Well tt did a review check it out... look alot like an mg7 but i like the white color, but no 6.2.1 ratio and price is at 300.00 bucks up 30.00 bucks from last year and said will be here soon after new years. ;D..
http://www.tackletour.com/reviewshimanochronarchdpreview.html
Yeah, I read about it on TT. Too boring...it's 2009! It looks very uninspiring. Even anodizing the spool black instead of gold would be a major improvement. I know I'm being petty, but we are talking about a $300 fishing reel. I'd pay the extra $50 for the Core without question.
I must have one of those.
I like the looks of it.
I'm sick of rods and reels that look like they were designed by drag queens.

X2
If I wanted a reel that looked like a Core, I would buy the Core.

Not me. I'd pick the Honda s2000 over the Honda Accord; I just like agressive looking things I guess.
I like the look of this years Chronarchs. I'll probably buy the Chronarch 101B sometime next year.
I don't care what anyone thinks...I think this reel looks pretty awesome. I've been waiting for Shimano to release a new reel that includes all of their newest technology in a full aluminum frame/side plate...and most importantly...DIDN'T HAVE ANY PLAY IN THE HANDLE!
That's what drove me nuts about the Curado E...the back play in the handle and the lack of bearings in the knobs. Retrieves didn't feel as smooth as my Revo STX and had tons of back play.
It looks just like a Core but white. I like the look, but I'm still not going to spend that much on a reel anytime soon.
Quotehad tons of back play.
: :-X
It does have a lot of back play and I actually returned it for a Revo STX. If you don't notice it or you deny that it's even there...I don't know what to tell you :/
I am with Natural here. I like my stuff to be flashy 8-) The white and gold isn't cutting it. We need some colors to our reels. Pretty cool Waltons Pond got a little advertisement. BTW, its a tackle shop in San Leandro, Ca. Never been there, but its my uncles local tackle shop. I support my locals over at Hook Line & Sinker.

Flashy may be a strong word; I'd consider the Ito 103m 'flashy', but the red and black Core is mean. Great looking reel. I guess the old gold spool that has been standard for 30yrs is what makes me frown. The new Citica looks awesome, and I guess the only difference is the black anodized spool and black handle/dragstar. I'm only nitpicking because excellent performance is a given with a $300 reel.
The reel is really nice. I actually like the white colour.
I sincerely hope 09' holds a 6.X:1, $200ish reel for Shimano. I thought the new Chronarch was going to be it.....
The older Pearl Chronarch's were nice looking reels. This appears similar in appearance. Interesting that they offer a 7.. and 5.. gear ratio but nothing inbetween.
No left hand 5.... I was hoping that the chronarch would have a 101D5, since the curado 200E5 is not out yet... I f it will ever be.
I'm calling BS on Shimano now.
Another reel with no "regular speed" option....
Another reel built on an existing body type....
Another reel with mostly existing parts...
This is the Core's "citica"
I hope it's as short lived and the CU and CI D's were. Hey Shimano- "D" stands for doomed! Build something as good as you took from the lineup.... > or your faithful following will be looking at Daiwa's 09' offerings. :-/
Maybe I should have said "Thank you Shimano" for protecting my discretionary income, since there is absolutely ZERO chance of me buying that. I should have no trouble buying rod blanks this year!

Already have 5 of the 50MG's... don't really need a 6th. I was just hoping that there would be something original coming out... you know like they used to do, when all the "new" reels were new?
Seems like lately they make a new reel then a number of models with a bearing or 2 less and call it new. They don't need a "citica" for every decent reel.
It's just disappointing.

The Curado E does have bearings in the handle knobs.
The Natural-
The reel was going to be black and white like a Storm Trooper from Star Wars. The sample looked...well not that great so it changed. I was excitied about the black and white until I saw it. The finished product looks much better.
Fletchero-
We have always used similar tooling and common parts. making everything different is just a pain. We already have a ton of parts and making space for 1000 more in not easy. Production is tougher, everything becomes more difficult. Using the same parts and similar tooling makes for easier production and quicker fill rates. I am not trying to make you guys buy the reel but I want you to understand why we do what we do.
Look at car companies. Toyota and Lexus for example use similar tooling for their chassis. Same parts, same engines, etc. GM is even worse for that. Generic Motors uses all the same stuff for all the vehicles. Its easier to produce and increases production.
The price increase...well you can thank the weak dollar compared to the Yen. I'm pretty sure this is why a competitor of ours is raising their prices too.
I know Keith, but for anyone else that is looking for a reel at this
pricing point, it's a no brainer. Otherwise I agree: Why offer a retread
at a higher price without pizazz? I'm thinking, buy the CH50MG on sale
or step up to the Core.

I was excited to see that shimano has made an aluminum version of the Core until I saw the price.
I paid less than that for my core brand new.
Hopefully the auction sites will place the reel in the price range that it should be.

Flashy like this ?
Raul, I LOVE THAT REEL. I personally think it is the coolest looking reel ever made. Expensive as all get out. Man, I will own one of them some day. Soon I hope.

RW,
I agree with that and I do have both.
Quotefor anyone else that is looking for a reel at thispricing point, it's a no brainer.
I don't know about that one... I would buy another Curado E over the new chronarch.
Bantam,
Thanks for the info.... I know that you have to use some of the same stuff but my point is that the "original" stuff is what is so well received. Look at the Curado E's and Core... they are new and at least were more original... and they are the talk. And I bet they sell way better than the "dumb down models" - pardon the expression.
Well the CH50MG that everyone loves was built on the Curado 100B tooling. It was not "original" in design. The Core is the MG version of the Chronarch D. We built the Core first unfortunately. Maybe this took some of the new feeling away from the Chronarch for you. I understand that you wanted to see something new as far as design. This is an improvement over the Chronarch B. Its smaller and much lighter and very refined. Personally I like it and I was not happy about giving back by prototype after field testing :'(
We have a bunch of new products coming next year. I think you will be excited at that time if the Chronarch D does not do it for you.

The "no brainer" I was talking about is to buy the CH50MG, not the new Chronarch.

You should see one with the drag star and tension knob cap anodized in caramel red, it looks even cooler.
Not as flashy but I 've got 3 of these babies.

At least the 50MG was light! I guess I reacted a little too strongly- I just had really high hopes. I'm sure it's just me but I don't see the need for another $200+ that weight 7 1/2+ oz and holds about the same line as the others in that class. Seems like the Curado E fills everything in that space and does so for less $. No?
I still have high hopes and will wait to see what comes out later in 09'. I should have a few nice new rods to put them on by then. :
I hope that the color they chose wasn 't the one the old Chronarch had -----> Fugly !!!
QuoteI hope that the color they chose wasn 't the one the old Chronarch had -----> Fugly !!!
I have one and would describe the color in a complimentary way as
"pearl".
I understand what you are saying. We tried to get the cost down but we are just getting hammered by the Dollar to Yen exchange right now. We need to make our margains and so do the dealers. The Chronarch has always been more than the Curado. This current economy, rising cost of raw materials and a whole bunch of other things is making it tougher and tougher to have lower prices on products. Look at the price of cars compared to 10 or even 5 years ago!
This is still a 100 size reel compared to the Curado. Its all metal frame and side plates. I agree that the Curado fits the bill in many aspects. The price is right too. The Chronarch is just another option in the line up.
This is always the case with new products. Not everyone is going to be happy with what we offer. People are still ticked that we stopped making the Curado B. In a perfect world things would be different I suppose. I want a Calais 100A-MG and 6.2:1 gears. I'll never see one unfortunately. I wish we could build everything with every option available, we just can't. I wish we could allow special orders but that will never happen.
Bantam1,
The guys on this thread are all big fans. I hope you don't take offense.
So far, I don't think anyone who has posted actually "needs" a new reel,
but for some reason seem to buy them anyhow and all the time!
We don't need a "good reason", just any excuse to get a new one.
The new Chronarch is just hard to justify even for Shimano fanatics,
but I'm sure we will continue to think about getting one, "just because."
8-)
it isn't flashy, but i'm sure it performs like a beaut.
but personally, i wouldn't hold any "pride of ownership" if i bought that reel. And personally, when i buy a reel, 20% goes into hope for performance and 80% goes into pride of ownership : ;D
a branching of symptoms of the BaitMonkey Syndrome perhaps? :
but i guess that doesn't apply to when i bought my Quantum PTi-A spinning reel... i put 100% into performance cause i needed a spinning reel that would last me through college and beyond.

I sent him a PM earlier saying exactly that. I do have a couple reels worth of cash set aside for when "my" next reel is produced. ...lol
Question...does this reel, for sure, get rid of the back play that the Core has?
QuoteQuestion...does this reel, for sure, get rid of the back play that the Core has?
I don't understand what the big deal about 1/16-3/32" of backplay is.
Nice paint finish, aluminum sideplates, high speed. All that and only $100 more than the Revo STX.
QuoteI don't understand what the big deal about 1/16-3/32" of backplay is.
Yeah I didn't notice it on my Curado e7 until I heard about it and started looking for it. It is a big problem and I have returned the reel : :
Well, I think the Chronarch D looks sweet and it's probably going to be a real performer. I already have some money set aside for it.
I did not take offense to any of this. I just wanted to let you guys know why we do what we do and how prices are determined. I do take pride in our products and I believe in them 100%. I bleed Shimano and will for a long, long time. I know what our products are capable of and this is why I stand up for them so much. I was a little disappointed when i saw negative comments about the reel. I think its cool...
There should be no play or a very minimal amount. I don't know how people even notice that when fishing. I never try to force the back play either which I think happens more than not. Its funny as it was never an issue or a complaint until the internet came to be so powerful : The prototype I used had zero play that I noticed. I have not used a production reel because I do not have one yet. I like my Cores too much to fish the "heavy" Chronarch D ;D
QuoteThere should be no play or a very minimal amount. I don't know how people even notice that when fishing.
The amount of "backplay" in shimano reels has 0 effect on their fishability (is that even a word?).
I'd love to be able to afford these high dollar reels, but I'm stuck with my citica's for a good long while.
I understand that the back play does not effect the performance of the reel...I'm just a really picky person when it comes down to things like that. And to be honest I didn't notice the play the first couple times that I fished the reel because I was using spinner baits, but after I had re-spooled the reel and tied down the line to the cast control knob I noticed a wobble in the handle...
I'm not saying that the back play will reduce the performance of the reel...I'm just REALLY REALLY picky. None of my Abu reels have any back play at all, which is why I returned the Curado E.
My previous comment not withstanding, the new Chronarch is a really appealing reel to me. I like color, the construction, etc. It appeals to me much more than the Curado E. It's perfect. Except for the price. That is the one thing that would keep me from considering it.
That's pretty much what I've been thinking Micro, luckily I have a bunch of VISA gift cards laying around :-X
