First time out with the whopper plopper 90 and caught 7 in about an hour.
7 ft medium fast spinning setup.
Nice! How does it compare to a buzzbait?
I have not fished buzz baits very much. I like this bc it does not have a metal sound and you can pause it if you need to.
I had 3 fish miss it, but I doubt they would have got a buzz bait either.
Nice fish! My impression (of the 90 at least) is that the more apt comparison is to a propbait, rather than a buzzbait. I've caught a few fish on a straight retrieve, but I've actually had more success with short pops, twitches, and rips with pauses in between, which is the same as the way I fish a torpedo.
What color?
Very nice.
My first time out with the 90 plopper I caught 10 bass in 30 minutes. It can be a very productive number and size bait! I just bought another 90 today. Have only tried my 130 once with no success yet. Congrats on a good outing!
When you have your most "luck", are you reeling steady, or walking/popping the lure? I still have had no luck with mine. 90 in loon color
I've tried a 90 in perch several times for short periods with no success. I really haven't given it a fair shake though. I have a 130 in loon that I'm going to try next time out, probably later in the week at sundown. My local lake has been nutty crazy with boats, jet skies and plain old fashioned jerks lately. Fall will be here soon though.
Mine was the loon color and every one was on a steady retrieve.
I fished the 90 in bone the other day. I fished it on a slow and steady and caught mainly largemouth with a couple smallies mixed in. The guy fishing behind me pulled out an old single rear spin top water and fished it with more pops stops and rips. Caught a 2lb behind me.
My wife just caught a 4lb. large mouth on the Perch the other night. Her's was a slow but steady retrieve. I wasn't having any luck with my Jackall Pompadour but to be honest it wasn't the proper conditions for the Pompadour which people say is best to throw in windy conditions and that night was very calm. I took her rod and threw out and caught a 2lb. myself and there were at least 2 - 3 strikes that didn't hook up too.
4 hours of fishing this morning on and off with this lure. Who needs a double w.p.? Plopper Twofer!
That is the first time I have seen a fish on the back hook. All the fish I catch are on the front hook. I use a WP 90 in Blue Blood with a steady retrieve and do well with it on heavily fished bodies of water.
I think the darker colors do better since I have a couple of 130s in lighter colors and haven't caught a thing with them.
They usually are hooked on the front hook with the back one buried in their side or stomach. Most of the time anyway. This time the larger one bit first and the other one did everything it could to get at the little black bird with the yellow face.

I'm new to the whopper. Wish I had tried it sooner! Have had several great days with it, and quite a few big fish too. One particular day, I was getting lots of attention with it, and a few light bites. It seemed the fish just weren't committing to it. I would immediately follow up with a wacky worm, and just about every time, the fish would strike immediately, and strike hard. Next time you miss a fish on the plopper, immediately put a worm on their head, and see what happens. Good luck! Where in western MA are you? I used to fish the Housatonic and the Hoosic rivers quite a bit.
I will try that. I always have a wacky rigged senko tied on.
I'm in North Texas.

I have noticed this as well. I have yet to catch a fish that was not hooked by the front treble. I actually just tweaked my 130, took off the back hook and beefed up the front one. I tested it out and it didn't alter it's swimming at all, if anything it now lays a little bit more parallel when paused.

I was thinking about taking the back hook off but I finally caught one on the back hook yesterday.
I have had very good luck recently on the 130 in a few different colors but I believe the color T1000 has been producing the best in the clear water that I fish. I typically throw the bait, wait for the rings to move away, give it a couple of quick twitches to spray a little water and let it sit again, if this does not produce a fish, I will then crank it a short distance and repeat the process through what I believe is the most productive water. I have one 90 sized bait in the Yoda color but have not had any reason to throw it so far. A large majority of the fish come on the front hook.
Another color that has been a good producer is Powder.
I do nearly the same thing with the 90. Let the rings dissipate, two or three pops, then a slow steady retrieve. I've had a couple take it while it was just sitting after it landed and I was distracted. Otherwise it's 50-50 between the first two pops or on the retrieve shortly after the pops. Then again I've had a few take it as I was pulling it out to recast pretty shallow and close to shore.
I am in Pittsfield, MA. If I had a kayak I would fish the Housatonic river despite all of the PCB's. Huge smallies and pike in there. Sadly I don't yet have one. For me it wouldn't be worth going after the stocked trout there in Pittsfield anyway with all of the pollution.
My 9 year old loves his Whopper Ploppers. His favorite color is called Munkey Butt. Wonder why?
I think this is a great bait for kids. They don't have to have much skill to catch fish on it. They basically
just cast, reel and set the hook.
My 5 year old caught a Bass on his 2nd cast with the WP 90.
On an unrelated note, after being a member here for a very, very long time this is my 1,300th post. lol I see
dudes that have been here a week with more posts than I have.
I actually bought this for my step son for that exact reason. Reel and set the hook.
When I looked at them on TW the other day they only had the 90 in the silent now? Am I crazy or has the 90 always been silent? I got mine at bps and it rattles pretty good.
I just got a 90 in loon today, Dick's is carrying them and I snagged the only one on the rack in that size/color. I've been wanting one badly for sunrise smallmouth fishing. I changed out both trebles to 2/0 Gamakatsu octopus circle hooks, we'll see how it works. I hate using trebles when fishing from a kayak, mostly for personal safety reasons.
Welp, you guys got to me, dispite being almost exclusively a soft plastics guy, I just received a WP90 in the mail
My plan is to fish it under some docks, how sturdy is this thing? Will a single hit on a piling destroy it or can it take a little abuse? When I throw a t-rig under there I like to hit the pilings both as accuracy practice and because it seems like having the lure just drop in the water gets me bit more often. Obvously I will not do this with a hard bait, but I do wanna throw it as close to them as is safely possiable.

I've smacked mine on the side of my boat a few times, no damage done. I wouldn't purposely hit it against anything hard though. I've had more luck under overhanging trees than docks. I'm sure both will produce at the right time though.

You won't regret it...it's a VERY fun lure to fish with, very versatile as in you can chug it like a popper, do a steady slow retrieve or horse it back in creating a TON of commotion. Have fun with it :).
I've had absolutely ZERO luck with my perch 90.
Smallies absolutely crush the plopper 90. Steady retrieve.

Patience grasshoppa. Keep at it. Try weedlines, open water and parallel to shore early morning if you're bank fishing. Those are my 3 favorite techniques for it.
I've dragged mine across rocks pretty routinely this last week as my favorite pond has dropped dramatically and exposed a ton of hard stuff and only a little paint under the nose has come off. Very solid bait.

I've been using the whopper plopper for about 2 years now (I think). I'm a bit more comfortable throwing a black cavitron, I think it's got better sounds and vibrations. But the fact that you can stop a plopper and twitch it is a pretty solid advantage over a buzzbait.
I did lose my plopper a bit ago, had monkey butt, going to buy powder next. Does anyone prefer the 130 over the 90? And now they've got a silent one?

Keep at it, my wife just caught her PB, a 4lb.-er last week with it and than I caught another 2lb.-er with it soon after. It WILL produce!!!
I've thrown my 90 on 4 different times and not even anything remotely close to a bite. I've reeled it slow, fast, in between, stop and go, and popped it. Notta.

Yep.
Just got home from catching my new PB (5.02 lbs) on the blue blood WP 90. I also caught my smallest LMB and a seagull! I was about ready to give up on the WP as it hasn't produced the past 2 times I have gone fishing but decided to throw it some more. I found it works really well on heavily fished ponds and lakes.

Proof that it works. Like any lure type, it's not always going to work but when it does you have to love it. Very nice Cav.
Keep trying guys, don't give up on it yet! Caught my biggest Plopper bass today, but did not weigh it. What a fun fight!

Great advice! If you need to cover a lot of water this is the lure to use.

Absolutely! Great to cover a lot of water, and I'd imagine it will really get bedding bass agitated. I love throwing this thing around laydowns and under low hanging branches. I've caught multiple pike on this too, but that's the risk you run in WI lol.
I finally encountered the hook problem I have read about on posts in this forum. I was fighting a 1-2 lb fish this morning when the o ring on the front hook broke. Fortunately the fish was stuck on the back hook so I was able to remove the front hook from its mouth before releasing it.
Any suggestions on replacement hooks?
We caught 3 more last night on the 90 Perch...2.5lb., 3lb. and 3.5lb.
Threw it all morning at a 4 acre reservoir with no luck.

d**n. Unfortunately like any other lure it isn't perfect. I've seen a school of bass completely ignore my WP and wanted to scream!
Keep at it.
People swear the 130 is better than the 90 but I can't get a bite on the 130 to save my life.
i like the 130 better just because i like how it floats easier than the 90.

might as well get a double plopper too. its pretty fragile but you can use it in thicker areas where the regular plopper picks up too much debris.

I like the way that sounds for double plopper as far as debris and may just end up trying it out. I've heard the wires get bent very easily after fish strikes. Is that true?

yes it is, but after fiddling with it a few times you kind of know which way to bend it to swim correctly.
My last few times out I only had one or two bites with the plopper but that doesn't mean I won't still throw it. I've got to give my 130 another chance as I gave up on that one quickly.

They aren't biting the 90 where they used to so like you I might have to go to the 130 to see if they like that better. They used to kill it at my usual pond but not anymore

I'm in the same boat.... no pun intended. I've caught 24 bass on the 90 and 0 so far on the 130. I definitely haven't used the 130 enough to compare though. Haven't used my Double Plopper enough to really judge it yet either.
I don't think I'll try the double plopper unless the price comes down. Even then I wouldn't want to buy it knowing its kinda flimsy from what I've read here.

I think I am going to wait for it to go on sale before I take the double plopper plunge.

I'm in the other boat Travis.... my 90 hasn't made it outta the box, but I use the 130's exclusively. The bass just crush the 130 with a vengeance that I can't get myself to throw the 90. And I'm sure we can attest those violent strikes is what makes fishing it so much fun!
I fished the 130 for about 45 minutes in slightly choppy water without a bite this morning. This has almost always been unproductive water for me anyhow so I was just killing time after work.
Threw my Whopper Plopper 90 for the 6th different time today and finally caught a LMB. It was a little dink less than a pound and he hit right infront of the lure, almost like he missed it then hit it again and was money on the second hit. I've not really been impressed with it yet. I've done about every type of presentation possible and I've thrown it of a morning, midday, and at dark with both calm and choppy water. I've also tried it in shallow water around structure, over grass beds in 6-8 ft and also over open water toward the deep.
My best topwater right now is a Boyd Duckett Walk the Dog Popper.

How did this go for you? I'm always looking for follow ups. This one seemed pretty intriguing.
Seems like people either slay with the Plopper or can't even buy a bite. I like the 90 so much I just ordered a 3rd one. Now I have the I Know It, Munky Butt, and Bluegill colors.

I've only used it a bit, first fish knocked it straight out of the water and never had it in it's mouth. But the next fish took it down and it hooked up nicely and I landed it no problem. In a different thread I was advised the hook choice is likely not the best, someone pointed out some different ones that are specifically made to replace trebles. If I lose a few with the hooks I put on it I'll switch them out and try again.
Do you remember what kind those were?
I believe they are these ones, made by Owner.

Thanks
I threw my 90 on Sunday at a pond that has always produced smaller fish but on Sunday just as I was about to give up throwing the plopper BAM! hooked up to the biggest fish I've pulled out of that pond ever which has given me hope that there is bigger fish in that pond. I'll toss some pics up later after work

I probably catch more fish on the powder color than any other, the T1000 color works well in clear water and the bone is not bad either. I do much better on the 130 then I have on the 90.
I'm still hesitant to throw the 130 but I've mostly been fishing the same pond all summer. The pond has dropped quite a bit and I can't shake the idea that it's too big a bait for the shallow pond. I'm waiting for my favorite smallie spot to get active again and maybe they'll smash the 130. One can hope.
Cloudy day, light rain, ripple on the water, throw that 130 and hold on.
seem to be having some issues resizing the picture in order to post it. any help would be appreciated just shoot me a pm

I've mostly just used the I Know It color since that was the first one I got. Can never go wrong with a white/chartruese combo. I've only thrown Munky Butt one time out and Bluegill is still coming through the mail.
Nice fish pics. Thanks for sharing.
I have yet to catch anything on my 130's. Granted I've only fished the Loon 130 couple of times but still, nothing...not even a bite. We were actually almost skunked last night with the 90's too but at least we had a couple of blow-up misses and my wife did catch one dink about the size of the lure itself...lol. I'm hoping the 130's will produce some day soon but right now it's been the 90's that are what the fish want. I would really like to get two more, Rainbow Trout and Blue Gill to round out my 90's.
Plop.. This ?!
Buy some Gambler Toads and Owner Double Hooks... Just kidding!! ?

90's thru TW. Just wondering what's the typical set-up you use. Anyone throw these on Spinning gear?
Thanks for all replys.

Sure you can fish them on spinning gear, but they fish nicely on casting gear as well. I fish mine on a 7' M/F with a 7.1 baitcaster and 20lb braid with no leader.
Finally pulled the trigger on one of these! I wanted to wait until the stores started stocking up on fishing gear so I could buy one in person. I wasn't 100% sure what color to have, I don't really have a go to topwater color. But there are perch here, sooooo....
