Anyone have some favorite lures or brands that have gone by the wayside?
I'm still catchin' em like they just came out with-
Slug-go
Kalin's Grubs
Mann's
hookset on 3.
It seems to me that when I find a cool lure it's too late and they are being phased out, I usually am slow in the game when to buying the latest and greatest.
Strike King Spence Scout; that bait is the classic squarebill and can't get hung.
Gitzit tube
Yum Crawbug
Berkley Power Bait Beasts ~

Haven't been fishing long enough. lol
Even though they're fairly popular you never hear about a pro who just won the latest tourny on one, the Zoom Baby Brush Hog. They've been on the market for a long time but they just keep catching bass.
An 8" black jelly worm still tricks a lot of fish for me.

Probably the best "glide" bait, they were so wide with a light weighted hook you could just glide them over and through grass beds and they would get smacked, was a little upset when they discontinued them, because I discovered them right before they got discontinued.

X2 - Sometimes as a jig trailer - that glide is just magic. I've been looking for a bait with similar action but have yet to find one as good.
When rigged weightless & "backward" they glide away from you and right Under / Into cover - great for fishing docks . . .

Lazy Ike
I remember a lure that was made by I think powerbait that was half a crankbait and the back was a scented mid body to tail, almost like the earliest version soft body swimbait.
I TORE UP smallies and trout. I found it in a little backwoods store. I never was able to replace it.
I'll second the original slug-go. Another one that was very productive for me, and definitely no longer made is Galidas Grubs. The smoke color was a killer on smallies in the St Lawrence and Black Rivers.
Still easy to find, but I still get alot of production off of the ol' Jitterbug in black.
Its a lure that has been lost in the shuffle for a long time with alot of the new topwater designs and with the impact that hollowbody frogs.
I cant put my finger on it exactly, buy theres alot of times that the bronze eye or LiveTarget cant get it done, then ill put on the jitterbug (on my frog rod) and start getting vicious bites.
Only draw back is that cant fish it in the mats and slop. But i still prefer it when the grass is low enough that it wont get hung. Or open water situations.
zara spooks .I used to fish them all the time but put them aside for sammys and bonnies.back to using more spooks and loving them.another thing I went back to using all the time is copoly line.I'm glad to hear that the beast is a good bait I bought a bunch when wholesale sports had them on sale for .50 a bag.I have never used them but liked how they looked and for the price I got 10 packs in various colors.

LOL. was gonna do the same
Weedless Witch. It was the original stick bait.
Have you guys ever heard of the Arbogast Mud Bug metal crawfish lures?
Here is what they look like: http://www.ebay.com/itm/390530340261
This is the company that brought you the Hula Popper.
Here is a link to a copy of their 2005 product line: http://www.arbogastlures.com/Catalog.htm
Another site about their baits is interesting: http://www.tacklecollecting.com/arbogast.htm
The metal crawfish baits are still around if you can find them.
Back in the early 90s the metal crawfish baits were used by the pros, including Denny Brauer.
With the introduction of plastic baits and color selections the metal crawfish baits fell out of popularity.
If they worked in the late 80s and early 90s then they should work today.
I am planning on giving them a try this summer.
I still use Crazy Crawlers whenever I get the opportunity to fish farm ponds and have never stopped using Sluggo's.

That sounds like the yum dancing eel.....I think lol
You laugh about that Yum Dancing Eel, but I have one that catches bass like crazy. I bought a couple more and they never have produced like that first one.
In another post, we talked about certain cranks are "special", well this is one of em. I can throw a few different cranks across a point or wherever and no bumps, put that special Dancing Eel on and catch 'em.
Certain colors of Bandit Crankbaits. As soon as I catch fish on a color, they discontinue it.
Zoom Speed Doctor worms with the split buzzing paddletail.
Mr. Twister Foxee Jig.
Some of the Berkley Frenzy cranks with the soft rear section are available on FFO...
Mudbugs...I got a few, but I'm loath to use them that much anymore.
Yes, these are great baits:
Gitzit 3 1/2" Original tubes
Lunker City Slug-Go Try the 3" on a dropshot rig!
Arbogast Mudbug I'm guessing that Arbogast discontinued this productive bait because it was no longer glitzy enough in today's market. That's a shame because the bass still smash 'em. Sorry, no, I don't have any extras for sale.
It's funny to hear so many anglers list the Mudbug ~
Back in the day, when I was first figuring out that there was another "lure" that would catch fish - besides a "Dardevil", the Mudbug was that bait for me -
A crawdad colored (sort of red / black blotches) was The bait of choice - but man were those hooks bad or what ?
I still have it but never fish it.

Sping Craw with Gold Flake.... OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHH that was a killer! I wish they'd bring it back.

Yea, what? FFO?
For me, its the Bomber Balsa B crankbait. It didnt last too long. It is was a larger profile Balsa squarebill with a thick lexan lip. It had a shallow dive angle and wide wobble, and was THE TOUGHEST squarebill to snag, PERIOD. I went nuts last winter and bought about 20 of them.
Also, about ten years ago, FLW had a series of lures exclusively through Wal Mart (right around the time they first linked up). They had an 8" Curl Tail worm that is still the most productive soft plastic bait I've ever used. It had a garlic scent to it (when that first became the big thing). They were so good, I'd wish I find some on ebay...
Sluggos are still pretty popular for striper fishing. Zara spook fell off the radar? I like those too...just got some super spook jrs the other day. Maybe they were half price because they aren't as popular as they once were. Who knows.
Sorry, FFO is Fisherman's Factory Outlet.
Kalins Mogombo Worms....big gals love a big THICK worm.
The old version Excalibur had an Advantage series of baits which had clear sides with a holographic insert in them. I have done very well on the Guppy size in a shad color which had a dark back with a white belly. This is still a go to bait when the fishing is tough.
I used to kill them on a Powerbait ribworm fished behind a mojo rig.
The jury is still out for me but so far I prefer the old version of the Matt lures hard bluegill over the newer version in terms of the way it swims. The newer one is a big improvement in terms of durability. I've only used the newer version one summer so far which may not be a large enough sample size but it seemed like I caught more with the older version.
Not so much a lure, but a color. I use to have a big-o that was silver and had chrome glitter on it. I use to catch a ton of fish on that thing.

Galigas Grubs are being made again by Venom.

I used to fish with Mann's augertail all the time.......... I still have several packages and rarely put them In the tackle bag for a trip.
They used to absolutely kill the bass.
Berkley 4" finesse worms
jersey rigg
nanother siteke,
Regarding "... zara spooks ... back to using more spooks and loving them ..." - what color(s)?
While there are many discontinued lures and colors we all love, to stay on surprise it didn't catch on more.....
The Berkley half rattle trap/ half soft plastic tail. I have one with a bunch of replacement tails and I have caught Bass galore and the occasional catfish on it. I remember berkley made a whole line.... a walker, a crank, the lipless, and maybe a few others. I really thought they were onto something, especially the lip less. Here is a pick of it
I would readily agree with the mudbug and spence scout (I love the scout and was way ahead of the square bill curve) but, and correct if I am wrong, were very popular back in the day and has simply fallen off and been discontinued. I really wish the scout was still around, but that would be added to a long list of old time favorites that are no longer on the shelf. BTW I love talking older lures with the "older" guys on here..... love it.
There also seemed to be a time when I was younger that the sluggo came up in every fishing conversation.... seems it got a lot of love. The senko has stolen it's thunder, but still seems to have a presence.
Back in the 80's, Cotton Cordell Made a redfin that was bright orange/red. I mean BRIGHT. I smoked more stripers and LM on that bait. Not sure why but it just worked. I called CC and asked them about it. They said "Yeah, we sold a bunch of those. But, we just discontinue some colors from time to time." Huh? A bunch? So how much sense does it make to discontinue a big selling product? Would love to get my hands on another one of those.
Find the custom color and have someone paint it for you, thats easy enough.
Yeah, I plan on that. It was not until I joined BR that I though about doing that. It's the EXACT color that I am not sure of.

Thay also had a Craw-Worm similar to a Gene Larew Salt Craw that was awesome!
That's the package!!! Oh man, I miss those worms. I'd buy all of them if I found any.
Strike King Pork-O, Was the best weedless bait for working through the pads.Kalins Western Weenie Worms, the original salty finesse worm. Slider worms, still can hammer them some days on these.
Ever since i was a kid,and still today theres a combo that i will always have. Uncle Josh tiny craw pork trailers. There was 4 or 5 per bottle. Anyone thats got them, and will part with them let me know.PLEASE.

Whit, go to Mann's website. They still carry Augertails in the original colors.
Goodluck, hookset
it's funny, we yearn for those baits we used to crush the fish on, and it is probably our fault they are gone. We kept it too secret, lol. Sales went down and now they are gone
The old Berkley Power Craws are another.
How 'bout Smithwick Devil's Horse?
Cotton Cordell Baby Wiggle'O
No other crankbait has produced for me like this one has. I am always asking ppl if they have one and if they want to sell it. It is my favorite bait to search ebay for...i usually don't find them however.
The search continues. I cannot determine why they stopped making them.
No one mentions 7" ribbon tail worms anymore. Now it's all about creatures.
On 1/30/2013 at 11:17 PM, J Francho said:No one mentions 7" ribbon tail worms anymore. Now it's all about creatures.
J, got your back on that one! Culprit or Power worms were the joint, but got kind of kicked to the curb.
I forgot all about my Culprits when Powerworms came out.
Here on lake gaston when the hydrilla starts growing, a 7" zoom or power worm can be leathal. I will agree with Francho that ribbontails fell back a little with all the new creatures coming out.
They're much better when searching moderate grass beds. Creatures pick up weeds and debris, while worms slide through the grass. A creature makes a much better drop bait, when working pockets, though "swinging a worm" through a pocket may also be the ticket.
I still like Jitterbugs, and Hula poppers.
I miss the opaque painted crankbaits that had gold or silver foil in the body, man I wish I could find some. I had a red bomber with gold foil that was a fish catching machine.

I hope they are still popular..... seems a lot of guys still throw em, but your right in the sense it seems if you say top water everyone says sammy or rico..... but the horse is still awesome at bringing up some good fish.
Do not remember the name, or the brand, but I used to buy these ribbon tail worms from SUper K-Mart when I was a kid. They were Strawberry and Raspberry flavored, and colored. I used to catch bass on the Purple ones like CRAZY.
All I remember is the smell, smelled just like fruit lol.
edit:
Found them! It was Manns Jelly Worm, they were not ribbon tailed but a sort of paddle tail. Man these things used to kill them! Might have to get a nostalgia pack

Paul Elias used them down on Falcon to catch that record tournament weight a few years back - I am a big fan of those worms myself.

I remember in the 70's when my Plano tackle box (not bag), used to smell good when I opened it.
Now, whew, I've got nasty scents like Powerbait sauce, Smelly Jelly, Bang, all kinds of garlic ones.
Don't get me wrong, I use them faithfully, but when it's hot out, my tackle bag (not box) opens up it could gag a maggot.
For me it's the Jitterbug. Used to use it back a few decades ago when I was in high school and then hadn't touched it in years. Decided to throw it last summer. Didn't catch anything on it but it felt good to use an oldie goldie lure again. Probably use it more this summer just to give it a decent tryout.
How about a French fry? Anybody still fish with those? Rember fishing those a lot growing up.

When I was a kid growing up on the rivers this was THE go to at dusk into night on a full moon. You would hear them slapping at it on every cast. We would float the river for hours and just smash the fish. Now that river has had something spilled in it and catching a 12" bass in mid summer is a surprise in some sections. I just changed hooks on two the other day. The hooks were molded into the bait via the hangers. I actually had to cut the hook, add split rings before adding hooks again.
Helin's Flatfish. And even the Heddon River Runt, both of which are still made today. Just don't hear of anyone doing well either.
Was out fished recently by my partner using an original floating Rapala. I'm busy putting new split rings and hooks on mine.
These bait's have fallen off my radar............for no real good reason either, I used to catch TONS of fish on them, but rarely if ever use them anymore.
A 3"-4" single tail grub slow rolled on a ball jig head
A 7.5" texas rigged ribbon tail worm
A Johnson's Silver minnow weedless spoon with a double tail grub trailer, worked over the top of thick grass like a frog/toad
A super shallow running crankbait like a subwart or Mann's baby 1-
And floating stick/jerkbaits like an original Rapala.
In fact, add a 3/8 oz black/blue jig, a green or brown 4" finesse worm, and a 3/8 oz chart/white colorado/willow tandem spinner bait (all of which I do still use often) to that list, and that WAS my arsenal for about 20 years.

A black 1/2ounce Jitterbug at dusk on a shallow sandy flat is one of my favourites.

I still fish them, great bait that can be rigged a large number of ways.
It's getting harder to find the Strike King Rage Tail Shad, topwater plastic. They are a deadly alternative to a buzzbait/frog and are impossible to hang up in the mats when rigged weedless.

I haven't had a problem finding the Shads. Man, if I couldn't fish the Shad, I'd have a heart attack!
I'll go with the Lazy Ike, the Jelly worm and the Jitter bug. Another flat fish that was never very popular [no longer made] has always been a killer for me:
the Flap Jack by Shakespear.
