What reel for Helium 3 2025

fishing user avatarPABassFish007 reply :

Hi everyone!

Im looking to splurge and buy a Helium 3.  Im looking for feedback on what model to get for jigs 1/4 oz to 1/2oz usually with a trailer.

Also I need recommendations on a good reel ($200 or less) to pair with this rod.

Any helps appreciated!

fishing user avatarFryDog62 reply :

It’s less about the jig weight than the cover you pull it through.  I have both the Helium 3 in MH and Heavy... for jigs in/near the weeds I go with the 7-3 Heavy.  Lighter Texas rigs I use the 7-0 MH.  Both are paired with a Shimano Curado 70.  I really like both set ups...

fishing user avatarLonnieP reply :

I put a Tatula SV on my 7 ft MH helium 3. Haven't had it very long but I've been out a couple times throwing 3/8 jigs and it has quickly become my favorite setup

fishing user avatarjordanpolk09 reply :

I bought the H3 7'1 MH XF for texas rigs. 1/8-3/8 oz weights + plastics. I paired it with a tatula 100. It felt pretty good the two times I've had it out. I like the smaller size reel compared to the previous daiwa models I've handled. Small hands I guess.

There are so many good reels out now you just have to find what feels good to you and on that specific rod. I fish with reels from Lew's, Daiwa, Abu. My next reel purchase will be a shimano to try out. I shift new reels around between rods at the end of the year to see what feels best given the gear ratios I have and techniques used.

You really cant go wrong in my opinion. I haven't bought a reel that I wasn't happy using. Some are of course better than others.

I've never had a H power Kistler but for all my jig rods I've always used a MH+ or H power. I hardly use any jigs under 3/8oz though and fish jigs around cover the majority of the time.

fishing user avatarJoshua van Wyk reply :

Personally I'd wait for the next 20% off sale on Ebay and get the Curado DC.

fishing user avatarChance_Taker4 reply :

I use a Tat SV on my H3 and love it. It balances well. The rod itself was made and balanced with a *** reel so you may want to look in that direction if you want a perfectly balanced combo. But I have no complaints with the Tat SV or the few times I put a Gen 4 Revo SX on it.

fishing user avatarkschultz76 reply :

I have a 7’1” MH XF Helium 3 and a 7’0” Light MH Fast as well. For 1/4 oz jigs I’d pick up either depending on cover, for 3/8oz jigs the MH.  For 1/2 oz jigs the MH is likely going to feel underpowered especially in cover. I’m thinking if you use mostly 3/8-1/2 oz jigs you likely want the 7’0 or 7’3” Heavy especially in any cover. You can always call Kistler or email them for their feedback.

Kistler rods in my my experience are lightweight and nicely balanced, my 7’1” is just a tiny bit tip heavy but not noticeable. They benefit from you most with a lightweight compact reel. I’d be looking at a Curado 70, or a Tatula SV in your price range. If you found a deal a Chronarch MGL would be nice as well as would a Zillion SV TW. But personally I’d stick with a reel at 7 oz or under.

Woukd blow your budget but i but I love my 13 Met mounted in my Kistlers.

fishing user avatarGReb reply :

Get the H3 7’3 Heavy.

fishing user avatarnew2BC4bass reply :

I think the Helium 3 deserves a Steez or Metanium MGL.  At the very least a Bantam MGL.  :teeth:

fishing user avatarDwight Hottle reply :

I have a bantam MGL on my He3-H-73XF covers 3/8-1 1/2.

fishing user avatarstratoliner92 reply :

I've got Curado70's on a GLX803 MH/Xfast for 3/16-1/2 t rigs and jigs also another on a Tatula2018 7'1" H/fast for 3/4 and they perform well with #14 Sunline Sniper, really like that reel size in hand

fishing user avatarPABassFish007 reply :

I forgot to mention that I would prefer to throw 17 lb fluro instead of braid..

With this being said, are these still go to reels that will balance out and stand up to jigging?

Yes . All of the reels mentioned  in this thread will work fine with fluoro. Not sure if you know it or not but the Helium 3 is on sale now, 21% off.

fishing user avatarPABassFish007 reply :

Do you know how long this sale is going for?

history says a week or two, it's somewhat unpredictable, but their sales like this are frequent.

I fish several Helium 3's, and I'll add to the "they like a light reel", I have steez's and metanium mgl's on mine. I picked up a steez sv103 for right around $200 brand new off the auction site recently... Keep your eyes open. Tatula/curado 70 would be my next best option, but I'll say this I've paired a MH 7'4" H3 with both a tatula CT and steez's and the weight difference makes a huge difference in the balance and feel imo.

as far as power rating, the replies above were spot on, in fairly heavy cover with a 1/2oz jig, I'd opt for heavy, but in fairly light cover or heavier with a 1/4oz I like the MH. (All my H3's are 7'3"-7'4")

Reel weights: this is just a little chart I keep, obviously missing some models, but may help you

Steez SV103: 181g
SV103: 221g
SV105: 175.7g
ALPHAS SV 105SHL 175g
Aldebaran  136g
Met MGL 175g
Chonarch MGL: 190g
Curado 70:  184g
Tatula CT : 209g
Tatula SV : 204g
Zillion SV TW: 195g
Steez A: 190g
Steez SVTW: 160g

So your saying with a tatula or curado 70 the rod balances out better?

Also am i better off going with Fast or XFast

I think you misread my post, based on reel weights, I like a reel around 181g on a MH 7'4" H3. Curado 70 is the only reel close to that readily available under your $200 limit. Personally I like a steez sv103 on that rod :) they balance very nicely together.

H3's only come x-fast

Curado 70: I don't own one, fished on briefly, it's nice, but I tend to enjoy the SV reels more. Thats just personal preference. It should based on weight balance very well with the H3's you're discussing though :)

fishing user avatarYeeleng Thao reply :

At $200

Daiwa Tatula sv tw or Shimano Curado 70 which ever brand you like more.

At a bit cheaper price point

Shimano Curado over the Daiwa CT type r

Anything less go with a Lews

Go 13 if you want something different.

I have tried both the tat sv and curado 70 on my 7.1 h3 and I like the 70 much more but it really is just personal preference. You could always get both and sell the one you don't like.

Are you using a light med heavy or med heavy?

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

I'll just mention throwing 1/4 oz. bait on 17# fluoro is not going to be fun.

Im debating between a couple of things but want to pull the trigger today as kistler has a good deal thats probably going to end this week..

These are: do i go with LMH or MH helium 3?

-- i can get a reel after i suppose...

Im a fan of Pline Tactical Fluro.

What line do you think would be better? 12 lb?

Sorry for all the questions but thanks in advance!

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Questions and answers are what we're all here for!

For jigs over 1/2 oz., I use 50# braid with or without a 20# Blue Label leader or 15# Invisx.  1/4 oz. jigs are thrown on either 10# Invisx or a spinning rod with 20# braid with or without a 10# Blue Label leader.  For really big jig and worm, I use to throw 25# Invisx, but it's 50 or 65# straight braid these days.

Depends what cover you're fishing,  I think MH would be better if you're throwing half oz jigs, remember a 3/8 oz jig + trailer comes out to be 1/2-5/8 oz. I only fish open water so I use 30-40 lb braid with 15 lb yozuri hyrbid leader.

I fished a 1/4 ounce jig with my new MH H3 Saturday and had no problems. If you’re going to throw 1/2 ounce you definitely don’t want the LMH. If you still can’t decide, call Trey Kistler and he will give you a recommendation.

I use 12 lb P-line tactical for 1/4 ounce jigs and light t-rigs.
