Hey guys, I just finished reading Doug Hannon's book "Big Bass Magic". He says many things that go against conventional wisdom of bass fishing, mainly regarding big fish. I will reveal these after the survey is over. I would like to ask you guys a few questions about your PB Largemouth to help me compile data to prove or disprove Hannon's statements. Please copy and paste the questions with your answers.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I just finished totaling up the results so far, but feel free to keep replying, I will do a final total later. Here are the current results:
Average depth caught in: 7.135 fow
Rattles/hinges vs silent: 19 said no rattles, 7 said rattles were present
Natural vs unnatural colors: 19 natural colors, 7 unnatural colors
Moon phases: New moon: 6 First Quarter: 5 Full Moon: 7 Last Quarter: 2
So far Hannon has been spot on. I guess thats why they called him the bass professor! He said 8 fow was ideal for big bass, and the "good" depth for big bass ranged from 3 to 13 fow. He said big bass were more likely to hit a naturally colored silent lure, which matches up with the results so far. He said new and full moon were best for fishing, though the results here do not decisively show that. Hopefully more replies will help make the moon phases more conclusive.
Thanks, and feel free to keep replying, like I said I will do a final tally this weekend.

I haven't read his book, so just a quick question. Did he mention that depth in relation to Florida reservoirs specifically or in general?

That same question crossed my mind, too. He never mentioned depth relative to anything, however he did mention catching the fish that helped compile his data set in all sorts of bodies of water, from small ponds to huge lakes. I think that this would help level out the data, but I still think it would be different in california or other places with super deep bodies of water.

Well, here's a tidbit from a book that I have read.
"Most of the time you will catch the majority of big bass in 10 feet or water or less, year-round. These big fish are up to feed. When they decide to eat, they have to abandon some of their avenues of escape." (Bill Siemantel/ Big Bass Zone)
While I personally don't agree 100% with it- having caught a few what I'd consider nice-sized fish on the top, the bottom and every depth in between, I still think that's an interesting observation.
Fish was caught in about 8-10 feet of water
No hinges or rattles
Natural color - watermelon seed
Caught near the new moon
How deep was the fish caught? About 2 ft.
Did the lure contain rattles or have hinges? No. Jitterbug.
Was the lure a natural color (brown, green) or was it an unnatural color (chartreuse, orange)? Black
If possible, what moon phase was your PB caught during? Unsure
Doug Hannon fished in Florida, natural lakes or low land reservirs for Florida strain LMB.
The data will reflect this regioanal area and bass species. Collecting random data for anglers that fish in deep structured lakes for bass species that differ form FLMB in shallow lakes will have little facts to base any theory on.
Moon phase is an importnat factor during pre spawn though post spawn as it affect tidal movement and animal activity levels, bass are animals. The moon also affects summer bass during night periods, bright moon light helps a sight feeding predator.
I have caught 5 FLMB over 17 lbs.
All were caught between Jan to March.
Depth of water between 15' to 20'
Water temperature between 58 to 65 degrees.
Lures was hair jig with pork trailer; colors brown, purple, black.
Time between 8A to 10A
Moon phase; within 3 days before or after the full moon.
Lake type; highland deep rocky structure.

I read that ... just making sure.

One has to remember when Doug Hannon wrote this that a lot of people were preaching "you have to fish deep structure to succeed". He basically said all things being equal, the bass is a shallow water sunfish and that is where you will find them, again all things equal. It is relative and the bass is highly adaptive. Their comfort zone is making short bursts to kill and eat meal expending the least effort as possible. Where better than sitting behind a shallow stump or log waiting for a bluegill or shad to come by? If you take away the deep man made lakes and focused on natural lakes and riverrun lakes, you will see what he says is mostly true and even if you add the deep lakes, it still is mostly true.

If you don't know, or don't remember, the moon phase when you caught your personal best go to this site: http://www.moonconnection.com/moon_phases_calendar.phtml and enter the month and year when you caught your fish in the calendar. Make sure you choose the correct hemisphere. Then look for the day of the month. If you aren't familiar with the symbols used for the different phases, click on "moon phases explained" in the menu on the left.

I have read Hannon's book and it was interesting. His opinions and observations are clearly made from his experiances fishing weedy shallow florida lakes. A lot of his opinions would not be the same had he grew up out west fishing deep clear resivoirs. Bass do not act the same in different types of bodies of water. While some of their habits seem to be the same others change depending upon location. It appeared as though he based his opinions on bass behavior, from a very specific environment.

Thanks for all the replies. You guys brought up some very good points about Hannons observations being geared to shallow flordia lakes, and can't be compared to many of the western lakes, or even northern lakes. Either way, thanks for chiming in, it was still cool to see some of the qualities of the lures you guys caught your pb on. I dont have the exact nubmers but I think natural colors beat out unnatural by about a 70/30 split, and roughly the same for silent vs rattles, with silent winning. Thanks again!

If possible, what moon phase was your PB caught during? Unknown. It was August the 3rd at 3 in the afternoon.
A few thoughts on this as I started to read the book after reading this thread to see if I could understand it myself.
It seems that out of all the variables included in your questionnaire “depth” would be the most difficult to quantify for several different reasons. (yet oddly is only quantifiable)
The first; would be part of the human element in that most don’t know the exact depth of the fish. Most are estimates at best and the actual depth could vary several feet in either direction. This can lead to variances in the data pool and would need a large set of data in order to eliminate some of the inaccuracies.
Critical and less quantifiable would be the great geographic differences as others have mentioned between different coasts, even different ecosystems within the same area. Variables too numerous to count will change the depth at which the bass are feeding at, water quality, traffic, temperature, clarity, bottom composition, time of year etc.
Taking into account that in his book he stated: “…large bass feed primarily in a depth range centering at 8 feet and ranging 5 feet on either side; in other words a 3 to 13 foot depth range.” Pg. 35 BBM
If you were to take a large enough data set, such as the whole of Bass Resource data on PB’s, removing outliers and such data such as topwater in 35 ft, spawn in 1 fow, etc. and performed a statistical analysis on the remaining data I am still fairly confident that you would in fact find that the data would fall in that very same depth range of 8 fow with a 5 ft. deviation. While it may be true that most of the big fish come out of these deviations, it does not necessarily mean that the biggest fish of any population will in fact come out of that depth range.
In addition, this way of thinking also assumes that everything will fall under this perfect normal distribution/Gaussian distribution since we in fact did remove the outliers which technically are a sub-populations that has been removed since it does not fit the model... but really should very well influence it.
I guess long story short- you will need a ton data here and to get the real determination of that data will have to put a ton of work into the statistical analysis of it. I think it would be really neat if Bass Resource was able to collect that data from individual members at signup or by other means as a way of compiling that data for you. There could be data sets available already however- I would think states with great Fishery mgmt. such as Texas may have some available however it may take a bit of research.
Also, butter milk. Not bad to drink-strangely satisfying and not just for marinating any longer.
