Tired of waiting with you. I'm going fishing. Helping a customer of mine set up a new outfit (not Quantum).
Their higher end gear is good. Lower end stuff is junk. I have a couple of 15 year old PTs that I still fish regularly.
I fish a bunch of Quantum Rods & Reels and have been for a really long time.
They are just terrible, I mean they could not possibly be any worse.
Nuts & bolts falling off all over the place.
Springs popping out left & right.
Rod Guides melting in the sun.
Backlashes Every Single Cast.
Foam Grips Bursting into flames.
It's a mess !
And yet, I still manage to catch a few.

Bad marketing on their part.

Thats what I kinda figured I haven't used a quantum since the 90's.Nice fish buddy!!
LOL - They have made a couple reels I really liked, and they have made some pieces of junk I couldn't stand. The problem is, they (good and bad) were often in the same basic line of reels, not high price/low price. Quality control must have been a big issue in the past. Maybe they've resolved it by now, but my share of their reels is at a minimum because of those past issues. Maybe A-Jay is on the Quantum "A-Team" along with KVD and doesn't get "off the shelf" stock models ...jk
Just so you know, @A-Jay is the ONLY guy...other than that
guy, what's his name...K..V..something or other Damm, that
uses the gear.
But they're the outliers. Just remember that.
@A-Jay that wide angle lens makes em look big!
IDK about their reels but their, 7' 10" heavy extra fast Vapor is an awesome punch rod!
I have an energy PT on a KVD signature series rod and I've never had and nuts, bolts, or springs fall off and it has certainly never burst into flames. But, I don't catch fish as big as A-Jay does, so maybe I haven't stressed it hard enough. No complaints here. I'm not running out to get another one but if I found a deal on one I wouldn't be afraid of owning another.
I have four Smokes and absolutely love them
I've never owned a Quantum bait caster, but I've been using nothing but Quantum spinning reels for many years. I've been using them since before I knew who KVD was. In the last 10 years, they've all been Energy's and Smoke models. The only issues I've had are on the reels I use for jerkbaiting where the anti-reverse clutches take a lot of abuse. I've replaced a couple of clutches. I'm sure, unless they make a lot of changes I'm not happy with, my next spinning reels will be Quantum's too.
Every brand has it challenges.
From quality control to customer service, from to durability to reliability.
Been reading threads & posts about the good & bad for just about every rod & reel make & model here now for over 10 years. No ones immune.
I do not believe that Quantum gear is "The Best".
However for what I pay & for what I get - it works for me.
I have & fish gear from several other makers as well.
Most of which is pretty good too.

I am not sure who owns who anymore but at one Brunswick owned Zebco who owned Quantum and sold to Bradley Realestate Corp. Is KVD still sponsored by Quantum? My 1st reel was a Langley 330 Lure Cast, Zebco bought Langley so it's a stretch but I may have owned a Quantum depending on who owns who?
Almost forgot about my Cardinal 4 rear drag spinning made in Sweden when Zebco own that brand.

WC Bradley Co. owns Quantum. They also own Van Staal, Fin Nor, Zebco, Quantum, etc. WC Bradley is based in my hometown. I truly believe there marketing is just subpar as they manufacturer some good quality products. I would buy Quantum products before I would buy a couple other more prominent brands products.
The original PT rods were awesome, I own one and like it. I think they make fine gear.
I remember back around 2000 they were one of the big boys and sponsored many pros. Seemed like they marketed a lot more then and had more visually attractive products.
The first energy PT reel was $160 and bulletproof. For years that’s all I fished
I had the older energy PT spinning and a energy PT casting reels, both looked awesome but fell apart after a year of fishing. Quantum at the time seemed one of the great marketing and innovative companies in the fishing world. After their quality issues started to become known, they just sorted fell out of the mainstream market. All of the ones I had ended up in the dumpster. It was a shame, they were pretty cool.
Quantum pt reels are great. Exo’s are my favorite. Tour mg is awesome too. They are my go to reels. Among many steez, chronarch, 13 ***&kp, Lews bb1 pros. Sv reels past and present. Exos out performs them all for me. Ymmv
I have a KVD cranking rod that is really nice. Only other Quantum I own is the older Energy PT spinning reel like FishTank posted above that I bought for my wife to match the holographic guides on her Avid Pearl spinning rod. She really likes it and it's still functioning well, but it gets used maybe a half dozen times a year. I had one of the blue Tour Edition PT baitcasters, but the big, mean Mexican bass I bought it to catch killed the thing after 2 or 3 days.
I think the lack of marketing combined with past QC issues has made things difficult for them.
I rep for Quantum but don't comment here because of the site rules. I use a lot of the Smoke series rods and reels both baitcasters and spinning. I have had -0- problems with them. I have had some complaints on the KVD cranking rods, nothing a little epoxy didn't fix though.

Agree it’s their marketing. They can’t expect kvd to do all the selling or Gerald swindle for that matter, they need a different approach.
I bought a Quantum Smoke S3 this spring. It was the first Quantum I ever had. I bought a second one a week later. It switches off as my favorite between that and another brand depending on my mood.....lol
I am a big supporter of quantum products, here in the GTA most shops focus on shimano I find. Not many shops big or small carry much quantum products. One or two models that's about it. I've had 7 smoke reels gen 1, 2 and 3 and 4 gen 2 energy reels and loved them all. I'm excited for the new energy reels to come out! I really do wish they had better marketing. Just kinda feels like they want the pros to do everything for then. Also great customer service!!!
I did not like the KVD line of reels too much. But I do love the Exos I have. I have tried the older Smoke and enjoyed using those. I want to pick up the new S3 Smoke to give it a try just haven't yet. I do agree their marketing seems to be subpar to the rest. Looking at ICast they must pay the GMan more than KVD now since Kevin was nowhere in sight at the Quantum booth and GMan was everywhere.
Years ago, I bought two CHEAP Quantum spinning combos for a trip. (Probably paid about $40 for each.)
One of the rods broke in a week and one of the reels crapped out in less than a month (of pretty heavy use.)
That experience soured me on the entire Quantum line. (I had similar experience with very cheap Daiwa reel long ago.)
Sux for the companies, but that's how impressions can be made.
Year later, I fell into a crazy deal for a Smoke 100PT - less than half of MSRP. It is my favorite reel, and I've since bought 3 others.
Now...I'm not entirely sure what price tiers these reels fall for comparison. I think the initial MSRP was $199. I didn't pay over $100 for any of them. They're far better than any other reel that I've bought for under $150. But are they as good or better than other reels that MSRP around $200?....not at all sure.

I remember those days. I bought one of the first snapshot reels they made with the firing pin for one handed operation of a spinning reel.
Still had it up until a few years ago, meanwhile my son purchased the modern version of it for $19 The thing fell apart on his first trip out with it.

FIFY. Their sticks on the other hand, me likes.
Just caught this thread, and was curious if any one knows about the quality of the new Accurists. I have 3 that are 15 plus years old that have been solid. Workhorse reels for me over that time. Was looking to pick up another 100 dollar reel for Christmas and the new accurists are on my list to research.
I used to fish a bunch of Quantums. I was really into the old flashy Energy and Tour PTs because they just looked cool. I had a few of the next gen Energies after those and then the gen 1 Smoke. I also had a bunch of older rods: Tours, Superlites, and gen 1 smokes. I had a few issues with the reels but nothing too major. Overall, the stuff I had was fine. None of it blew me away so I jumped on the Daiwa and Shimano train and got rid of the Quantum stuff. None of their new offerings have really intrigued me though. I feel like their stuff is pretty boring. If they bring back the old Energy color scheme and put it into a nice compact, modern design, I might be lured back.
I use a ton of Quantum. Actually pretty much all I have 18 smoke reels and 28 smoke rods. All work fine.
Never used a Quantum reel. I do have a couple Tour Edition and Superlite rods. Personally I like them.
Never used one, but the GOAT Bill Dance used them so theres that...
Quantum = Lindsey Lohan. A while ago they were hot and everyone wanted them. Now they seem sad and crazy.
The work just fine, just too many QC issues.

I agree, I’ve had one on a frogging rod for the last couple of years and it’s been a dream to cast, and a real workhorse with 50lb braid to muscle largies in. I’ve had lots of different quantum stuff over the years and it’s always done well for me.
I owned two Quantum products back in the late 80s, a baitcaster and a spinning rod, none lasted more than a year so no more Quantum for me never again.
I've had good luck with Quantum myself. Had several of the PT Series and they performed great. Only reason I sold them was because so many newer reels like Lews were smallerlighter. I wonder how many ppl who've had bad luck with Quantum have been the higher end stuff VS the lower end stuff like the Escalade sold at Dicks?
This would have saved one of reels. I guess if I would have looked, it would have been an easy fix. I had this happen just after one year of use.
My 1st low profile was a 1st gen Accurist and I loved it at the time. Mainly because I didn't know any better. I purchased an Energy and later an Energy PT and they fell apart. Much later I picked up the white Accurist PT and it was an OK reel for $100 but not good. I wish I would have kept the original Accurist for sentimental value.
Quantums are Banax reels and so are Okumas. If I wanted a Banax I'd probably buy an Okuma or Tail Walk over a Quantum. It seems like the platforms they are buying are better liked than the Quantum reels. Maybe the new S3 reels will change that.
The Energy PT baitcasters are great reels. I have an older EX500 that is probably 20 years old and it is amazing how many miles of cranking a lipless it has on it. It is nothing close to as smooth as todays reels are, but it has never missed a beat. By far the toughest reel other than an older ABU 5500 that I have ever seen.
Have 6 Energy spining models and would not trade them for anything else
Quantum just needs to pay a bunch of kids to use their gear on YouTube. Problem solved

Or become a site sponsor here on BR????
I have used Quantum reels in the past. I bought my son a Smoke spinning reel a few years ago and he is completely happy with it (and he can be very critical). I own a Quantum spinning reel that I occasionally use, although I prefer my Shimanos. That should be no surprise since I paid more for the Shimanos. My experience with Quantum has been mixed. Not a big fan of the KVD series baitcasters but for the money I liked the old Iron series reels when they first came out. Have not tried any of those in the last 10 years. I generally prefer to spend my money on Shimano or Lew's as those brands seem to perform consistently and hold up well. YMMV
I love my quantum’s, I have the smoke and vapor and both are amazing. Never had s problem with either and I’m pretty hard on them.
I've always been leery of Quantum reels based on feedback I've seen here. It's almost as how Duckett rods are loved and hated by users online. I love testing different brands anyway, even if I become a fanboy certain lines (example: Megabass), I will just have more of that brand/line.
So back to Quantum:
The reel prices have been low online, eBay and forums, so I started testing them out.
Received an Energy PT recently, reel has been great so far. It has been broken in. Caught a few big fish on it ranging from 3-6lbs in slop. Actually used the flippin' switch on it. It's my only reel with one for now. I am trying to catch a Tour MG on the low as well, it also has one.
I have a Monster 301 on it's way for swimbaits. I thought my Lexa 300 was inexpensive, but I won the Monster for $61 bux total, $53 dollars plus shipping NIB. If it arrives by Saturday, I will report back after taking it inshore fishing for it's 1st outing Sunday. There's the potential for big snook, redfish and sea trout catches on it. 23+lbs of drag should be fun. After that, I will pick up a Nova Round Reel, Smoke model and a few rods this year.
Both Okuma and Quantum are Banax reels yet one is liked and the other is hated. Either Okuma uses better platforms from Banax than Quantum or the hate is entirely unwarranted.

Personally - Quantum is owned by the same company that owns Zebco, and I had nothing but issues with the two Zebco reels I had when younger. Maybe they've improved the quality, but my experience left a bad taste in my mouth for Zebco or anything associated with them.
I know nothing about Okuma so I can't say anything about them. I stick with brands I've used in the past that gave me good performance, quality and long-life...Abu, Mitchell, Pflueger, Diawa.
