Man seems like everyone here loves Senkos ;D ;D
Personally i rarely throw them think i got 2 packs somewhere i use on a c-rig occasionally catch plenty of fish,, guess im more of a jig guy..just seems like you cant read a topic here without senko coming up.. Not hating just seems like this is Senko City
Not me. I much prefer the Zoom Trick Worm.
I am not a huge fan of the Senko. I don't hate it, I just enjoy fishing other soft plastics more. I will throw it on occasion, especially when the fish are shallow.
I think they are so popular on this board because they are a great bait for a beginner and we have a TON of beginners here at any given time. I wish I knew about the Senko when I first started. I used to fish a few places that was prime Senko water.
They flat catch fish but its definitely not my favorite. In fact dead sticking a senko is probably my least favorite technique. In previous posts I have likened it to watching paint dry. However they have their time and place for sure. I always have senko's with me.
While I fish senkos, they are not my "favorite" bait. Although there are some days when they are.
The thing about senkos is they are a good universal bait. While presentation is important, there seems to be no wrong way to fish them.
They are probably the best bet for a novice to catch fish.
I enjoy fishing with soft plastics, period. That includes Senco's (or knock offs) flukes, creatures ect.I almost always have a Senco tied on one off the 5 or 6 poles in the boat. I have given countless hooks and Senco's to kids that were fishing at the boat launch and not catching diddly until they were shown the Senco's power. Same with adults, have taken lots of people fishing that have only used live bait and shown them how to catch fish on plastics. Not just Sencos but plastics in general. They are great as someone said, for newbies, but I suspect more people use them than they care to admit. Just my thoughts.

I think you'll find that most people here use something else than the actual senko.
Not my favorite bait or my best producer, but they have days when they work very well just like every other bait I have ever used. I try just about every soft bait I can find I think I am addicted to them.
Being a noob... Yes I do
Do I love them? no
Do they produce for me? Yep
My buddy HARDLY tosses one and says his tourny partner calls it "gay fishing"
Probably due to what someone else said, it's kinda boring and like watching paint dry.
I'm starting to get into cranks and spinners now, but always have a Craw ore Senko tied up
Yamamoto for muah
BTW Yamamoto products are on sale at dicks sporting goods till Sat night for 4.99 per pack
good buy seeing they are a bit pricey at 6.49 reg
just a FYI bros
The GYCB Senko revolutionized bass fishing for many people,
including me! The introduction of the Senko was magical, much
like the original Lucky 13, Jitterbug, Rat-L-Trap, Creme Worm,
Gitzit and Floating Rapala.
I suspect the Senko has contributed to more tournament wins
than any other bait over the past fifteen years. This would be
especially true at the amateur level.
I don't care for that style of fishing but on the rare occasion that I use them success is almost guaranteed, sizable fish as well.
They're quite possibly my least favorite soft plastic, and I haven't thrown one in well over a year.
I love fishing them a long with any other weightless plastic, but I prefer plastic fishing to crank/spinnerbait fishing personally.
Senko, Stick-O, Wave, Zero, etc.
Are all AWESOME soft plastic lures and can be worked and rigged just about anyway. If you don't have them you are missing out! Caught my biggest bass on one and will continue to use them for producing numbers or quality. My go to lure is the one that is producing, so its not always the case, but to answer your question, I am a Senko or Senko imitator fan!!
I use them a lot, but I wouldn't say I love them. Personally, I wacky rig them more than anything, I rarely T-rig them anymore (I'd rather throw a rage craw or El Grande bluegill tube if I'm T-rigging). You cannot beat the wiggle of a stickbait as it's falling weightless though.

I agree. I have caught some of my biggest fish on wacky rigged Senko/knock-offs. It is not my favorite technique, but I almost always have one ready to go. I add weight according to depth, and have caught fish from very shallow to very deep (15-20'). They are effective anywhere in the water column. What's not to like?
'Senko' is an over-used word. I think that a lot of people use it when they are indeed talking about a similar product such as the Yum Dinger (which is more durable, cheaper and basically the same thing). I myself am guilty of this from time to time.
I use senkos and similar products often, because let's face it... they catch fish. In just about every type of water and almost every condition mother earth can throw at us. They are just a solid bait, and a versatile one at that.
That being said I don't understand why people hate them, and I am not saying those people are wrong at all. It's all a matter of fishing with something that you have confidence in, and enjoy fishing with. I have baits that I don't like too. But something that catches fish everywhere that I fish it would be irrational the not throw it.. right?
imo , they are a great bait. i use *** trick sticks and sometimes the kinami stick baits when they are in the clearance bins.
while its not my favorite way to fish , i do fish them alot. they simply catch fish. less than a year ago , i couldnt get anything to bite one. now it seems thats the only bait that works, so i use it.

Nate,
Where are you in PA?
Bobby has just introduced a new "Senko" with nearly identical
characteristics, PLUS MegaStrike attractant built in!

Roadwarrior,
Does this mean that you've been converted from the gycb senko over to Bobby's version?
Senko ---> bait for people who don 't know how to fish and want to catch fish
I have literally hundreds of them, hardly ever use them, no wonder why a pack lasts me years.
I was stuck on them for awhile because lets be serious they flat out catch fish! I still do throw them now but try not to too much and become more comfortable with different techniques.
QuoteRoadwarrior,Does this mean that you've been converted from the gycb senko over to Bobby's version?
I have not tried one yet, they just came out. To be fair,
maybe...but probably not. This, I suspect, will be a high
quality bait and superior to other knock-offs.
I use them alot, but not neccessarily the Senko. I really like the SK Ocho's. Lately, I've been using them after working an area that I've worked with another technique just to make sure. This produced a nice 3 lb'er the other night. I also use them as a follow up bait to a missed strike, particularly with topwater.

Are you saying it is too easy to catch fish on Senkos? Is it somehow cheating for a skilled fisherman to use a Senko? When a jig is working very well do you change baits to make it more difficult to catch fish?
Wanting to catch fish is a fundamental element of fishing. : I completely agree with fishing what you like, and what you're good at. To imply that Senkos are somehow not worthy of a true fisherman is silly in my humble opinion. :-?

Man, you and I are not in the same frequency:
1.- where did I say that it 's cheating for a skilled fisherman to use a senko ?
2.- where did I : "dude this thing is working, change it so it gets more difficult ?"
3.- Where in the friggin world I said that: senkos are not worthy of a true fisherman" ?
Everyone on this board is a bassin' freak. That's all it matters to me.
K_Mac, you might want to read what Raul wrote again. What I got out of it was anybody can catch fish on a Senko. And this has held true for me. It's a do nothing bait. When I have a client who is struggling due to lack of experience, I tie on a Senko and and they see how easy it is to fish, and many times the fish play the game and give it a bite.
I personally don't like to fish them. They bore the crap out of me. I'm not saying that they suck.. They just aren't for me and Raul probably feels the same way.

Raul a lot can be implied to your statement, maybe you can elaborate. :-?
What I got out of Raul's original statement was that Senkos are a bait that don't demand any specific type of skill in order to catch fish with.
The same can't be said of a popper, spook, lipless crankbait, etc. You actually have to work those a certain way.
I threw one for the first time this year t-rigged last week. It produced some fish. I've used them several times this year on a flick shake. There are other soft plastics I'd rather use, but I'll still keep a pack or two in my bag if I run into a situation that I need them. I'll let my kids or my father use them more than I will.

I read it several times before I posted. I readily agree that it is a great bait for a novice. It is also a bait that in the hands of a skilled fisherman can produce both size and numbers.
The problem with online conversations is that meaning and tone can easily be misinterpreted. Raul I have great respect for your input, and meant no disrespect. I apologize for coming across that way.
I like senko's and try them time to time but there not on the top of my list as a favorite bait. It does take talent to use a senko because there are different ways to present it and use it. I like to use a 1/8oz carolina rig and twitch it as it falls. You can just let it fall, let it fall with no weight or paly ot along the bottom. Its all about the presentations and what works at that moment. Sometimes i let it fall and keep the line tight waiting for a nibble. I also like worms and creature baits too not just senko type baits. Fishing freak yes, senko freak no way.
im not a senko freak even though my name might imply it, they are one of my goto baits though because the flat out produce when others cant, when i fish alomst always have a rod with a senko on it, and no i do not 100s of them, i have a few selective brands, sizes, and colors that produce best for me

kinda ironic but heading out for a nightfishing trip.. i got a junebug senko tied on ;) :D
casting and working lures is half the fun of fishing for me.
when the fish arent falling for my other plastics and jigs and its time for a fight, i'll wacky rig one on an extra-fast spinning rod and shake it every few feet as it falls. far from my favorite technique but i dont hate it.
dead-sticking a senko is a little too boring for me.
I used to despise the slow process of Senko fishing, until I started catching fish with them on tough days when nothing else was working.
I'm not a "Senko freak", but it's safe to call me a believer. I'm beginning to believe that color doesn't matter worth a d**n.
no. I prefer either trick worms or a fish stalker worm that looks similar to a trick worm.
-gk
Only those who want to catch bass.
I like fishing weedlines, so weightless T-rigged plastics is a must for me. With that being said, I like Senkos because I can fish them at different speeds depending on whether the strikes are feeding strikes (like when the fish will sometimes pick my senkos off the lake floor a full minute after its been just sitting there) or reaction strikes.
It's also a good bait to gauge the fish IMO, because I can throw the same senko out and Yo-yo it like a lipless crank, jerk it like a fluke, or just let it wiggle and sink every 15 seconds or so. If I get more hits on the wiggle and sink then I know the bass are likely to be slow and lazy but feeding. If I get more strikes when I'm yo-yoing, then I know the fish are fairly active and may or may not be feeding. If they strike it while I'm fishing the senko quickly, I know that the fish are likely to be quite active.
Depending on how the fish are, I will then switch to a more productive bait for the situation. For instance, a popper for active fish, a dropshot for somewhat active feeding fish, and crawling a craw across the lakebed if they are lazy but still feeding.
they collect dust in my boat.... can't just sit there like that. absolutely the most boring technique in the world....
SKREW senkos. Its all about Ochos son 8-)

i like the strike king zeros, gander mountian tricksticks, and yum dingers, i like purplish colors and green pumpkin though i do have some that are bright chartruese one that smallies love
I'll chime in with my 2 cents. I think most fisherman when they think about fishing a Senko are associating it with a weightless Texas or Wacky rig which is no doubt highly effective. That said I've done very well at times fishing the 4" size on a weighted Texas rig or using the 3" size on 1/32 oz. or 1/16 oz. mushroom jighead which has a slow death spiral. The 3", 4" & 5" Senko's are extremely versatile baits and are definetely one of the all time great bass fishing lures. That said my go to baits during the summer are crankbaits with soft plastics being a fall back option for me.
Josh. Give them a chance, you'll love 'em. That day you put us on those fish at the dam last winter, they were wearing them out. It didn't take long for them to pick 'em up. The thing about the Senko I like is that the fish rarely pick one up and spit it out. They refuse to let go of them it seems. Must be all the salt that's in them. I have found them to be a must have back-up bait and can skip one way up under a dock for those tough to get bit times.
Chris
In my local tournament scene there are 2 types of fisherman, those who throw a Senko 100% of the time, and those who don't. I'm not kidding, I know of at least a dozen guys who do nothing and I mean NOTHING else. They don't even know why they do it, they just do it. I have had days where I have out fished a senko slinging partner 10 to 1 with a jig, or a crank, or frog etc.........and they just don't/can't/won't switch to any thing else. Do I use Senkos? Sure, but I know when/where/why I am using them ( at least IMHO which is ..........well you know)
What I'm getting at is..................I don't know really, but guys that use senkos 100% of the time bug me.
I dont always throw soft stick baits, but when i do i prefer zoom trick worms.
I gave them up a few years ago. Senko style baits are slowly limiting an anglers ability to adapt and overcome imo. They are like a bad addiction. ;D

hey Chris.. i do have some and do use them sometimes just not often..we were catching all our fish down there on craw imitations.. the point of this topic was every post you see in this forum section the answer is to use a senko LOL :
If you have been fishing awhile with good success, there are
just so many alternatives that work great and are more fun to
fish. However, some guys are just starting and/or struggling.
The Senko and Fat Ika are almost bullet proof.
There are several hard baits that fit the criteria (little skill
required): Jitterbug, Floating Rapala, Heddon Puppy and
Rat-L-Trap to name a few.
i prefer ocho in 5 inch and 7 inches and yum dinger
they catch more fish than gary yamamoto senkos
Senkos are great baits, as I said, they are excellent for people that don 't know how to fish and still catch fish, my 7 year old son fishes almost exclusively with senkos and even though you can assume that being my son he should know more how to fish, true, he is my son but the knowledge and skill are not genetically inherited so he 's an average Joe ... Jr in this case and like every average Joe, in order to catch fish consistently he still has a long road to walk before he can accomplish that.
In the words of Matstone: Senko style baits are slowly limiting an anglers ability to adapt and overcome.
That 's the only problem I see with stickbaits as the same problem I see with another practically fool proof bait: the in-line spinner, yes they catch fish, the catch is how many, how oftenly ( numbers and consistency ) in the hands of an unexperienced angler, being unexperienced they are not able to determine yet when the bait is really working or when it 's time to change it for something else that can be more productive and efficient. They just stick to it no matter what.
My son, like many unexperienced anglers is in that phase, and he pays the price for sticking stricktly to one type of bait, there are days ( less than often ) when he does a killing with senkos, but like I said, those days are not THAT frequent, most days you really have to work hard for your catches, of course, the kid got his dad and if we go fishing, well, if senkos are not working he just puts aside his rod, grabs his Nintendo DS and plays waiting for his father to catch something so he can reel it in. What his father fishes ? well in those days with anything he can put his hands on and that includes the kitchen sink.
Actually, I have been fishing the Sluggo a lot this year, and have had very good success. I love the wounded minnow action. I was using it at the pond the other evening and after the nose was torn, it ended up automatically being wacky rigged. I still caught 3 more bass on it. It did a very good imitation of a minnow, on it's side, struggling in the water.
The 3" ones have been very productive. Don't think I've caught more that a few this year on a senko.
I hate the darn things, I just can't get "into" them. But best of luck to those of you who enjoy them, they obviously work well otherwise they wouldnt be souch a huge hit.
QuoteI dont always throw soft stick baits, but when i do i prefer zoom trick worms.
LOL
I used whatever stickbait is avaiable in the color I want. I have a ton of senkos but tons of others as well.
Yum Dingers actually been killing lately.
I'm fairly new to the Senko thing (when I say Senko I mean the real McCoys and knock-offs like the Yum Dinger). I first learned about them here. Previously when I fished plastics it was a T or C rigged Manns Jelly worm or Mister Twister.
Now I fish them nearly exclusively for one reason, they catch fish.
I don't get the disdain for them. I mean we are on the water to catch fish, aren't we?
The idea that it takes no skill to fish a Senko is absurd. You still need to find the fish. Tossing a Senko in the shallows won't do a thing if the bass are in deeper water, nor will it work if the bass are holding close to cover and you're tossing one in open water.
They catch fish, often when nothing else is working, that's all I need to know about them.
I only fish a senko around spawn when fish are spread shallow on the shoreline...and it bores me.
No but you have to understand that when people say senko they really are talking about a way of fishing and not just a lure.
Of course there are guys who love senkos but there are plenty of other guys who fish other brands but call it senko fishing.
I don't like the lure personally but I do love fishing worms like a senko
Capt.O
A few people mentioned they found fishing a Senko boring. Just wondering how it is any more boring than say fishing a crankbait or jitterbug. You toss and retrieve. If anything is boring that can be.
Personally I find it hard to be bored by anything when I'm fishing and that goes double if I'm catching fish. I catch more fish with Senkos than anything else.

ooh I gotta get that
If you're not a Senko freak, thanks, you're leaving a lot of fish for me ;D
I personally have lost my patience for senko type baits. With all the setups I bring on my boat I am constantly changing rods. I fish fast until I find them, then slow down. I think this year I have caught one fish on an SK zero. I just don't ever tie one on anymore. The only time I do is in the spring, in the pre spawn and spawn times. I do think they are an excellent bait, especially for sight fishing in gin clear water and flipping buck brush. But it is a boring bait, just too slow for my taste.
I've had good success on them but rarely throw them for some reason. I just prefer other plastics in my area.
thts wat im sayin
Sencos are a bass catching tool. So are spinnerbaits, topwater baits, jigs, and crankbaits. I could go on and on. Sometimes sencos are the best tool to accomplish the task (catch bass). Sometimes other baits in your arsenal will work better. Like vise grips, they are convienent and handy and easy to learn. But sometimes a screwdriver or a hammer works better. I'm not knocking senco type baits, but they arn't always the best option.

Dude, seriously? You revived a two year old thread to post this ^^^ ?
It's my least favorite way to fish. If all else fails though I will toss one before leaving a body of water.
Not my fav, but do put fish in the boat.
Senkos are an awesome bait. Yeah they are easy to fish and sometimes get a stigma for that, but they are something of a sure bet in clear or lightly stained water. I throw them almost every trip, though I fish lots of different baits and plastics.
I don't like fishing them but hard to argue their effectiveness. I do like giving them to people just learning how to fish though since they pretty much do all the work for you, just cast out and reel in the fish.
Yep.
This thread reminded me to pick some more up, thanks
I like it better when bass are striking topwater frogs but I have molds to make senko style plastics from 2 inches to 9 inch monsters and I have 1 tied on year long.
I'd rather watch paint dry than fish a senko.
Nope. I would rather fish jigs.
I always have a wacky rigged Senko on a rod.
I refuse to go home skunked.

I am a Zoom Baby Brush Hog nut. It's almost the only bait I fish other than the Zoom Trick tail worm.
