What You Think This Bass Weighs? 2024

fishing user avatarBammerBass reply :

wiuddi.jpgwiuddi.jpg

I lost an even bigger one about a month ago. Fished off s piernabout 15 foot off thr water surface and was using a light action rod and 4 lb test line. Got over excited and managed to get it out of the water and tried to reel it up but when I did thst, the line snapped :( it was easily the biggest bass of my life, a good 4 or 5 inches longer than this one.

This time no came prepared, brought a d ipnet. Hung this one on the first cast of the day on a 1.5 inch silver minnow tiny shad panfish assassin. I was more patient this time, heart was still pumping though. This time I let it wear itself down and my dad went down to the water level with the net and I eased him over enough to where dsd was able to net him. I was excited!!! Dont grt to fish much anymore and to have something like this strike while crappie/bluegill fishing just tickled me. I know its nothing to really brag about but I think it is a decent catch.

2.25 lbs perhaps?

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Any idea on the length? Just going from the thickness of the fish and the size of the head and mouth I'd guess in the 2.5-3 pound range.

fishing user avatarBammerBass reply :

Didn't mean to paste the same pic twice, but this is a different angle. Dad had just came back up with it and got it out of the net. When it hit, I thought it was a rock at first andn then I felt it doing circles and said to myself "rocks dont do thst stuff on their own!". I wish I woulda had a scale eith me but sadly I did not. Dad said it was somewhere between 16 and 16.5 inches long when he measured it.

fishing user avatarcorn-on-the-rob reply :

If you don't own a scale the best thing you can do is take a quick measurement. The length can give you rough estimate of its weight. Unless the bass is exceptionally thin or fat it is pretty accurate.

The picture you took also is a tough angle to get a good look but based on it roughly anywhere from 2.00 to 2.75lbs

fishing user avatarcorn-on-the-rob reply :

I was writing the post while you submitted yours. Yea that length puts it at close to 2.75 maybe a little more. It looks healthy. Good catch

fishing user avatarBammerBass reply :

It kinda shocked me it even bit. Temps were on the cool side andnit was windy, so I figured brim and crappie would be what id be catching that day. I had been to thwt same location a couple weeks prior and watched bass chase minnows along the shoreline and give some bluegill major heck. Had a blast catching this thing on that light rod and 4 lb line. Might not be a trophy fish, but still quality in my eyes. And it was on the chunky side too. I wanted to get a straight pic of thr belly to show jist how chunky it was, but dad told men to quit fooling around and told me to get back out there, and so I did lol. No more bass that day, but a couple decent drum, and 1 17 inch drum.

fishing user avatarcorn-on-the-rob reply :

What lake were you fishing?

fishing user avatarBammerBass reply :

Tennessee River. Off an old barge loading pylon/pier. There is a pretty good current in that area and there is a nice little drop off where the water goes from.about 5 feet deep to about 18-20 feet. That bass came in from the deep side of the drop off and hit that little bass assassin on the fall. I use a slow retrieve with that little jig and occasional twitch. That bass bit as the lure fell.back down after a twitch. I've caught several smaller 8-10 inch bass and crappie on a slow but steady retrieve with no twitching. The bass seem to realllllly like that silver shad/tiny minnow 1.5 inch panfish assassin. I've caught svere decent size drum on the black shad colored panfish assassin.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

One and three quarters pound.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Pound and a half maybe ;)

fishing user avatarOK Bass Hunter reply :

2lbs

fishing user avatarWIGuide reply :

Given that it was on the chunky side, I'd have to say a little over 2 lbs

Less than 2 lbs.

fishing user avatarRhino68W reply :

Don't listen to the jealous folks. Thats a 20 pounder all day! :D

fishing user avatarSenko lover reply :

Is that a junkyard you're fishing from?

fishing user avatarBammerBass reply :

Nah. Old barge loading pylon/pier. I've caught a bunch of Drum on those jifs, several nice bluegill/shellcracker on nightcrawlers, a crappie on a jig and a couple catfish there as well on chicken liver. Seems that moving water attracts all kinds of fish therr, with the catfish caught on the deep aide of the drop off. Doesn't appear thst it has been fished too heavily.

lol I wouldn't lie and try to say it is a 5 over because I know thst would be a bunch of bull lol. But I think 2.5 lbs is a fair estimate. Between 16 and 16.5 inches length and being healthy looking 2.5 seems a reasonable guess. Again nothing to really write home about, but big enough to have fun with, especially on that light set up. The one I lost the time before looked like it was a solid 4, but alas, failed to get him up the pier before the line snapped so that doesn't count.

Seems I've found a honey hole for several kinds of fish :D

fishing user avatar5fishlimit reply :

I'd say it's about a 1 to 1.5 pounder.

As Catt stated, "Compare his fist to the bass's head"

fishing user avatarOzark_Basser reply :

16-16.5 inches and chunky.  Definitely a 2 llber.  You can't really compare the fish to his hand because you don't know how big his hand is and the angle at which the pictures are taken will make the hands look a tad bigger than they really are.  I take pictures like this all the time.

To the OP, the best way to take a picture of a fish to tell how big it is is to take a picture of one from straight above while it lays next to your rod and reel as a comparison.  If you look at my gallery I have a good example.

Show off. To the OP, that is how ya do it.  After you've shown a few bass pics to your buddies, family, or whoever and they try to disagree with how big it is, you'll start carrying a scale and a ruler along with your camera lol.  I have had my grandpa actually drive to the place where I was fishing and measure a fish after I told him on the phone how big it was.

Haha.  Yea maybe I shouldn't say definitely a 2 lber, but I feel it's bigger than 1.5.

fishing user avatarBammerBass reply :

Ill settle for anywhere between 1.5 and 2.5 its SOMEWHERE in that range most likely. I dont get to go much these days, so any time I manage a fish over 15 inches in length, im pretty happy. I've tried strictly flst out fishing for bass by using heavier line, medium to medium-heavy spin casting outfits. Plastic lizards, plastic worms, buzzbaits, crankbaits, spinner baits, and never had success. So I know im definitely no bass angler. I just stick to the "easy" fish like bluegill, and hope I grt lucky enough at some point to cstch a crappie or decent bass. I believe some things you can practice and get better at , but I also think there are certain things that you'll either be good at it, or you'll stink it up, no matter how much practice you have. And in regsrds to bass fishing, I definitely fall into the category of being bad at it, and no amount of practice I can do will change it.

So yeah one like this one for me tickles me and is a "good catch" in my mind but for those who sre good bass anglers, thats below average. Skilled bass anglers can catch multiple 3 and 4 lbers and be like "meh, ive had much bigger", b, cause indeed they have. I dunno how id react if I ever hung a 5+lber. Id probably run around in circles and lose my mind.

Ha. It could be 2. What do I know? It's hard enough to tell when you have a good profile shot. At that angle, who knows. If the OP thinks it's 2.25, maybe it is? He he probably has better perspective than anybody.

Yeah lol I thought 2.25 was a good guess because when i got it up, it was very healthy appearing and had nice symmetry to it all the way around. Felt of its belly and therr was definitely some good meat there. Again i will NOT claim it to be a 5 lber becsuse i know full darn well that is just not the case lol.

Check your scale against a certified scale. I had a similar digital scale that was OVER a pound off.

That fish looks over 5lb to me, unless you are a hobbit or something.

Check your scale.

Beautiful healthy athletic bass in the absolute prime of its life, i bet it fought like hell depending on your water temp.

If that fish was sixteen inches or so, then I can definitely say that scale is wrong.

fishing user avatarBooyahMan reply :

How big are you? You make that sixteen incher look small (or as others mentioned, could be the angle too). But yes, if it is a 16 incher then it looks to be at the very least a 2. Nice fish regardless!

Sorry for the double post. I've been thinking about getting a scale like this for some time. Does weighing a fish like this damage the fish at all? Also, how accurate do you find that Berkley scale to be? I believe we sell them at my work and if it's a worthy investment then I will pick it up during my employee appreciation day (30% off!).

Beauty slab by the way!

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

No, it doesn't harm them. Maxillary tissue heals quickly. The important thing us to avoid torque on the jaw, like you see in magazines all the time.

im bout 5'10 and fat. Lol. My knuckles ans fist are on the above average size.

J Francho, I bet your bass was at least another quarter to half lb bigger than your scale said. That is one beefy fish!!! Id love to cstch one like that.

Ahh ok. I'm 5 inches shorter than you so fish like the one you got look a lot bigger when I hold them. For example:

P1030349_zpsd33c9d3b.jpg

This is why I take a quick pic or two with the fish against my rod, especially if I don't have a measuring tape on me. Sounds like it's time to buy a scale!

Keep playing, and posting questions - you will catch one.  Here's one that was a little bigger than that one.  No scale shot, lol.  I just posted that up because it drove my point home.

short and to the point, but great answer.

I wasn't trying to start a competition or anything, I just wanted to get a general idea of whst it may have weighed, it was sorta fun taking guesses and eberything lol. It was between 16-16.5 inches in length (couodnt get a real down to the 1/8th inch mea s urement cuz she was too feisty lol, but she wss over the 15 inch minimum length so she was a "keeper if we had decided to keep it and some of the other drum n bluegill/shellcracker. Main thing is we got her back in the water so she can spawn more beautiful bass in thr future, and i had a blast catching her, especially on that light rod.

And I used the weight estimator tool on here last night after reading similar posts and they mentioned the tool. I put in the 16 inch length and it estimated it at 2.32. Ill take thst every time!!

Never the end.  Not many, myself included, have been to the top of the mountain.  With the help of other anglers on this site, I dink drop fish under 2 lbs.  I don't bother with pics or weighing them.  BammerBass can get there, too.  It doesn't matter where you live - a five is do able, and a testament to getting out there. oh certainly I agree a 5 is definitely doable. Heck I lost one mid way up that same pier a couple weeks ago, and I could tell just by looking at it that it was a solid 4, which defi iteky woulda been a personal best for me if I had successfully landed it and got her in my hands :( She had thst little light rod bent into basically a U. Did grt her up out of the water and it looked like she had a mouth almost big enough to put my fist in..... but my I patience/overexcitement caused me to lose her :( shoulda just let her tire down a bit more and work her over to the bank where dsd would have been able to ease over snd grab her. But hey, lesson lewrned from thet battle I think helped me land my last one, or else I may have lost it too to overreagerness. Dang it now I wish I had a hut right there to live in and go out there every darn day lol. All this talk in this topic and all the other topics ia makings water at the mouth for more :D way I carried on when inflamed that 2lber any seasoned "vet" woulda laughed at me, or anyone else for thet matter would have thought was nuts (theu would likely be right if they thoughts LOL). Ah but that rush I got from that fish was awesome, took me back to my days as a kid, and that is ehst its all about, enjoying the day and having fun.

I am far from being a seasoned vet but no one has the right to laugh at you for that. It's all about personal goals and in the end, if you had fun then who cares what anyone else thinks? My PB was a 16 incher up until a couple of months ago. Believe me, I paraded a photo of it around to all my friends haha.

Besides, a 2lb bass on light gear is just as fun as catching a 5lber on heavier gear in my opinion.

fishing user avatarBammerBass reply :

Oh heck yeah, that waa an absolute blast!!! 5 foot 6 zebco light action rod and reel thst my late mother bought me years ago as a bday present, 4 lb line, silver minnow panfish assassin on a 1/16 oz jig, that was fun, fun, fun!!!! All the more specisl to me it came on thst rod my mother bought me. I wouldn't tske all the money in the world for it. She loved fishing too, and got excited about catching a nice bass like I do. So.I guess perhaps one could say she is doing her fishing theough me now.

fishing user avatarBammerBass reply :

One thing that was especially encouraging about this catch was the hook set. Dad told me when he was down wt the water about to walk back up with it there was no way it was going to spit the hook because it hooked in a tough part of its mouth and it swallowed it a good ways. So to enable him to get back up, had to cut the line ans then extract the hook with a pair of pliers. So that tells me that it e videntily liked the way I was retrieving(slow and steady) and twitching the jig a couple times on the way (bit on the fall down after the twitch). So maybe if I can catch a day with similar conditions, I can find similar success :)
