It's great moving the Pop-r along making it splash, and then seeing that bigger splash as a bass takes the bait under.

fishing user avatarMaico1 reply :

This year it was the Pagani Siglett and Grand Siglett......really brought the "Brown Ones" up to the surface.

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

You cant jump logs with most topwaters . A buzzbait excels at it. I had a bass jump clear over a log one time , followed my Lunker Lure over . That was a hit .

fishing user avatar"hamma" reply :

Conditions dictate what topwater I throw.

But,. for me? early am, on prime smallie water. When that topwater just barely gets sucked under, tells me its a nice one. When they hit like a freight train? its "usually" a cookie cutter,..I say usually,.. as sometimes a pig will hit hard. But not often.

That vicious topwater hit is the bomb, and can get anyones heart a pumpin. But when I see that bait get lightly sucked under? My heart skips a beat, time seems to stop, as well as breath, and the evident hookset gives me new clues, still breatheless, I evaluate the weight on the end of the line, loosen my drag just a bit so it doesnt break off, I finally breathe again, anticipating the ensuing battle. Whatever is on the line, does matter to me, but,.. its that lightly disappearing lure thats the ticket for me.

How good are the scum frogs? I can't bring myself to buy one.Great price buy man are they uuuugly.

fishing user avatar12poundbass reply :

Was a frog, but now it's the Live Target Sunfish. Fish it the same way but they love that sunfish laying on it's side sliding back and forth. There's nothing better than throwing any hollow bodied top water into the belly of the beast and anticipating what kind of monster might bust the surface and grab it. Then reeling in a bunch of weeds not knowing what's underneath, it's like Christmas every time. Usually turns out to be a tiny bass but hey it's fun no matter what!

fishing user avatarYudo1 reply :

For me, there's nothing more fun than a frog in the pads.  Work it into the openings and some days you can almost predict the bite.

fishing user avatarMIbassin reply :

Gambler big EZ fished right under the surface over top of weeds. Nothing like seeing a monster wake behind your bait then having the bass explode on it. Killed the florida bass this past week on them.

fishing user avatarthebillsman reply :

As most have said, topwater is always fun. I recently got a great deal on a Megabass Beetle-X and I am itching to give it a shot. I've got a private pond I go to that has some great largemouth in it, but also dozens of well fed Rainbow Trout. I'm hoping they both crush it! If it works I may have to fork out the money for a few more and maybe some Sigletts.

The trophy series are great.  The cheapies are not too good.  They are best in HEEAAVY slop.  They land with a *plop* that gets the fishes attention.  I let them land...give it a few seconds and twitch it.  That's usually when they get hit.  I use other brands but the exact frog above is the one I use 95% of the time.  I can usually find them for under 6 bucks but that is NOT why I buy them.  They just flat work and are very durable.  You'll lose the eyes pretty quick but it makes no difference.  I highly recommend and at the price you pay, if you don't like them..who cares?  Don't waste your money on the Trophy Pro's with the rattles.  I bought some and found NO difference in my blow up rate.

I might be the only person who isnt into frog fishing.  It's too stressful and the low hookup rate kills me.  I have been fussing around trying to rig a zman floating pop frog with a line-through treble that exits the top of the lure, but haven't found a good system yet.

It's not my favorite either.  I generally reserve it for times when nothing else can get through, or there is a compelling frog bite.  The right gear, and mindset are key.  Yeah, it's fun, but heartbreaking sometimes.  Some of my biggest catches and biggest failures have happened on the frog.

Cheers to that!

My PB came on my pad crasher

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

I had a 6-1 on a frog.  As I'm bringing it in, a larger fish came and tried to get the bait from my fish.  Looked to be much larger than the 6-1.  Once I weighed the 6-1, I realized the other fish would have likely broken my PB of 7-2.  Hard to know just how big it was.

I know this wasn't asked directly of me but imho the Scum is the softest, and one of the best made frogs you can buy and worth more than advertised.

It doesn't matter to ME how it looks. It's like saying I won't buy the best performing reel because I didn't like the color scheme.

It catches fish, That's all

fishing user avatarGundog reply :

Easily the most fun lure for me to fish is a top water lure even if its a senko run over some lily pads. The only problem is the lake I fish the most is slowly being taken over by northern hydrilla. It is choking out the lily pads. There use to be a large stretch of what I called "spatterdock" (not sure if its the real name) along the shallows. When hydrilla took over, that area disappeared first.

Said it better than I did.  It catches fish

fishing user avatarLooking for the big one reply :

Anyone that doesn't like topwater has something wrong with them, and you can include me with the "topwater gang". For me, big swimbait fishing is the most fun because even if you aren't catching fish you know that every minute your lure is in he water and your presentation is correct your chances go up for a goliath.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

It's close for me between a buzzbait, Slammer, jig, or bladed jig. Topwater is fun for obvious reasons, and the anticipation of how big a Slammer fish might be just adds to it, but that bite may never come also. Buzzbait catches tons of fish in our lakes and are super easy to fish. Bladed jigs are an obsession of mine because they're so effective on numbers of fish as well as big fish. They suit our shallow, stained lakes well too. Jigs are my all around favorite bait to fish. Putting a jig in a nasty place on a heavy rod and line, getting that hard thump and winning a serious tug-o-war with a bug eyed beauty, that's as good as it gets.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Yeah, it's kinda silly, but I would rather fish a jig even when I know something else would be a better choice.

Man, the Whopper Plopper is popping up a lot (pun intended)! I've been wanting to try one, but the reviews are hit or miss. Some people swear by it, some people haven't caught a fish on it ever. Makes me wonder if it's worth it.

I don't fish topwater too often, but that's mainly because it's hard in the fast rivers I fish. I fish from shore and wading a lot when I'm not in my canoe. That makes it hard to fish a popper or spook.

The Whopper could be the fix for that, since it's like a buzzbait and good in current, but then it floats and can be paused too.

fishing user avatarJagg reply :

WI, I'd probably try a Devil's Horse or other prop bait before I tried a Whopper Plopper in swift current.
