I don't have big bass in my area. Can I fish a Drop Shot with an ultralight with 6lb test mono?
Thanks
I dint know if mono would be sensitive enough, but 6lb is fine. Just play the fish. Don't horse the fish in and you should be good.
Only if you use Mustad hooks.

Don't wear out your fingers making too many topics!! lol
I think that would be fine. It'll give you a fun fight. Just make sure and not hook into any pike .

I'm sick of people saying this. If you have nothing good to say, don't say it at all. That has nothing to do with the topic I posted. So you shouldn't have even responded.
Sure you can, also mono is fine, been using it for years and you can feel ok with it...

why wouldn't mono be sensitive enough? serious question
also, yea the set up works well just be sure to have your drag set and be prepared for a long fight if you hook a decent one.
holy crap i laughed my butt off literally. On 1/23/2015 at 4:01 AM, ww2farmer said:Only if you use Mustad hooks.

Because he read it on the internet.
Nylon mono may not be sensitive enough to detect light bites in deeper water. On 1/23/2015 at 6:06 AM, corn-on-the-rob said:why wouldn't mono be sensitive enough? serious question

Actually, I have vast experience with mono for spinning reel applications. For years, Stren Original and Trilene XL Nylon Monos were ALL I used on every setup. Thanks for your uncalled for assumption sir.On 1/23/2015 at 8:43 AM, Jaheff said:Because he read it on the internet.
Why are you so hell-bent on catching small fish? If number of bites is what you're after, fish for bluegills.
It should work but won't be ideal.
Any stick and string will work. Will it be optimal? No. I feel you'll have trouble keeping fish buttoned up.

hmmm, well my experience up on lake erie, mono is the "textbook" for catching big light biting smallies is on 6lb or 8lb. Seems plenty sensitive for many, but to each his own

I don't know about it being "textbook". My catch rate increased when I ditched the mono for floro and it increased again when I ditched the straight floro for braid with a floro leader.

you kinda asked for it. no offense was meant im sure but your asking a lot of questions that you could have found answers to by searching, along with assuming that mustad hooks are the best thing since sliced bread.

Yea I use braid FC leader as well, but I should have specified that before FC was popular mono in that lb range was the go-to and still is used my many. FC can be better for sure but saying mono isn't sensitive enough for deep water applications is far from true, though I can understand his preference for not using it.
I LOVE braid with FC leader for erie (or anywhere for that matter), the abrasion resistance for the rocks and the strength to horse in accidental giant drum/cats is awesome, use it on all of my rods with great success but wouldn't hesitate to throw mono if I had no choice.
I guess if he would have said not as sensitive instead of not sensitive enough I wouldn't have engaged.
Mono isnt as sensitive, and I think its possible you could miss more bites due to the buoyancy of mono creating a bow in your line, especially in deeper water, but it has its advantages with line with lower pound tests compared to fluoro. Castability, manageability, and knot strength are vital when dealing with relatively delicate line with light baits and those three characteristics are generally better with mono. It might be the way to go for some.
Remember, the Japanese fish the drop shot with two-pound test so your six-pound test is fine.
I use six-pound test all the time for the drop shot.
But not on a light weight rod. I go with a medium power rod.
I agree with Sam, 6lb mono is fine for a drop shot but not an ultra light rod, medium or medium light in the 6'8" to 7'1" range.
Light action is fine. I would go the braid w/ a leader route. Braid will compensate for the lack of power in the rod to a certain extent.

Dude, it's an online forum. If you can't take the occasional ribbing from people you have no business on any message boards.

Please don't take farmer's posts too hard, if you read between the lines....he's saying it's fine with his sarcasm. Like the others said this is the internet and you should expect a well placed jab here and there.
To answer your original question, yes your setup will work. As for it being an ideal setup? No. My main drop shot setups are the following:
6'8 Shimano Crucial ML/XF - 10 lb braid with 6-8 lb floro leader. I'm thinking of going even lighter this year. This setup is my go to for shallow water or open water up to 10' deep anything deeper I'll use my Aetos 7' M/F or 6'9 M/XF Smallmouth Elite Tech. The sensitivity over mono is leaps and bounds better.
Please note that drop shot isn't just for "small fish" though.
right, were not trying to "harass" you, it's just silly coming on here and throwing out a statement like thatOn 1/23/2015 at 10:14 PM, 5fishlimit said:Dude, it's an online forum. If you can't take the occasional ribbing from people you have no business on any message boards.

GT,
If you would be more specific, you'd get more appropriate responses. What is a "big bass" in your "area"? 2 lbs, 4lbs, 6 lbs? Have you ever dropshotted before? Am guessing no otherwise no need to ask your question.
As others have mentioned, you can drop shot with just about any setup and any lb. test line. Should you or can you use this setup? What exactly are you wanting to know? I doubt anyone bass fishing would use a UL rod to dropshot unless it's for panfish with 2lb. line. There is no reason to use a UL rod for bass unless there's absolutely no cover to wrap you up, the bass don't exceed 10"-12", or you want to challenge your fish-fighting skills. If you're fishing water that has anything over 4 lbs. in it then you're asking for trouble. If you want to use 6 lb. line (which I do and most others do) then get a ML or L action rod, at least.
