Any bass flyfisherman here? Need suggestions 2024

fishing user avatarnew2BC4bass reply :

on best places to buy a few flies. I'm not going to be buying a lot (at least not to start with ;D ) Asked elsewhere what flies to buy. I want to start with a few Clouser Minnows, Wooly Buggers, Lefty's Deceiver, poppers, and a couple flies from Black Lab Flies and Supplies.

Wouldn't hurt to pick up the Clouser Minnows from the originator since he lives here in PA, but I did find one place selling them for .50 cents less. I think I would prefer to buy from him now since the number of flies will be low. Like to support the local economy! :D

A search turned up at least one place with fly prices starting at .47 cents. I'd love to pay those kind of prices, but doubt they would be worth the .47 cents. :(

If you have any other suggestions for any other flies I should try, please don't hesitate to name them.

Thanks.

Oh yeah, this will mostly be for Largemouths in lakes. I do fish the Lehigh River on ocassion and the Delaware is also nearby, so I suppose some kind of crawdad imitation wouldn't hurt for the Smallmouths in these waters. Provided I can find a place on shore with enough room for me to cast. I need lots of room! :( All my fishing is from shore. My rod hasn't seen the water yet just to give you an idea of how poor my casting will be.

Sportsmen's Warehouse has a very nice fly selection in store. Letterbox type bins with a huge assortment of flies at @ $1 each. Other than that I can only suggest fly package deals from Bass Pro Shops online catalog.

I fly fish on all my fishing trips and purchase the majority of my flies and foam beetles at Sportsmen's Warehouse.

Unless someone is overstocked, most cheap flies are, well, cheap. Usually tied by 13-year old girls in Indonesia or somewhere. If you can find a local tier you'll probably pay more, but get a fly that will last for more than one fish.

I tie my own, and sell a few to some local folks who would rather buy mine than ones from the big chain stores, or even the local fly shop - most of those are tied overseas somewhere, too.

No help on where to buy the flies but, I will say that my regular fishing bud, is an old fly fisherman from Montana.  He bass fishes with me now and still uses his fly rod.  He gave up on the flies though.  He throws nothing but a 7" purple worm.  Here is one of his latest from about a month ago.

If you are a novice, you might actually be better off with some ratty, cheap flies to start things.  Then graduate to some better ones.  Just a thought.

I used to bass fish with a fly rod and this was my best fly type, I was unable to locate a place that has them, but I can't imagine that they no longer make them.

I had 3 colors, olive, black and purple. Olive was my favorite but I caught many fish on them all. I had a lot of fun fishing ponds with the fly rod, lots of big fish that were weary from pressure, but were willing to eat the subtle flies.

I'd be fishing a purple worm on any rod if I could catch fish like that.  Very nice.

Is it a worm and bare hook?  Or does he add a bit of weight to get it down?

Dwain - that fly looks like a cat toy... I'm going to take a few of my cats fake mice and see if they catch anything ha

I was just saying those "great deals" are cheap for a reason. For really good flies you'll have to pay more, or learn to tie your own.

Darhlberg Divers are another good one, I forgot about that.

I ordered some flies yesterday from Big Y Fly Co. They shipped the same day, and I got a nice email from the president of the company. Probably a stock reply, but nice nonetheless.

Unfortunately I also bought a custom made 3 wt. from another forum. The Internet is a great place to learn, but very bad on my purse strings. ::) Custom made sounds expensive, but it wasn't. Very reasonably priced rod. I could have paid an awful lot more for a factory rod.

Anyone familiar with Batson Forecast blanks? Seller said he hadn't weighed it yet, but believes it will weigh around 2 ounces, give or take a tad.

You guys are partially to blame. At least that is what I am planning on telling my wife. :D This is one of the sites that led me down the wrong path. The path to thinking I had to have quality equipment in order to enjoy fishing. LOL.

I think someone let the bait monkey loose in my house, then locked the door! ;D ;D

Bass flies can be expensive, but they are much easier to tie than trout flies....they bigger.  :)  If you mess with a fly rod long, learning to tie your own should be considered.  Bass Pro, Cabela's, Orvis and others carry an assortment.

As noted above, soft plastics can be fished on the long rod quite effectively.

The baitfish patterns developed for salt water work well on bass too.  Bunny strip patterns like the one above are one of my favorites.  You can catch decent fish on smaller flies but you will catch more, larger bass using flies approaching the size of those used with conventional tackle.

You can handle bass on most any size fly rod, but you cannot toss all size flies on one rod.  So, in my opinion, if you are limited to one fly rod for bass, error on the larger size.  You can toss small flies on a 7-wt but you will endanger the back of your head and the rod if you attempt to toss a weighted 6 inch bunny strip with a 2-wt.  :)

Bass aren't leader shy so a light tippet isn't necessary.  Six or seven feet of 10-12 pound test mono works well for a leader on a 7-wt.  A 7-wt is plenty rod to handle big fish and bulky flies yet it won't over power a 3 or 4 pounder like the one I'm holding.

I've had very good luck with bonefish flies for largemouth and smallmouth. They come in pretty natural crawfish colors and usually have bead eyes to help keep them down. Lots of them have something to help keep them from getting snagged or from catching weeds and they usually have stronger, bigger hooks than most flies. The fly that I use most often is called a bonefish slider http://www.saltwaterflies.com/bonefishslider.html

They look like they would be a very simple fly to tie but they are a very good fly.
