Best buzzbait? 2024

fishing user avatarMsbassin777 reply :

I need some suggestions on what color buzzbait and what brand to use.

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

48274_is I think they are all pretty much the same . Except the cheap Wal-Mart ones . They are junk ..  Look at how the blades turn and get two lures . One that turns each direction  , that way you will have baits that run left and right . The original Lunker Lure turns opposite of most other baits . On a good buzzbait bite I will have both rigged up . Colors  , my favorite is the old 40 count rubber in yellow or chartreuse. Now comes the  onslaught of black Cavitron suggestions . .

1/4oz black Cavitron with a red blade. If I want it heavier, I'll take a piece of an old Senko and put it on the shank of the hook to add weight. I prefer the smaller profile of the 1/4 Cavitron over the larger 3/8-1/2oz models.

Accent finesse game changer and standard size game changer.  White for clearer water and brighter days, black for muddier water and darker days.

The only thing I do to modify it is to cut slits in the rivit to make it louder, it already comes with a double crimped rivit and a wire keeper for plastic trailers.

Do you throw chartreuse in muddier waters than black?  I haven't ever tried chartreuse before (just black and white) might have to get one.

I will try chartreuse in good stained water (not muddy) at times, but chartreuse (or chartreuse and white) is a surprisingly good color in clear water, especially around vegetation, but under very low light conditions (crack of dawn, etc.). It's also seems to be a good color in moving water (rivers, etc.). As best I've been able to understand, it actually appears brighter to a bass than white, so I think that's the reason (or at least part of it).

The blade rests on a rivet and it squeaks as the blade turns. You can take pliers and smash the rivet down so it doesn’t rotate with the blade and it’ll squeak more.

fishing user avatarFishDewd reply :

I have 3 bizzbaits, 2 are cavitrons. One is black with a red blade, other is white with a silver blade. The other buzz I think is a strikeking but not positive. Its white/chartreuse with a silver blade. The strikeking has the best squeal to it, but the cavitrons can go a little slower. I feel like I need slower ones to be effective though. 2/3 bites ive had this year on a plopper have been on a pause. I can't pause a buzzbait cause it sinks. So next best thing would be something slower. So far the buzzers haven't done anything for me but I throw them nearly every session so maybe one day they will.

We’ve always had good luck with Cavitrons. And I’ve tried a lot of buzzbaits.

My friend had a skirt fall off of a brand new one, got old in the package I guess, and the Cavitron guy, can’t remember his name sent my friend a brand new package of skirts and a brand new Cavitron for free.

Tactical Bassin did a video about buzzbaits. I had one that would lay over on its side. After watching the video I found out the wires were not in line. One was bent off to the side instead of being straight in line with the other one.

fishing user avatarBobby Uhrig reply :

Nah I can take one look at what you're doing and figure it out in 5 sec  . Gotta be something ,it won't sink at proper retrieve speed

But seriously, this is what happens when they aggressively crash the blades or buzzer.  You don't catah any of these fish without a trailer hook.

fishing user avatarNittyGrittyBoy reply :

Possible to fish a soft body with a trailer?

I feel like the marketing tells you if you don't have a soft body trailer your missing out. But same time I fish trailer hooks on almost all my spinnerbaits. Simply because like you, my local Bass are experts at short striking.

I think I might be overthinking it, I've never fished a buzzbait more than 5 casts. So I'm dedicating a rod just to keep one tied on at all times

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Try both.  I really don't believe the short strike thing.  I think their attack is focused on the blades, and not the skirt.  Who knows, maybe I put a plastic bait trailer on, and they go for that, and get hooked without a trailer hook.

fishing user avatarNittyGrittyBoy reply :

I haven't fished with them yet, but my new cavitrons are flat out nice.

You can tell quality soon as you open the package. Hope the Bass like em as much as I do.

fishing user avatarfin reply :

I'm weird too. I Never use trailers on spinnerbaits or buzzbaits. I rarely use buzzbaits. I do use trailers on chatterbaits.

If you use a trailer on a buzzbait, you're going to have keep the retrieve faster to keep it up, and if you try to do a pause, it's going to sink quicker. I prefer a large skirt for a slower sink when pausing. Too large of a skirt on too small of a buzzbait and you're going to have to maintain a fast retrieve to keep it spinning.

With a spinnerbait, I think there's enough going on there already to attract a fish. I agree sometimes they're going after the blades, because I've hooked some in the chin, but I think they're going after the skirt sometimes too. A trailer is just too much unnecessary added weight for me.

As with most things, I don't think there's a wrong or right answer, just preference. I'm sure trailers sometimes help encourage a fish to bite.

fishing user avatarNittyGrittyBoy reply :

I definitely don't want to increase retrieval speed if I don't have too. I knew it would add a little more weight, but figured it would increase bouyancy, no?

I guess that's why that snake oil whopper plopper sells ... <-- tounge in cheek. Relax plopper fans.????

I don't know, really. I guess it depends on the trailer. Not many of them actually float do they? Very slow sinking, but not really floating.

fishing user avatarDSTN reply :

If you use a plastic trailer like a toad the kicking legs tend to help keep the buzzbait riding at the surface even at a slower retrieve, at least in my experience.

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

Last year,  instead of a skirt  I glued   Yum Money Minnows on my D-It molds buzzbait's and loved it . The lure cast further and retrieved slower .It  caught loads of bass  and had a very high hook-up ratio . I   use a trailer hook  most of the time  . I use the stair-step design like on the Cavitron  that allows the lure to set a little deeper in the water . I cant scientifically prove that it helps to get more hook-ups but it sure seems to . Heres a well chewed Money Minnow   buzzbait .

Noticed cavitrons don't have a bait keeper to keep bait from riding down.

I'll just rock the skirt and trailer hook and see how that does.

Mine all either pull to the side or will run on their side, even new out of the package.  What kinds of trailers are you using that corrects this?

fishing user avatarjbrew73 reply :

Z craw or pit boss seem to be best. I have not tried any toads but they seem to be popular as well.

fishing user avatarNittyGrittyBoy reply :

Do the trailers slide down any or do you glue them?

fishing user avatarjbrew73 reply :

They stay up because I pull the skirt and the skirt keeper does pretty well but glue would definitely help.

So a 3/8 cavitron with a zoom horny toad instead of skirt feels kinda heavy.

I hate throwing lures where I feel like I have to lob the lure. Like I don't have complete control

I know some folks on here cut them in half down the middle.

Those Kalins Crappie Scrubs mentioned in that Ali Express thread look kinda like a frog. Look like they'd be light.

fishing user avatarI'm Blue reply :

dont think it makes a huge difference. I do like a trailer with skirt, I'll use a Mister twister split tail grup or the zooms straight trailer. For me its more about casting in the wind. I tend to use 1/4 oz to 5/16th buzz baits, trailer helps em cast.
I use clacker style, 3 bladed strike kings or uncle buck inlines then Johnson weedless spoons with glued on skirts depending on weed thickness and speed. While the spoon isnt a buzz I fish it similar but can really slow it down and work over cover

fishing user avatarNittyGrittyBoy reply :

Tried a toad, made it run sideways. Went back to skirt, caught my first buzzbait Bass.

Two years ago we fished Guntersville with Derek Remitz.  The go-to buzzbait was The Booger Man buzzbait.   If I had known they didn't make them any longer,  I would have bought all they had.

But,  I know a guy.  I guy who now owns the molds and is producing them.  He produces a number of different discontinued baits.

fishing user avatarNittyGrittyBoy reply :

So ever since buying my cavitrons, I'm hooked. I've always been a popper fanboy and propbaits. And I still have one rigged up at all times but...

I have been flat wearing them out with my gold blade, 3/8, chartreuse cavitron. I caught em pond fishing, but they have been shining in my local rivers. Throwing them first light and shady spots middle of the day.

No trailer, just a bulky skirt works good for me, trailer hook when I'm fishing in boat, no trailer when I'm walking Creeks.

Thanks Bass Resource for opening my eyes to a style of fishing I've been missing out on!

I've been a buzzbait junky since I bought my first Lunker Lure forty-something years ago . They can be fished through the same snags a spinnerbait can be thrown in . Spooks , poppers... cant .

fishing user avatarBoomstick reply :

I usually use a 3/8oz white one more often than not (I fish clear water more often than not) but will use chartreuse or white and chartreuse in dirty water and black at night. White/chart can also be effective in clear water in low light conditions -- same as spinnerbaits really.

I've used Booyah, War Eagle and Terminator for brands with no issues with each.

I'll often break out the buzzbait when there is a slight chop and some rain.

I like adding the trailer when throwing into the wind, it allows for more accuracy as the wind does not catch it as much

fishing user avatarHeyCoach reply :

I’ll ask it here instead of starting another buzz bait thread.

What color buzz buzz bait do you use when it is around sunset to dusk? I’m using white and black Booyah buzzbaits.

This last week I tried a black frog and a white buzz bait and neither produced, not even a boil or had one flash.

fishing user avatarKoz reply :

Love the buzzbait! In fact, for the last two weeks I've been throwing it almost exclusively because the bass have been crushing it. I managed to squeeze in an hour of fishing last night and caught 3 including a 3 pounder and one over 5 pounds. No trailer, just a trailer hook.

For me, the Strike King Banshee in Sexy Shad has been the best, although a black and blue Cavitron has done OK for me as well. The Banshee is all bent up and chipped from taking so much abuse this spring. I need to head to the store and pick up a backup and maybe a few other colors as well. I think I'm also going to pick up a Strike King KVD Toad Buzzbait as well.

If you haven't thrown a buzzbait I'd suggest adding it to your arsenal. It's a great spring bait, especially in choppy water.

fishing user avatarNittyGrittyBoy reply :

@HeyCoach I've been fishing tannic water, and white/chartreuse has been killing it.

I throw 2 types of topwaters: something light and something dark, which is what you were doing.

If I'm confident there are fish in the area, I'll move down the water column.

I like throwing a fluke or donkey rig as a follow up for my topwaters.

My thinking is I've already got them looking up, I'll put something a little closer to them that is more realistic.

Often times, my thought process does not align with the bass.

Does that make me the dumb one? ????????????
