Best frogs 2024

fishing user avatarBear141 reply :

I'm going to try more top water this year. What's the best frog bps, kvd, terminator,or boo yah? And also what's your favorite color?

fishing user avatareyedabassman reply :

I like the Phat Frog from Snag Proof but that is just me..Alot of of good frogs out there. But I am happy with the Phat Frog for me!

fishing user avatarBear141 reply :

Thanks bass man

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

I don't know what the best one is. But out of the ones I have owned, and used.............SK KVD, Spro, Booyah, Snag Proof Bobby's perfect frog, and probably a few more I can't remember, the Booyah is my favorite.

#1 It's the best bang for the buck

#2 It walks easy and skips under cover super well

#3 It has the "softest body" of any of the other frogs I have used, hook ups are a non-issue with this frog.

I carry 4 colors with me

Bullfrog

Cricket Frog

Shad Frog

Dart Frog

They cover my needs well.

fishing user avatarMaster Bait'r reply :

Pad crashers and Kopper's Live Target are probably my favorite entry level frogs.

I find spros to have fewer hookups despite great action and fit/finishes.

fishing user avatarrobster80 reply :

i like spro and phat frog. want to try the poppin phatty this season.  i did pick up one of the terminator walking frogs yesterday ive heard good things about them

fishing user avatarBig C reply :

My personal favorite is the R2S Poison Spitin' Wa, with a Lake Fork Frog trailer hook.

But, just starting out I have to suggest the BPS "Kermy Kit"  it's a little over $25 for 6 frogs.  I have literally caught more fish on the Black and Yellow BPS frog than any other lure I own.  They are surprisingly awesome.

fishing user avatarTyF reply :

one of the only lures I am truly passionate about and wont buy anything else is the koppers live target frog. At first I thought they were pricey and didn't buy them until they went on sale. I used that same frog for 2 years and caught hundreds of bass, 3 snakehead, and a snapping turtle on it and it still caught fish. after all that abuse it would still float every cast and I would rarely have to push water out.i finally had to retire it as I tore the plastic one day. I have tried strike kings and right out of the box it would start to sink every other cast. The spro frog had a hard body and I missed 6-7 blowups that I know I would have had with the live target before I switched back. that being said my second choice would be the booyah a good frog for a cheap price. My advice would be to put a little extra money into 1 or 2 live target frogs and use them for a few years. I promise you wont be disappointed.

fishing user avatarFishin Ethan reply :

Hard Body Frogs tend to be expansive at Cabela's, Dicks. BPS. They can range from the 5-11 dollar range and are a bit over priced. I would recommed looking in the sale bins at these stores because they often have 1-3 $ frogs that work just fine. For the best frog I have used is the Horney Toad (white color). It is a soft frog and I find it very effective. I would try soft plastic frog and you should find them cheaper and effective.

fishing user avatariabass8 reply :

Snag Proof, Live Target and Booyah are the only ones I use. I really like the poppin' pad crasher. I can't really get a full season out of 1 Pad Crasher frog but they are the best bang for the buck frog out there. Paying retail, I'd just get some pad crashers and call it a day. Dicks ran sales on LiveTargets for 4-5$ a piece. I'd opt for those at that price over anything. The phatfrog from Snag Proof is a great one as well. I carry 3 colors: White, Black/Brown, Green/Bullfrog.

fishing user avatarJaderose reply :

I fish Booyah, Live Target and one that doesn't get much love...Scumfrog Trophy Series.  I can't begin to guess how many hawgs I've hauled through the muck with a natural black and Green Scumfrog trophy series tied on.  They have one now with a rattle that will be in my box this summer.  I usually go through 3-4 of these a year because they get pretty torn up after awhile..

This biggest reasons I like Scumfrog so much?  2 of them...1.)  The sound.  The "Plawp" they make when the hit the water is unlike any other and Is when they get hit the most,  2.) They royally p*ss off OTHER frogs.  It can actually be kind of annoying.  Big bullfrogs will always chase a Scumfrog.  the others ..not so much

fishing user avatarMIbassangler30 reply :

Flat calm I like a normal frog. Favorites include a Jackall Iobee and Kopper's Live Target. I also purchased a few of the Hollow Body Sunfish and I have high hopes for them and look very forward to catching a lunker on that this year. When there's a little ripple on the water or the vegiation is more sparse I like a popping frog. I throw this a majority of the time. Favorites include a Spro Bronzeye and Snag Proof Ish's Poppin' Fatty. If I had to choose one color to throw all the time it would be black, but I have many colors because I like buying, collecting, and experimenting. I like to keep it simple; black, white, green. Low light conditions, but not exclusively - black. Keep in mind, low light can also be sunny days where I'm throwing a frog along the bank where there are shaded overhangs. Blue bird sky's with clear water - white. Days that are in between or just for the heck of it - green/bluegill/brown/yellow. Hands down my favorite way to fish and the technique I am most passionate about. The only technique specific setup I own is for froggin. Just get a few and start fishing them in productive areas. It's more important that you use them in the right areas and present them in the right way, which for me is a walking the dog or twitch/pause.

fishing user avataralzun664 reply :

Of those you listed I'm a big fan of the booyah. It's a very soft frog and that means a higher hookup ratio. It doesn't take on water and is a very good buy for the price. I keep it simple with colors, but I like black.

fishing user avatarthe reel ess reply :

My first frog of the skirt legs type was the SPRO and I got so tired of not hooking up, I put it away. I still have it, but I prefer the Booyah Pad Crasher. Just trim the legs about an inch and start catching them right away.

The Lunker Hunt with realistic legs got bites, but no hookups before it was chronically waterlogged. I'll give it another shot and I have a smaller one yet to try as well.

I have the old Original Snag Proof with realistic legs that I caught my biggest bass to date on that still catches them. I use it on spinning gear because it's so light but they make a casting model now.

fishing user avatarprimetime reply :

I have an addiction and enjoy buying every frog and trying it out....As stated above, it is hard to beat the Booyah Pad crusher if you consider the Price, Size Options, Popping and standard, and they will work just fine no matter where you fish...In heavy cover I like a harder frog, also one that has a narrow nose and casts far, so I like the Spro and the Swamp Donkey for those situations, but almost all frogs are good once you learn how to fish them..I feel the Poppin Phattie from Snag Proof is the best poppin frog for heavy cover, it is the only one I have used that will work in cover and not get jammed up...Scum Frog also makes a chugger that I really like for the sound it makes, and their Trophy Series is a steal at under $6.

I used to always complain about hook up ratio with hollow frogs until my friend made a really good point....How many strikes do you convert on a topwater with treble hooks? It is probably similar since fish will miss a walking bait in open water as well, if they want the frog they will take it down and I have messed around in ponds and I removed the hooks and you would be surprised how long they hold them..I think of them now as a soft bait, if your frog goes under, chances are that fish will move with it for at least 5 seconds if not more. I wouldn't wait that long of course, but my new favorite frog only has one hook and I think that is better since you don't have to slam home 2 Barbs on 2 thick hooks that are actually working against each other unless you bend them perfectly parrallel.

Evergreen makes a frog called the Big Bite Frog that has one hook right in the middle and has ridges on the bottom to make noise on the mat. It is not like the Pivot Frog, it is fixed in one place over a silicone body, and has a super short skirt with only a few strands so it will not block the hook point. Since the weight is connected to the hook, it never takes on water. I rarely miss fish on that frog. It also has a spot for a blade underneath, which makes it a good wake bait with a nice wobble. You can find them for a good price if you shop around, They are expensive due to the quality of material they use. The hook is also super sharp and will not bend no matter how hard you try...Not sure why it is not more popular but I first found out about it when a Pro had it on his rod at Toho...

These things are the bomb!!! Also fish the Poppin Phat Frog as well.  Both walk easy, almost impossible to sink, and get bit.  Also if needed I throw the Snag Proof Bobby's Frog, it's a little smaller but same design concept.  Only other frog  I have a bunch of is the Spro Bronzeye Shad.  Just a differnt look and I like the baitfish colors.  And if needed, I also carry a couple (although hard to find now) Deps Slither Frog. The most expensive frog I have at almost $20 a pop, but the hookup ratio on that frog is about 90% and they crush it.

fishing user avatarZmcc6 reply :

I have spros, snag proofs, the new live target hollow sunfish(have not been able to use yet), and booyah pad crasher.

I believe the booyah pad crasher is the best because its cheap, and extremely soft compared the others i have. If you're first getting started with frog fishing get  a heavy action rod, fast gear ratio, 65lb braid, a white frog, and a black frog. those two colors pretty much cover everything

fishing user avatarToeshots reply :

Another vote for the Booyah Pad Crasher. It's just such a good value.

They are very soft, however I recently picked up one of the new colors - Night Train - and it's noticeable more firm than the others I have, including the Kuro Frog color I bought at the same time. I haven't fished the Night Train yet, but I'm hoping the firmness doesn't have too much effect on hookup ratio.

fishing user avatarWI_Angler1989 reply :

Sadly I haven't tried a few of the mainstays people have been mentioning. I do use and love the livetarget frog. It's durable, castable, has a good hookup ratio, and they look amazing. The fish don't care probably but I thinks it's cool.

Another sleeper pick I have used for years is Scum frog. They're cheap and work really well. They aren't the most durable but their soft body makes for an awesome hookup ratio.

fishing user avatarbigbassin' reply :

I personally like the booyah poppin pad crasher. Walks easy, can be fished like a popper, or you can combine the two.

fishing user avatarWI_Angler1989 reply :

My favorite part about the Scum Frogs is that when a pike huts it and shreds it, I only paid 2.50 so it doesn't break the bank.

fishing user avatarWI_Angler1989 reply :

Speaking of frogs, don't you just hate when you're going through tackle in the winter and can't find a few things. Namely a Livetarget frog. Dang. Apparently I lost a perfectly good, 2 year old frog. Cue the violins.

fishing user avatarHookem Hank reply :

I primarily use Live Target of various sizes and colors. I do have other frogs but these are what I have the most confidence in. They will take a beating and keep catching fish. I love them and always recommend when I get a chance.

fishing user avatarN Florida Mike reply :

I primarily use zoom z- hogs. They bite them best in summer.I get the most bites on them and the average size fish is usually2-3 pounds. The fish usually stay hooked well also.Gambler cane toads and zoom horny toads also, but the fish are harder to hook with them.

fishing user avatarrobster80 reply :

i swear the only time i lose frogs is right after i buy them and want to use them, so i go fishing with it and watch it fly off my line when i backlash it and the knot slips

Of the ones you listed I would go with the booyah pad crashed, a frog that rivals anything else at a good price. I especially like how soft they are, I rarely miss a fish. Good luck!

Booyah vs Livetarget. Which do you pick? I've used livetarget and never had durability issues like some but the booyah is always well reccomended.

fishing user avatarTyF reply :

Live target all the way. In my opinion the extra money is justified for the exceptional quality and durability of the live targets compared to the booyahs.Yes booyah is cheaper for a good frog but in the long run you will have to buy 2-3 booyah frogs before you have to buy a second live target. In the end you wont really be saving money by buying the cheaper frog.

fishing user avatarLunker Addict reply :

I prefer Booyah or Spro. I use my Spro poppin frog the most though.

fishing user avatarHeron reply :

Pad Crasher & bronzeye shad

fishing user avatarBooyahMan reply :

The Pad Crasher is amazing, especially for the price. I've never really had a problem with the durability...only one of them cracked at the nose and is starting to take on water but it is still fishable and fixable. I've had good experiences with Live Target too but I trust the softness of the Booyah bodies to collapse when I need it to.

I had a good guess of what you would vote for from your name haha. Glad to hear it though, they're definitely price friendly. I'm planning to grab one when I see one around here. Softness=hookups right?

fishing user avatarMolay1292 reply :

I like the Jackall Iobee frog, walks fantastic, no need to modify anything out of the box, just tie it on and go to work.

fishing user avatarstkbassn reply :

Moreau 3 inch frog. It's a hard bait and it walks easily. A lot of you must live in areas with pads and slop but not much of that here in VA where I fish.  I like docks, open water, rip rap, and wood....Awesome bait!

fishing user avatargimruis reply :

The spro frog is nice with quality gamagatsu hooks but it has a steep price tag.  The pad crasher is a pretty good bang for your buck.  Bass Pro also offers a knock off called the Kermy Frog I believe that works well.

fishing user avatarwisconsin heat reply :

Booyah pad crasher and Spro popper. I don't care for the spro original. Haven't tried the Koppers, but yall are making me want to.

I liked it a lot before I lost it. Had it for 2 years and caught a lot on it: largemouth, smallies, pike, a northern snakehead and a painter turtle (I wasn't hoomed, just determined to eat the rubber body). Imma need to get more.....

fishing user avatarTHE_Vue's reply :

Swamp Donkey

fishing user avatarMosster47 reply :

I have about every type of frog out there from hollow body to plastic to Elaztech. The biggest fish I caught on one last year was one of those cheapo popper ones from Wal-Mart.

I don't frog fish open water very much, so if you're throwing them into the trash primarily like most of us do it won't make any difference what you get. It's just a disturbance up above that resembles something they can eat.

fishing user avatarWIGuide reply :

My personal preference is the Booyah Pad Crashers and Poppin' Pad Crashers. They do everything the pricier ones do and I don't feel like I got kicked in the balls when a northern shreds one beyond repair or just takes it completely. They're soft enough you'll have a good hookup percentage, they walk well and they come in enough colors to keep everyone happy. My second pick would be the Spro Bronzeye Frog and Shad. 3rd in my book are the Live Target frogs. they are decent and have a very realistic body. The only real drawback for me is the price. I have a hard time paying twice what I do for something that gets the job done just as well.

fishing user avatarMike L reply :

The absolute best frog I've ever used is the Capt Ken's Clone Frog. The kicking action of the legs, combined with the colors, hooks and durability make this stand out above the rest IMHO. They're not cheap by any means tho.

As an all around quality frog I use the little ol Scum.

I have some Scum Frogs that I've had for years. Got them in 2011 probably. Somewhere around there.

I saw some in person at Gander Mountain the other day and they look a lot higher quality! I've always liked them for what they are: solid producer, bang for the buck, not long lasting. But these looked like they had changes to increase longevity. All the holes (nose hole for line tie, where the hooks protrude) are much tighter and have more material, the body is a tad thicker too.

The Evergreen Frog I was talking about is actually the Kicker Frog, the Big Bite frog is also great, but that frog has 2 hooks and is really the same frog only with 2 hooks like most.

The Kicker Frog with the one hook, is almost part mouse, part frog, but the ridges on the bottom seem to give off a sound on a mat that is different than rattles and fish seem to commit to it better than my other frogs, and I find that I hook up most of the time unless I make a mistake which is easy to do since the best strikes always seem to come when you are letting your frog sit still while scanning your surroundings looking for a new cast...

Here is a picture, the material is Silicone I believe, but it has a different feel than any other frog I have handled, and I have tried just about every frog out there even hollow body frogs designed to sink like the Viva Mazzy Frog which will get you thinking about using a Frog in a million different ways. I would not pay for the Viva Frog again since it was demolished quickly & you can just let your frogs fill up with water and fish them like a sub walk, or walk on the mat and then after the hole opens let it slowly sink...You will be surprised...Here is a link to the picture of the Kicker Frog from Evergreen, I am a believer in the one hook being easier to set, which makes sense from a physics perspective....I just don't think Sebile did it right but then again, I have not given it a fair chance and never see reviews on it...I found a deal on these frogs and picked up a bunch, it is almost like a scum frog but with an even better design and more durable yet softer, more features...and I am not a big money guy when it comes to lures...I usually fish standard priced tackle but this frog is my absolute favorite and if you love throwing frogs, I would suggest trying it because it is killer....

Scum frog has an entire line of frogs that almost never get talked about and I don't know why as they are all top quality baits at a great price...The Trophy series has a walking frog, chugging frog that sits nose up, a Deep Chugging/popper style frog that makes a sound unlike any other poppin frog, and now they have the new Rattling frog..I still use the original Mouse and scum Frogs, the tiny frog, the one that comes with a trailer hook, and the trophy series frogs are like $4.99, just as soft as always, have a split ring, brass weight, huge hole on the bottom yet never fill with water??? and all have owner 4/0 hooks that are snug and good to go out of the box...yet on TW some have never been reviewed?? I wish more people would buy Scum Frogs since they are an American Company and if anyone visits their webpage, you can see they have a lineup that rivals any other company. The simple scum Frog will work as good as any frog and if you want a heavier frog, you can get one for only a few dollars more...Both Snagproof and Scumfrog make everything in America, and if you have an issue (I have a buddy who complains to companies all the time) Scumfrog will send you free trailer hooks, frogs, and skirts....Great company to deal with..I don't know why more stores do not carry them, people still see them as cheap and they are certainly not cheap anymore....

Very true, the oft forgotten Scum frog was my first frog, way back when I was new to fishing. I had no clue about frog lures and discovered them while looking for a way to fish the lily pads on my family cabins lake.

They have always worked great for me. I even pike fished with them and they lasted their fair share of toothy critters before sinking.

The company will always be a favor of mine. When I was new and lost I emailed them with my lily pad situation and inexperience. They were more than helpful and nice and answered all my questions, sent me articles, links to other companies I could look at and just genuine with me the whole way. Then when I ordered a dozen frogs from them, they sent me 5 extra frogs and a bunch of stickers and a shirt along with a handwritten thank you and good luck letter.

Thanks Prime.

As I've said here many times before the Scum is one of the most under rated, little talked about frogs on here. The more popular and marketed frogs get the most play and some rightfully deserve it. I've used most "named brands" over the years but none beats the Scum in thier price range. You don't have to pull the hooks, trim the legs to make it walk better and nothing is softer.

I have messed around with adding a blade as I was told it works well if you wake it slowly over grass and when I tried it the lure kind of had a jitterbug kind of action, and I didn't think I had the right sized blade or type. I know they sell the blades, but the package is like $10 for the kit, and if I am going to be fishing in open water, Personally I would use a lure with treble hooks as much as possible.

My buddy loves to fish that Optimum Furbit frog with rabbit hair which also has a blade...he says he catches fish on it with the blade, but also said it gets filled with pond weed/moss and fouls up the action.

I would love to hear any reviews of how the blade works and what size and ring to use, swivel to get the best action. I love adding flash to soft baits and lures when possible...Ever since I watched Timmy Horton Demo the MJ rig on the senko, I have been putting blades on worms, hooks under swimbaits, and on rattle traps removing the rear treble and putting a blade and testing them out..I guess for frogs I just think it may interfere with a good cast at a bad time if you make that perfect skip, then all of a sudden it starts rolling etc...Any advice appreciated...

The Lunker Hunt with realistic legs got bites, but no hookups before it was chronically waterlogged. I'll give it another shot and I have a smaller one yet to try as well.

Keep at it.  They work.

They sure do work...and if the legs come off..Just put in a skirt and you have a nice frog...or glue in some floating worm pieces for legs...want Rabbit fur for legs like the Furbit? Then get some strips and put them in your favorite frog...Rabbit fur really seems to work well at times, and every brand has its flaws, but you can fix anything to make them salvageable....I am guilty for just liking to buy frogs and use different brands, but they all work, some are just different looks.

My vote is for the River2Sea Bully Wa 2. I tried it late last summer on recommendations of some here and I consider it the best I've used.

It is good to see someone else who just rolls with it.  When the legs die it just becomes a Live Target on 'roids IMO.  I also upsize the hooks on them- they SLAY.  That chug and pause kills it.

Pad Crasher & bronzeye shad

I actually like the bronzeye shad better than any frog

fishing user avatarfrogflogger reply :

I own most of them and in calm water I'm not too picky but if there is wind - from a light breeze to a strong blow I have a furbit tied on - it is pricey and has its problems but from Florida to up north, shallow weedy or deep rocky clear water,  it is absolutely a deadly deadly lure.

Love the kickers and slither k's, but I usually save myself the high drama of recommending a $20 frog on here.  Butts get hurt in a hurry sometimes haha

They told me to superglue the hole in the nose, which I did. But I was catching them on the Pad Crasher by that point. I'll get back to them this year.

I have never been able to find any of the Deps products from the Local Distributor here in Tampa Named Lees global fishing, and even if Mr. Lee gets them in they are gone quickly or I just can't pluck down the $25 for the frog...I have always wanted to find  a deal but Deps is a tough company to find closeouts or overstocks on...I have spent hours looking and have only seen Fakes that look, well....FAKE...

I am hoping Evergreen figures out a better way to distribute tackle because I am told that they are considered Premium as in the top of the top in Japan...One thing I have noticed is that Lucky Craft Japan, Megabass Japan, is not the same as Megabass and LC USA.....

I don't mind paying a premium if a lure works and catches fish...I still buy brand name Senko worms and I hate doing it, but if I am going to slow down to fish a Senko (Which I don't enjoy) then I want the right stuff..I can't understand why more companies are not using one hook?????????  I have let people use one since they argue that two hooks are better,  I let them throw the Kicker and they always end up agreeing that hook sets are much better and you will land 7" Bass which rarely happens on Frogs...

I like the first bully wa frogs especially the 55 size, 45 size, and love a few colors they have...I purchased a few of the New Bully Wa 2's and while they have looked awesome in the water (They walk and glide awesome and the skirts look great) but if scum is on the surface I find it picks up everything, and I don't really like the fact that they land like a tank, I mean I get the bigger belly and why they did it, but do you find the landing sound is an issue, or it picking up weeds? I have not had a chance to throw this frog yet in any areas where they had a chance to get bit as I was just testing my new toys, but they land louder than any other frog and I think it is because of the Density and shape..

Are you not having any issues? I would imagine hook ups are great, and maybe they work better around pads, or open water, or grass?

When I fish frogs, I want them to splash!

They pick up some weeds, but I find it's because of the hooks being bent slightly out (like we do anyway) and not because of any design flaw or larger profile.

Regards,

Josh

I like the Live Target 55t in Green Tan, and also the Bullfrog booyah pad crasher. Black is always a great color through as well, and many guys swear by white.

I hear you about having a large splash being good at times...I used them in a phosphate pit that gets crazy weed growth and moss so in fairness any frog would of had moss getting stuck on them most likely, glad to hear it since I love the Poison Color they make and also the clear & few more that are unique, but the new larger model moved like a much higher priced Frog & had a glide too it I liked....Can't wait for the Frog Season to start, I am clearly addicted to Frog Fishing, It's hard to not throw them and I just like buying them and collecting for some reason....Thanks...I also bend many hooks, but usually push the barbs down on many frogs so i get better penetration on long casts if I can't get them even, it never has cost me fish since I never give them slack anyhow, and if they get it it's game over anyway....

fishing user avatarPigsticker reply :

Any spro or snag proof frog is good, River2sea bully wa and spitting wa are pretty nice, and the transporter baits frog is good too,

The popping spro frog always has gotten me the most bites.

The spro king daddy frog usually gets me bigger fish.

The bobbys perfect buzz frog has delivered the most explosive bites.

fishing user avatarBear141 reply :

Just picked up a lunker hunt frog today. Can't wait to try it.

fishing user avatarbigturtle reply :

I have tried quite a few frogs including:

  • Booyah (normal and popping)
  • Spro (normal, popping, and shad)
  • Deps Basirisky
  • Evergreen Kicker frog
  • Nories F60
  • Snagproof (bass kicker, bobbys perfect, ish's phat non-popping version)
  • Livetarget
  • River2sea (BullyWa and SpittinWa)

Of those, I like the Deps and Evergreen frogs the best, due to their single hook, but use the Booyah the most because of the cheap price.

fishing user avatarbasseditor reply :

I use Paycheck Baits Transporter. I change the hooks to a larger size.

Speaking of frogs, don't you just hate when you're going through tackle in the winter and can't find a few things. Namely a Livetarget frog. Dang. Apparently I lost a perfectly good, 2 year old frog. Cue the violins.

Look on your rods. I do that sometimes to discover I have it tied on.

Black or white are my favorite colors.

I like any frog with a super collapsible body.. The hooks have to pop. The rest is up to you.

fishing user avatarJar11591 reply :

After trying several different frogs including R2S Spittin' Wa, Spro Bronzeye, LiveTarget Frog and Hollow body Sunfish, I have settled on the Booyah Pad Crasher or Poppin' Pad Crasher. It has the softest and most collapsible body out of any of them.

But I will say, no frog I have tried walks as easy and well as the LiveTarget Hollow-body Sunfish.
