Answer: 5.1:1

What does the "size" mean on this item?

Answer: Size refers to the size of line and drag it can handle. Just as a reference I would say a 500 is for UL 1000 UL/L 2000L 3000M 4000MH 5000H. This isn't science but it should help. I use my 1000 on a 7ft UL and It is beautiful. Also go to your local wallmart. Mines sells these for a conperable price but you get to actually see the size of the reel.

Answer: what size or type of fishing are you doing ...this is a great reel but the 40 is a bit small big fish like stripped bass or 16 lb blues ...

Answer: Size determines amount and size line reel will hold.

Answer: clam shell packaging. vs box

Answer: clam is packaging like what you would see if it were hanging up in an outdoor store. Clear plastic case. Box is in a box.

Answer: Clam means it comes in a plastic cover , box means it comes packed in a cardboard box.

Answer: Clan is a see thru plastic casting, a box is not see thru and possible adds more protection during shipping

Answer: No difference from what I can tell. Bought one each way. However; watch out these reels handles unscrew very easily. I won't be buying another one due to having to re tighten it every few casts (seriously).

Answer: whatever you want. I fish for stripped bass with it, up to 4-5 lbs.

Answer: The handle is reversible and can be used on either side of the reel. All-in-all, a pretty nice reel for the money.

Answer: The reel is rated for line size not for the size of the pole you put it on. For example you could have a six foot pole that is stiff as a pool cue or you could have a six foot pole that as limber as a Willow Branch. Obviously the smaller reels= smaller line. larger reels larger line.. generally an all purpose reel would be a 25 or 30 in my opinion

Answer: The best size for weight, balance and line in my opinion.

Answer: It can. Just rinse it off really well with fresh water when you are done, and keep it lubed ????

Very nice reel. The weight balances out my rod almost perfectly (5' U/L Ugly Stick). The only problem I have with the reel is that the bail doesn't easily close when winding down after the cast. I suppose more use will correct this in time, but it can be mildly annoying. Other than that, the max drag matches well if you're using 6lb. line. While I prefer 4 lb. test, the drag is smooth and easily dialed down.

Honestly I wish I could give it no stars this thing came nicely packaged in a nice Box within a Box I said it up with 4 pound test the 1st time I used it the bail came off on one side I put it back in then after a few more cast I hooked up an started to reel in a fish an noticed the anti reverse switch was stuck so I had no drag an no pun intended but what a drag that was I trusted the reviews but was let down or maybe I just got a bad reel we all take our chances when we believe what everyone else is saying so purchase with caution an happy fishing

I own another Abu garcia silver max in ultralight, I bought this big silver max to put on a big game rod......... drag doesnt not work at all it just spins freely. . . No the switch doesnt go from free spin to drag either. No matter how hard I have the drag set it just spools out line line. Dont but abu Garcia on amazon because I have the silver max spinning reels and black max bait casters from bait shops and they work great and just feel different than the one I got on amazon.

Received the reel without the handle knob.....Disappointed to say the least the real looked great with that exception. On the plus I have to hand it to Amazon, I returned it to a Kohls return site and had my money back before I got home..........I have to agree with another review....Amazon is not the place to buy Abu Garcia....

This is a solid spinning reel. It can be difficult to find decent fishing gear in the sub-$50 price range and this is definitely worth it in this price range because there's a fair bit of junk out there. I've have had no issues with it, smooth operation, very good quality overall. Obviously won't compete with a reel that costs 3-4 times as much, but for what it is, it's just swell.
