Looking at the Daiwa BG model and thinking about 2500. What do you guys think?

You can get a Shimano Symetre for $69.99 at Cabelas right now. I personally think this is the best deal going. I would go with a 2500 Shimano but Daiwas 2500 are normally comparable to a 3000 Shimano.

I usually will go with the smallest i can get away with,and how it feels on the rod. Plus i use braid on mine,so the smaller spool (1000&1500) size shimano have never been an issue.

A 2500 size reel is a good all reel, for varying types of line, and fishin. It will also have bigger drag washers, and can hold more line. But ive never had any bass, empty my spool on the smaller reels.

That Symetre is a great reel at a very good price. I have several Shimano spinning reels but also really like my wife's Pflueger Supreme XT.

I second the smaller reel size, but that's a personal
preference I have. I use 1000s for all manner of bass
fishing.

A Daiwa 1500 or 2000 would suit you perfectly fine if
that's the direction you want to go. And a 2500 is also
perfectly fine! Depends on what size you feel most
comfy with.

I also use braid for mainline, PowerPro in 10# and
PPSS8 in 15#, which are equivalent of 2# and 4# mono,
respectively. So a small reel can fit a lot of braid, then
I simply use a leader anywhere from 4-15#.

2500 should be fine, especially if using braid under about 15, as previously mentioned. Symetres are nice reels, and I have always liked every Daiwa I've owned. No experience with most other brands.

Size 1000 or 2500 Shimano will work just fine, which one would depend more on the rod you'll be putting it on. Do you have your rod specs?

I don't have a rod yet either.. Don't know what I'm gonna get hopefully a scent rod under 100 dollars

The bg has good features and an aluminum frame. Personally I'd either get an exceler which retails in the same range but goes for around 60 on flea bay, or my first choice would be to save 8 more bucks and get a daiwa procyon off fleabay. It's a 150 dollar retail level reel, with magseal tando protect the gears, waterproof drag, and daiwa newest technologies, all in an aluminum frame that should hold up much better than most of the reels around that price that have graphite (plastic) frames. Also to each his own I guess but I use mono, fluoro, and braid at different times and a 2500 will manage line LOTS better than a 1000. Also no matter what line you are using a bigger spool will cast farther because there is less friction when the line comes off the spool

Here's another option!!! I like the Daiwa 1300 SS with a Duckett 7' med. Reel has stood the test of time and are awesome and with larger spool cast well. They are also light. Good luck on your choice.

I think that for the price 200$ only shimano. May be the size from 2500-3000 I recommend personally new shimano nasci or quantum energy PTID30.

I have no real experience with daiwa's spinning reels, but from what I hear they are pretty good reels.

All my spinning gear is in the 2000-2500 or comparable size, and I think it is perfect for bass fishing. Currently I have two spinning set ups that go with me on every trip, and that's a St. Croix mojo bass with a Mitchell 308 pro, and a st Croix triumph with a shimano symetre 2500. Both are great, but I tend to like the mojo bass/Mitchell set up better. It's a good setup for right around $200 and I would recommend it to anyone.

I love my Shimano Stradic Spinning Reels. Smooth as butter and they are tough as nails. Not cheap I get it, but I'm a big believer you get what you pay for.

I dislike the skinny bail arm wire on Shimanos, seems to get bent too easily. The thicker wire on a daiwa bail seems more robust and doesn't get bent as easily.

That'd be my one complaint with Shimano reels. Something I mentioned
years back in my review of the Lexa 2000SH. I love the bail wire feel on
Daiwa reels.

But I do love my Stradics 1000s....

Before you buy, take a good look at a Pflueger President or President Limited and Supreme. One more to consider is an Okuma RTX30. It is super smooth but much more like the size of a President 2500

Take fishnkamp's advice and get 25 size president, it retails for only sixty dollars and is the best sub 100 dollar spinning reel I have ever used.

Right now my wife and I own 7 of the Presidents, some as old as 10 years old. We fish 25,30, 35 and a 40 size. They have all handled some pretty good size smallies, largies and stripers.

I grew up with Shimanos, wore a cheapo Sidestab rear drag model out until it literally fell apart into the water this year. I'm a lefty and love the trigger casting system, it fits me perfectly. So I recently bought a Spirex front drag, theoretically the best Shimano w/ casting trigger I could buy. It's a total POS. It feels like the bearings are made of concrete. My other spinning reel is a well used Pfluegar Trion and it is loads better than the new Spirex in every way. I missed the return window at Cabelas or I would have swapped it for a President.

Even harder to go wrong with a Pflueger President. I have 4 now and wouldn't trade them for any Shimano. And I use to be a huge Shimano fan back a few years ago, until they hiked their prices.

Shimano scares me. I bought 1 Symetre for my wife and now have seen some owners complaining about problems with their Symetres. There seems to be some issues with then binding up. I am hoping this is not going to be an issue for hers. I could have set her up with another President but wanted a reel with a higher LPI retrieve for her frog rod.

I also had a Sidestab 1500,Bought it in 1992 and it finally died last year.I loved that reel.

Pfleuger quality is certainly there.

I'm a 100% Shimano guy,IMO Pluegers feel cheap and ready to fall apart,Diawas are a little better but still will always be a step below Shimanos,Quantums are junk and I'll never own one.
