So does any one have any techniques they are gonna focus on mastering this season. I haven't put a jig down in 2 years so this year I'm gonna try and not use the jig and focus on my finesse work. I have a kayak this season to so it's gonna open up a whole new door for me also. Now for this ice to melt
The early season is alreday here in the Mid South. When your season opens I STRONGLY recommend
the Red Eye Shad and Smithwick Rogue. I don't know exactly when the topwater bite will catch fire, but
when it starts: MegaStrike Cavitron, Zara Spook, Rage Shad & Menace. I think you should also consider
the NorthStar Original Swim Jig with the Menace as a trailer.
This year I am making myself learn to fish football head jigs. I just picked up 20 of them so I am stocked up. Just need to learn how to fish them the correct way.
I was planning on throwing more crankbaits this season as learning to use the dropshot more.

I have probably 30+ smithwick rogues it used to be all I fished the lipless and jerkbait is usually what I start my season with actually
I don't have many jigs, but I had some success last year. Planning to throw some more this year.
My 2013 goals are
Finesse - The Drop Shot. All stocked up on hooks and lures. I will use this each and every tournament.
Power - Chatterbait. I rely heavily on the Spinnerbait. I want to expand my horizon and get some more experience using this toy.
I spent much of this winter / off-season reading In Pursuit of Giant Bass by Bill Murphy.
I am going to devote at least this next fishing season to that end.
By learning the techniques he employs and adopting the mind set required to use those methods effectively, I'm hoping to see a whole "New" side to the waters that I have been fishing over the past few years.
And maybe while I'm at it, I'll sore-lip a few worth posting here.
Regardless of how it goes, I'm planning on posting a thread at the end of the year covering this venture.

Atta boy!
Get your stitchin' fingers ready!
I plan to substitute the Jika rig for some of the more basic jig applications. Before we get much in to prespawn patterns I want to reach back in time and reuse the old cold weather "jig and eel." That's one that I fished regularly but got away from.

Felix, with you being a co-angler, you'll be surprised how many fish you catch if your boater is using a spinner bait.

Punchin with a skirt on a t-rig
Shaky head, drop shot and Carolina rig, if I can use them as effectively as my spinner baits and T-rigs I will be happy.
This year joined a Bass club and wont always be beating the bank and I am excited about this, I hope to learn and do new things, I would like to try a chatter-swim and maybe a deeb diving crankbait.
My plan this year is to focus on jigs this year, specifically 1/4 & 5/16 Finesse Jigs. I've got my Falcon Eakins Jig rod, a Curado 50 E and I'll put 10 lb abrazx line on it and start fishing. Lets just find out how many times I get snapped off in gnarly cover.
I'll still throw my share of reaction baits, but when it is time to slow down, that will be the primary rig in my hands. At least that is the plan. For now.
My focus this year is going to be on the T-rig which iv never really used before.
Ive said it before, I want to improve my deep cranking and efficiency. I also am gonna concentrate alot more time on bama rigs and big swim baits.
This year I wanna try and learn to fish jigs and get more proficient at t-rigged soft plastics. I catch some on the t-rig but I feel like Im missing a lot. I think someone in another post said something about braid improving the sensitivty and making it easier to feel bites so maybe Ill try using braid for my jigs/worms. I also wanna catch something on a spinnerbait. Ive been fishing them a lot but for some reason never got a bite on them.

This was my plan except TW has had all their punch rig stuff on back order for months.
I fish for smallmouth in clear water.
The only thing that will be new to me is to try lipless crankbaits in my home water, never having thrown them much before. I appreciated the recent post on these cranks.
I used the Jika rig last year with some success but I'm not overly enthused by it. As Crestliner 2008 pointed out, it's nothing more than a real short dropshot rig. Aaron Martens mentioned in his article in the January "Bassmaster" that the line below the bait on his dropshot rig is, under certain conditions, no longer than the bait.
I'll be jig fishing more, having bought Do-It's Shake It jig head mold. I'll be dressing these with hair and rubber as well as using the jig head plain with a plastic bait.
Looking forward to a spinnerbait bite when the wind's up and the sun is out.
Regarding suspending jerkbaits, which is what I use early season . . . I came to the realization recently that I like to buy these as much as (many) women like to buy shoes!
To the other icebound anglers: We're not all that far away now!

I got into fishing last year and have bought gear and tackle willy nilly. I haven't really devoted much time to any one technique. I want that to change starting this spring. The problem is is that I'm not real sure what to start with. I fish a lake in central WV primarily that I've been told quite a few times is "tough to fish". I'm also a bank fisher 98% of the time. Every once in a while have a friend that I get to go out on a boat with. He's a diehard crankbaiter and never lets off the trolling motor.
I've been watching videos left and right, especially Glenn's, which are great by the way. I'm intrigued with learning to fish a fluke. I've tried it before but never had much luck. I'm also kinda leaning towards the basic Texas or split-shot rig. Or spinnerbaits. Or lipless cranks. Dropshot? Somebody help!
Start a new thread. It will get more hits that way
Last season I began using jigs with much success, this winter I practiced my pitching technique with a stepladder and a bucket, so I want to focus on flippin/pitchin more accurately.
I would like to use the Carolina Rig in deep water more effectively.
Also, I would like to use more crankbaits/jerkbaits.

Why not build your own? I dont know how much time you have to do it, but you can order the weights with the hub on it, or the hubs and skirts, or just the tabs...

That is building my own. The weights and hooks are what I'm waiting for. Must be a worldwide shortage of tungsten and steel

This was my plan also but I got it backwards and ended up wearing a skirt while punching other fisherman that were laughing at me. I'm going to flip and pitch lilly pads more this year.
deep water finesse fishing - drop shot

If you would have sewed up the hole in the front the laughing would have stopped.
I want to work on my jerkbait fishing mostly because I would like to do some cold water fishing this year.
I focused on square bills last year, so maybe some deep divers and lipless cranks this year. . . I haven't decided yet.
I am going to try for two things this year to master.
Last season was my first season back in a while so I mainly just threw cranks, but now I am going to try and venture.
For me it's topwater and spinnerbaits. I haven't had much luck with either of the two.
I have NEVER caught a bass on a topwater lure. Perhaps I will try this season.

Skirts don't have holes in the front. I know I have chased a lot of them. Now I'm just running from the rolling pin..... I fish too much at times.
Punching on the Potomac.
Zeka Rig.
Going to concentrate on jigs and pigs all year.
Throwing the jerkbaits more.
Alabama Rig
Carolina Rig
Flipping
Maybe dropshot
going to work on Jerkbaits this spring, Ledge fishing with Deep diving crankbaits, spinnerbaits and the Jika rig this year. May throw a couple other things in thier but that's my primary goals for this year
Ive stocked up on: jerk baits, deep cranks and built an Alabama rig. Hopefully I become decent using these. I want to master the spinnerbait. Im decent using it but its not very effective. So there must be something missing from my presentation.
Being a beginner I want to master the basic rigs: texas and the C rig. Meanwhile summer is around the corner here in Puerto Rico so I can work on becoming good at catching fish in deep water. Thats where the Deep cranks and the C rig will shine. Right now soft plastics texas rigged are killers here in the numbers department. not so much in the size department.
I consider myself a power fisherman. I want to become proficient on finesse fishing so that I can become a good all around angler.
Swim jigs
Buzzbaits
Hardbaits in general as I fish mostly soft plastics
Deep water fishing, Drop shotting, deep cranks. Also Chatterbaits

I have caught two and one was less than a pound. Both were on a jitterbug
"Sharpen" my mental game! When the bite gets slow don't just chuck and wined, fish the
moment, adjust to the conditions.

Just remember to keep an open mind and pay attention to what the boater is doing. You will learn a lot by watching. Tourney fishing is a different demon and you need to get used to it.
Good luck.

fishingskirts.com has everything you need to build your own. It's good quality and you can get exactly what you want.
I plan on working jigs heavily.
JIGS
CAROLINA RIG
TOPWATER
WORMS - RIBBON AND PADDLE TAIL STYLE
CREATURE BAITS
All I have used a tiny, little bit, with good success, but I always go to my "go-to" baits right away and sometimes, just don't use other things.

Ive read that book 2x this winter also im finishing up Big bass zone
Im doing the same thing this year
. Ill be sure post whats going on as well.. its going to be fub learning these techniques out.on the water!!
for me def. finesse fishing i don't even own a spinning reel or rod, and there have been days fishing with my buddy when the finesse techniques are the only way to catch em.
Drop shot
Jigs
Swimbaits
Crankbaits
Chatterbaits
Tubes
I fish with these once and a while with some success but i never stick with them.

Cool - I know I'm really looking forward to it as well.
I'll admit, it will be hard to pass up on the shallow bite that comes each spring in lieu of staying out on the deeper pre-spawn and post-spawn staging areas.
But it will get dramatically easier to do if I hang a couple of the kind of bass I'm hoping to.

Flippin and Pitchin
Trying to make myself try other techniques and not just put them down and pick up a plastic worm when I don't get bit after five minutes.

This is what my partner does and he always seems to outfish me.
I'm going to spend more time cranking...even if he is whoopin up on me.
Drop shotting -- which I've never done -- and shakey head which I rarely do. This season I plan on doing more of both.
And after watching a bunch of the MLF, skipping a jig under a dock would have to be another one for me.
I am going to work on fishing with a jig. I haven't ever gotten them to work but i will this year.

Now that we've covered all of the sponsors... hahaha jk Red eyes and jerk baits are a must in early season.
After watching an episode of Timmy Horton I have placed an order for stuff to fish the MJ rig. He fished a lake that I also fish and he drilled them. Basically a Senko with a spinner tied into the end and ripping it thru grass.
I'm planning on expanding my skills and confidence what the baits that already I have but use infrequently. I'm gonna try the jika rig and switchblade jig this year I've seen a lot of good stuff about both. I also want to try some new things with my soft plastics and cranks. I am going to try carolina rigging crankbaits for example.
Definitely going to be dedicating some time to my finesse fishing, namely shaky heads and the split shot rig.
Treble hook lures in general I could use some practice on. Namely lipless cranks and jerkbaits.
I need to work on lipped cranks and jerkbait I haven't used them as much because I have been fishing a LOT of flooded timber and shallow really rocky water.
Working to get confident with flipping/pitching jigs towards heavier cover and fishing the drop-shot rig.
Also want to work on knot-tying, which is a weak spot. I can tie the palomar well, and a lame improved clinch. Want to nail those down while adding the uni-knot and some other loop.

Fishing is sooooooo!!!! much more enjoyable learning and using a variety of technics. Put away the senkos and learn to fish.
Jika jika and a bunch of experimental baits I am working on.
Jay-
Jig fishing. It is something that I have done very little of in the past, but something that has caught me some fish in the past. I want to use it much more and get much better at it.
Last year, it was the jig. I'd never properly committed to it before, and I didn't have any confidence with it. But, I tied one on one of my rods, and I kept one tied on the whole year. The work paid off. Other than my old standby (a weightless senko), a classic jig (primarily Northstar Black series) and trailer caught more and bigger fish than any other presentation. And, since most of the strikes I caught fish on were aggressive pops after the bait had hit bottom, I believe I'm missing far more than I'm catching. So, this year, I'm going to concentrate on catching those, as well.
In addition, I plan on working a shaky head, a flick shake (more), and a drop shot.
Other ideas I'm going to work on include a heavier drop shot weedless near or in cover (ala bubba shot), punching (once the weeds come in), jerk baits and lipless cranks (in the early season)...
Arggg. I'm having a hard time waiting for ice out...
Hoping to learn to fish with a jig this year. Also hoping to become better with a spinnerbait. I've never had so much as a bite on one.
This isn't anything "new" for me, but I'm looking forward to tossing some Rogues again. I threw them a ton back in the mid to late 90s, and caught tons of smallies with them. I got away from them, but I'm adding them back as soon as the ice melts.
oh forgot this one its called the boob tube rig!
Real close to retirement, so I want to go angling more often, and just enjoy the experience. But I also need to scratch these new hard baits I bought, the bait monkey really got me this winter, with all the sales.
