Hey all....
I am going through and storing all my gear for the winter and I noticed a few lures that I bought that I just can't catch fish on. I don't mean the "BANJO-minnow" or hokey products like that, I mean a bait that you look at and say to youself, "Now THAT will catch fish!" and then nothing. Could be a jig, a crankbait, maybe a certain plastic bait(s). It's probably a quality bait, right color, perfect for the area etc. but...alas....nothing!!!!
Anyone else have one of these experiences??
Alan (bassnajr)
About half the lures in my tacklebox could fit that category. But it isn't usually the lures fault. It's either because I don't fish them in their proper element or, perhaps more likely, because they don't fit my fishing style very well and I just don't use them very often. I've only had a few lures which I've really fished hard that still "refuse" to bring in at least one or two bass.
Flying Lure, didn't even go under the docks like they said. :
I have a ton of jigs, I see and hear about everyone slaying them on jigs. I have never gotten a single bite on one. I try and try with them, even go out with nothing but a rod and a few jigs, but zip.
Also the chatterbait.
Same with me too. I have quite a few jigs but I just cant seem to get the big hits everybody talks about with them. And my hula popper. For some reason I havnt ever had any luck with it.
For me it's tubes. Some guys (esp up north, it seems) catch the heck out of the fish with tubes. I've tried em a few times and I don't think I've ever caught a fish on one. Now, I've caught hundreds of bass on beaver baits...and to be fair, I probably haven't given the tubes an honest chance (I haven't fished one in over a year). I just have a lot more confidence with a sweet beaver/ugly otter if I'm pitching baits to cover...
I lot of mine have been the hokey stuff. I noticed long ago that alot of it had Bill Dance marketing it. Some of the stuff he has pushed in the last few years. Eels and Craw's. The Strike King Frogs. A spence scout. Never caught anything on some Roland Martin Big Bass spinner baits either. Funny thing on that is the Big Crappie Spinner Baits are still one of my favorite stream smallie lures.
Actual senkos. I can catch fish with similar style baits, but never with actual senkos.
Rage Tail............
Rapala lipless cranks (both the rattling rap and the clacking rap), which is funny because I am a big time Rapala fan, and I caught the hell out of the bass on red eye shads, excalibur lipless cranks and the original Bill Lewis rattletraps.
Other than that, buzzbaits and jigs. I don't fish them often and well enough.
QuoteActual senkos. I can catch fish with similar style baits, but never with actual senkos.
Ha ha. That's funny. I catch fish with GY senkos; T-rigged, wacky-rigged, weightless, unweighted; everything produce for me. The other senko-type baits (Yum, BPS, Strike King) never even caught a cold for me.

Sounds like most people. I don't know what I am doing wrong, but I just can't catch a fish.
I fish them the same way as other worms like dingers, but to no avail.
A friend of mine said that he never could catch a bass on a black and blue jig. I took him out and I caught 20-25 bass that day with one. He still hasn't caught a bass on a black and blue jig because he won't use one.
He also says he's never caught a bass in Arkansas even though he's fished at least 6 tournaments there. He won't ever go back to give it another chance. Go figure.
Rage tail craws and space monkeys. I've fished them multiple times with no bite.
I have caught bass on the Rage chunks and Rage Baby Craws though.
Lucky Craft Sammy! I couldn't catch a thing on it. Switch to a similar color Zara Spook and start catching. I finally sold that thing in the flea market here.
Jitterbug
Mattlures Soft Gill. Can't figure it out.

Same here....
I don't want to get rid of mine in case i actually figure it out and start actually catching fish on em' when i couldn't before.
Hollow belly frogs, jitterbug, any topwater propeller type baits and a whole lot of swimbaits i have fit that category.
Did you ever buy a lure/lures that just didn't catch anything???
Yup, I 've got several Hall of Shamers.
But I also have a big bunch of baits that haven 't caught a thing simply because I 've never fished with them, they are just there doing nothing, about 80% of my baits fall in that class.
I've never really caught fish on Senko's either. I mean... I have, but they come few and far between. I've caught fish on similar stick baits though, so I don't know what the issue is.
Sebile magic swimmer and it isn't for a lack of trying.
It is funny to me how some are mentioning jigs? I never go fishing without them because when fishing is tough they still produce.
Allen
Anything "baby bass" pattern. Never caught a thing with 'em. And I agree on Hula Poppers. I've caught lots of bass on Jitterbugs, but Hula Poppers just don't produce for me. Those bright, bubble gum pink worms (fire-tail worms too) are another non-producer for me, probably because I have zero confidence in them and I quit on them too fast.

I'm not alone after all!
Does this mean I can stop feeling guilty about never getting most of my baits wet?
dancing eels and clacker buzz baits
I neglected to mention that I have never had any success with jigs either.
The problem is that the doggone Senkos keep catching fish so I don't spend enough time with jigs.
I've caught lots of bass on stick baits but always texas rigged (pegged). I've yet to catch a bass on a wacky rig worm.
Always interesting to read the answers to this question. Seems like what does not work for some does magic for others. I am the same way, I have baits that are supposed to be outstanding and they just don't work for me. But on the other hand I have some that are said to be awful that I would not be without. I am sure it is all about confidence.

I think that's a major point. And as Raul and others said above, many of us have baits that we just haven't fished very much (or at all). They may very well work, but we just don't have the confidence in them, and we have our confidence baits that we know usually work. With some folks having limited time on the water, many just don't want to experiment and try/learn new baits.
For me, I am retired and fish every day...and it still seems like I don't have a chance to try all the baits that I have. I have had luck with many of the baits that others have mentioned above - jitterbugs, tiny torpedos, buzzbaits, baby bass patterns, etc. BUT, I haven't given jigs a chance and probably don't have the skill to use them well. With the colder water temps in my lakes, I've been fishing jigs a little bit the past few weeks, and have had a few taps, but no fish... :-?
lipless cranks and buzzbaits.
-gk
Like Raul and others, I like collecting lures, but I don't actually
fish many of them. A couple of lures I have fished fit the theme
of this thread. Specifically, a LC LV500 Chartreuse Shad and Spro
BBZ. The LV500 is a favorite of mine, but this particular lure just
doesn't get bit...I gave it away. I have fished the BBZ more than
ten hours in a variety of situations without every getting a single
strike!
In terms of "lure classes", spinnerbaits are probably my worst
performers. My collection is large and includes lures from current
and past sponsors. Part of the issue is simply not fishing them
enough, but for me, there always seems to be a better alternative.

Quotelipless cranks and buzzbaits.-gk
Just goes to show you
Those are two of my most productive lures.

Nice comment Streak, 'Bout sums it up for me as well Years ago, after locating the fish I would do my best to force feed them an offering... Now, I let them tell me what they want most and it seems they Eat much better
Big O
www.ragetail.com
well lets see swimbait , tubes, jigs, and many other odd stuff ok on the other hand give me 2 baits i will take a texas rig worm and a spinnerbait thats all i need , probably why i dont catch anything on other stuff cause i cant put a spinner bait or a worm down
I have not caught a fish on a buzzbait for 3 years now. I must have lost my mojo because it was the most productive topwater lure I used prior to that. Thankfully dog walkers have cured my urge for topwater fishing. HA!
My buzzbait mojo is on my Christmas list for Santa. I miss the buzzbait bite.
Crankbaits. I can count on one hand how many fish I've caught on them. Most of my waters have algae and other slimy forms of vegetation that fouls them instantly.
Now lipless cranks are another story. Some of my best fish this season came on an XCalibur One Knocker.
Jigs used to baffle me, but I'm getting better. I find using 1/8 oz. Strike King Bitsy Bugs easier to work through the scum than 1/4 oz. and larger.
Hard jerkbaits and buzzbaits don't seem to work for me. The issue becomes the lack of time using and mastering these baits. Flukes and suspending cranks I do well on but can't catch one on a hard jerkbait. As far as buzzbaits I can never get them to run right and would much rather use a jitterbug or a frog for topwater.
Last year I would have said jigs and ragetail baits but I have done very well on jigs with baby craw trailers this year. I will have to say spinnerbaits and hard swimbaits. I've caught exactly one spinnerbait fish and none on hard swimbaits. I have had several follows on the Mattlures hard gill and woody but no takers. Other baits like the magic swimmer, spro bbz shad, and TT baits haven't produced the slightest bite.
Propeller style topwaters like the Smithwick Devil's Horse.
Wow, glad to see I am not alone. What I list here have been 100% non-productive, as in never even a fart near the hook. It doesn't mean that I've signed off on these lures nor have I given up. It just means that I have yet to find the time and condition for them to produce:
1) Spinnerbait - Any brand, size, or color
2) Buzzbait - Any brand, size, or color
3) Rattle Trap - Any size or color - However, Rattlin' Raps work for me... Go figure.
4) Lucky Craft Sammy - Zero, Zip, Nada - However, I absolutely love how easy it is to work this bait. I hope there is a smaller sized sammy about the size of a Rapala Skitter walk. It seems the bass in my waters prefer this size for walk the dog lures. I bet a Sammy in that size would also work.
QuoteDoes this mean I can stop feeling guilty about never getting most of my baits wet?
In this game he who dies with the most stuff wins !
So, ask not what you can do for the BaitMonkey but what the BaitMonkey can do for you. ;D
For the newbies: better hurry up guyz ! you still have a long way to go before even you can get close to us professional tackle hoarders.
I haven't caught anything on the 4" Spro BBZ, but the 6" BBZ has been productive and I've just ordered a couple of more to add to the arsenal.
QuoteI haven't caught anything on the 4" Spro BBZ, but the 6" BBZ has been productive and I've just ordered a couple of more to add to the arsenal.
Only a couple?
Fat Ika. Tried and tried and tried. Gave all of them away.
Every Rage Tail product that I've tried has left me fishless.
*EDIT
Also, Sabile Magic Swimmer hard AND soft... :-[
Bought a Dancin' eel (Bill Dance was promoting) many years ago. Never caught one fish on the darn thing and gave up on it after 2 seasons of trying it. Looks like it should catch fish but it's the biggest joke I've ever bought. Even the d**n "gators" won't hit this thing.
These just won't catch fish for me...
1-Paycheck Baits-The One...not from lack of use. I threw that thing into monster schools all summer.
2-LC LV500
3-Mann's Waker Elite
Short answer......... No.........Have caught LMB on anything I have ever tried, that being said I do not try a lot of different products.
As far as some other species, there are artificial baits they do not work for me, most of those fish require live or cut bait.
Storm Wildeye swimbaits
Sebile Magic Swimmer Hard, although I think I just need more time with them to figure them out.
Everything else seems to just fade in and out for me. Years ago Torpedos, Spooks and Spinnerbaits were my #1 (2 and 3) baits. Those have been replaced by Rage Shads, Flukes and Ika's.
The Jitterbug. But I hope my luck is changing. I've been fishing for almost 40 years and have owned jitterbugs for most of those. No matter where, when or how I fished them, I never caught a single, solitary thing, until this year. I finally caught my first jitterbug bass, and my largest of the year - a tad over 5 lbs.
I don't catch many fish on spinnerbaits. And I've never caught any bass on buzzbaits and have gotten rid of the few I owned.

Definatly not the norm for any of those lures! Might be cause you don't give them enough time? What have you been substituting for them?

Wow - a 5 pounder on topwater - that must have been a rush.
For everyone that has had problems with buzzbaits, you might try downsizing the bait. We don't have a lot of real big bass in our lakes here and I never had any luck with the larger spinnerbaits. I went with a 1/8oz (book weight - actual weight is 1/3oz) Strike King "Mini-ProBuzz" bait and nabbed 31 fish (largest 3 pounds) on them this season and that was just in the late summer and fall. I'll be fishing them more often next season. YMMV...

I think part of it is that for the most part they're built like crap anymore. From horrible stock hooks to off center mounting of hangers and lips, it's a gamble that you'll get a decent one out of the pack. What a shame as it is one of the all time greats.
I remember I had the hardest time catching fish on a chatterbait, drove me crazy. Catch em a little better now but still not as good as I feel like I should.
QuoteI remember I had the hardest time catching fish on a chatterbait, drove me crazy. Catch em a little better now but still not as good as I feel like I should.
Try different retrieves. Sometimes burning them, then let them drop works, they will hit it on the drop. That's just one way to use them. Don't be afraid to experiment, just like any other lure you use.
One of the new Wiggle Warts I bought is just terrible. I just can't get it tuned to run anywhere near straight. It's one of those cranks that I should just toss. I've caught some fish on other identical lures, but that one specific bait just plain don't work.
Rebel Pop-R, Dancin Eel, Mann's 15 and 20+ crankbaits, Just to name a few.
Isn't it something people mention lures that work great for some in their waters? Gives me a good excuse for having so much stuff!
any bait i have ever bought from Storm has been garbage, especially the pre rigged swimbait type baits. They just lay on there side. Also, the Jitterbug. My friend, and everyone else seems to kill them on the Jitterbug, but i have yet to catch a fish, and its not from lack of trying. I have lots of baits i dont catch fish on like the Spro BBZ, countless plastics, 10 inch worms, but its not because they are bad baits, its just that i dont use them often.
To anyone discouraged by the Storm swimbaits try the River to Sea Live Eye Bottom Walker, close to Storms price and a much better bait in my opinion. I caught some very nice fish on them this summer.
I have caught the hell out of fish on those swim shad in the spring and fall dragging it on the bottom. Just goes to show one man's trash is another man's treasure!

My Rapala baby bass lipless rattler is one of my top producing lures!
I even caught a 8in northern pike on it on accident haha!
Any Popper Style baits (hulas, frenzy popper)...probably just not enough experimentation with these
Soft plastic swimbaits
lipless cranks - no success yet (always lose 'em) going to try the Xcalibur one knockers next year though
Used to have a lot of trouble with tubes until I found an awesome local guy who makes some sweet ones (now I catch a ton of fish on 'em).
BPS Tornado Spinnerbait, BPS Balsa Boogie. There was some crank that BPS was pushing that Rick Clunn was endorsing that was supposed to send out sonic waves or something like that. Heddon crazy crawler, double bladed buzzbaits, silver buddys, Lucky Craft Live Pointers. I'm sure there's plenty more but that's all I can think of. Not that a couple of these didn't catch some fish, they just always fell short of what I was hoping they would do for me.
Forgot about the LuckyCraft Live Pointer, very disapointing bait.
Beetle spins. I just cannot catch anything on these baits at all. I probably have 10 or 12 in different sizes and colors.

Try a 5" weightless and weedless on a 1/0 EWG. Fish them anytime you think the fish are in water 4-5 feet deep or less (or at least are at the top of the water column). Cast, let fall for a few seconds, and twitch/swim them back. Or bring them back as a topwater. Should work - I've caught 761 LMB so far this year using grubs.... :

They used to make Jitterbugs out of wood, those were the best, the ones they make now (plastic), I would go with the jointed version. I used to fish them at night, during the summer, when I lived in Massachusetts, and I caught my PB on a jitterbug fished at night. I always use black for night fishing. I would fish them in the evening, nothing, but once it got dark - KABOOM! There's no doubt when a bass hits them. Flat calm nights are the best, early summer. Smallmouth like them too.
BTW, I should mention, the Mass. state record LM which is 16 lbs and change, which is freaky big for a Mass. Bass, was caught on a jitterbug, at night. If I recall it was a musky sized jitterbug, I think they're about 8 inches long.
As for lures that don't work for me, I can't get a bite on Rapala DT 10's. They sure look good, but nada for me.

x2 on the jitterbug, caught my PB largemouth this past summer as well at 8:30pm. I used an older yellow one, it was a 3/8 size I believe.

i presume you are being sarcastic. those can be very productive fished in the right time and place. try the MR series.
I have lots of them also. But my problem is that I'm dragging them through water.....with no fish in it.
My "lowest confidence" baits:
Rapala clackin' rap
Rage shad
10 inch worms
I really like fishing these baits, but I really think I just haven't used them in the proper circumstances. I look at them and I think they gotta be fish catchers. I think it's me, not the baits.
Big O... help!
I was going through my box last night and I came across two more. In line spinner baits and grubs. I just can't seem to do any good with them.
I did some tackle box rummaging as well and found one more to add to my list. Zara Spook. I've thrown that thing hundreds of times in conditions that should produce top-water strikes and....nothing.

I found a Zara Spook in great condition hanging on a tree limb a few weeks ago. I'll give it a go next spring - hope I can "walk-the-dog" and nab a few fish! I love value, and a bait that cost me $0, and catches a fish, is the ultimate value ... ;D

You gonna love taking the Zara for a walk. For me, a Spook Jr is the ticket.
I gotta admit, in the 15 years I fished for bass, I can honestly say I I never used a Jitterbug. How sad is that.. ;D

I didn't fish them a lot, but I caught a few bass on Jitterbugs this year. It was a double rush because the bait was one of my lures that I had in the 1960s.
plop, plop, plop, plop, plop, plop, plop, plop, plop, plop, plop, plop - whoosh ! Fish on !

A Zara Spook and Spook Jr are my go to top water baits. Summer 2009 I had a 38lb sack in 28 minutes all on a Spook Jr. I was fishing it fast enough that it would pop out of the water about 3 inchs.

thanks for the info, ill try this when the spring rolls back around
Years ago my dad gave me a topwater lure that I had never seen before and still haven't saw anywhere else. It has a soft body w/ a flat hard tail. Were the line attaches it is connected to a "rip cord" or drawstring like a kids toy. When you cast it the string pulls out and the tail flutters on the water for about 10 seconds. In calm water it looks pretty cool and makes a wake sitting still. Every once and while I'll pull it out to show someone and cast it a handfull of times. Not even a boil, ever!
Knock off Senko...Tried several brands
Just bought NetBait Salt Licks and will give them a try. For all the money i've spent experimenting with stick baits I could have bought a couple year supply of Senkos.
zara spooks and those walk the dog baits. Covered plenty of water but unfortunately they always come back to the boat without fish :'(
It's all about the rythme with Spooks and other walk the dog baits. For me a slow constant retrieve is good when it's calm but when there is a chop on the water or the fish are really chasing you can work it with fast snaps and make it jump all over. They are by far my favorite clear water top water bait.
