Hi all, I am looking at geeting a new fliping stick and which skeet reese would yall recomend? I dont want any other brand of rods. I know that they make a lot more than TW carries.
Clancy W
depends on what ya like better. Id go with the 8ft but I like the longer rod. Skeets old shop has em all.
Wont allow the link. Its Monster Tackle
would it be out of line to ask why you wont consider other brands of rods? the W&M warranties stink.
I was thinking the 7' 6" honeycomb heavy cover. I have two other honeycomb rods and they are very light.

the rods themselves are....iffy. i personally think they belong in the trash but that is my opinion
I thought these rods came already marked for specific applications?

IMO Save your money for another rod.

Yup, however there are several ones that can be used as a flipping stick.

the rods are not bad rods. ive owned 2 and liked them. the problem i have is the warranty. the OP says thats not an issue. what model did you not like?

i tried my friend's spinnerbait/worm rod....like fishing a wet noodle. way too floppy. i bought a lamiglas excel, its a 100x better rod than the tessara. its stiffer, you can actually fish a worm on it. the only rod i would think of buying from that line up is the cranking rod.

that rod makes the perfect small crank bait rod.

I also tried the spinner/bait worm rod, and also thought of it as a wet noodle. Your right it would be a good small crank rod, but I also felt they were uncomfortable(Balance, and reel seat felt funny to me), ugly, and didn't feel as sensitive as other rods in the same price range.

I second that. It's the reason I bought it in the first place. Works well with shallow running cranks and lipless baits. It actually doesn't do badly with spinnerbaits either, but a worm rod?....never.
LOL, you guys are so spoiled by modern gear. That's the kind of junk I grew up using. You can fish a t-rig worm or jig with whippy rod just fine. But with what's out today, its so much better. Oh, for the OP: skip the Skeet Reese rod, and get something HD.

There is nothing wrong with the Skeet rods, so if that what you like then go for it. I had 2 of them and liked em. Skeet like a bit more bend in the rods and there is a reason for it. He rarely loses a fish. He is one of the best fisherman in the world, period.
Alot of people think that their rod choice and opinion of rods is golden. My tournament partner fish's some rods Id never use. Fact is he like's em, and they work for him. As I mentioned in my earlier post I prefer the 8ft flippin, but that HC model might be nice. By the way, when I put my Skeet rods up for sale they were both gone in a couple hours. I have a friend that sold all his Loomis stuff and is loving the Skeet rods. So to each his own. Go for what you like. Hope you catch a PB on your new rod.
Its really a shame people didnt read the last part of you post that says "I dont want any other brand of rods."
Close minded is the in thing in winter, LOL.

ahhhhhh, but its his choice.
I love my Skeet Reese rods. Just bought my second. They will not break the bank, and they are tough as nails. People seem hung up on the color, but I don't care. My 5yo son calls itI prefer my batman rod...
I prefer SR rod to my 2 St Croix Rods. I have heard some people complain about the weight of the SR rods, but the weight does not make as much difference to me(especially in the one or two ounces we're talking about btwn SR and others), it is the balance that counts, I think.
I got the Jig/Worm 7'2" last year and paired it with my Diawa Viento. I used it for everything from spinnerbait to cranks to worms, and never got tired of it. The only thing I didn't use it for was jigs.
The Wife bought me a 2nd viento for Christmas this year and I loved the first rod so much that I just paired my new reel with another Skeet Reese Spinnerbait/Worm 7'0" from Gander. I can't wait for the ice to thaw to get on the water with my new rod. It is not as stiff as other 7 footers, but I was looking for something with a slightly slower tip.
I have not had to deal with the warranty W&M warranty, but have never had good luck with warranties on any rod, so it was not a factor in my decision.
I guess long story short, I would recommend a SR rod to anyone.
I have the Senko/Toad rod and have used it to pull many fish out of heavy grass while flipping. However Im using it more as a everything rod. I like the way the rods fit in my hand and they all balance just right. Color also dosent matter to me. Since the color of my rod dose not affect the way I catch fish then I have no problem with it. I have 2 of the new honeycomb rods. Both of them are finess rods, one baitcaster and one spinning. They have alot of tip but a good backbone to haul in a fish. I dont swing my fish in the boat cuz rods were not made to to that. As said before, they dont break the bank and I would rather be able to fish more ways by having several diffrent rods than having two or three expensive rods.

The 7'2 worm/jig rod was the first one I bought when they came out. It is a great rod, I did some heavy flippin in the grass with that rod and really liked the tip. The rod loaded great, lots of power to get the fish out. Good choice on your rods.
Yeah, you can really unload on the fish with that rod.
Handling the Tessera Rods made me seriously wonder how much influence Skeet really had on the design, because they don't seem very well suited for the application they're supposedly designed for. They're all like noodles, and you're supposed to fish jigs, frogs, and flip with these things?
Do yourself a favor and spend that $100 on something else. You may like them now, but after fishing with a crisp, sensitive rod with backbone, you'll forget all about them. For a little while I used to be hung up on St. Croix Premiers the same way, because they were the best rod I had tried up until then, and they were leaps and bounds better than the Ugly Stiks and Lightning Rods I used as a kid.
***Serious question folks. Is there a more overrated, overpriced, and overhyped rod on the market today in the $200 and under class, than the Skeet Reese Tessera?

Just a little FYI, these are all Skeet designed. Go and check out his signature series by Lamiglas. You can usually find em at some bigger tackle stores. I mentioned it earlier I think in this thread. Skeet prefer a slower bend. I think many of the Elites do(not a majority). There is plenty of back bone, and they are sensitive enough. My opinion after fishing em for a few months was that they are a decent rod. A bit heavy for my liking, but the rod action and design was nice. Casting distance is great. Just as a side note, they are selling a ton of those rods and his fugly reels.
And to answer your last question, the answer is yes. Depending on the part of the country it is most likely another brand of Skeets.
So far I have 6 Skeet rods, all the Tesseras, 7' Crank, 7'10" crank, 7' Spinnerbait, 7'2" Jig, 7'6" swimbait, and the 6'11" Shaky Head. I plan on getting some more soon to change over to all Skeet rods.
I use the 7'2" Jig for flipping a power drop shot and anything under 1/2 oz. I don't really like the feel of a 1/2oz jig on it. One of the rods I have felt and will not own is the 8' flipping stick. The rod is just too heavy and feels really awkward to me. I felt of the 7'6" Honeycomb and I think it will be the one for flipping the heavier jigs, for me anyway.
I can understand why everyone has a problem with the Skeet rods, the spinnerbait rod is a wet noodle and I would never throw a worm on it....but I love it! I have yet to lose a fish on it throwing a 1/2 oz Roland Martin Big Bass Spinnerbait! However, the biggest I caught was a 6lber and it was a fight on that rod. But it seems that the rod has enough give in it to really hook the fish when they bite.
The swimbait rod is an awesome rod in my opinion too. I throw the High Power Herring and Shad on it all the time. Biggest I have caught so far on it was a little over 5lbs, but can't wait to change that this spring. I also throw a buzzbait on it as well and sometimes a spinnebait, the rod handles them all very well. I definately wouldn't throw a 2oz or bigger swimbait on it, it's just not designed for it.
The 7' crankbait rod is probably the best out of all the Skeets. I paired it with a Revo Winch and it has handled everything I have thrown with it so far. The 7'10" also works great but it's just not as versatile as the 7' rod. The 7'10" gets used for DD22s and 3/4oz+ cranks only. I've actually put some bigger line on it and used it for smaller swimbaits as well and it handled them very well.
So to answer your question, I would definately go with the 7'6" Honeycomb rod, that's the one I also plan on getting for the same application. It's all a matter of personal preference and obviously the Skeet rods are not as high quality as say a Dobyns or Kistler, but I have found that by using mostly Skeet rods has really helped my fishing because I'm not changing different rods everytime I want to throw a different lure. I can't wait to change all of my rods over to the Skeets and only use them(except for a Float n' Fly....doubt he will make one for that) so that the feel of the rod will not change no matter which rod I pick up. Each rod has the same feel and same overall characteristics at a price that I can afford. Not to mention my boat is yellow as well 8-) haha

those victory reels are trash. they feel like cheaper than than those $30 reels you see in walmart. they are not smooth at all and like SeanW said they are UGLY

I feel the carrot stix are as overrated as you think the Skeets are... I previously had a E21 Carrot Stick that i was totally unsatisfied with. Sold it on Ebay. I bought a carrot stick from Gander for 149.00 and had the tip snap on a cast. I brought it back and switched to the teserra...
I also have a St Croix 6'8" Avid and prefer the SR to it in most applications.
I agree, his reels seem like crap to me. I use 3 shimano, a pennical, a phuger and a h20. Has anyone used the phluger presidant reel? Iv had it for about 4 or 5 years i think and it wokd like a champ. Its not a shimano....but gets the job done. Thanks for everyones opinion. Again, yes I know there are better rods out there. However, like Evans said, I enjoy having one brand of rods. I will be buying the 7' 6" honeycomb jig rod after I spend some $$$ on baits form TW.
Clancy W
Excellent choice on the 7'6" honeycomb, I molested one at the fishing store today. Can't wait to get one! I also use Pflueger Presidents and love them. Only have 2 but plan on getting more soon. Haven't tried the reels from W&M and don't plan on it. Why would I pay $99 for a reel like that when I can get Pfluger Presidents cheaper, a Shiman Caenan(also molested one of these today, love it), or a BPS Extreme Reel? Plus I have heard nothing but negative about the W&M reels! Love the rods though!!!
That was my views on the reels also. Why pay 100 when i can pay less and get a caenan/sahara. Or pay 20$ more and get a citica.
Clancy W
theres a lot of good reels in $100 range, i cant wait to get a PQ this spring
