Curado I noisy retrieve(video added) 2024

fishing user avatarcddan reply :

https://youtu.be/EvYE91VVhuUMy curado I makes an irritating noise while retrieving. Like the spool is rubbing or something. I've completely cleaned it bearings and all. It functions perfectly but makes noise during retrieve. Anyone having the same issue or know any fix?

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

It's a well documented issue. A light coating of oil on the brake drum should fix it.

fishing user avatarPoolshark reply :

Noise on the retrieve and not the cast?  One of mine started doing that. I sent to have it cleaned and lubed and it came back quiet. One of mine started a year after I bought it. The other one is still quiet.

Also, in addition to that, as said above, keep the break drum oiled every 5 outings or so. This will keep it quiet on the cast.

fishing user avatarOnthePotomac reply :

Pinion gear and drive gear lubrication possibility, or they are not meshing properly.  Did you remove the plastic pinion yoke and put it back upside down?

I'll check the pinion yoke to be sure. I didn't realize it could go upside down but I'll check it. Also in response to other replies the brake drum is oiled good.

The yoke seems to only go in one way

Check to make sure that the line is not overfilled and rubbing against anything.

It does sound that way but I've had the reel apart and cleaned several times. I fish the reel a lot. It casts great. It free spools well too. It seems to me it may be the X ship bearing

I think you have a bad bearing.

Nice bass pic!...Yeah I took it apart and only ran the spool shaft on the pinion. Nothing else  and the noise was still there. I believe it's the x-ship bearing supporting the pinion. Disappointing. Hopefully that's right. Found it online for 6.97 plus shipping. Gonna try to get one and go from there. Not sure how that could fail. Anyone else have this issue let me know. Thanks. I'll post back in a week if that's it

fishing user avatarJDNKC reply :

If you need to change bearings upgrade to the Boca ceramic bearings.  I have done this on all my reels.  Amazing!

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

No need for a ceramic bearing in that spot. If you flush the bearing and spin it you'll know if it's bad. Soak it in gear oil to relubricate it. What did you do with the AR clutch?

I washed ARbearing with soapy water dried overnight and lightly oiled with qtip and oil

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

The degree varies but I see this more often than not when the gobs of factory grease are cleaned out. I have yet to pin it down to any one thing. I'm playing with one on the bench right now.

Does it exhibit the same symptoms as what I've presented?

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

In that there is sound as the spool turns on retrieve , yes. Not as loud as your video but there's distortion and background noise so it's hard to tell.

Why not just call Shimano support and tell them the problem?

Good idea. Thank you for the number

fishing user avatarcddan reply :

Called Shimano they were very helpful. The sent me a new bass boat for my troubles. Just kidding. I received new bearing (x-ship bearing). It seems different. More slots in it I assume to give it more access to lubrication. It did the trick. God forbid the reel ever makes a strange noise again I'll loose my lid. Lmao.

fishing user avatarcddan reply :

Well unfortunately the noise has returned. Gonna flush the drive bearing see if that helps but it seems the new bearing became that noisy again by my second outing. I'm thinking water may be getting to it via the thumbar

Sorry to necro this thread but I'm having near identical issues with my Curado 70. Just got it in February and it worked great the first few times I used it (didn't really have it out until recently since weather want very cooperative) but now it is producing that Same sound. I tried doing a basic clean and lube since I did fish in rain a few days but it did not resolve the issue.

DVT, were you able to find anything with the reels you had by chance?

Your reel is still under warranty.

fishing user avatarTX-Deluxe reply :

Random question. Did you mess with brakes a couple times by removing the side plate a couple times?

I had a Citica fail within a month.

fishing user avatarAcerty reply :

Yeah I  have an email in with shimano, I just figured I would check if anyone found anything as well since it seemed like there was more than a few people experiencing this.

TX- no, I only opened it once when I got it to make sure two brakes were on already.

Mine Curado 70 did this last week while I was fishing in the rain with a spool of braid that also absorbed a lot of water. It was the lower pinion support bearing, the one that's in the frame. I removed the bearing, removed the shields with a pin, cleaned it in acetone and lubed with Shimano drag grease. The sound is gone, it's a little stiff feeling in the handle, but it should loosen up as the grease is worked in.

Maybe due to lack of time while at work. Sometimes it nice to communicate by writing. Kinda like this thread.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Email is an ineffective way to communicate with customer service.  Because they're on the west coast, they're open later, if that helps.  Their hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday - Friday Pacific Standard Time. So, that would be 11 - 7:30 EST.

Point well made. I had hoped another serious angler may have encountered the problem and resolved it or possibly found it was an engineering issue that can't be resolved. The reels are expensive and we all just want to make sure we purchase a reel that can be maintained for extended use. The x-ship bearing may be flawed or the reel may be flawed to the point the issue cannot be resolved. To repurchase another or get a replacement would just be an exercise in futility. The rest of the reel works well. Good design. The x-ship bearing or placement or some design aspects may be flawed. I don't know if the company will tell you.

fishing user avatarcddan reply :

Update: I purchased a x-ship pinion bearing it also became rough after 2nd outing. My new solution which seems to work after 3 pitches and three yard casts is to remove the bearing and run without it. The reel feels and sounds great. Until I fish with it I can't be sure but so far it works really great. I'll fish it this weekend.

It did run smoothly this way but eventually I could hear subtle pinion chatter clicks I assume. So this is not a solution imo. My friend bought a 70 and it after limited freshwater use is beginning to show the same signs. We're thinking a corrosion resistant bearing or ceramic bearing may be a good solution.. Gonna try sometime to open the existing bearing when I figure out how

Tens of thousands of these sold to happy customers, and these two with the same issue?  Take them back.

fishing user avatarcddan reply :

My friends is new enough to return mine is not. I've tried three different bearings all the same results. Frustrating to say the least. I have found that many others on different forums are having the same issue but haven't yet found the solution myself

fishing user avatarfishballer06 reply :

I fished my I series Curado 201 for a 10 day trip to Canada two years ago and it rained 9 out of those 10 days and I was on the water 8+ hours each day. I had to lube the brake drum twice while I was up there, but my Curado never let me down. I assure you this is not a common issue.

fishing user avatar22hertz reply :

In the video it sounds like the spool is rubbing against the frame.

When cleaning the reel do you clean the area where the spool is positioned?

Do you see any rub marks on the spool or frame?

Could the spool axle be bent possibly?

Try putting the spool on a table, rolling it slowly keep an eye on the axle. Does either side wobble at all?

Do you put oil in the pinion? These reels have tight tolerances so anything added may misalign the spool.

I have the same reel with 2 years of use without this problem. It would be nice to know the issue and solution if this ever happens to mine or others' reels.

If this is common enough where multiple people are experiencing this problem we need to get the bottom of the source of the problem.

For now I wouldn't throw any more parts at the reel. If a bearing is suspected to be bad a drop of oil should quiet it enough to pinpoint it as a bad bearing.

fishing user avatarnameiztaken reply :

Take the spool out (with the x-ship bearing installed) and see if the sound still happens.

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

fishing user avatarWilddiver3 reply :

My 200i's both make that noise. It's the x-ship bearing and while I haven't replaced it yet, my fix will be upgrading that bearing. I have packed it with grease as a temp fix several times.

Once I'm done fishing them on a trip, I can open the handle side and you can see everything is soaked with water. The drags are soaking wet etc. They look like you dunked them overboard. These reels have an issue but you have to fish them hard for it to show itself. Casting distance never degrades, however, which is why I continue to use them.

I should elaborate on this as I quickly typed it on my phone. After removing the shields on the bearing in question, I noticed hardly any grease inside. After soaking it in acetone, the bearing barely spun with a little bit of acetone still inside of it. After a few spins and the acetone gone/evaporated. The bearing hardly spun at all, unlike when I clean my spool bearings in acetone, those things will spin forever. Rolling the pinion bearing with my finger while it was on the tip of a pencil, it did not feel rough - but of course it did not spin freely like it should considering it has just been cleaned in acetone. I packed it with grease, put back on the shields and the reel is quiet. However, I believe this is just a temporary fix and that the bearing itself is damaged, I have yet to order a new one. I can update after some long time use with the reel as it is now if I remember to.

It is also worth noting that I have used my Curado 70(and all my reels) many times in the rain especially on the river, rising water gets the smallies feeding up, like the recent warm spring rain when my reel starting making noise.

@cddan I got your PM but I'll just reply here. To remove the shields from the bearing, use a pin or fish hook to pry the retainer clip from the groove in sits in under the outer edge of the bearing itself. You could probably find a nice video on youtube.

Does anyone have a definitive answer as to how the bearing is going bad?

I appreciate you taking the time to respond. Good information. I've done the same but the bearing is still noisy. I believe it's no good. I believe the water comes in from the thumbar. There's a slot there that's usually covered in other reels when you press the thumbar down on the right side of frame on a right hand reel.

Imo it's through the thumbar slot. It gets water to the bearing and with use and allowed to set in the bearing degrades the bearings. I haven't figured out the fix although I've greased the heck out of the reel inside in that area. Can't say that'll do it but it may help fend off the water.

How much water are we talking, and is it affecting anything else? I don't have my reel with me atm, so I'm trying to find a picture of the slot. Wondering if it can be plugged with something.

I've only noticed a small amount but if it gets in a bearing its not good. My reel is in the car as well i can't get a pic to you right now. The slot is about a half inch. Inside the side plate there's a channel built in I assume to catch the water. I'm sure it just goes under it where it meets the frame (not tight enough) there is a drain port there as well but while fishing it likely doesn't drain.

A sure fire fix would be great to come across. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

fishing user avatarcddan reply :

I ran it again tonight without the bearing it went well but it's not a fix. Standard reels are basically that way. Last night I snagged and just pulled to free it. Hard on 50 lb braid. Afterwards it kinda clicked like the pinion was torqued wrong. It probably has a larger inside diameter than normal allowing more play on the spool shaft. Kinda needs that bearing for full powered functionality. Otherwise it was smooth tonight without the bearing but unfortunately still not tested on a reasonable sized fish. I did feel as though the main drive bearing may have also gotten a splash of water because I could faintly feel it's inconsistency. I've gotten water in other reel bearings(corrosion resistant) and you feel a faint rough spot so I made the assumption.

fishing user avatarPoolshark reply :

It's possible that you making your reel worse. Send it to shimano, dvt or take it to an authorized repair shop. That's what I would do.

I wouldn't fish a reel without all of its parts in place. It is not engineered to be used that way and you can easily create more of a problem than you began with.

Now, with that said I haven't had any "problems" that haven't been remedied by normal maintenance. Not in any of my curados. They get yearly cleanings, occasional oil and they are like new.

fishing user avatarcddan reply :

True to the point poolshark. They're good reels but I'd be hesitant to buy another.
