The Most Expensive Lure You Lost 2024

fishing user avatarmasterbass reply :

I bought a bunch of megabass and lucky craft lures over the winter (bait monkey is too strong in the winter).  As spring is upon us I'm trying to get up the courage to actually use them this year.  I've lost my share of lures, but up to this point the most expensive lure I've lost is an $18 yozuri and it made me sick.  It's bad enough losing an $8 rapala, but a $25 vision would ruin my day lol.

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

Routinely speaking, a jerkbait is one of the last styles of baits I'd expect to lose.

Simply because it's usually a open water presentation, so if I'm losing them I'm definitely doing something fundamentally incorrect.

I once had every bit of tackle stolen from me.  What a nightmare!  It took a few years, and a few thousand dollars, to get back to having what I needed.  After that, I am no longer afraid to use any lure.  I can lose a $25 lure as long as I have the rest!

fishing user avatarHanover_Yakker reply :

Koppers Live Target Bluegill - $10, I know it pails in comparison to some of the swimbaits that you guys use, but what hurt most about this one is that I had literally just tied it on and made one cast.  It got hung up on some sunken submerged chicken wire pens on a managed lake.  Sucked!

Unfortunately, I've been in the boat with guys who've casted off High Power Herrings and Deps 250s. Ouch.

I lost an entire A-Rig this winter. $10-12 for the A-Rig, $5 for the jig heads and another $4-5 for the swimmers. I was not happy.

Wow, that puts things in prospective. I might have a nervous breakdown!  I left my boat docked with my tackle in it one night and couldn't sleep I was so worried a night fisherman may hop in there and get my tackle!

fishing user avatarbuzzed bait reply :

invest in a lure retriever/plug knocker and fish your lures hard.  there's about a 95% chance of getting them back if you can reach them with a lure retriever.  i have the BPS bill dance unit and it paid for itself after about the 2nd use.

that said, i lost a yellow bluegill lake fork popper that hurt more than anything.  they go for about $11 so not the most expensive one i ever lost, but the thing had caught who knows how many fish.  something about this one stupid popper just killed it in this local apartment complex pond i fish.  i snagged it one day in a limb that i just could not get it out of.  to this day i want to climb that tree and find that bait.....

same lake, nearly same tree i lost a weedless hudd that was likely the most expensive bait i lost to date.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

I get upset when I lose any bait, not just expensive ones.

fishing user avatarBridgerM reply :

After a couple of years of not fishing, my dad, brother and I went out one afternoon and we all used my tackle. Naturally the most expensive crankbaits were chosen and subsequently lost on the cast. 4-5 baits were lost in a few hours, a few were LC. Not sure about the rest. I don't recall us catching any fish that day. I have one Pointer 78 left from those days and rarely use for fear of losing it also.

fishing user avatarVolFan reply :

Two Deps 175s within about 10 minutes of each other on my first fishing trip in NC. One had been my favorite for years.

fishing user avatarBrnnoser6983 reply :

A $10 Rapala... and I didn't even lose it, my brother in law did..

But I cringe when I think of the day I might lose a Bbz shad/rat or even my shell cracker..

fishing user avatarbassinyea reply :

Losing any lure sucks, but especially an expensive one that you have caught tons of fish on.  One in particular sticks in my mind from last year I had just caught a bass on a vision 110 in deadly black illusion color.  I was excited because the fish were biting so good that morning.  After releasing the fish i jumped up as quick as I could to fire another cast not realizing that the line had gotten wrapped around my rod tip while landing the fish.  I go to cast and the line snaps and the lure goes flying 70 yards out and lands in the water.  Problem is I had changed out the hooks to get the bait to slowly sink so of course I could not go over and get it.  No telling how many fish I had caught on that one bait but it had lost a lot of paint for sure.  Made me want to pack it in and head back to the ramp and thought about it the rest of that day and matter of fact it still makes me mad to this day!

fishing user avatargulfcaptain reply :

Most expensive would be a Hudd. ONLY lost one in the last 3 years, but on the bright side, have found several 6 inch hudds and even an 8 inch triple trout.  ALL my really expensive swimbaits float.  If I'm gonna cast a $100 bill in the water I want to be able to retrieve it if it happens to free itself from my line.

fishing user avatarMaster Bait'r reply :

I won't even post a valid entry in this thread for fear of jinxing myself.

Hush little babies, daddy's not gonna lose you in a cold, dark lake to toothy critters and that's that.   :topic_closed:

fishing user avatarjunyer357 reply :

Mine i cry the most over are actually a few homemade spinnerbait i only paid $3 bucks each for about 20 years ago. Its not the bait so much as the blades. They have an "ultra vibe" arrowhead blade. Similar to a traditional willow but indented some like an arrowhead at the swivel end. It is just a lil diffrent but very effective and i had a ton more confidence in them. I have searched high and low for new blades like this and come up empty. Im down to only 1 now and im too scared to throw it. Any help on locating these blades is greatly appreciated.

1 lv500, 5 DUO spybaits, 3 DUO pencils, broke 3 110 got all replaced for free, also lost 2 buster K's

fishing user avatarEmersonFish reply :

Apparently the most valuable baits I've lost have been pre-Rapala Wiggle Warts; but they were not expensive when I bought them. I stay away from the high-end baits because I'm not one to spend much time trying to get baits back if they are hung. Same reason I don't use expensive golf balls. If I don't see it in 20 seconds, I drop another.

You'd think that would be true unless your brain disengages from your fingers. I had just tied on a Lucky Craft Pointer. The area I was fishing had a bunch of northern so I put on a light steel leader to keep from being bit off. I cut what I thought was the tag end of the line and tossed it over the side. Unfortunately, I cut the main line instead and with the little added weight of the leader, the normally suspending Pointer sank out of sight. Oh nooooo.....

Done that a few times. With lures and tools. Last one was i did cut the tag end but tossed the clippers in and dropped the tag end down. I think its like forgetting to put the plug in. You do this long enough its gonna happen. Idc who you are.

When the pike bite is on - every thing is done over the side and every thing is tied to the boat - super long nose pliers & the can't do without it - jaw spreader.

fishing user avatarRatherbfishing reply :

Of course it always stinks to lose an expensive baits (which is why I will only go so high) but the most painful losses are those which are almost irreplaceable.  Once, on a trip to Canada's Lake of the Woods I had borrowed a friends Cordell Spot.  The bite was slow and though we'd pick up the occasional smallie, they were few and far between.  But that Spot was like a sirens call and it was ALMOST one fish after the other.  When the action slowed, I made the mistake of cutting it off and my friend, seizing the opportunity, snatched it back up, tied it on, and proceded to catch more fish with it.  I tried practically everything in my box but only that single bait seemed to get any real results.  I don't know if it was the sound (it did seem louder than usual) or if it was the color but that single bait WAS the magic bullet.  When he eventually lost it to a snag he got real quiet.  I was sad, too, but at least now he and I were on an even playing field.

fishing user avatarBasshunterJGH reply :

8 inch bbz-1, I was using it on lighter tackle (16 lb mono) and cast into the wind got a backlash and it went flying. It was a slow sink model, never saw it again. ;(

I too had all my tackle, rods and reels stolen on one occasion, and my boat in another occasion. That's like getting punched in the gut.

I've lost 2 68 Hudds and had a 110 magnum fall apart on me.

fishing user avatarDogmatic reply :

3 Baitsmith Shads and an Umbrella rig, a Hudd or two, plus a a couple other $20+ baits.

fishing user avatarjeff25 reply :

Kvd jerkbait after one cast. It was only 8-9$ but still sucked

fishing user avatarDylcook91 reply :

One comes to mind, a Strike King elite buzzbait($5) not expensive but had so much sentimental value to me. There was just something about this particular one that was like magic. It would catch fish when nothing else would. I had at the time also caught my personal biggest bass on it in a heavy rain storm, and the bass exploded on it. It got to the point where there was no longer any paint on it, and it was missing more then half its skirt. I made the decision to retire it, with the fear I would one day lose it. Then for some reason the next season I decided to try it once again....wouldnt you know thats the last I ever saw of if...flew off on a cast towards the center of a pond. I would pay $100 to have that lure back.

Other then that, I have lost countless numbers of my favorite Booyah spinnerbaits that cost about $6. Over the years Im sure it would total  more then $100 worth hahaha

fishing user avatarmmkeel reply :

Before I started purchasing my own tackle I lost a good bit of my grandpa's Rapalas.  He used to tell me I needed a hunting license not a fishing license since I spent so much time in the trees.  Nowadays, I do whatever I can to get the lure back.  Lost a $30 umbrella rig a couple weeks ago, that hurt.

fishing user avatarWIGuide reply :

I don't usually don't buy baits that are more than $10 due to the large number of toothy critters around here. It doesn't matter what you use, their teeth are as sharp as razors. So many times you set the hook and just see line flying back at you. Unfortunately I managed to lose a 3700 tray with at least $100 worth of crankbaits in it. That one hurt a bit especially since it was back in my broke high schooler days haha

fishing user avatar*Hank reply :

The most expenssive lure i remember losing was an LC pointer $15-

$1 plastic Stanley Ribbit frog.  Unfortunately attached to it was $20 Power pro, $109 Daiwa Ballistic T3, and a $99 Fenwick Silverhawk.  Frog hooks got lodged in the back of the boat on 1st cast and sling shotted it 50 ft into the river. 1st day out with new setup.  Still makes me sick.

$12 swimbait on the third cast on Lake Gaston.

fishing user avatarPhelptwan reply :

Lost an entire tacklebox of spoons while pier fishing one year.  10 years worth of grabbing spoons of every shape/size type and all but the one on my line knocked into the water by some idiot not paying attention to the other fisherman on the pier.

He later mailed me a $75 gift card to Gander Mountain because he felt so bad, but it didn't even come close to replacing the number of spoons I lost.

fishing user avataryugrac reply :

I lost a custom painted bluegill squarebill crankbait on the first cast I used it, something with teeth, felt the tug, set the hook it switched directions and "ping" gone. Cost: $25.. I did hit my trolling motor casting a umbrella rig and the line broke as I was throwing it, it flew 1 hundred feed or so and landed in a tree, I ran the boat to the shore and unhooked it and got it back. Had the same thing happen with a Strike King 6XD crankbait, I watched it to see where it landed, thankfully it was a floater, I just went and got it!

This. This is the most gut wrenching sad story of the bunch, and at the same time would have been hilarious to watch happen. I just picture you standing there in a cast finishing pose with a bewildered look on your face. Like, "how the f#$k did that just happen?"

The worst I have lost is the top tray of my 3 tier plano box, a rod and a shoe. Tipped the ol canoe in some backwater when the old man reached to grab a dropped rod. Soon as he leaned over the gunwale we were in the drink. My tackle box was floating next to me and I was able to recover it (minus the contents of the top tray) before it went to the bottom. My second rod's line was looped around my leg so I 'reeled' it in. It wasn't until I was climbing back in on the bank that I realized my shoe was gone too. We had a good chuckle about that and it took the sting out of losing the rods and tackle (only slightly). My wife was supportive and listened to me mope about losing all that stuff. But after the second week of hearing me wimper, "I lost all that tackle" she had enough.

The fastest lost lure I have ever seen would go to my brother-in-law. He refuses to remember how to tie a fisherman's knot and it has cost him so many lures on the cast it isn't even funny. He will struggle for 30 minutes trying to get a knot on the lure, toss it out, reel in an empty line and repeat. I have tried so many times to teach him, it just never sticks from one outing to the next. But his all time best/quickest loss was while tying on a berkley weighted plastic swimbait, he just lost grip of it and dropped it. It bounced into the water and out of sight. He just shrugged, pulled another one out and said, "well, at least I didn't waste all that time tying the knot".

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

The most expensive I have lost was a megabass griffon that I ordered from a tackle store in Japan.  The line snapped during a cast and I watched $30 just float away down the river.

fishing user avatareverythingthatswims reply :

8" BBZ Slow Sink and a Hudd 68. My I almost lost an s-waver 200 but after spending an hour trying to get it out of the tree standing up in my kayak holding a 12' branch to swat at the bait wth, while trying not to fall out, I actually got it back!

fishing user avatarAQUA VELVA reply :

I haven't lost a lure in a long time but I remember night fishing with a buddy many years ago only because he lost four spinnerbaits in a row. They were special made by a friend of ours for this trip and we each had six of them. We could see fish stacked up like cord wood on the FF in the shallows so we were pretty excited. On his first cast his line went limp all of a sudden and then you could hear the sound of the lure going through the tree branches on shore! OK, weak spot on the line, maybe, re-tie. Next cast same thing. Next cast same thing. I'm catching fish left and right, he's starting to look worried. He ties number four on and it vanishes just like the first three! By this time I'm thinking, man, if you throw all of those spinnerbaits into the trees, you are NOT getting any of mine. Finally I said show me how you are tying those on so we both turned on our hat lights while I watched him. He was tying a Trilene knot and we both realized at the same instant that he was leaving out an important part of the knot. After that, everything went well and we had a great night!

I sort of did the same thing. Was tying on a Rooster Tail spinner when my girlfriend hooked into a fish. I ran over to help her in case it was a big fish, thinking the spinner was already tied up and just letting it drop to hang out of my vest. Turns out I never completed the knot and I heard it hit the dock, then saw it slip between the wooden planks and out of sight...

I recently lost a Booyah Pad Crasher and a Live Target frog 5 minutes apart from each other to the same tree...

fishing user avatarJLBrown reply :

I'm a bankbeater, so loosing lures is a common thing.  The one that bothers me the most is when I lost my favorite topwater, a Owner Zip-n-Zig.  I had just caught a bass, reached down, being cautious of the sharp hooks, and the line broke.  The bass flopped in the water, swam off, jumping several times trying to throw the bait.  Lost!!!

Now, as I'm walking the banks I always find lures.  My latest find was a Jackall Binsky.  That's one weird looking lure!  Never seen anything like it.  Found it on a online retailer and saw it was a $15 lure.  Cool!!!

fishing user avatarRanndomUndead reply :

Had a 15 dollar lipless crank snag on a stump the other day....then as im trying to wiggle it free the knot failed...so i rightfully jumped into 45 degree shoulder high water in jeans and a hoodie without delay to get it back.....

Almost lost that one...the only hardbait ive lost was a 5 or 6 dollar buzzbait though...knot failed on that one too and sent the lure flying 100 ft while my line went about 5 >_<

Has to be an Alabama rig. $15 for the rig, $10 for the Jighead's and swims, so $25. Not THAT bad but as a high school student with no job, kinda sucks.

I lost a TON of Ronz tails in St Maarten fishing for barracuda this past week. We troll off a little dinghy and were just slaying them, but each fish took a whole tail, so that can add up.

It really was the strangest feeling ever.  A lot of people I have told the story too can't understand how that could happen. It felt like I hooked on to the back end of a Mack truck.   It literally was ripped completely out of my hands.  Oh well I can look back at it and laugh it at a little bit now and is a good story to bring out to get a laugh or 2.

Lost my a Megabass pop-x this morning. First cast, two pops and a huge fish fkr a 1/4 acre pond. Got it right up to the bank on 6lb line and was fighting my uncle's dog to get away from the fish as I was trying to lip it. He jumped in after it and snapped my line. I went in after the fish but couldn't get a grip. Luckily it was a catfish and not a bass. Probably 5+ lbs at least. One heck of a fight. Guess I'm in the market for a new pop-x.

fishing user avatarsofarfrome reply :

When I was a kid, 10 yo or so, I was out trout fishing in western NY on April 1st. I had a small tackle box full of "stuff" I was carrying with me. I was crossing the stream that was flowing pretty fast and slipped on some rocks. The plastic tackle box was dropped into the water and away it went. I had every fishing lure/tool I owned in that box. In 1970 dollars it was probably worth $50. Without doing the math I believe it was quite expensive in today's dollars.

Didn't think of using a steel leader and on the first cast next to a laydown something big whacked the bait and I immediately set the hook only to have nothing but braid dangling in the air. That new bait wasn't in the water for 5 seconds and was gone. A leader was used on the next Hudd Gill that I used in there.

Earlier this year I "lost" a Live Target Bluegill crankbait.  Actually what happened was it snagged a very dead, very rotten sunfish and I didn't want to deal with it.

I often leave lures I've tried and not liked at that spot for other fishermen, so I went ahead and set it by the base of a tree.  I even retrieved the box it came in and set it beside the lure.  I hope someone was happy.

I did snag a Live Target frog on a dead tree surrounded by mat.  I'd bent the hooks out a bit to help hook up, and they snagged a branch.  I still see it when I fish there; one day I guess I'll take the boat out and get it back.

Lesson learned lol ;)

Back to back duo spybaits. There were barge cables in the area that I didn't notice and they messed up the 6lb line I was using pretty quick.I had bought 4 of the spybaits but after the second disappeared into the sunset I decided that the other 2 looked really good sitting in the tackle box and I haven't thrown one since.

I'v only lost soft plastics to the bottom so far, but my wife has a bad habit of losing her favorite crappie lure, a strike king bitsy minnow, replaced it 6 times, so that makes it a total of about $18 on that lure so far.

fishing user avatarMr. Bassin II reply :

Snagged a Strike King 6XD last summer so I get my trusty telescopic lure retriever just like many times before.  Working it on the lure in about 12 feet of water but lure won't come loose which prompts me to work it harder.  While doing this, for some reason I loosen my grip and the pole files into the water like a spear.  Forty dollar lure retriever goes to the bottom to never be seen again.

This is most expensive fishing item I have ever lost and to this day I still trying to figure out what I was thinking.
