Best knot for attaching a leader to braid 2025

fishing user avatarsteezy reply :

What is the best knot for attaching a leader to braid ?

fishing user avatarpiscicidal reply :

I prefer the Albright knot, if the leader material is bigger in diameter (for me, it usually is).  Never had one fail, and very easy to tie.

x2 this knot also passes through guides nicely

fishing user avatarnew2BC4bass reply :

Alberto.  Modified Albright.

fishing user avatarB-Dozer reply :

I fly fish also, so I have used the blood knot. but for me the Albright is easier and works well. Never had either fail.

fishing user avatarSoFlaBassAddict reply :

Alberto knot.  I've never broken one.  The first time I used it I was really surprised at the knot strength.  It's also a very small profile knot.

fishing user avatarJig Man reply :

Alberto's knot is the only one that has never failed for me.  I got the tip from Avid here on this forum.

fishing user avatarBrianinMD reply :

Not to hi-jack this thread but it this may be of use to other newbies to the alberto knot.

I have tried it with 20lb braid to both a 10lb and 12lb flouro leader. Seem to have a problem with the knot breaking. All I get back is the frayed end of the braid. This is happening on hooksets and when the lure is stuck. I know it has to be something I am doing wrong but can't figure it out. Anyone have any thoughts?

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

How many wraps? I use ten up, and ten back on 15# Power Pro. Also, make sure the "rabbit" goes back through the loop on the side it came through. I've had leaders snap, and even mainline, but never had a proper Alberto fail.

:)

Doh. I use 5 up and 5 down and never had it fail.

Same here. I have had the Alberto fail because I was tying it wrong by not coming back out the same hole. After I started tying it right it's been great.

Make sure you have plenty of tag end on both lines so you can pull all four tight at the same time.

I think the issue here might be the smaller diameter of the 10-12lb flouro leader that you are using. Just a guess here...but perhaps the 180 bend on the leader is being pinched down to such a small radius that it becomes a stress concentrator (kinked). If that kink breaks, you are going to get back a little a little club of braid with a frayed tag end.  Sounds like what you are describing...

As I mentioned above...I use this knot if the leader diameter is large: ~0.50mm diameter (i.e. 30lb flouro leader material).  On applications I need smaller diameter flouro (i.e. finesse conditions) I just go straight flouro- mainly because I'm nervous about hooking a big fish with such a small amount of shock material.

fishing user avatarSoFlaBassAddict reply :

I generally use 30 or 40 pound braid tied to either 12 or 14 pound fluoro.  5 wraps each way (10 total) has never failed me.  I've also done it plenty of times with 20 pound braid and 12lb fluoro for my drop shot rod.  Never had a problem with that.  You've got to make sure you tie the knot properly though.I've used the same knot offshore with larger line, just giving it a few more wraps.  Take your time when you cinch it down so the wraps all lay in next to each other properly.  Like mentioned, you need to have the tag end of the line your wrapping with exit in same way as the standing end.  It will fail if you finish it in the opposite direction.  If you tie it right you can clip the tag ends all the way down to the knot.

fishing user avatarrubba bubba reply :

I exclusively use it with 10 and 8lbs fluoro with no problems. I would suggest trying different fluoro for his leader. Not sure what he is using but hopefully it's not Vanish....

fishing user avatarSoFlaBassAddict reply :

I initially tried it with Vicious fluoro.  That stuff was awful.  Broke no matter what.  I lost a lot of tungsten using that junk.  Changed brands and I was in business.

fishing user avatarRand reply :

What about the blood knot? Anyone use it?

Rand

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

I use a floro leader offshore 20# or 20# mono with 40# leader, alberto works very nice.  I was using seagur, but switched to vanish with zero complaints.  I generally use a swivel and 18" mono leader but will try floro and alberto in freshwater to see if there is a difference.

Some pelagic species will hit a swivel as readily as lure or bait, line to line can make the difference out there.

Not since I switched to the Alberto.  It's a good knot and works, it's just the Alberto is better.  imo, that is.

fishing user avatarJosh Bassman reply :

I use a double uni, and never have any problems. I only use it with light line (10 lbs braid, 6 lbs floro). Usually, the floro breaks before the knot.

It's easy to tie and runs through the guides good.

X2  I use 12# Yozuri H2O Fluoro with 30# braid on all my casting outfits except my slop rod.  4 wraps with the braid, 3 wraps with the H2O, plenty of saliva and have never had a knot fail.  Easy to tie and passes through the guides better than any other knot I've tried.

8-)

fishing user avatarOneUp reply :

I could never seem to get the Alberto knot to cinch down right, so I went back to the J-knot.

fishing user avatarRandySBreth reply :

I can only get the superlines that have more "body" to them to do a good blood knot - Fireline and PowerPro.

Slicker braids like original Spiderwire and newer ones like Suffix are too slick, and a blood knot is darn near impossible to tie well so I use back-to-back Uni or the Alberto. Mostly the Uni.

fishing user avatarAlpster reply :

The best leader knot tyou can tie is "opposing nail knots" very easy to tie with a knot tying tool. Nearly impossible without the tool. Difference in line diameter does not matter and you cant break the knot. I have broken the line on both sides, but never had a knot failure. Excellent through the guides as well. Try it!

This is the tool..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5b5b_32Cexs

It talks about fly line, but it works for any leader connection.

fishing user avatartjc76 reply :

I use the uni to uni knot, aka double uni.  5 wraps around 12# trilene, 8 wraps around 30# powerpro.

I find it to be a very reliable knot.

I had seen some drawings of nail knots before (using a nail, of course!). They always looked too complicated for me to accomplish. I thank you for the link. This tool definitely will allow me to tie a knot faster than the Alberto. Don't know if it will be as strong, but I will take you at your word. Now I need to locate one of those tools. :)

I have one of those tools cause I fly fish, but a piece of heat-shrink tube will also work in a pinch.

I don't have any issues with 15# Power Pro and leader down to 4#.  In fact, along with bass, I've caught trout over ten pounds using this knot.

fishing user avatarBassWhole! reply :

Uni to uni, 8-12 wraps on braid 3 on mono.

Alberto owes me money!

fishing user avatarJaheff reply :

My brother in law still uses a regular albright and has caught tuna up to 45 lbs. Here's mine 24lbs using the Alberto. Granted I was using a 25yrd top shot of mono, but the knot was out there and had to come through the guides. Caught three on this set up.
