I Still Hate Braided Line 2024

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

However, after experimenting with PP 50/12

this past fall and winter, I am a believer. I am

fishing PP on a dedicated jig rig and one for

weighted soft plastics.

The advantage is more than just feeling a bite,

its feeling the bottom and every pebble or twig!

When combined with very sensitive rods, the

difference in braid is night and day.

fishing user avatarLucky Craft Man reply :

It's funny, because I used to use braid on a lot of my set-ups, but I have been slowly converting them to Fluorocarbon. Only my Frog, Toad, and Drop Shot set-ups have braid on them now (which is PowerPro.  That is some good braid)

fishing user avatarR520dvx reply :

About the only thing I use braid on is the main line on my carolina rig rod. When you are throwing a c-rig way out on a ledge, you need something sensitive and no stretch to feel the bite and get a good hook set.

fishing user avatarDeb reply :

Y'all can have it!!!

I HATE braid!

Was fishing a tournament on Barren....Greg's C-Rig....

got a bite.....set the hook......SNAP......wanna guess what wrapped braid will do to a loomis tip ?????

Did I mention I HATE braid ?????

Quick....GLoomis Expeditor Service :'( :'( :'(

Sorry bout that rod Baby... :-*...I still hate braid!!!

I switched my Carolina Set-Up mainline to 20# Fluorocarbon. Haven't used it yet and am not sure I will like it, but I didn't like the braid on the ReCoil guides.

fishing user avatarsteezy reply :

I dont like it (braid) but I use it on my frog setup which I also use for throwin anything into heavy slop/moss.  Just cant beat it when you want to be able to quickly haul the fish out of a thick mess.

fishing user avatarPaul Roberts reply :

You'll get used to it. Wind is the biggest hassle for me. But then you only have to add a FC leader and you're back in business.

fishing user avatarGamec0cks5 reply :

Being a 1/2 Saltwater Fisherman and 1/2 Freshwater Fisherman. I love braid!!! ;)

But I do agree there are times where Mono/Flouro are superior. When fishing finesse I always use 8-10lb Trilene XL. I also like to use Segaur Flouro for certain applications. For SW its great around docks w/ Barnicles and oysters. Power Pro is the only braid I'll use. I've tried about every brand out there nothing lasts like PP

fishing user avatarburleytog reply :

Braid isn't worth a crap in rocks.  Thought about trying it on a spinning rod this year, but there's no point.  I'll just end up hating it after one or two trips and throwing it in the trash.

Just like I have with every other braid I've tried.

fishing user avatarUncle Leo reply :

I gave up on braid also. Florocarbon does give you good sensitivity so I switched to that. RW have you tried YoSuri H2O?

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

No, and I don't recall anyone posting anything

about it either.

fishing user avatarRandySBreth reply :

I remember hearing that lots of stick in the mud types hated "that new plastic rod material" when it first came out too- I think it was called graphite. ;D

I'm going to have to agree with the burley man here.Useless around rocks.

fishing user avatarbrushhoggin reply :

what's everbodys deal with power pro? that was the first braid i ever tried a couple years ago and it flat out sucked. did i get a bad spool or something? its so waxy and stiff. gets a little better when its broken in i guess. after that i tried suffix and i gotta tell you it was a dream compared to that PP, nice and limber, but still not very strong. diawa makes nice braided

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

"Braided line" for FISHING??

No Way...that's a fate worse than death!

But I do use a length of Berkley Fireline braid

as a safety-line for my boat trailer

fishing user avatarfishfordollars reply :

I love braid for certain situations. Especially a heavy jig in the hydrilla, a frog, and the main line on my c-rig. Other than that i have switched to XPS floro for a lot of my other set ups.

Of course, I still have to use my "big game" for a few set ups to.

I keep one reel loaded with it for anything I do in the weeds.  Braid does have it's place.

fishing user avatarHammer 4 reply :

RW..try the Diawa Samuri..I use the 55# braid, mainly for flippin, pitchin, and on my swimbait rig. Not sure if I'd use it for other apps..The yozuri ultrasoft works pretty good for the rest.

Btw, I spooled up some 15# ultrasoft, and was pleasently surprised at how well this stuff cast's.  ;)

I think once a person gets past it's disadvantages and annoyances, like the noise it makes in your rod guides, the epic backlashes and slippery knots, they realize it has plenty of advantages and begin to appreciate it as another tool that you can exploit to make you a better fisherman.

fishing user avatarHammer 4 reply :

I don't experience any of these things.. ;)

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

I use all braid on my set ups and it does not backlash(anglers does), knots are stronger than any other line and i love the sound it makes coming through my guides! Especially on the hookset!

fishing user avatartdc rangemaster reply :

Have used braid before and hated it..but i tried 65# Power P ro on my 7'6" Carrrot Stix with Revo STX and i absolutely love it..I feel ever branch underwater with worms and jigs, and the vibration from rattle traps almost numbs ur arms..and the hook set is sure and true..the strength of the line..well I cant break it. If it were less visible in clear water id use nothing else but for weed and wood cover in stained water nothing else compares.

Good for you Roadwarrior, you've seen the light!

I use braid,in Yellow and White...for EVERYTHING!.Worried about fish seeing the braid? Permanent marker and theres your camoflage. Lots of you guys I think, are old school, don't wanna change etc.. The stuff is just better.Sensitivity, much easier hookset,no stretch, lasts much longer, the list goes on and on. Yes,braid is not good around rocks, but thats where you tie on a leader. Even with a leader attached,it's a zillion times better than fluoro or mono or copoly. This nonsense about braid having no stretch and pulling hooks out of a fishes mouth? Can't throw crankbaits? Cmon guys, adjust your drags accordingly and things will be rosy.  It can be used for EVERYTHING with very good results. Exclusive BRAID user since 1994.

Yep, remember when people used to glue their knots before they learned which ones worked and which ones might slip?  Anybody who has used braid extensively should know how difficult it is to pull a serious backlash out.

fishing user avatarWayne P. reply :

Today I have 26 reels with superline on them (spinning, spincast, and baitcasting) for presentations from finesse to matted vegetation.

I use nylon mono and flurocarbon also on other rigs for presentations where they perform better such as lipped cranks, suspending jerks, and soft plastics such as Flukes.

Please keep us updated.

As for the op, I love Power Pro.  Most of my walleye rods are run with braid.  One thing I did find out, is if you are fishing small lead heads, use a leader...I have had itty-bitty walleye jigs get stuck/snagged many times, and pulling on the rig, with braid, is a busted rod waiting to happen.

A small diameter fluoro leader will snap, and I don't have to lose a bunch of braid by cutting my line.

fishing user avatarTheOriginalFishaholic reply :

When I started baitcasting decades ago, I used Cortland chamo braid and I loved it, but when it became difficult to locate in my area I switched over to mono on my baitcasters and started to curse every time I got a backlash because they were more difficult to untangle AND the line easily got damaged far into the spool.

In recent years on recommendation from quite a few anglers I tried PowerPro...broke on several hooksets and I got rid of it ASAP. Now, I'm using Stealth braid on a couple setups one with 50lb. test the other with 30lb. test...the hooksetting is awesome, and I can pull my fish out of some really nasty slop and timber without fear of losing the fish. The other reason I went to braid on my baitcasters is that I fish a lot of swimbaits and large surface baits...I'm less likely to lose a 39 dollar bait on 50lb. test braid than I am with mono. - being a shorebound fisherman, that's important to me...besides the extremely thin diameter of the new braids doesn't seem to bother the fish whatsoever.

I love braids!

...but the reality is that braids are not right for every situation...monos and fluorocarbons have their place too.

fishing user avatarHammer 4 reply :

For those pesky snagged leadheads ect..and you have braid w/o a leader. Wrap a rag, or a small dish towel around your hand to prevent the line cutting you, then wrap the braid a few times around your hand so you can pull on the line, and save your rod.  I pulled a good sized snagged swimbait out of some tullies when I snagged it with a 1/2 oz Jig.. ;)

fishing user avatarkikstand454 reply :

last time i hung my c-rig on the bottom with 20lb p.p. was during a tourney. boater said.. im not msessing up the spot to get it... i said... no problem. i then wrapped the line around the boat cleat and the boat snapped the line like a wet noodle. other times ive done this it has pulled up the entire branch i was hung on. either way........

works for me!

fishing user avatarNEPAfishfinder reply :

I've been using Tuff Line Braid for 4 years and have no desire to switch. Outside of my UL trout setup i use it on my 4 other reels. My home lake has a lot of stumps so the braid has saved me money. I also like how it acts on my baitcasts. In addition i've had few line twists with my spinning gear.

fishing user avatarJosh Bassman reply :

I like braid, and have started to use it for my light stuff also. I just use a 6lbs fc leader. The only thing I don't like is it floats. But the feel is so much better then mono or fc, I don't see myself giving up braid.

fishing user avatarfourbizz reply :

All of my rods except swimbait rods have Sufix Performance Braid. I cannot fish a jig or dropshot without a braided mainline anymore.  Mono is like wearing a condom. Sure, you'll get the job done, but it just doesnt feel as good.

You shouldn't need to respool until you've cut off enough to impact casting distance.

there are people that have the same braid on their reels for over 3 years !!!

i use braid for slop fishing with frogs ect. also i will use it when toothy critters are present so i have a little better chance not getting bit off. i also feel backlashes are waaaaaaay fewer and far between. it is also easier to remove backlashes with braid in my opinion. power pro is the ONLY way to go with the braid also!

i change mine about once a year.

and by change i mean i tie one end to the fence.... walk the spool out... cut it... walk back over ... and tie the used part back to the spool and reel it in.

i get about two years out of a spool of 15lb power pro.

pretty cost effective eh?

fishing user avatarWayne P. reply :

How long with braid last? I don't know. I was fishing in Florida in early 2004, went by the Bass Pro Shops in Orlando and saw the gold color Stren Superbraid 30# in stock. I got a spool of it so I could see it better than the green color. I'm still using it. I may have to replace it sometime this year depending on any break-offs or re-ties. It has faded some, but is still as good as when I started using it after several thousand bass caught.

powerpro is outdated and no longer one of the top braids.fireline braid and diawa samurai are the 2 best braids made imho.i prefer the fireline to the diawa because it has more body to it.

this year i am not fishing any braid because i'm doing an experiment.don't ask because i won't tell.

i spooled up my abu cardinal 801 with 15/4 power pro and hated it. wind knots left and right. i wont even fish that setup anymore untill i get out and get some other line.

the few successful casts i made felt great though. i would like to try it on my baitcasters but im still doubting that its easier to pick out a backlash with braid than mono...

fishing user avatardodgeguy reply :

you don't pick it out.you push your thumb against the spool with the drag tight and reel against it.this reverses the loops.you then push the cast button and pull the line of until it binds again.you repeat until it comes out.braid is far easier to get a backlash out of using this method.i haven't had to cut one out in years.
