A spin off from the "Lost Lures Thread". I don't know why but finding a lure that somebody else lost, or wasn't up to the challenge of getting out of that d**n tree makes me feel like a kid coming down the steps on Christmas morning!
This year I found a Rapala Husky Jerk in silver/blue back, and a Strike King 1.5 squarebill in sexy shad. As well as various hooks that I pulled out of fish from other anglers. The Rapala and the squarebill both will need new trebles and split rings, but the body of the lures cleaned up great.
Cheap thrills right?
I was jigging a 5" flutter spoon in some standing timber last weekend, and snagged a brand spankin new duo realis spinbait!
The waters I currently fish are heavily fished public waters. I find lures almost every time out. Of course, stickworms are most common, but squarebills seem to be popular lately.
Great idea TheRodFather. I too enjoy finding lures. I've found a decent amount over the years. Here's a handful I found this past October in a single outing snorkeling at a local fishing spot.
I know some guys that work at a local power plant on a man made reservoir. Picking lures off the screen on the water intakes gave them unbelieveable lure collections.
Legend has it that the Safe Harbor (Lancaster PA area) hydro plant draws down the water every year and the shallow water area where the Conestoga meets up with the Susquehanna that everybody bank fishes from produces buckets of lures. I haven't seen it, nor found a way to know when they are going to do it. But I'll tell ya, I have lost a dozen lures there easy.
Back in the 80s I did a lot of trout & salmon fishing on Lake Ontario. Lots of people cast lots of lures from the piers. I also did a lot of night fishing. One night I saw a bright light underwater off one side of the pier. Up came a diver with a bunch of bicycle frames wrapped in wire he'd obviously set out and was collecting lures from! Pretty low.

I've always said that if I lived on a lake and had a dock, I would have contraptions that would collect lures underneath my dock with ropes to pull them up when I wanted to check them
I get a huge thrill when I find a lure, even if it is just a rusted out spinner. Today I removed a small booya frog from a tree. It took me about 15 min and I managed to slash my finger open on it, but it was still totally worth it.
I fish from a kayak a lot and manage to get a ton of lost lures that way. I have a 30" telescoping magnetic pick-up tool that I keep in my yak, it has made lure harvesting much easier. I keep tying to think of a way to mount a safety cutter on it, then I can really start getting them.

Yeah, you can increase your luck if you're willing to climb trees.

Oh man, I saw this guy the other day maybe 20' up a very small tree trying to retrieve a crank. He was only above like a 2-4' deep creek and I was ready to call 911 as soon as I heard the splash. When I walked back by later the crank was gone and the bank was dry, so I guess he got it.
Nothing better. Years ago I found a Mepps Comet Mino and caught my first LMB on it. That got me hooked on this hobby
Once while Searching the Shoreline for Bass Paroling nearby the Shoreline and I found a Dead rotting Duckling and Next to it A Livetarget Bluegill Crank bait. The lure was tangled with Braided fishing line. I cannot still understand WHY somebody would abandon a 13 USD Crankbait.
Not a lure but Almost as good . . .
A-Jay
Most of the lures I've found have been entangled on one of mine when I retrieved it. My telescopic lure retriever has not only saved me many times its cost, but added a good number of cranks to my collection.
Lure hunting is a hobby of mine, and I'm almost as good at it as I am at using the lures I find. On average, I'll fill 2-3 Plano 3700 boxes with found baits a year. I find baits nobody else ever does it seems. I've even found crankbaits because I heard their rattles while they were rocking in the waves and hidden in the weeds. Not many fishing trips I don't find some. Last time I went out just to lure hunt, I found 18 cranks.
These are my most recent finds (minus a few cheap baits I didn't care to take a picture of). 4 baits and approaching $100 in value thanks to the suspending pre-Rapala Wiggle Wart. All retrieved from way up in the trees at LOZ.
While fishing with a friend of mine, we came across a nearly new, #10 Rapala X-Rap in the "Hot Steel" color hanging from a tree. My partner tied it on and caught 8 smallies on 10 casts just off a small, un-named island. We now call that island, Hot Steel Island.
$200 pair of oakleys last month. Unfortunately they were down there too long to be usable.

If I had a real boat, there would always be a telescoping pruning saw in the rodlocker.

I have a telescoping lure retriever that reaches 18', and I still had to jump to reach the Whopper Plopper. That's how I get a majority of them.
I have found lots of cranks that I lost before while fishing in ponds. They get snagged on timber then when the hooks rust off then they float to the top and drift to the shore.

A few years ago I got a Megabass 110 Magnum in Pro Blue out of a tree at Table Rock. I tied it on and it was my best fish catcher of the weekend until the lip fell off during the retrieve.

Nice clean up job for sure. I have found that my wife's sonicare toothbrush with a little extra baking soda added to the toothpaste works wonders on lures like this. I have my own dedicated lure scrubbing attachment, just so we don't get mixed up.

A mix up there could be big trouble.....!
Hit a small pond after work. The main section is less than an acre, with a lot of river-like bends that lead to a second smaller pool. I have got maybe one fish in the 2lb class out of it but in the spring, summer, and fall, can usually catch a few dinks to 12"ers per trip fishing a few different finesse styles. Today, I didn't catch any fish, but snagged this guy right off the bank.
I also found a second, larger jerk bait (oddly it has been spray painted black), and a ruined frog.
It's a public pond, but I almost never find lures or even see much sign of other people fishing, except when they stock it with trout twice a year. I think I might try larger lures in the future, as someone seems to think it is worth throwing them in there.
Found 21 baits Wednesday. Nothing really good this time. Got a white war eagle and a shadow rap shad. The rest was cheaper baits but still very productive couple hours.
Had a good lure finding day today.
Man, are those all from trees?

Only the bladed jig was in a tree, I got that one before I even put the boat in the water. The rest were found walking the bank.
I cannot conceive of such a pressured place, or were you like the first guy to hit the place after a drawdown?
Had a good lure finding day yesterday, although no where near as many as bluebasser found. Found a roughly four square foot section of heavy fabric on a heavily fished shoreline, it would normally be beneath the water before winter draw down. I found a kvd 1.5 square bill, a kvd 1.0, a 1/2 ounce red eye shad, a big o crankbait, a 1/2 ounce rattle trap, a 3/4 ounce rattletrap, a 1/4 ounce ripnrap, and a lucky craft pointer 65. Plus a bunch of hooks and sinkers, all on the same small piece of fabric.

Heavy pressure, I walk that same 1/2 mile stretch every year at least once.

Found two Bandit series 200 crank baits one beetle spin and 1/2 dozen or so white plastic lizards while walking a rocky jetty last weekend.
I've never heard of someone finding that many in one day.. that's ridiculous.. and what a bunch of lazy fisherman. I'm too cheap to cut it and take the loss. The only time I leave it is if it's down in the depths and I don't have a choice.

They don't lose them where I walked. The lake runs north and south, most fishing occurs during the warmer months when the wind typically blows from the south, so I walk the banks to the north of popular fishing areas. This lake is one of the most popular in the state, thousands of people fish it every summer from boats as well as from shore. The shoreline fishermen actually are probably the ones that lose a lot of them and just have no way to retrieve them. I do find some from obviously lazy fishermen though. The bladed jig was hanging in a tree by the boat ramp parking lot and I literally walked over and pulled it out of the tree by hand. Whoever lost it could have gotten it back extremely easy but for whatever reason chose not to.

Holy Crap! You 'found' more cranks than I even own!
Hiking around Iceland in August, I came upon a huge river. Wondering if people fished there, I walked along the bank and found a cool fly lure near some rocks. Haven't found any bass lures though.
That collection above is
I hope to do some walking this summer when water levels drop. It's been a great winter so far in California and the lake levels are steadily rising.
I think this is all I found this year.
Walked for a few hours again today after fishing. Not the best location but still did pretty decent.

I'm one of those who would loose spoons chucking for salmon on lake ontario piers. I always wondered how many spoons are out there sitting on the bottom
Most probably, a LOT.
The bottom of the Salmon River in Pulaski NY was (probably still is) festooned with an INCREDIBLE amount of line, lead (of all sizes), hooks, and lures. It was truly shocking to see. Litter like that, above the water, would result in immediate action.
Holy cow bluebasser, I can't believe you find all of those walking the shoreline. You must be the only person fishing the shoreline right now where you're going - any place I go with boating/shore access is usually picked clean, I might find 1-2 lures tops.

It's also pretty good to find your own lost lures that you forgot about. This one place I fish has woven filter fabric exposed at the base of a dam, and that fabric is deadly on lures. I thought I had learned my lesson to avoid it after losing some lures there, but lost two of my favorites back-to-back last weekend.
I went back to retrieve the two snagged red eye shads. The water is heavily stained. When I reached in and fumbled around to grab my chartreuse RES with the lure retriever, I wound up winding the fabric around the catcher as if I was twirling spaghetti around a fork.
Then I slowly yanked out an armload of fabric - I got back both red eye shads and a bonus: one of my long-forgotten red eye shads plus a surprise - a bubblegum 5" dinger that had expanded to about 5 x its normal volume. Next time I think I will go back and "prune" some more fabric.
I cleaned up the old red eye using the sonicare, ready for new hooks and to get back in service.
I wonder what type of metal the eyes on the red eye shad are made of, that the treble hooks would rot off but the eyes are still ok. Or did yo already have them off for the picture....?

@TheRodFather I think this is interesting too. I'm pretty sure the eyes are a plastic resin of some type. The eyes on the lure submerged for several months are now cloudy, I believe due to abrasion since it is right near a discharge outlet that can be very turbulent. There was already some faint rust around the hook hangers and split rings on the lures that were down for just a few days. There was considerable rust on the hooks of the lure that was stuck for months. I had cut the hooks off to make getting them out of the fabric easier, and because they were shot anyway. Only surface rust on the hook hangers, easily removed. I think the hook and split ring rust was what accumulated on the old lure.
Yes, I use those cheap Eagle Claw snaps! Almost no rust on them.
Found these baits in the trees along the Susquehanna river in the spring.
I found a couple lures last year. I cleaned it up replaced the hooks and rings.
I rarely find lures. Maybe I just don't have a eye for it or unlucky because someone like Bluebasser86 is coming through in front of me.
I did fish a spinning rod and reel out of about 15' last year. It had a knock off chrome blue back lipless still tied on. I looked up the rod n reel and together they were $9 at Walmart I think I know why patience ran short with it.
I often fish public parks and many of the bass fisherman that fish these places leave soft plastics scattered all around the lakes. Many of these soft plastics are in good condition, so I use them and catch many bass on their lures. Also find hard plastic lures often in trees and have acquired a decent collection of topwaters, crankbaits, jerkbaits, etc.
About 9 months ago, I found a Jackal Gantrel Jr. Swimbait (Spawn Gill color) floating in our lake. I was able to clean it up and have used it a few times, smiling at my $31 find every time I tie it on. Today, I found a second Gantrel Jr, this time in Ghost Gill color and in perfect shape hanging off the corner of a dock. This one still has the factory feathered hooks, so I guess it is even sightly more valuable than the first one.
Since most likely both of these lures were used by someone sneaking on to the lake illegally (possibly at night) and not willing to expose themselves in order to retrieve their hung up lures, I want to publicly thank whoever this individual is who is building my Swimbait collection. I would like to request the next one they leave behind be in Scale bass, I think that would be a nice addition.
I've almost filled the first 3700 box of the year with found baits already. Found a Rogers Big Jim last time out and a brand new Sammy in American Shad color.

That's pretty awesome. If you find that many lures on the banks, just imagine how many are down there to be picked up snorkeling. Most are probably hung up deep, but I'm sure there'd be a few snagged up shallow.
@Bluebasser86, Do you even buy crankbaits any more?

Not very often. I don't even fish them very often.
found an ayu suspending smithwick rouge today in some timber
Only found one bait at Table Rock this weekend but it was a clown colored Lucky Craft Staysee.
Found all of these on Saturday at a local lake:
Z Man chatterbait with trailer on it (hanging on the garbage can at the ramp, still in fishable condition)
Bill Lewis Rat-L-Trap 1/4oz. in Chrome/Blue (friend snagged some line while fishing a crankbait and brought it up, hooks were starting to rust but overall in great shape)
1/4oz. lead bullet sinker (I snagged a big clump of line while fishing a crankbait, this was attached to said line)
Found a Suspending Rougue in Table Rock color (my favorite) Sunday!!
Of course this was 30 seconds after casting it & having my line snap as I sent it off to the middle of the lake in choppy waves. Off I go, full power on the trolling motor and trying to keep my eyes locked on the spot.
Trying to think glass half full here!!
Over the past 2 years I snagged broken off lines with my spinnerbaits. I've gotten a Stanley spinnerbait, culprit spinnerbait, and a culprit buzzbait. Descent condition and all 3 have caught fish.
Besides several lures, - I actually found a Nice GShock Watch on bank. It is still ticking and working well
was able to get out to a local (very) small pond yesterday morning. I got hung up on a laydown on the far side of the pond, so I took a walk in the woods. I came out to the bank and there was this silver Pop-R. Two steps down the bank was the second one.
Nice to find something other than ticks for a change.
I have a good friend that lives near some really popular stocked trout waters in a state park, most of which is pretty heavily wooded with branches overhanging 7-12 feet above the water. By the third week of trout season, the branches look like they're decorated for Christmas from all the people who trout fish with hangovers one weekend a year. I went lure hunting with him one day. We covered one side of the creek for about a mile pulling down branches with a homemade grappling hook tied to some paracord and scored over 150 various lures in one day. He said his best season was 1500 lures, mostly Joe Flies and other small spinners. While my friend lies a lot, I am inclined to believe him. He works in the ski and snow industry so he spends most summers hunting, fishing, and collecting unemployment. He takes the found lures to the flea market and it's a real boost to his income.
Boy you guys are really racking them up. I haven't found anything yet this year. Lost a couple X-raps though
Best lure I have found is a SPRO BBZ on Black Hills Lake Seneca. I thought it was a dead fish until I got closer.
Allen
Lady Luck smiled on me this weekend had a nice bass hit my KVD frog and pull into some really thick milfoil and lily pads. Struggled to turn the fish and frog was thrown on its first jump into some brush. 10 min later and many thanks to some 20# braided line I was able to break a limb free so I could retrieve my frog. Much to my surprise I was also able to retrieve a nice chartreuse colored terminator Spinnerbait and couple of Norman little N's. All in all not a bad day in east Tx.
I haven't been fishing as much this year due to a tremendous amount of OT at work, but I'm still finding my share (and probably more). Had to hop out of the boat and wade up the shoreline to retrieve a customers bait from a bush along the shoreline last Friday, was rewarded when I found this guy hiding on one of the roots of the same bush.
Managed to go snorkeling on the last day of summer for me and pick up some lures. Didn't do too bad, but I know there is a hot area that still needs to be picked. Couldn't get to it because there were some people salmon fishing over it. Will have to go out on a rainy day when people aren't fishing. Water temps 59 degrees still feels ice cold in a wet suit though!
Found a Rapala shad rap, a jitterbug, and a Jimmy Houston signature super spook so far.
Sorry to open up an old thread, but this fits. I found the Deps Buzzjet Jr. pictured below snagged on a boat cover today. It was about 25 yards from a common area, so I am guessing the original owner was fishing from bank, made a bad cast and decided to break off the line rather than ring the owners doorbell to ask to retrieve it. At a Tackle Warehouse price of $25.95, I would have swam over to the dock to get it back!!
My 3 most expensive lures (this and a pair of Gantrel Jr's) were all found lures. Either I am way too cheap to buy expensive gear or teenagers in Orange County have money burning a hole in their pockets.
Found another 90 Whopper Plopper a couple weeks ago, bone colored. Changed hooks and straight into my box. I've now found 9 ploppers in less than a year, I guess the benefit to them being so popular.

I hooked the line on a rod and reel a few days ago. I've caught them before, so I know what it feels like. Unfortunately the fisherman that lost this rod didn't tie a decent knot when they spooled the line, because I could feel it easily come loose after I had already reeled in about 50 yards of their line.

I couldn't see any line in the picture, so I assumed it was a bad knot. I guess it was incorrect drag setting or worn line. Whatever it was, I'm sure that fish feels a lot better now.
i snagged a line that had a brand new black chatterbait. i tied it on and left it on for 2 years and its been a bass slaying machine.

First decent lure I've found in a while. Check out the way it's rigged, and the way the braid is tied. There's like 3 knots there...?
Got a Bone 110 Plopper out of a tree 2 weeks ago, second plopper I've found in a month and either the 8th or 9th one I've found this year. Also got a PopR and LiveTarget Bait Ball squarebill out of trees last week.
I was fishing in a tournament earlier this year and caught a Perch colored Rapala Fat Rap FR5 on a Ned Rig. It was in perfect condition, so I knew it couldn't have been down there that long. Turns out it was a guy in my fishing club who lost it earlier that same day.
Saw some spawning Bluegill one day and decided to play with them. Tried 3 baits with no luck.
Then I remembered I'd found a tiny jighead caterpillar looking thing a few weeks earlier.
Tied it on and pulled in 8 gills and a bass with it.
Was actually my first sight-fishing for anything and all the gills I caught went right back to their beds upon release. Pretty cool.

The count so far is four crankbaits, two spinnerbaits, and a buzzbait that I had to use the telescopic lure retriever to get down.

Good haul.
I found a black jitterbug, a Spro swimbait in rainbow trout (a pond without rainbow), at Ponkapog, and two crankbaits at Blue Hills Reservoir. I also pulled a white spinner off a tree branch on Cape Cod, though I don't remember which pond.
On two occasions I found lures I lost on earlier trips. One was a perch blade bait I reeled up when I snagged a branch at Hedges. I lost that bait the previous fall/winter.
The second was a bluegill flavored Rapala Skitter Walk I lost when a pickerel bit through my line at Ponkapog. I found that one just off the launch in 3' of water.
I'm much better at losing baits than I am at finding them.....
This years additions.
Not pictured: One 20lb mushroom anchor, about 30 bobbers, and 2 stringers.

I like that mouse.
Walked a bank Thursday. Had a feeling it would be good being one of the only reservoirs that wasn't closed with the high water this year.
caught several rods, found many lures. best catch was an 800$ gloomis/stradic ci4 combo
best part was the guy who lost it claimed it after the tourney
i found a rapala today

Did you take the hooks off or were they all missing?

Most were missing but I take them off if they aren't because I put them in my pocket while I'm walking.
