I was curious to know a few details about everyones personal best LMB or SMB.
1. How big was it?
2. What Bait did you catch it on?
3. General time of day and weather? (was it noon on a bluebird sky day? After dark on a cloudy night after a storm front?)
4. What Month of the year?
The bronzebacks in my avatar.
Caught and released on the Tennessee River
below Pickwick Dam in January, 2005. Bright,
sunny day, rising barometer, water temperature
47*, big shinners on a split shot rig.
The fat one was caught about 11:30, the longer
fish about 1:00. The fat bass was just over 7 lbs
and the hardest fighting freshwater fish I have
ever caught. The other smallmouth is my PB,
about 4" longer, but only a pound heavier.
8-)
LM at 8.80# caught at Lake Okeechobee near Clewiston. Caught on a Bass Magic 5.5" hollow body swimbait, Caught at Noon or so in pre-frontal conditions-warm and windy with some cloud cover.
No SM down here but largest Florida Peacock (Florida Smallmouth I call them ) at 6.72# caught on a spook-early morning warm day clear sky.
11.1 pounds. I caught it on a rage tail anaconda in redbug at about 10am in a local lake near where I live in Ft. myers.
LM about 3 1/2 or 4lbs (not sure)caught and released warm june morning this past summer
booyha boogee bait, color chart./white
7-12 / 26" largemouth (see avatar photo) caught on a 3/8oz firetiger Roostertail in-line spinner at about 3pm on October 18, 2009. Nice, sunny October day with both water and air temps probably somewhere in the 60s.
Adding per Paul's request: Fishing from the earthen dam of a 25 acre lake - hooked-up probably about 7-10 feet deep, 60-70 feet off the bank.
Interesting:
I think it would be a good idea to state the size of water body and depth fish came from. Time of day would be nice, but I'll have to check my journals for that:
22" LM: Deep overcast day with rain in August from a large (60acre) quarry (80+ feet deep). Caught in 5fow. Sometime mid-day (after I got around to that particular spot).
The largest I've got a thumb latch onto was a buddies 23" that was caught in 6fow on a dead-sticked jig in a small (6acre) 12ft deep pond. It was in early August and I distinctly remember the day was partly sunny with huge popcorn shaped cumulus -likely representing a high BP pattern with dropping pressure due to developing thunderheads. Mid-afternoon (?).
20"SM: 7fow in small (30acre) lake (16feet deep) on swum jig in June. Overcast from developing front. Late afternoon -~5pm(?).
Smallmouth - 5-4, August, 1995, Lake Ontario, 26 FOW, live softshell crab (recently moulted crawfish) on split shot rig. Can't remember time of day, but a 6-4 was boated by my ex earlier that morning.
Largemouth - 7-2, July, 2005, Lake Ontario bay, 20+ FOW, 10" Berkley Power Worm - black, 1/2 oz. TT bullet weight - free, late afternoon on a clear blue day.
10.25 largemouth, jig n pig, Purtis Creek St. Park, Texas, ealy December, blue bird day, 11:00 am. Only caught 5 fish that day on 5 different lures.
Smallmouth 4#, Wolf Creek power plant, Kansas, noonish, zara spook, February, cloudy, and caught a bunch of fish that day.
Biggest smallmouth was last march on the juniata around Newton Hamilton. 4.5lb on a smoke 3in gitzit. Funny thing was it was about 25yds away from the ramp where i hooked her.
Biggest largemouth was last yr in Late april at Raystown lake. 25 feet of water with drowned wood on bottom, DT16 in bluegill. That one was about 4lb. I think it was very respectable considering the lake.
Smallmouth: 21", 5# 8oz. caught at 20,000 acre Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia. Lure: 4" Zoom curlytail worm (cherryseed) on a split shot rig in 10' depth. Mid-day clear sky, about 60 degrees.
4/20/2001
Largemouth: 25 1/2", 10# 6oz. caught at 62 acre Chris Green Lake, Albemarle County, Va. Lure: Zoom Finesse worm (watermelon/red) weedless wacky rigged in 5' depth. Mid-day, clear sky about 70 degrees.5/17/2006
Longest bass: Largemouth, 27", 10# 4oz. caught at 845 acre Briery Creek Lake, Virginia. Lure: Zoom Finesse worm (watermelon/red) weedless wacky rigged in 4' depth. Mid-day, cloudy, about 60 degrees.

Amen to that...
Bill, impressive list man. I've fished Okeechobee and Kissimmee quite a few times, never nailed a trophy. What about PB NY bass?

WildBill, can you give us month of the year on those?
Let's definitely get the month, if not date, in there. Todd, can you edit your initial post to add month of the year?
Don 't have picture of it.

Bait = Rapala Shad Rap SR7 SD
Rod = Berkley Ligthing Rod LR16 5 '6"

My personal best largemouth was caught upriver at Choke Canyon while I was fishing for white bass. It was about 3 PM and partly cloudy and the air tempature was around 85 degrees. The water was prob 75 degrees. I was using a strike king 4s crankbait in sexy shad. I caught this bass of a submerged tree near a river bend. This bass weighed 6.85 lbs...

2. What Bait did you catch it on? custom hair jig with Super Pork trailer.
3. General time of day and weather? (was it noon on a bluebird sky day? After dark on a cloudy night after a storm front?) March 3rd, 1994 was raining, light wind and perfect pre spawn conditions, water temperature 62 degrees. This bass was the 3rd of 4 bass I would catch that morning around 9 o'clock. I tried to catch the 5th bass to fill out my limit, but was concerned about keeping the bass healthy and stopped fishing to get the bass weighed. It's hard to imagine, I was dissapointed at that time the bass wasn't 20 lbs+ and released it soon after weighing. Lake Castaic, CA.
WRB
Castaic (main lake) was at it's prime in 1994 and has never regained it's giant bass population, since striped bass were accidently introduced.

biggest I have heard of out of the lake is 5 lbs.
5 lb. Largemouth,caught on a Zoom Trick Tail worm,watermelon/chart. color.It was caught in June,approx. 10 am 2007.
February 3rd 2007 was a nasty cold morning with Northwest winds at 15-20 mph, a slight misty rain falling, and temperatures in the middle 30's. After having launched out of Jack's 944 Marina I made the short (2 minutes) run to the mouth of Bull creek trying to stay out of the wind and some what warm. Having rounded the corner I dropped the trolling motor, picked up my Rat-L-Trap rod again with the thought in mind of keeping moving and staying warm. My third cast was into the mouth a cut leading to a boat shed which I knew had stumps on the west side, after turning the handle 4 or 5 time my trap stopped solid, I tell Pat d**n to close to the stumps so I push the trolling motor handle towards the mouth of the cut while stepping on the switch. At the exact same instance my line starts zinging towards deeper water rod all bowed up & drag slipping; I immediately scream at Pat get the net. By now the boat is moving off to my left the bass is moving off to my right and I'm nearly on my knees in front of the console with the upper third of the rod in the water. Pat net in hand is now on the front deck killed the trolling motor and with a swift motion netted the hawg; which ends up weighing in at 12 pounds 8 ounces.
Florida Strain LM - 9.9lbs
Caught on Lake Fork in April 1992. After tiring of watching my boating partner that day try to bed ****** the same fish for an hour or so, I tied on an 1/8 jighead, rigged up a skirted twin tail grub (pumpkin/pepper), and tossed it out into the middle of the channel. Best comment of the day came with a texas drawl "Luckiest Yankee I ever saw.... Catchin' a big old bass on a sissy bait!". Thanks for the memories Rick!
Northern Strain LM - 24.5" (no scale in the boat).
Caught on Clear Lake (198 acres), Mecosta Co. Michigan in August 1990. Middle of a bright sunny day on a Rapala Shad Rap in about 15 FOW.
Smallie - 6.85lbs.
Caught off the end of the "C" Dock, White Lake, Michigan. Size of lake is over 3,000 acres and connected to Lake Michigan. June, 2004. Fishing a 5" Kalins grub (avacado/red flake) on an 1/8 darter head. Late morning off the end of the slabwood piles in about 12 FOW.
The smallie was the only one of these caught during a bass tournament. It took the big bass pot for the day, and anchored a five bass limit with a total weight of over 17lbs, good for first place. Nice Paydday!
5-9 caught this past Sunday at about 9:30 in the morning on a chrome and blue rattle trap.
It was about 70 deg outside and the water was 62 deg.

Tommy, just a couple more important questions:
How many chips in the finish of that gold chromed Trap were there?
What color were the pipes on the boat shed?
Was the coffee still warm when you finally sat down after collecting yourself?
;D
Man, after reading that, my fingers are numb, and I can almost smell that bass.
How many chips in the finish of that gold chromed Trap were there?
None it was a brand new Trap

I can almost feel it -adjusting for the 6 or so extra pounds I've never experienced lol.
Well my pb small mouth is only 4lbs 5oz, but I have caught 4 of them at this weight, I just can't break that number. I caught two of them this last season within 20 minutes of each other on the rage craw and jig. Now I've caught lots of upper 3 pounders to 4lbs 3 oz. I just don't know why I can't beat 4lbs 5oz.
My pb largemouth is 5lbs 14oz caught on a jig and craw. Now I've caught a lot of small 5 pounders and high end 4 pounders but I can't seem to break 5lbs 14oz.
Oops guess I have to add more info:
Guess I'll go with my most recent Smallmouth @4lbs 5oz> 3,500 acre lake, May 2009, 8 feer of water, Black 3/8oz jig with an bama craw colored rage craw I believe, at around 9:00am, overcast and 15mph winds, clear water.
Largemouth 5lbs 14 oz in a river, April 2008 I believe, 1/4 0z green bitsy bug jig with a pumkenseed craw, 5 feet of water, 11:00 a.m tanic colored water. Flooded conditions, snow melt run off.
8 pounder
Caught it on a white stanley ribbit frog on 20# braid with my diawa procaster on medheavy rod(my frogging stick)
There was about 15 min of daylight left at lads marina (California Delta). We were fishing the docks on the left side and there were mossbeds in the back of them so we trolled back there to fish it and on my 4th cast this big girl jumped 4 or 5 feet out of the water and instantly started peeling drag.Good thing i had that braid or she wouldve been the one that got away ;D oh and it was in early November
SmallMouth: Memorial day weekend (first day of season for us here in MN) 5.1lbs in about 1' of water on a current seam, caught on the longest river in North America. Hand Poured stickbait in salt and pepper. 6'6" m spinning gear with 6lb mono. There was a few tense moments during the fight, since she immediatley bolted for the strong current in the middle of the channel, which happened to be where my boat was positioned. I had the 109lb thrust tm on high trying to hold off the rocks and trying to keep this crazy fish out of the tm.
LM was in November. white 1/2oz hidden weight sb with a white blade water temp was 42 degrees but we were on a warming trend sunny day. Burning the spinnerbait I caught a ton of fish that day doing that and she was the last one of the day 5.9lbs 21" The lake was ice covered 4 days later. I also caught a 5.6lber this year about 2 days before ice up on the same bait, same lake, same technique.
just over 5# smallmouth....georgian bay....chartreuse spinnerbait, last cast of the day at dusk!
I usually don't weigh. But honest guesses. Best smallies were over 4, and close to 5.
Large was without a doubt over 6 and probably close to 7 which is huge up here. On a 10" power worm while "musky fishing" early in the season.
Hope to break 6lb smallie this year by hitting the places that have them in numbers.

I'm thinking about going the guide route on St Clair, Traverse bays, and Burt/Mullet. While I'm sure you can go, and catch fish, I want to maximize my time on the water. A guide could really help do that.
Will guides typically let you carry a GPS and mark spots?

If the guide is worth his money and you let him know before he shouldnt have a problemw ith you marking spots afterall you could hire him with the express purpose of helping you find fishing spots.

So does paying $150-250 to go fishing with someone.
What is the point of a guide if not to provide insight on how/where to catch fish on a strange and/or large body of water.
Most spots on the great lakes you would NEVER find without some sort of GPS coordinates
Whatever, if you fish t's there that is cheating in my book. Real original Wesley, lol. :
QuoteWhatever, if you fish t's there that is cheating in my book. Real original Wesley, lol. :
Well you are entitled to your opinion just like everyone else. But I can tell you lots of tournament anglers hire guides to help them out on lakes they arent familiar with its not against the rules so its not cheating.
Now to get the thread back on topic.
As long as my guide has the " spots " thats all that matters to me. Its 8 hrs drive from my house so im going to fish and have fun and fish.

My best LB was 23", 7.5 lbs, caught on a 810 acre lake, June 17th over 27ft of water on a Chrome/Black Risto Rap. Fish were schooled up chasing shad over an old creek channel.
My best largemouth was 7lbs, 12oz. I caught it last March on the Farm 13 side of Stick Marsh. As a bass pro would say:
I caught that monster in a stump field in about 2 feet of water. The water temperature was 72 degrees, no wind and a bright sunny day at about 3PM.
I was able to get that bucketmouth to the boat because I was using my Johnny Morris Sigature Series left handed reel with a 6.4 to 1 gear ratio. Though intense the battle was short due to the 7' Medium Heavy action Bass Pro Shops Extreme rod that I was using. I was not worried about the XPS 14lb test line breaking on the hookset or through abraision on the stumps because experience has taught me that this line is pound for pound the toughest yet easiest to cast fluorocarbon line on the market! Though the fish was an acrobat the Gamakatzu 4/0 EWG worm hook never came unbuttoned! This huge fish just couldn't turn down a tantalizing treat like the Zoom Baby Brush Hog in Junebug! Junebug is a fantastic color for those tanic colored Florida lakes! I was able to imediately tell that the fish had eaten the bait due to the density of the 3/16oz Tru Tunsten bullet weight that I was using with this Texas Rig. With Tru Tungsten I never miss a bite! Woo Hoo.....NEVER GIVE UP!!!!!!!

Sounds like you have it down, now you just need these companies to pay you for that spill.
My buddy started putting stickers on his new boat and I started ribbing him about it. Then he made the suggestion that I should put some stickers on my new boat. I told him I will put stickers on my boat when they pay me! I am certain that any sponsor would get their money's worth from me!!!!

Wow - great fish. That's less than 2oz under the KY state record. Did you weigh it on a certified scale? or just your personal scale? You might have had a state record...
hmm...Perhaps a picture would clear this up...
