The young man that works for me and I fished Lake Chesdin today for about 7 hours and had a solid day. We caught a total of 15 bass the best 5 = 12.7 lbs and these two made up 7.3 lbs of it.
I thing I have this young man hooked on bass fishing. Earlier this season he landed his PB 5.9lber and today he put 9 bass in the boat.
A great outing and a new bass fisherman! Well done!
Chesdin has become a very solid Lake to fish. I saw tons of shad schooling and I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. Not sure what species of shad/shinner, but I plan to take a cast net this Sept to get a closer look, so I can find the best match for my lures.
Welcome aboard @mtneer99!
Outstanding!
Hope your friend keeps on fishing.
Good job, Richard!

Mtneer99, where is the Chick River on your list of favorite lake or river?
Some of the best fishing in the state is on the Chick River.
Also, did you know that some of those big Florida strain bass have made it into Chick Lake? Don't how they got there but they are there.

I'm more familiar with Chick Lake vs River
because I'm not sure what I'm doing when tidal bass fishing
same way with the James, Upper Chippokes my favorite tidal place I've fished.
Chippokes is remote (20- 30 minute ride), uninhabited, peaceful and no traffic or fishing pressure.
no I didn't know about the FL strain in Chick lake, I was fishing there a few years ago after Hurricane ? when the River was over the dam, and the Lake became TIDAL for a day or 2.

Tidal is great. Easy to learn. You want an outgoing tide. Upper Chippokes is OK if you go back into the creek. Otherwise on weekends it is loaded with tournament guys.
Good luck and look up fishing videos on Woo Daves web page, http://woodaves.com/articles_main.htm, they are very good.

Woo is da man!
he's the one who told me about Chippokes
I haven't fished it in 10 years though
out going tide, thanks didn't know that
Chick can be busy, I'd stayed mostly on the Diascund side

Bookmark the following page and note the Chick and Historic James Rivers' tides for the days you want to fish.
https://www.saltwatertides.com/dynamic.dir/virginiasites.html
Check out all of the rivers listed and always review it for the tides. A high tide falling is the best and the first hour of an incoming tide is good, too.
Be safe and be sure to go to the back of Diascund Creek by the railroad bridge and fish it all the way back to the Chick hitting all docks and piers. Be careful as the DG&IF will set up speed traps and give you a ticket if you are going too fast.
Richard, took my Ranger out on Friday to test her after putting on a new prop and droping the motor an inch and hit 56 MPH very fast.
So I backed down to 45 MPH and cruised around the lake just to make sure the motor ran well, which it did.
Almost called you but I decided to go home now that the test was over. Did no fishing; just looked at the sights and other boats.
State Police were out there practicing their rescue techniques in their Rubbercraft. Waved at them and they waved back.
Did find out that the Seven Springs ramp closest to the parking lot is no longer level. The smaller ramp closest to the restaurant is OK.
Lake was dirty from the rain the day before so I double the bass were biting.
Just giving you an update.
Take care.

I wish you would have called I spent the day cleaning up the old fishing pontoon boat to get it ready to sale. It would given me a reason to head to the lake.
The wife and I did go fishing the previous Sunday for about six hours and I didn't get a bite on anything I tried. The caught a few bream after she got tired of not getting a bass bite.

Next time I will.
Sounds good
CJ (the guy that works for me) and I went out for 4 hours this afternoon we caught 6 bass only 3 scorable the biggest was 2lbs. Water temperature was 88° the clarity was 2 to 3 foot
I have a short day tomorrow so I'm going to give it a try for a few hours.
I'll give an update on how I do.
If anyone has the time I have an open seat.
Fished for about 4 hours this afternoon caught 4 small ones biggest one 2.2 lbs water temperature 83° water clarity was 3 to 4 foot at the lower end close to the dam started staining up past Whippernock but still pretty good.

thanks for the report
I hope to give it a try this weekend.
also plan to take my cast net to see those shinner/shad a little closer.
I'll post if I'm successful

Make sure you put your head on a swivel and be safe out there the weather is going to be great and it's a holiday weekend so the crazies will be out in full force.

Do you know how to get in the old river?
A buddy of mine fished this morning for about 4 hours he caught 3 bass the biggest one about 3lbs and 3 pike over 22 inches all in about 600 yards/an hour and a half time period and the bite turned off like someone flipped a switch.
Got to love Lake Chesdin

Remember, although Namozine is a good fishery it is shallow in places. Be safe and have fun.

no I'm not sure what you mean
I've put in at the campground ramp
You can get up in the the upper end of the Appomattox above Lake Chesdin Campground but you have to be carefully getting from the Campground to the river it can be tricky

yeah I see know what you mean, and I've seen the aerials to understand it's a strange route to fish the Appomattox.
Sunday I did catch about 50-60 gizzard shad in my cast net
some treats for my pond bass

Gizzard shad all were about 3-4"
strange it seems like about that size is all I've seen at Chesdin
I know they can get big.

Once you learn how to get up there it can be some good fishing especially around and in Winterpock swamp and it a good place to get away with the crazies on the weekends.
I'm going out there tomorrow to give them one more chance to stretch my line before my surgery on Thursday.

I think I figured out the route?
so just keep the motor trimmed up and I'll be fine?
thx

"Zero" but to be honest I wasn't really fishing hard I just wanted to spend the day on the water. I used the time to teach the young man that works for me how to operate the boat.
I feel that your co angler should know how to run the boat enough to at least get you somewhere for help in case of an emergency.
I let run the trolling motor 90% of the time so he spent the day throwing a finesse worm in the grass because he caught those two big ones that's in the picture above doing that, so now I've got to convince him that there is other ways and places on the lake to catch fish.
However after spending the better part of six hours throwing his little finesse worm in the grass it might not be to hard????
As far as that route that is marked in that picture I have never been that way but I do know there isn't much water over on that flat and there is some stumps along the edge of the old river channel that you would crossing over. When I get home I'll send you a snap of the trail I have saved
on my Navionics map. Hell for that matter if I'm feeling up to I could just show you the end of next week in person.
Surgery went well and so far afterwards is going well. Hopefully I can get some food in and out of me tomorrow so they will send me home. I'm laying here in bed watching my wife sleep in the chair "God bless her she is great"
Sorry for the long post I'm bored
thanks for the help!
my pond in Church Road is 3' below normal, so that has me a little unsure about going up the river
Be extremely careful when venturing into Winterpock Swamp.
Lots of tree stumps and boulders.
There is an "old river channel" along the Chesterfield County shoreline that you have to follow. Seems you found it on your map.
Good fishing in the Swamp but it is dangerous to venture into the area without knowing what you are doing.

Yeah what he said. I fish in there often but I still trim up and idle in and out.
Follow up Report 9/13-9/15
Friday was semi-slow, cloudy with drizzle all day, nothing consistent, junk pattern day
Saturday morning was slow until 12, then the bite was good until dark
Sunday was slow, caught a few, but this 4.5 hawg hammered a crank for me.
Overall it was a slower bite than our Sept 2018 trip, and caught about 10 fewer bass.
75% of the bite was on the fall, 25% chase
Zero 0 topwater
On 9/7/2019 at 7:40 PM, reb67 said:Yeah what he said. I fish in there often but I still trim up and idle in and out.
we did sorta attempt going up the river, but decided to turn around before the golf course.
I'll try it again sometime, when the lake level is normal
I went out for about 4 hours yesterday afternoon didn't do much caught 3 biggest one was 2.02
The water clarity was great but the water temperature is still in the 80's
My buddy and I went out for about 5 hours this morning caught 7 total 2 around 3lbs the rest barely scorable. The water temp is still in the upper 70's.
My Kerr Lake trip fell through so the wife and I are headed to Chesdin in the morning.
Hopefully we will have a good day my wife will be calling the shots tomorrow so there's no telling what we will be doing, hell it can't be any worse then what I've been doing lately.
Full disclosure if we do well I'm talking credit because she is learning from me???? by the end of the day we may end up bream fishing because that's her favorite fish to eat.
No matter how we do its going to be a great day because I'm going to be on the water with my favorite fishing partner.
