Best Fast Baitcasting Reel? 2025

fishing user avatartcbass reply :

I have 2 Revo Rockets and love them. However, they aren't cheap. My friend is looking for a fast baitcastjng reel. Something 8:1 ratio or faster. He's willing to pay the Revo price but I said the Revo has been out for awhile. There might be other speed reels that are better now.

Are there any ones that are just as fast and good or is the Revo the best speed reel out there?

fishing user avatarj bab reply :

Well a lot of that is going to come down to personal opinon.

As far as options go, there are a lot of reels out now with 8:1 gear ratios.

Lews BB1 Pro & Tournament MB are great options. The Daiwa Tatula CT & Type-R's are awesome and come in 8:1. TW has the Zillion on sale right now and it has a 9:1 option.

The list goes on... Pick your favorite brand.

Shimano Japan Exsence DC reel is to offer the best casting performance with braided lines. It features the most advanced DC digital control brake system to date, 8.0:1 fast gear system, saltwater fine components, and X-SHIP gear system to make it great bait caster.

The best for the price in JDM at 8.0:1.

The fast reel I use is a modified 4600c3 with all bearings and 31 ipt.

What are you looking to achieve?

Josh

Nothing special. Just like the fast retrieve.

For kicks I tried running squarebills on my jerkbait setup (31ipt).

I wore out really fast, and I'm not a weak guy.

That's why I figured you were doing something special with this.  What kind of IPT rating do those 8:1 and 9:1 reels have?

Regards,

Josh

Interesting, I use 32 IPT reel all of the time and it feels perfectly fine.

fishing user avatarJosh Smith reply :

Guess it's what you're used to.  I grew up with a 4.7:1 Ambassadeur (after Dad got a new Quantum, that is; I got his Ambassadeur.)  Before that, I was using an ultralight setup and a Bronson reel on an ancient Cherrywood rod, both left to me by my grandfather.  The Bronson was 3.8:1 but the massive spool probably brought the IPT up a bit.

For reference, I could bench 300 before I blew my shoulder, and last I could leg press was around 1,000lbs.  That's been a number of years, but I'm sure some of it's stayed with me.

Regards,

Josh

BPS titanium is a cheaper option in an 8:1:1

I looked around on Ebay for a few minutes and though the Rocket has an MSRP of $299.99 you can find it for around $200. The Daiwa Zillion also has a 8:1 and 9:1 gear ratio option for $200.

Up to $300.

Probably my friends main and only reel. So spending a decent amount for this reel is ok.

He he bought a budget Bass Pro reel last year and it was a pos from the start and defective but he didn't send it back for a replacement.

fishing user avatarDwight Hottle reply :

Escence DC from Digitaka for $270.39. None of the others mentioned are DC.

Well TW has the Zillion on sale for $100 off right now... I'd go with that out of those with that budget!

fishing user avatarEvan K reply :

I just got my Tatula Type R and caught a number of fish with it. I had a hard time believing any reel could equal the Lews Tournament MB in my estimation but I am beyond satisfied with the Tatula. It's amazingly solid, smooth, brakes are super effective and easy to dial in. And you can get them on ebay for $120 new.

fishing user avatarDye99 reply :

As already mentioned there is the Zillons that are on sale over at TW...

Ive got three Revo Rockets. I LOVE them...

Can't go wrong with a tournament Pro!

Second that.

fishing user avatarSouth FLA reply :

Just get the Tatula Type R from Ebay for $120 in your desired gear ratio, don't look back. If you budget is $300 that leaves you some money left over to get a nice rod. I have at least tried or even owned the others mentioned. By the way I have the Zillion TWS and I would not be able to justify what its "superior" when it comes to casting, smoothness and drag, but if you want to give another $50 to Daiwa that's your choice.  You'll wonder why you paid some much more for the Rockets, unless that 37" per turn was super critical. :P

It's not even a bang for buck issue!  If you don't like the Type R  I will buy it from you at a slight discount ($15 off)! Just make sure you keep original box and it cost you $15 to try it out.

What are ya'll throwing with these super high speed reels? If I were to only have one reel it wouldn't be an 8+ gear ratio

Jigs. It's to take up the slack. For just steady retrieve I don't think I'd want an 8.1:1, I'd be to prone to over crank it. Some people can though (Aaron Martens).

fishing user avatarIAY reply :

For 300 dollars, nothing comes close to Metanium XG. I would pick it over the Exsence DC but that is my close 2nd. I also had IP79, and have used J-Dream 7.9, but they did not feel nearly as good in my hand(although still very very good).

fishing user avatartcbass reply :

Thx guys. He went with the Zillion.

Top water, Cranks/spinner baits/ and Jigs...

Having the ability to to ski fish back, cover more water with less work and take up slack is a great thing. Especially when I spend at least 16-20 hours a week on the water.
