Jig and occasional frog combo? 2024

I am looking to set up a new combo to throw jigs on and want to base it around one of the new tatula reels in a 7 or 8 gear ratio. This rod will also need to throw a frog on very rare occasions as I rarely have the opportunity to do so in the mostly open water I fish. What rods would you guys recommend at the $100 price point? I dont really want to go over this as that will cut into the money I have to stock up on new jigs to use on the combo.

2018 Tatula full cork 7'1" H/fast is what I use for jigs/frogs/large texas rigs. Found mine for a little over $100

I'm sold. I probably get 10% or more casting distance. Plus you can really tell the difference when fighting a hard pulling fish with the torque reduction. I am about to sell a bunch of my rods and replace them with Spiralites.

I saw these rods on tw awhile back and thought maybe they were a gimmick but I'm glad to hear that they actually do perform. I wish I could go to a store and pick one up before buying but I have a feeling I'll be making my first online rod purchase.

Was thinking of picking this up as a jig rod, but I found this same rod in the elite line used for $125. Wondering if I should spend the extra money.

I just picked up a Dobyns Fury 703C for use as a jog rod and it has done beautifully so far. I also picked up the rode mentioned above, 735 for frogs and it works great for that but i didn't like it for jigs.

703C would fit the bill for your use, especially if you are throwing a frog in sparse cover situations.

I frog with a Shimano SLX 7'2" H/F that was probably meant for jigs as they also have a 7'5" H/F in the SLX line-up. I now jig with the former frog rod, a Quantum Team KVD 6'10" H/F.

Another rod to look at would be the Okuma Scott Martin TCS 7'3" H/F... I got it as a frog rod and i have used it for jigs and swim jigs, light flipping, and small-medium sized swimbaits. I absolutely love that rod, I don't think they get enough attention. It can be found on Amazon for about $100-$110, that's a steal imo.

What @BigBass'n_Harrison Said. I purchased the same Okuma Scott Martin TCS rod (mine says “Frog/Swimbait” on the ferrule). It’s been used for S-Waver 168s and other smaller swimbaits, a variety of frogs, jigs, and large T-rigged worms. For me it just works.

ALX Toadface is a solid frog and jig rod. I actually bought a 2nd one because I loved it for throwing whopper ploppers.

I have the Cabela's ZX 7'3" Frog model that was exactly $100. But I use a different rod for jigs. I could use the frog rod for jigs, but it's stiff as a pool cue, which you kinda need in lilies and slop. So I'd recommend a Hvy-F jig rod if it will do double duty.

At the $100 price point, I'd recommend the Dobyn's Fury 735. I have dedicated jig rods, but the 735 will definitely do well dragging and hopping jigs. I use my 735 for frogs and Whopper Ploppers along with 65lb Power Pro braid.

yep its a jack of all trade rods, I absolutely love it. I've even used it in saltwater a couple times and it's held up well... to the water at least, yet to catch a striper on on it.

I'll add another vote for the slx rod and the dobyns fury. Of the 2 I'd take the slx tho. Very lightweight and well made sticks. Could easily be a 150 to 200 rod. The spiral wrapped rods just dont do much for me. I get the concept as I used to build rods but honestly they're just too goofy looking for me. Glad guys are liking them tho and maybe I'm being too vain but that's why theres so many choices out there. Lots of good suggestions here

I just saw that the BPS carbonlite 2.0 rods have gone on sale for $99. Does anyone have any experience with using this rod for this purpose or any thoughts on how it would pair with the new tatula 100?

For the same price you can get a Daiwa Tatula rod from Sportsman’s Outfitters and get a lot better rod.

Thanks for the info on sportsman's outfitters as I have never heard of them. They also seem to have the tatula 100 and 200 reels on sale for $109. Does sportsman's outfitters typically run a lot of sales or is there a special sale going on? Also what would be everyone's preference of a gear ratio for this combo?

Sportsman's has cheap prices, but they are legit. I bought a tatula rod from there and it was shipped very nicely and the rod is great. Gotta get a high speed reel 8.1:1 for jig/frog rod.

I'm not sure how often they have there sales but the Tatula rods and reels have been on sale for the past several months. They have fast shipping also. I ordered my Tatula 100 on a Saturday and it was at my door Wednesday. I use 7.1 for jigs and frogs.

Thanks for the input. I think I have decided on putting together a combo of the tatula 100 in 8.1:1 and the tatula full cork rod in 7'1 H/f. I think that this will be an exceptional combo especially if I still get them for a price of $109 for both the rod and reel. I'm sure it will blow away any other $220 combo I could put together right now

I don't understand spending a lot on a rod for frogging. I use a berkley shock rod I got on clearance for 10 bucks and it works well.

This combo will actually be used for jigs about 99% of the time. I typically only get the chance to throw a frog once a year where I live and who knows when the next time I throw one will be

i picked up a 7'3 MH tatula elite rod and it's easily become my favorite and go-to. will be picking up a few more
