Ya' know, most of what I do..... fishing in places that hold a lot of big fish.... fishing a LOT.... fishing with methods proven to catch big fish... just makes it inevitable that I'm going to catch some big fish.
I tell guys all the time, giving all the same great blessings I have had with this stuff, they would likely do just as well, if not better. Seriously.
But you wanna' here me brag about something ??? Okay, I KNOW how to play a fish ! No.... I mean, I REALLY know how to play a fish ! It's like I do it without thinking. It's either ripping drag, or its coming in right now. And I don't care how light the tackle, or how big the fish. It's all really the same thing anyway. You have a clutch (your drag system) and a load (the fish) and if your gear is solid, and your drag is smooth, that fish will eventually wear out. Also in your favor, most fish weigh almost "zero" lbs, in the water.
My two best points of advice when fighting a fish is;
1) Don't reel if the fish is taking drag... especially with a spinning reel.
2) If a fish stops taking drag, get on his arse RIGHT NOW !
NEVER allow a stalemate. Remember, you could pull a small boat in with the pole your holding, if the motor is turned off.
Okay, so that's what I'm the shiz-nit at
What aspects of fishing are you really good at ?
{please throw modesty to the wind :-)
Curious,
Fish
I'm good at pulling small boats in with the pole in my hands even IF the motor is running.
You should be fishing for Orca's LOL
Peace,
fish
PS, Hey Cart, that sure is one funny looking Giraffe in your Avatar LOL
I'm REALLY good at telling stupid jokes... such as
What do you call a deer with only one eye?
Give up?
I have no eye deer Get it?
It's just about time to change it.
Fish Chris by the looks of the big fish your holding you"ve got to be really good at playing fish, congrats on that talent. what I'm really good at is letting them get away.
I think cart7t's Giraffe is in the middle of the rut.
The only thing that comes to mind that I'm really good at is cranking bandit 200's over the top of weeds. For some reason I have a good feel with just hitting the tops of the weeds and getting strikes. I know it sounds silly and simple, but that's what I'm good at.
QuoteI'm good at pulling small boats in with the pole in my hands even IF the motor is running.
;D ;D
I'm really good at fighting fish too. Agree with you on both points, except for one part of #1 -drag. I don't use drag on a spinning reel. I never have, and just can't let a mindless box of gears give line for me. That's my job. I can take the line as far to the limit as I choose and give only when I need to. I can relax tension some when I want to put a stale-mating fish off balance for a moment.
I also love fighting fish on fly tackle. At first it feels like you have less control, until you get used to it and realize you have more control, especially in moving water.
Lessseee...I'm a die-hard fisherman, until I get hungry. But give me a sandwich and LOOK OUT! I'm back in business. 8-)
I have a bunch!
Instinctively knowing what not to do, then doing it!
Coming up with grand plans for a lake/bait/technique, and then doing terrible!
Catching 4-7 lbers. You can have all your stinking 15+'s but I'll get on them sweet 5lbers all day long, lol.
Being way out of position when that fish finally eats and getting a Richard Simmons hookset on her.
Missing fish
Arguing with lake staff
Hitting trout boats with swimbaits as they drive over the point I'm fishing.
Sleeping
Im extremely good at watching movies
Beating the ever loving crap out of rods, reels, and baits
Drinking orange juice
Making fun of idiots
Having buddies that actually catch big fish ;D
I am good at flipping, won me a competition at a Bassmaster Elite Series event $25 to bass pro. Went 9 for 10 on the small target in the back.
Im really good at casting i can put any bait in any little hole, Ive just been good ever since i got my first baitcaster. I owe it all in part to my love for shimano curados man they are the best and you cant beat the price or the ease of maintanance
Bizz
I guess we have caught some big fish, but you forgot to say quoting movies and losing lots of money in baits!
i'm good at getting my expensive lures stuck in trees. : [
even if the lure isn't expensive, i can't stand it!!!
I'd have to say fightin fish with "light" tackle..I use to go deepsea fishing with my bass and trout rigs..people on the allday boat Hated me.. ;D
Walkin' the dog.
I can work a spook for 6-7 hours straight, and down here in florida, there are many days when I do it too!
Putting teener's in the boat. LMB over 15 lbs are very rare fish, you can't afford to lose any big bass you hook...period.
This is simply the difference between success and failure. I consider myself to be as good as any trophy bass fisherman out there and I have lost few. Lets make that 3 in over 40 years of pursuing giant bass and I remeber every moment in full color. The fact that I have put hundreds in the boat, the 3 misses still huant me.
How do you prevent from making a mistake; be prepared, check knots, change line, rod giudes and use only sharp premium hooks. Tune your tackle, reel drags and fish like the next cast is the fish.
Position yourself to be able to land the bass, keep it under control and in front of you, every second and put the bass in the boat as quickly and calmly as possible.
Giant bass can only fight a few minutes at the longest, stay cool, there will be a lot of time to celebrate or ponder what went wrong.

I'm good at floating a worm, one of my favorite tactics
and lately I've been pretty good at getting skunked by the fish
Right on. Thanks for all the replies guys. Some funny, some serious, but all, fun to read :-)
Oh and BTW Donbeatya, that is certainly something to be proud of. But since you mention it, I have to say, I am probably the worst caster on this forum ! Seriously, I suck at casting ! Why do you think I only use a spinning rod ??? With a baitcaster, I'll either shoot it straight in the air.... or straight down at the water 6 feet in front of me, and either way, I'd be lucky not to get a backlash.
Even with Spinning gear, my acuracy is spotty at best. Then again, I've only been fishing for 40 years..... So if you give me 40 more, I might have it down ;-)
All I can say is, try being born left handed, then being forced to be right handed, by old school parents. Oh well.
Peace,
Fish
Fishing the HBC4 ?

For the short time I've been bass fishing seriously I think I'm good at flipping. By no means an expert but from the first time I tried it I feel I was average. Was just never that hard for me.
i have been pretty good at visiting your site and learning from all the cool stuff there. thanks chris.
i am also good at making sure my daughter catches more than me when we fish together.
There is not a person alive, better than me at finding submerged logs and trees with a jig. Not one person...... >
Dobbing.
Well, seriously, I like to think I'm good at spinnerbaits. They are my favorite to fish.

That is something to be proud of right there. The more you post the more I hope of getting the honor to meet you one day. You area class act.
Spending money
I really enjoy teaching. Bringing people to their next level.

LOL. Seems you're like me. Good at making excuses.
On a serious note, I'm great at enjoying myself while fishing. And that's the bottom line.
That's what I like about Chris he's gone for months then appears out of nowhere tickles the brain then leaves again.
How y'all are
I'm not going to get to philosophical because I'm a simple man it's
Texas Rigged Plastic Worms!
That's me, give me a plastic worm that I can Texas Rig and I'll catch bass anywhere.
Everything!
backlashing
catching stick fish
hooking up stumps and rocks
positive note- boat placement and ideas (though ideas sometimes doesnt pay out)
I am gifted like Christmas ;D
Relating to fishing, and comparing myself to the best I've seen in the different aspects of our sport, I'm good at a lot of things but not REALLY good at anything. I'm a jack of all trades and a master of none.
Welcome back, Fish Chris! Peace to you as well.
I enjoy - and have been successful at - a lot of things relating to our sport of fishing. If I had to pin it down to one, I'd have to say that I specialize in offshore structure fishing for smallmouth bass. And I'm pretty good at it.
QuoteI'm great at enjoying myself while fishing. And that's the bottom line.
Amen to that, brutha
QuoteBeing way out of position when that fish finally eats and getting a Richard Simmons hookset on her.
Now that's funny. Been there a few times.
The thing that I am really good at is dodging baits that coming flying back at me after setting the hook on some monster water.

I'm not so good at that...last year on an awesome topwater bite, I got a spook in the nipple when my cousin missed a fish....can you say ouch?!? :-?
I feel I'm skilled at a variety of techniques and have the ability to adapt and change and get bites.
I'm a grinder. When it's tough fishing I seem to be able to kick and fight and always bring a limit to the scale.
Everything....but I'm illiterate and a pathological liar....
Forgetting the drain plug and the sunscreen. And using colorful metaphors when the wind is blowing me around a lake.
I'm a work-in-progress. I'm comfortable with several presentations, but I don't feel I have a go-to yet. I'd say I'm really good at being persistent. Maybe it's my pride. When I hit the lake, I'm going to catch fish. I may hit several spots. I may change lures frequently. But I will catch fish.
I tend to be real good at figuring out what a good pattern is and then get outfished by my partner using that exact one...
QuoteWalkin' the dog.I can work a spook for 6-7 hours straight, and down here in florida, there are many days when I do it too!
Ooooooooohhh...I like the thought of that!
Tossing a jig.
I think I'm really good at adapting.
When the lakes are frozen or bass fishing is closed on them I go to the river and catch bass, eyes, muskies, pike, and cats. Part of living here in Wisconsin is being a dang good multi species fisherman or you aren't going to do alot of fishing. If I am somewheres I need a boat and I don't have one I make the best of it and catch fish from shore.
I also think I'm pretty good at catching fish from shore, a big part of shore fishing is being able to get away from the crowd or otherwise do something different. I think I'm really good at that. For example if there is 5 people fishing near me from shore and they are all throwing senko type baits, I'll play around with something else until I get the fish figured out.
I do real well taking my nephew to fishing spots and watching him catch all the fish even if we are in the same boat together. ;D ;D
hooking into someone else's old discarded fishing line at the bottom of a lake. I am seriously on like a 7-trip streak right now and ive been jumping around lakes.
Breaking rod tips.
But on a positive note I have great confidence. On the verge of cocky but not because I have the same mentality if I am fishing by myself or with my best buddy who doesnt care. I can try a technique I never used and fish it with confidence. Most of my buddies have to watch somebody (usually me) catch fish with a new bait to get confidence. My secrets to getting confidence in new baits. I am talking NEW baits or techniques like a chatterbait or swimbait. Not a new color crankbait.
1. Try them in places with lots of fish. Ponds are great for breaking in new techniques. You get confidence after catching a few nice ones. It doesnt have to be a loaded little farm pond even decent small private lake that is easier to fish than a big lake helps. Creeks are great for trying smaller baits.
2. If you dont get to try them in a pond try a new bait in a spot you whacked them on something else. We fished a bank and caught fish on a spinnerbait and we went back down it and I put on a chatterbait. The rest is history and my buddy was asking for a chatterbait very quickly.
3. Know when to throw them and what to throw them on. I always see what action rods and lines throw baits before I try them. Also I look for the times the baits are best and when they are worst. When trying new baits look for times they are supposed to excel and avoid times they arent as good.
Just my 2 cents
I am really good at being a versatile angler. I have said before I am comfortable with all techniques and I am. I guess I would have to say deep water structure fishing is my strongest. My favorite is pitchin and spinnerbaiting shallow cover.
I rock at skipping docks. when I fish with 2 people in the boat I have to do a kind of upside down, leaning, over my head cast from my left side so i don't smack the guy in front of me but I cant hit the motor either. I will put 9 out of 10 casts under a pontoon, between the dock post and the boat. we have made a game of calling our casts, good times. I am also stubborn and have great drive. I will fish for 8 hours before i realize I haven't eaten since dinner the night before. and I am a fat guy!
QuoteForgetting the drain plug and the sunscreen. And using colorful metaphors when the wind is blowing me around a lake.
Me too, I am a pro at forgetting the drain plug.
I am good at avoiding the skunk. I always seem to catch something...now if I could only make the fish bigger ;D
I am the master of toads in the summer slop...end of story
Four pages and no one is good at drinking beer?
I'm very disappointed in some of you. :
Buzzbait fishing. Always have had great luck with them. Funny thing is I use a Wal-mart Strike King right out of the box....go figure. Chartruse green with a red bleeder hook.
I would have to say I am really good at fishing docks with a gold senko and texas rigged trickworm around the pilings.
For being 13, working a baitcaster!
QuoteTexas Rigged Plastic Worms!

setting the hook and turning my trolling motor really fast and make people fall out of the boat
I'm really good at getting my fishing buddies to curse at me. Sometimes when I'm catching most of the fish I like to rub it in a bit, just for kicks.
"Its real nice of you guys to come along and watch me catch these fish today" ;D
Casting ridiculously far and casting accurately
Having confidence that I'm doing/using the right thing
I can usually always manage to scrape up some fish even if they're not big
Netting fish (I found this out last summer when I got my a#$ handed to me by my boater at a tournie on the potomac)
I have mastered the art of catfish angling.
toss the line in the water sit back and start pounding down the cold beer. (shore fisherman ofcourse)
catching the fish is another story but i got the angling part down pat. ;D
now im workin on holding onto a my beer in one hand while lure fishing for bass, without spilling my beer. this one will takes some serius practice to master.
My strong point is pitchin' soft plastice into tiny holes and pockets. I LOVE POWER FISHING! 7' 6" H/F Crucial rod, Abu Garcia Revo STX, 25lb Fluoro, Gamakatsu superline hooks and Tungsten weights. Once that fish even thinks of taking my bait, you better believe it's coming in the boat for a quick pic, LOL!
QuoteBeing way out of position when that fish finally eats and getting a Richard Simmons hookset on her.
LOL....Whenever this happens(to often ) my fishing buddy asks me If I'm going to go home and squat to pee. lol
Don't know how good I really am but, I love fine tuning presentations. From choosing baits, rod, reel, and line.
I fish a tube like its nobody's business. I dont know why I am so good at it. My buddies will use the same rig as me but I will still outfish 20-1. I am great at most soft plastics but man give me a gitzit and I will fish you out of the boat. However give me a crankbait and I might as well cut the crankbait off and cast a bare line.
My #1 fishing strength is plucking fish out of a spot others missed. You get to be good at that by having the slowest boat in the tournament, be having intimate knowledge of the areas I fish, and by having a good grip on many different techniques.
I am really good at congratulating my partner when he catches a big fish. I've been in the boat for a lot, and I like to always make sure they appreciate what they've done and know how much I'd like to be in there shoes, just once.
I'm pretty good with the dip-net too, I've had a lot of practice.
I would consider myself decent with Jigs :
My favorite situations would have to be:
Summer- Water is around 72-76F, throwing a 1/8-3/16oz jig into THICK cover in about 8 or 10 feet. I let it go through every limb until WHAM! fish on!
Winter- Water is 40~, lobbing a 1/2oz black and blue jig on to a 16 foot point and crawling it into 26-29 feet. Caught some nice'uns that way.
Needless to say Ive got at least one jig tied on at all times.
Breaking things, losing things. These are a couple things I really excel at.
Nobody is better at breaking glass than me
Digging out backlashes.
Hanging the anchor on the bottom.
Finding bobbers.
Can't say I'm really good at any one thing on the water. But I will say this. I haven't seen anybody that is a efficient as my buddy and I at getting in and out of the boat ramp. I mean we have it down to a science. At the most we tiy up a boat ramp for 20sec at the most. That includes backing the boat in starting the engine and getting the boat off the trailer. Between my buddy and I we can both back the truck and trailer into some pretty impossible spots.
Pretty good thing to be REALLY GOOD at if there is 20-30 boats waiting at the launch.

NOT CATCHING FISH LOL Im really good at fishing in heavy cover
Retrieving lures that I've broken off. One day last year I was fishing into the wind and getting a lot of backlashes, which of course weakened my line so on the next cast my spinnerbait would snap off mid cast and go flying. Happened at least 3 times, and every time I snagged the line and got my lure back a few casts later. Another time I was fishing in a pretty good chop from a canoe and wedged my DT6 in a rock pile. It was way too hard to position the boat to try to get it free, so I broke it off. Went back the next day when there was no wind or boat traffic so the lake was smooth as glass and I was able to spot my lure and nudge it free with the canoe paddle.
