So, I was fishing this weekend and caught a bunch of bass on a particular setup. One of my Avids broke at the end of last season and I upgraded to the Legend Tournament Finesse Spinning Rod (LTBS68MXF). I paired this up with a Shimano CI4 which I reviewed last summer but now spooled with Fireline Braid. OMG, this setup is so sensitive. This setup alone accounted for 10 out of 13 bass I caught in a heavily pressured weekend (lots of pre and post tournaments on the lake I was on). I fished in areas where I saw other boats come and go with no bass being landed (I watched from a distance and waited for those areas/coves to clear out). I went in and felt the tiniest of bites on a shakey head setup. I was amazed.
This is my new favorite setup. What's yours? One rod / reel/line/ application. The search for one.
hmmm...good question. I would say my G Loomis SMR814C-CB paired with a Abu Garcia Revo Premier and 12 Fluorocarbon Line. This is a great jerkbait set-up.
Tough choice, I like all my setups, however that tennis elbow case made me fish with spinning gear I acquired this strong taste for this set-up which I originally purchased for the foot patrol:
GraphiteLeader Bosco GLBS602ML/Daiwa Revros 2004/6lbs YoZuri Hybrid.
Been using it every week for over a year and a half for practically evreything except for the largest/heaviest baits.
Tennis elbow sucks bigtime ! >
My favorite setup is probably my 7'M Daiwa Zillion/Daiwa Alphas 103/12lb XPS Flourocarbon. I find it a versatile setup fishing shakey heads, tubes, jerkbaits, weightless plastics, dropshot, and small jigs. It's terribly light, sensitive, extremely balanced, and has plenty of power to handle big fish.
Loomis IMX MBR844C, Revo Premier, Seguar InvizX 15lbs test and I love this combo for fishing all types of jigs, especially swim jigs.
Later,
I'm pretty happy with all my gear.
One I really like would be my pre IPC Avid AC62MXF saddled with an Alphas Ito Ai and 8 lb. P-line CXX. This rod is great for topwaters, jerkbaits, short target "sniper" spinnerbaits, even makes a great tight quarter light worming rod.
Another would be my LTBC70MF "Teaser" with a Daiwa Zillion 7.1 and 12 lb. P-line CXX. This rod can literally cover about 85% of my fishing, if needed. The same can be said for next rod up in power for that line, the Sweeper, LTB70MHF.
J Francho,
What do you use your Teaser for? I have the Tube (LTBS70MF - I upgraded my other Avid as well). I talked to a couple techs at St. Croix who said it's pretty much the same rod as the Teaser. They recommended "anything." I have tossing Spinnerbaits with it, topwater, and cranks because that's what I used my old comparable Avid for.
Shimano Stradic CI4 2500 on a Cumara 7'2" and 8lb mono. This and binder of Zoom Trick Worms and Im happy. Take it flats fishing with a 20# leader and a Fluke bait. Would like to have gotten the 6'8" rod though....
G.Loomis MBR842C 7' MedFast Rod w/ Steez 100SHA Reel.
Its not the best looking rod but its the best all around fishing rod.
My favorite combo is a 6.4:1 BPS Pro Qualifier reel on a 7' MXF PQ rod, spooled with 12# YoZuri Hybrid. Like J. Franco's LTB/Zillion, this combo will handle a high percentage of my fishing needs. I also have have a 7.1:1 PQ reel on a 7' MHF Carbonlite rod, spooled with 15# CXX that I like very much.
My favorite combo Spinning is my: Quantum Catalyst PTI-B20 on a old Daiwa D-Force Fiberglass rod with 6# Vicious Flouro. The rod matches the reel perfectly for aesthetics and it's my setup for shallow to medium diving cranks and has really produced for me this year.
Baitcasting: Quantum Energy PT/Cabelas XMLTi/14# Mono
Daiwa Steez 103HA / Dobyns DX703C / 12 Lb. Seaguar InvizX
Baitcasting:
MBR842C/ Core 50MG7/ Yo-Zuri Hybrid #12 (purple smoke)
Spinning:
PR844S/ Stella 2500FD/ Hybrid #6
8-)
My Loomis GLX BCR803's are my favorite rods as I fish C-rigs and plastics quite a bit. I like my Calais 200DC on one of them a lot! Such a versatile reel/setup. But I have a 2010 Premier on one too, and that's a great setup as well. Hard to pick a favorite between them for baitcasting.
Daiwa Sol/Falcon Cara T7 CCB-4-17MR. 7' MS
great lipless cranking setup.
i dont have nicer gear like alot of you guys do , but the setup i use the most is an Abu Garcia Cardinal 801 with 6lb suffix seige on a 6'6" L/F Shimano Clarus. my personal bests were caught on it.
Tough choice.
Rod = G.Loomis MBR844c for worms and such, also works well for frogs in open to sparse cover, or the Quantum Tour PT PT6107F, best dang rod for casting and working Jig's that I have ever owned. To tough to call for I love them both, actually I love all my Loomis and Quantum PT rods, however I could not chose between the two mentioned for there both my favorite that I am taking to the grave with me.
Reel = Quantum Tour PT
Line = Braid was Super Braid till it got discontinued, have not found a replacement yet. Mono= Vicious Ultimate. Flouro = No Favorite, still trying them all one at a time.
My Texas Rig Setup
Shimano Crucial CRC-X610MH
Length: 6' 10
Line: 10-20 lb
Lure: 3/8-3/4
Power: Medium Heavy
Action: Extra Fast
Shimano Calcutta CT100A Gear Ratio: 5:8.1 Weight: 8.8 oz Bearings: 2+1
Berkley Big Game 15# Mean Green
Mustad Denny Brauer Straight Shank Flippin' Hook 4/0
Tru-Tungsten Black 1/4 oz. Bullet Weights
I know it's nothing special but I'm so impressed with the 7' heavy bucoo with a curado 200 e7 and 20# invisx.
I absolutely love my calcutta ct100 te gt and american rodsmith david fritz for cranking. that reel is a d**n winch and smooth as a baby's rump
latley its been my frog rod...im using a powell 7ft hvy with a citica and 50lb power pro
soon im goin to get one of the powell frog rods
but noone around here has the balls to throw frogs in some places
on a really pressured river i fish ive started to skip them under trees others look past and fish them just about everywhere and when its on its on. it doesnt allways work but sunday was a tough day we had rising water and the river was up about 3 or 4 feet and one team brought in a limit...i found three fish and won. the big fish have hardly ever seen this before and i think thats why it works in fact i have caught more big ones in the last 2 weeks than i have in a year on this river......o wait this is a rod thread haha
I'm easy to please. I have a Berkley 5'6" pistol grip that's possibly 15 years old with a plane-jane red Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5500C that I spool every couple of months with fresh Trilene XL 14lb mono. This setup gets more fishing time than several other more expensive rod/reel combo's that I own.
I have been switching a lot of combos up lately, and have a new favorite.
7' MH Okuma C3/Citica E/50 lb braid or 15 lb Big Game (have tried and enjoyed both lines, depending on cover)
I have 2 combos I love both finesse combos.
1-Gloomis MBR782/Daiwa Pixilla spooled with 8lb invisx.
2-Shimano Cumulus/Shimano Core50MG spooled with 10lb invisx.
Kistler 7'8" Magnesium H paired with a Revo S 65# Power Pro
A Frog throwing machine!
My favorite setup is also one of my most versatile.
7' Medium-Heavy Fast St. Croix Legend X. paired with a LH 7.0:1 Quantum Tour Edition PT spooled with 30-lb. Sufix Performance Braid.
I traded up to get this rod as my primary spinnerbait rod. It works great for spinnerbaits and has filled in nicely as my top-water buzzbait or frog rod.
Whets
8-)
Core50mg7/ Kistler Helium LTX 6'6" MH/ yozuri hybrid 12#
The ltx is my shortest rod, but I love it to death. Want to get a 7 footer and put my curado e7 on the 6'6".
Baitcasting
Shimano Cumara 68MF with a Core 50mg7 loaded with 8lb Sunline Sniper.
Spinning
Shimano Crucial DX72M with a Saros F2500 with 6lb Seaguar InvizX.
Spinning: Loomis GLX SHR822S / Pflueger Supreme 8030MG / 8# Sunline Sniper fluorocarbon
Casting: Kistler Helium LTA HE7MHC / Revo Premier / 15# Berkley 100% fluorocarbon
Shimano Curado E7 on a 6'6" Med Ex Fast Shimano Compre rod.
My nicest and favorite combo is a G.Loomis GLX MBR842C with a BPS Carbonlite reel and 10lb mono. For my fishing, a 7' medium-power rod is a great "all-around" tool...
It's not my most expensive or "flashiest" setup, but I'd have to say my favorite combo is my spinnerbait rig.
6'10" MH/MF Quantum Tour Edition PT (PTC6106FKV) paired with a Curado 200e7, spooled with 17# XPS fluoro or 12# Sufix Elite.
To be fair, this would be my favorite combo regardless which reel I use. The rod is just that good. I use this setup for all of my spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, and lipless cranks.
GLX MBR 844c / Shimano Calais 201A
probably my fuego and 7.3mh vendetta with my curado e7 and cumera 6.8 mef .... hard choice but i like fishing toads so thats were the vendetta wins.
QuoteJ Francho,What do you use your Teaser for? I have the Tube (LTBS70MF - I upgraded my other Avid as well). I talked to a couple techs at St. Croix who said it's pretty much the same rod as the Teaser. They recommended "anything." I have tossing Spinnerbaits with it, topwater, and cranks because that's what I used my old comparable Avid for.
Pretty much everything within its rating. It really excels at light contact baits, though it does the sissy size soft swimbaits, vibe baits in weeds, spinners, buzzers, even shallow cover banging cranks very well.
I've played with the tube, while the specs are similar, its not the same blank.
Freshwater: Metanium MG on a Dobyns Champion 734C SH with 15lb Triple Fish Ice Line Fluro, I really want to upgrade to a Extreme 744C but I am so attached to the Champion that I cant part with it.
Saltwater: Shimano Baitrunner 4500 on a 6'6" MH Trevala with 65lb Power Pro, this guy has laid the smack down on some big grouper in the past year or so.
I'm happy with what I have, but my favorite is my Shimano Symetre 1500 FI on a St.Croix PS60. It's my panfish/smallie setup, inline spinners, small craws & small cranks combo.
My Helium LTX 6'10" MH & Curado E7 with 12 lbs gamma. Soft plastics

Interesting. I asked the guys at St. Croix and they told me it was the same blank just wrapped for spinning reels. Two different guys when I was deciding to upgrade told me that. Can you please elaborate how the 2 blanks are not similar. Thanks.
I have been throwing shallow cranks, buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, and topwaters with the Tube.
Curado E7 and falcon bucoo 7'H spooled with #12 hybrid.

Currently it is my Gander Mountain Titanium Casting rod. 6'6" Medium - Fast Action rod with 2009 Revo Premier. The combo is so light. I use 10lb XPS fluorocarbon. I love throwing flukes or caffeine shads with it.
I have 4 GLX casting rods and it seems to be whichever one I'm using at the time. My CR722 with a Daiwa Steez 103HA feels the best in hand. But the MBR783 might just be more versatile and therefore my fav? I also love my MBR842 and my BCR803.

I saw those specs and when I asked the guys at St. Croix, their response was in the construction between spinning and casting gear and with balance points / capabilities of those reels. The guys I talked to were at the HQ/factory location who both said the same blank was used to construct both rods. Just wanted to share my discussion and my impression was the two rods are very close (differences do exist but they said very subtle in overall feel and application). I haven't felt a Teaser so I wouldn't know the feel difference.
Regardless, both are good rods. And, back on track, I am still the happiest with the LTBS68MXF.
BPS spinning reel on a Ugly Stick.
If I lose it I lose it.

Those specs are for the blanks themselves. No way the same blank starts out with a different weight, tip size and butt diameter, just because its for a spinning rod. The spinning rod feels a bit slower and flexes easier. A very good rod, but not made on the same blank as the casting rod. There isn't anything to argue.
Ive noticed a lot of Gloomis guys.
My favorite setup
Ardent XS1000
St Croix LTBC70MF "Teaser"
Power Pro Line
spinning-I like my 6'9" kistler magnesium and stradic 2000fg. It just feels right
casting-I like my mbr784c and curado e7.
I really like my finesse, long distance pitching rod. It's a discontinued G. Loomis BCFR892 matched with a Shimano Curado 201E7 and 15# Seaguar Invisx or Trilene 100% fluorocarbon. This one is really fun to fish with and I'm very accurate and quiet with it.
A recently acquisition is hot on it's heels, though. The Dobyns 735C used for medium weight/moderate cover pitching and matched with Curado 201E7 and 50# Tracer braid and 12# CXX leader.
Currently:
6' M Johnny Morris Signature Series Spinning Rod, Fast Tip
Shimano Stradic 1000FI, 6 lb. test P-Line Floroclear
Sweet, sensitive, backbone to spare - and all purchased on sale or with gift cards so they were affordable!
I'm like JF and Raul and I love all of my combos. My favorite one is the one in my hands when I'm fishing. Doesn't matter if I'm UL fishing with my Okuma/Abu Cardinal or my Lamiglas/Certified Pro Drop shot special/Rapala S6xi, or my Crucial like Catt's with a curado 101D. If it's in my hands I am happiest, because it's the only one in the line up that is going to catch my fish.
It would be a toss up. I love the feel of my 6'6" Browning Midas/Fuego combo. It is exteremely well balanced (just below the foregrip, and light. But I have a soft spot for a modified Abu Garcia 4600 c3 (now a c6) on a 7' St. Croix Premier MHM. The bg round reel casts great, and is just so much fun to wield.

I have 3 dobyns rods but have not had them long enough to call it love
Dobyns 702 with a Core 50. Awesome.
Mine is easily my 6'6" Allstar 785 custom, made by me with the help of flechero, it was my first build. I use it for flippin/pitchin heavy cover with t-rigs and jigs. A Revo S-L is on it spooled with 50lb Power Pro. With this setup I have no issues pulling fish from the thick cover I normally fish. Wouldn't trade it for anything! Caught my PB (avatar pic) with it. Pulled that baby right in!
Favorite right now is my spinning setup, Avid 6'8"MXF with a Stradic CI4 2500. Trying to get better with baitcasters, and of the ones I have, my fave is my Legend Elite 6'6" with a Curado 201E7.
Daiwa Steez on a Mattman Custom GLX Loomis .. it's pretty much a dream to fish with.
St. Croix Avid AVC70MHF with Revo SX and 12# p-line flouro-clear. I love it for spinnerbaits! I'm gonna wear this thing out! LOL
Crankbait: Powell 704CB with Quantum Energy PT 6:3:1, Sufix Fluorocarbon line (10 or 12 lb)
I really like my Falcon Lowrider LFC-5-168S "Angler of the Year" rod paired a Citica 200E and 10# 100% Berkley Flourocarbon. I have used this rod and reel for spinnerbaits, texas rigs, jigs, and square billed crankbaits and it seems to work great with all of them.
I'm sure you guys will Laugh at this..

That's a difficult question because the set up for large mouth vs. small mouth are so different. The set up I use the most, month in and month out is a Lamiglas Certified Pro XFT764 and I just updated them from Revo SX's to Revo Premiers. Spinning: Shimano Symetre 2500 with 14# Trilene XL low-viz green on an All-Star Titanium 6'6" M/F rod. Cheap combo, but it works great. The reel's the smoothest I've ever used and the rod is plenty sensitive for throwing plastic.
Casting: I only have one rig right now, it's even cheaper than my spinning rig. ;D Daiwa ProCaster Rojo 100HL with 17# Trilene XL on a Shimano Sojourn 6'6" M/F rod. I'm impressed with the reel so far, it casts a mile if I need it to but works well for flipping as well. The rod seems decent for such a cheap rod, but right now I'm just using the rod mainly as something I can use while I'm getting my baitcasting mojo back, and once I really get into using my baitcaster again I'll get a better rod and use the Shimano as a spare. My dad has a G.Loomis Bronzeback casting rod that he hasn't taken out of the package since he bought it a couple years ago, and I'm trying to talk him out of it, but so far he doesn't want to sell it.
