I have used many top water lures, but for some reason have never used a popper, besides the hula popper. Any other recommendations? Thanks- Ben
megabass pop max
Best? There's no best, but I like my Pop- Rs and my Ricos. The easiest I find to walk is a Pop Max.
Pop x and pop max. Go ahead, spend extra on a popper since you aren't likely to lose it.
Pop-R and change out the Hooks. Don Iovino Splash It 2 if you want to splurge.
The Yellow Magic Japanese Popper is a good one.
As is the Duo Realis Popper 64.

Hula Poppers have always caught the most fish for me. I love them.

I was waiting on that.
I carry a box full of poppers from just about every make and model because I love buying and collecting topwater lures, but even with a box full of awesome looking Japanese lures, I still throw the Rebel 60 size Pop'r in Bone Color 90% of the time, and the other 2 I like are the Sebile Splasher in the smaller and larger sizes, and for walking I like the Heddon Pop'n Image and always add a streak of chartreuse down the middle or side for flash since I like to use a fluoro leader to get a different look out of them.
I like the Zell Pop if I find them on sale, and the old Yo-zuri ZZ pop is another that I still use but only have a few left so I am afraid of losing them...I lose poppers more than any other topwater style lure since I am usually casting them toward a specific piece of cover or structure, so I am not going to spook a shoreline if I make a cast that is a bit off, I would rather cut the line.
While I like most Xcalibur stuff, I see no reason to buy a zell pop over a Rebel pop r. They are the exact same bait with different paint job, except pop r is cheaper.

For me, I have seen places where a zell pop will catch 20 fish and the pop-r simply won't get touched. Expensive poppers outproduce the cheaper ones IMO.

Iv seen the exact opposite. Thats why I only use my megabass now.

Isn't magabass an expensive popper…?

This is awesome guys. So many to choose from, I feel the urge of the monkey in my pocket.
I think the chug bug will fall under the popper category. If it does. I've caught plenty of bass off them.
I'm a Yellow Magic fan.
The Pop Max sure has caught me, but don't know about the fish yet.
The Rebel Pop'R is the Zell Pop with a modified lip (and I mean barely modified..I still fish the Original Zell Rowland Rebel Pop'r's before they were disco'd and came back...Zell still throws both, two different baits but a piece of sand paper and 2 minutes you can turn a rebel Pop'R into a Zell Pop...Same company, same designer, same lure same sound.....if you like the Zell Pop, then just fish the Rebel to pop and not spit....
The Zell Pop is the Rebel Pop'r, both were designed by Zell Rowland and I still throw the Zell Rowland Rebel Pop'r by Rebel which can still be found on Ebay for about $10 and you even get an autograph from Zell Rowland. They also seem to have a unique sound as I love both baits but if you want a Zell Pop and want to save money, the new G finish Rebels come with T3 trebles like the Zell Pops, and colors are good as I used to like the Zell Pop for the color patterns and larger hooks.
You can sand down the mouth of the Rebel to match the Zell pop literally in a minute or 2, they modified the lip by a tiny fraction and I mean tiny.....But the Zell Pop is a great lure, I just can't see paying $10 and up for a Pradco lure that is the same when I can buy 3 Rebels for $10.....Just my 2Cents...
Pop R pops when i need it to pop..and spit when i need it to spit..no need for an expensive lure..and yes i have had the pricey ones and not much of a difference
Better to have one of each.
Pop R for me, easily.. Take a file, or a bit of sandpaper, hit that bottom lip a bit.. Upgrade your hooks, bling it with fingernail glitter polish &
Wala, your in business, or just buy a Excalibur Zell pop..
Oh, and three Internet merit points for whomever gets what the perch pattern bait in my hand right.
First from left is Heddon? What's the 3rd from left? I'm guessing.. Yozuri?
Is that the green and white color? Some colors are getting hard to find but we often get lucky here in Florida with older lures.....
Poes cedar, surely not Bagley.. Ok, I'm done, lol
Far left. You got the maker the first time, but what is the bait's name?
The 3rd from the left is a TD Popper.
Popper, lol
Nope.
It looks like a re painted skitter pop by rapala, but there are so many out there that have copied each other, I think it is the sound that makes the Rebel and Heddon's so good....I have that same color Megabass, I could not walk past it when I saw it at Dicks sporting goods....I have only thrown it once on 50 lb braid, I am so afraid to lose it since they are so expensive...I promised myself I would never buy crazy expensive Japanese lures again after buying the Parabugs which were 3 cool looking silicone hairy bugs and they had awesome action, but my $15 lasted 5 minutes as they were torn to shreds by panfish...Didn't realize MM vs. CM while online....big difference...I love some of the Japanese colors, that white Skeleton color is my favorite pattern of all lures.
The Far Left is the G Finish Rebel no?
Nope. It's probably older than you.
Baby Lucky 13 cause I can't see the lip and it is not the Heddon Pop'n image unless it is older than I am...
Yellow magic is my fave.
Wrong mouth for a Lucky 13.
What is the Heddon tiny chugger or chugger?
I'll take crankbaits for $1000...Alex

I couldn't stand it, so I had to Google it.
I've got one for you. This one isn't old or rare but it is pretty unique.

I figured you would know right away what that was. It is smaller than a bread box and it isn't a Lucky Craft.

Even Google took a minute to find it (besides the rules didn't specify "no internet searches"). Pretty cool lure I bet it's the best popper of the lot.
I like the Pop-R's and the Spittin Image Jr's.
I've had the most luck on Rapala Skitter Pop.

This post left a bad taste in my mouth.
Another vote for the Pop-X and Pop-Max.

Hey wait a Cotton pickin minute, I want half the merit badges, I guessed Heddon first, incidentally you must live in Indiana to be a IU fan, lol!!
Here you go, honerable mention badge.
LOL! Halarious..

Heddon Lucky 13
Original hula popper always worked best for me. I try to use the smallest size I can find. Soon as the sun begins to set you can kill em that way
Of the ones I've tried, the Rapala Skitterpop, bar none. Have not tried the Ricos or Yellow Magic.

I own tons of different brands and styles of top water lures, when it comes to catching fish I don't think there is much difference.
My favorite is a chug bug 3/8 oz for bass and peacocks and the 1 oz for saltwater. A mirrorlure papadog is another of my most used.
There are many poppers out and I've used quite a few of them over the years. However, a couple of years ago, I picked this one up. It's "Popn' Image Jr.". This bad boy not only pops great, but it's about the easiest walking top water I've ever tried. You could do a lot worse that this one, and it will not break the bank.

Then there is the MouthWasher.....sweet bait got a collection of these myself.
im gonna try one of the duo realis poppers. hopefully dicks still has some of the xcaliburs
I use Gary Yamamoto Shibuki Popper - Baby Bass
I also use a smaller white popper, not sure of the brand.

To be a Hoosier fan you just have to live in Indiana for at least 10 years, be able to like them even when they are terrible (which is most of the time), and pick them to win at least one game in every March Madness bracket you ever fill out.
I dont know the make of this popper but it is a fish catcher. The hook hanger pulled out of the rear , so I put the dressed treble in the front position and it still catches them .
Looks like a Zell Pop. I hate it when I forget what one of my best fish catchers name is.
I still find myself going with the LiveTarget bait ball Popper I got in a MTB one month. Hasn't let me down since, and walks super easy.
Of course there's no 'best' popper, but one of my favorite is the Snag Proof Ish Popping Frog.
The Ish popping frog can be worked a variety of ways, and if you're looking for a loud 'pop',
the double faceplate can be popped to sound like a depth charge. As a bonus, the Ish frog
doesn't require repeated wringing out, 'that is', until the hook chamber gets ruptured.

Yup, Rick Astley is a big fan of poppers

I love topwater lures. Especially ones that TW Doesnt even carry
I missed that spinner in the cup at first glance. ^^

You know you can easily fix that by screwing in a new screw eye and putting epoxy on threads. You can get cheap screw eyes from the picture hanging section at Home Depot or Jannsnetcraft. They are only $1.89 on Jannsnetcraft.
I haven't caught a dang thing with that. And I love poppers. On 4/21/2015 at 8:25 PM, BrownBear said:I use Gary Yamamoto Shibuki Popper - Baby Bass

Is that mouth washer lure not made anymore? I can't find it in many places

No it isn't made anymore. It came out 10 or 12 years ago and sold for about $16 then. In addition to the prop in the mouth it also has openings in the mouth that allow water to flow through and out the gill slits on the side of the head. It can also be cranked a few inches under the surface, it creates quite a commotion and bubble trail. I tried to get every color they made but they are hard to find. I have 4 or 5 them. Pretty cool little bait.

They all have beautiful finishes. Of the ones on Ebay right now, I would get the Morning Dawn.

I think that is a Yo-Zuri bait based on the color and shape of the mouth? Like someone said you can get another hook hanger and epoxy it in.
Allen
Not necessarily my all time favorite but d**n nice for the money and I never see them brought up on here. The Academy brand H2O poppers. They have great finishes, VMC hooks, epoxy dressed thread on the feathered hook, oval split ring, AND were recently on sell for 3.99. Cheaper than a POP-R in my stores and soooo much better quality out of the box. They spit more than pop, and to be honest, they fish walk and sound a lot like my rico......go figure.
CHUG BUG
Old school basser...
I like the popping action of rebel popr just a regular pop sound a good pop! I have a few different brands some a little higher end but a lot of the newer poppers are like chuggers or spitting or walking poppers I want a higher quality popper with that same action you get from a rebel popr? Anyone have a suggestion? Because so far for me the popr is the best!
I just picked up a Jackall SK pop Grande.I haven't used it yet though.
The Original Poster did not specify "hard" poppers, yet every reply refers to a PLUG (why?).
In most of the waters I ply, a hard popper (plug) would not move very far without getting fouled.
When I think of "popper"; the first lure that POPS into my mind is the "Spro Bronzeye Popper".
You can toss a popping frog wherever your heart desires
Roger
The skitter pop is nice but I've caught more lmb on a chug bug than any other.
R2S Bubble Walker 80 has been really good for me the last couple years.
If I had to pick a favorite, it would be a Zell Pop. This particular one has been through several sets of hooks, and is much more beat up than it was when this picture was taken 5 years ago.
