High End Frog Rod 2025

fishing user avatarECP1989 reply :

I mainly use G. Loomis GLX’s and they don’t have anything that seems like a good frog rod. I couldn’t find anything in the IMX series of rods either Can anyone suggest a nice frog rod that isn’t as heavy as a brick? I mainly fish thick pads.

Thanks

I love my older 7'3 H Kistler Magnesium frog rod.  So much, I haven't even looked into replacing it (going on 5 or 6 yrs old).  I just got my dad a 7'3 HXF Kistler Helium 3 last year.  It's awesome and would be great for froggin thick pads.  I also have a 7'4 HF St. Croix Avid X that would be really good too.

fishing user avatarPAbasser927 reply :

I use a Dobyns Champion 735C.  Very light and well balanced for how powerful of a stick it is.  Also very easy to cast.  If I  ever had to buy another frog rod down the line, I would buy another 735.

That Helium 3 was the exact rod I was going to suggest.

Daiwa Tatula Elite 7’4 H/F, if you can get past the color it’s a great rod. Can bomb frogs and pull them through the thick stuff.

Otherwise id start looking at the Steez rods.

fishing user avatarBaitFinesse reply :

The old Megabass Orochi xx perfect pitch was an amazing frog rod.  They have a new one out but I don't know how it performs as a frog rod.

fishing user avatarFinnz922 reply :

Irod Air 754. Perfect frog rod IMO.

I know for a fact IMX Pro has two models available.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

ALX IKOS Toad Face frog rod is good for a higher end rod, problem is availability because of it's popularity.

I use Irod IRG 754F Freds Magic rod for frogs among other presentations but isn't a high price rod, just a good frog rod.

This. Ish's frog rod and a zillion is where I'd start looking too. Amazing combo.

Gloomis sells an 884 twfr and an 885 twfr (top water frog rod) in the imx pro series rods

fishing user avatarWIGuide reply :

I really like the St. Croix LTB "Dock Sniper" as a frog rod. It's a 7' H/F so it's a little shorter and lighter and handles fish very well in the thick stuff.

I have three that I would suggest. Dobyns champion 735c, Megabass orochi xx perfect pitch or Shimano Expride 7’2 Heavy (7’3 xh if in really thick stuff. I usually use the champion 735 as I usually have a jig or trig on the other two. But all can be used and are great

A different perspective for you. I'm all for high end gear, but do you really need a high end, super sensitive rod for frogs? You need a stick with enough backbone to set those stout hooks, and to horse the fish out of the salad.

Save some cash on your frog rod, and spend it on a GLX, NRX, Megabass......etc, for your jig and worm applications.

My frog rod is a All Star Classic $35 from Academy!

Plenty backbone for solid hook-ups & pulling Hawgs out of heavy cover.

Money saved bought a new depth finder ????

fishing user avatarfishwizzard reply :

It’s not super “high-end”, but if you want an unusual frog rod, take a look at the Megabass Hyuga 72H.  I have one and have been using it for frogs with great success.  It’s a super versatile rod and feels way more nimble then it should for how powerful it is.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

I wrote about using a high end, heavy jig and worm rod being *my* perfect frog rod.  Light, powerful, and can serve multiple purposes.

This is one thing that is often overlooked is the fact that why does a frog rod have to be only a frog rod? There are many rods that could be utilized for more than just one application. For example, the Megabass USA Valdivia was designed as a frog rod, but also makes a great carolina rig rod (where sensitivity is important). I highly recommend buying the best you can afford even for a frog rod, however look for a rod that could also be versatile enough for other techniques.

Just my take on it. But I definitely know many do the same.

I've been wanting to try this one myself. It would be appropriate since Bobby's is the only hollow body frog I use now.

fishing user avatarRobert Riley reply :

Sounds like a DC736 to me. You aren't gonna need that sensitive of a rod, so spend the money on something that is going to be well balanced and lightweight. The DC735 is a great frog rod, and the DC736 is it's beefier brother. It'd also work great as a back up jig rod, c-rig rod, etc. With it, you get great customer service and you'll be very happy with a solid product.

I’ve heard nothing but bad things about the G. Loomis Frog Rods. Does anyone use them?

So I spent most of my morning driving all over the place before I finally got my hands on the imx pro 884 twfr a model I have been considering myself. Side by side I had the zodias 7’2 heavy fast, 7’5” extra heavy fast, st. Croix ltb slop-n-frog, shimano crucial 7’3 heavy. Weaning a few out really quickly I walked out with the loomis 884c twfr. I think for really thick stuff the 885 would be a much better choice but this rod can definately do it. I grabbed a chronarch mgl and spooled up 50lbs power pro braid and a 1/2oz frog and hit the pond.

Water is really low as they are pumping out for crop and the mats were thicker then usual but figured it would be a good test. I ended up missing close to 7 or 8 blowouts, but hooked into 7 bass from 1.25lbs to 5lbs 4oz, in open water to the thickiest stuff the pond had to offer. This rod preformed flawlessly. Plenty of backbone to horse that 5lber out of a thick mat and over a fallen down log, yet soft enough to throw that 1/2oz frog across the pond even on a really windy day! Needless to say I am very thrilled by this rod and pleased I made the choice with the loomis over the zodias. Not to mention the weight and balance is great on the rod. I will be hitting 3 different ponds tomorrow to try putting it through it’s paces again!

fishing user avatarBaitFinesse reply :

If you understand that there is a difference between walking or popping 1/2 oz frogs and dragging 5/8 oz + rats over mats then you may be able to appreciate the 7'2" H Megabass Hyuga as a frog rod for dragging rats over mats.  It has a ton of power and loads in a way that will long bomb a Terminator Walking Frog 3" 11/16 oz or similar heavier frog.  It is not a broom handle and it does have a really nice tip but I prefer the softer tip of the extra fast Orochi XX Perfect Pitch as a 1/2 oz popping and walking frog rod.  Where the Orochi XX PP leaves off the 7'2"H Hyuga picks up and escalates.

fishing user avatarcrypt reply :

built my own using an MHX 8 foot heavy act. flipping stick. nice tip for casting, but plenty of backbone for pulling fish out of heavy mats.
