The 100$ one on tackle warehouse, how does everyone like it? Might snag one up at the Labor Day sale...

I have the MG. I love it. I'm planning on getting a tourney pro, BB1, and a speed spin, so have been doing tons of research on all manner of Lews stuff. I cant find anyone with anything bad to say about any Lews reels.

Have you encounted in your research anything on team lews rods?

I have not, except for the occasional mention on a review site such as tackle tour or ***. Havent come across many actual user reviews of the rods, but im not necessarily looking for them either.

I also have the MG, and its one of my top reels. I have wrestled a couple of 6+lbrs lately with this reel paired with an Avid, and the outfit didn't even flinch. Reel performed flawlessly.

fishing user avatarMontanaro reply :

I've got a few hours on the speed spool.  I like it so far, but have only caught a few dinks on it.

fishing user avatarWiregrassRiverRat reply :

I love my speed spool.. have a 6.4:1 that I use for my flipping pitching worm/jig applications

fishing user avatar29JMP29 reply :

i got an mg for the same price as the regular speed spool. its smooth, haven't oiled it all summer and its the same as it was coming out of the box. it handles braid really well too

fishing user avatarCapt.Bob reply :

I would recamend a speed spool in a heart beat!!! I would however hesitate to recamend the speed spin's,,,,,,,,if you know what I mean.

fishing user avatarWarEagleBassin reply :

I love this reel. I've had mine almost a year and haven't had one problem with it. Very sturdy when fighting a fish and casts like a dream. I seriously can't remember one backlash on this reel. I would highly recommend it.

fishing user avatarkatmandew reply :

You can find the Lews Tourney Pro on eBay for about $130. I haven't used the lower end stuff but its hard to beat the TP for the money. I've heard the low end reels are not bad but the TP is a huge step up in performance and for an extra $30, definitely worth a look.

What's the difference from the MG speed spool for 80$ compared to the normal 100$ speed spool?

If you see an actual speed spool mg for $80, grab it while you can. I think you might be looking at the laser MG though for $80, which I know nothing about.

differences between the speed spool and tournament MG appear to be drag, handle, and the MG has clicking drag and spool tension knobs. Both are aluminum frame.

The laser mg is a graphite frame, rulon drag instead of carbon, and 8 bearings instead of 10.

Is the tournament mg the big 95mm handle really awkward since its bigger?

I dont have any of the other Lews reels yet, so I really cant compare. I noticed no big difference from my quantum or my old daiwa procaster. If anything, its more comfortable.

If you have a gander mountain near you, they carry the Lews lineup. You can get them in hand and feel it for yourself, to see if you can tell a difference.

I really like the handles on the MG. I am a paddle handle fan. I know others do not like it. Different strokes for different folks.

fishing user avatarMontanaro reply :

My speed spool doesn't seem that secure on my Team Daiwa T rod.    Whenever I get a quality fish on, it feels loose like it's going to come off, but it's tightened on there.  Any thoughts?

Havent had any issues with my MG like that. Have you had another reel on the rod to make sure its not the reel seat?

If its not the rod, check over the reel for possible cracks or something. That doesnt sound right.

I was thinking about getting Laser MG Speed Spool from Gander. I am a beginner on bait-casters. What size Avid rod were you using? The only casting rod I have is 6'6" St Croix Triumph Medium Power...would this work? Any line suggestions for a beginner? Thanks in adance

on the daiwa T rod (and any other rod with the aluminum locking hood), stand the rod up on end and push down on the reel as you tighten down the hood. doing this, you should be able to turn it another 1/16th or 1/8th of a turn and really tighten it up.

Jiggz, I have the 7ft MH, Avid. I can't really recommend you a rod, unless I know what you are primarily going to use for. For ex with my avid, it serves as a secondary frogging rod, and swimbait rod. I have MG spooled up with 30# braid.

I think primarily I would use it for smaller cranks/Texas rigging. I am going to use my 7' MH Vendetta for frogging and bigger lures. So with that application for the 6'6" St Croix go well with the Lew's MG?

That set up, sounds fine to me. Good luck and enjoy.

fishing user avatarRyan Nichols reply :

I recently got into 4 Lews tournment and 1 tourney pro. Really happy with Lews. When I switch fishing rods between my green curado bantams (the older reliable ones) and the lews - the weight, size, smoothness and cast-ability are all superior on Lews. From what I've researched the SS will share a lot of the same parts as my tourneys and fully believe they will be about 80% as good for less money. Lews isn't like shimano or diawa where their various reel lines can have completely different characteristics and go from good to suck.

Thanks for the help:

- So which would you guys suggest then  Lew's Laser MG Speed Spool ($79.99) or the Lew's Speed Spool($99.99) whats the big difference? What gear ratio recomended for Texas Rigging/Small Cranks?

fishing user avatarJWOA reply :

Lews are pretty realible..I have one of their rods and reels..great combo...great for the money too

I think i pick up a speed spool soon myself

Anyone have the BB1 series? Thinking of getting one for crankin. Never had an original but had a BPS David Fritts which employed the same concepts. It cast a mile but weighed a ton. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Yup. picked one up not long ago. Cranking is SMOOOOOOTH and yes, it casts a mile.

I dont notice the weight difference myself.
