Name 1 thing you learned 2024

fishing user avatarLow_Budget_Hooker reply :

First off, I wan't to acknowledge that there are quite a few senior members here who aren't here so much to learn anymore, but nonetheless,...are a continuous flow of info for newer or "growing" anglers.

From answering repetitive questions to sharing local knowledge (doesn't happen on just any board) to actually taking members who are primarily bank anglers, out in your boats.

Well,...Thanks!

We really appreciate your loyalty and dedication, for real guys, thanks alot on behalf of the entire staff and all the members you have affected.

With that said, I would like you all to.............

Name 1 thing you learned and give props to the member you picked it up from.

fishing user avatardink reply :

The Deep-hook Removal Method with diagrams.  A number of the regulars here posted it or links to it so I credit them in general.  Ya'll know who you are.  If you don't know it, LEARN IT!  It is an invaluable trick that will save a lot of bass.

dink

fishing user avatarCJ reply :

I've learned alot from alot of members just by reading their post.

But to name a few:

Dink came down earlier this year in the spring and gave me some needed confidence in jerkbaits.

Chris gave me crankbait tips that I applied with great results, just by reading his informative and detailed post.

Rolo gave me some great advice on offshore structure and taught me words I never knew exsisted.

Whittler taught me everything about painting cranks.

Sorry LBH,you said name 1 thing.I just couldn't help it.Nice thread :)

fishing user avatarDaniel My Brother reply :

Here's a simple one from Catt that's helped me a bunch fishing jigs this year.

The 3 tap rule for fishing jigs

Tap 1 - The bass picks up the jig

Tap 2 - The bass spits out the jig

Tap 3 - I smack you on the back of the head for not setting the hook on the first tap

;D ;D

fishing user avatarGatorbassman reply :

I have spent countless hours staring at hydrilla and other aquatic plants wondering how to fish them. I don't wonder anymore thanks to Catt.

Chris helped me gain confidence in Cranks.

Fletchero, ReelMech, and Alperster helped me become a good rodbuilder before I built my first one.

Randall helped me win my first tournament.

I know that's more than one but I have been on here for a long time.

fishing user avatarRed reply :

how to fish a t-rigged plastic worm....i basically didnt know much about LMB fishing a few months ago...AVID got me going on the t-rig which lead me to catching my fisrt texas LMB...thanks man!!

Cliff

P.S. i also learned tons of stuff from reading all the other great info here from other members

fishing user avatarLow_Budget_Hooker reply :

Everyone, keep in mind that many of the replies here, especially the detailed or specific ones, are things that are coming off the top of someones head.

These "1" thing(s) are things that have brought many anglers to a whole new level  ;)

This is like a "best of..." if you will so if you are here to learn, listen up.

fishing user avatarguest reply :

LBH: For the Vid on Jigging and Avid for coaching me

Honorable mention: ReelMech For Baitcaster set up 101: hugely important for helping me learn how to Bait Cast.

RW: for teaching me to switch from regular Trigg hooks to EWG hooks for Trick Sticks: More hookups

Oh and Brent(Aluuring) and LBH: How to trim a boat and use a foot controled trolling motor

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

What I've learned aint got much to do with fishing but rather friendship.

the_muddy_man: Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.

fishing user avatarfrogtog reply :

RW's post put me on the Fat Ika and ewg hook. I have picked up a little pocket

change with that bait. I have also learned to spell a little better. ( Not perfect just a little better) I have learned how to type with two fingers ( This has really impressed the wife) And I have almost learned not to let my mouth over run my brain.

Oh yea I still don't know were to put these little things ( ' . ! ? : ; ) any help would greatly appreciated.

fishing user avatarslomoe reply :

reelmech-for teaching me how to spool a reel. I know its simple but it helped big time especially since the guy selling me the reel couldn't answer my question.

fishing user avatarnboucher reply :

LBH, for teaching me about Lake Fork and for introducing me to Art Pasley, who taught me to keep it simple, and who introduced me to southern hospitality. (I think Art is a BR member.)

To all the guys (and gals) on the BR Lake Fork trip, who taught me that, even though I usually fish alone, I am also in great company.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Jig fishing.

For the past ten years most of my fishing with artificial lures has been predominately soft plastics. I have been focused on the jig for two years and in the last month or so finally "arrived."

#2 Swimbaits.

Although I have not advanced to the big baits, the smaller plastics (Mattlures Baby Bass and Storm Lures) have produced both size and numbers.

fishing user avatarPanamoka_Bassin reply :

The most important thing I've learned can't be attributed to any one person here since I've heard so many say the same thing:  When using soft plastics, go slow...and whe you think you're going slow enough, slow it down even more.

fishing user avatarsenile1 reply :

My favorite thing would be Catt's post on fishing milfoil, and how Tommy Martin fished his jigs in this stuff.

fishing user avatarSimonSays reply :

The entire forum for turning me on to soft plastics, and how to set a hook properly

RW for his simple but effective method to senko and ika fishing

Sam for his uncanny knowledge of the richmond area

and many others I can't think of right now

fishing user avatarjeremyt reply :

I have learned a lot in the past few months that I have been here and have gotten a lot of advice from many knowledgable people. The thing that sticks out in my mind the most and I will try not to mis quote it is the words of the great LBH. Atleast he is the first I ever heard say it.

" The thing with bass fishing is that you can read, read, read until you are blue in the face but until you get out there and try some of the stuff, they are just words."

How true is that.

fishing user avatar.dsaavedra. reply :

i'd like to give thanks for all the folks in the fishing gear forum (specially you reelmech!) for helping me through my process of finding the right rod and reel i love my citica and im sure i will love my allstar when i purchase it :)

fishing user avatarguest reply :

Oooooooooooooooh,  so much.

Ok

Chris................Very generous with his knowledge about many aspects of bass fishing, especially crankbaits.

Fish Chris.   Made a swimbait believer out of this Florida basser

George Welcome - topwaters in general and the chug bug in particular.  Anytime is a good time to try it.

RW - Many recommendations.  But his Fat Ika posts are BassResource.com classics

LBH - cool guys can have huge hearts

Muddy - friendship over rules geography. Everytime.

Long Mike, FourBizzle, Basshunter 69, Red Torpedo, West palm dude, new2bass, and more.  Old friends and new friends are what make

bassresource.com the absolute best.

 BR>COM ROCKS

fishing user avatarHookemdown. reply :

Crankbaits.  They were the first lure I ever used, but one of our members, Chris, showed me just how effective they can be.

I've also learned that there's still good people out in the world, thanks to BR!

THANKS !

fishing user avatarDavid P reply :

I've learned something from so many people on these boards it's impossible to just name one, or 3 or 10.

If you've taught me something, you know who you are, and thanks!

I will mention Roadwarrior just because I bug him on a daily basis about rods, and he's been right on track with rod suggestions. I love my 844C GLX , thank you RW.

Also, Fourbizz, has given me great advice on rods / reels, and cali fishing!

AintTexan has given me the most in depth, descriptive, and just flat out incredible advice on fishing a jig.

fishing user avatarMALTESE FALCON reply :

Of the many tips I've picked up here that have refined my fishing skills, the one that has helped me the most was roadwarrior's post on fishing senkos for beginners. I had zero success with senkos before that post. I now consider senkos (or ***) my skunk busters. Thanks RW.

Falcon

fishing user avatarSam reply :

My goodness.

Way too much stuff to list.

From George Welcome to Catt to Avid to the Reel Mechanic to Glen and the moderators to all the guys who have offered advice it is just too much stuff to give any one person credit.

Every post is informative, even if you do not agree.

I have fine tuned my fishing so much that there is no way to thank everyone, individually.

Keep on posting, guys; just keep on posting! :)

fishing user avatarJCrzy4Bass reply :

Sam, Basspro48, Dominion Dan and btlva for their help on starting off fishing for smallies. From spots on the Rapidan, Rappahannock, and James to baits as far as tubes, senkos and topwater plugs go. These guys gave me invaluable information that has helped me tremenduosly. I have caught almost 10 smallies in my first 3 outings and landed my pb 1lb 13 oz smallie my last time out and a 1lber at the James the time before. I really had no clue how to get started with this stuff and these guys helped me learn a couple of things that would allow me to start off and be able to catch off the bat. These guys even told me how to cast with current being a factor, how to retrieve, and where to look for the fish. I can't even begin to express how grateful I am. Thanks guys.

Also want to say thanks to anglernfuego, one of my new fishing buds from nova that I met on here for givin' me some tips on the buzzbait and how to work it and for building my confidence up in the frog bait landing some LUNKERS at MY local pond!!! Haha.

One of the biggest thanks of all goes to my dad, who I got into bass fishing on Father's Day by buying him a new quantum combo. Since then he's bought a Lowe's Fishing Boat and always comes to me first as far as spending a day out on the water with him. We've been able to talk and hang out more than we have in a long time and it's cool to know we can do that and bass it up each weekend. Thanks dad.

Lastly thanks to all the mods and senior guys for making this place what it is.  If it wasn't for you guys a lot of people probably wouldn't have hung out here as long or spent as much time as they do on here sharing information.  This is the best forum EVER!!!

fishing user avatargrimlin reply :

RW on the rod action and how to choose which one i need for which bait.Matter of fact,i try to go back to it every now and then to refresh it in my memory.

fishing user avatarDel from philly reply :

Timing is key, i remember someobody answered a post, "Why were you even fishing during the day?"

that made me think, hes right......5-9 is the time to catch fish.....at least at my lakes, so why go during the day??? for frustration??

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another poster gave me the 13 second rule. with senkos and plastics.....let it sit on the bottom for 13 seconds.....before that, i never let them sit like that......my bigge4st bass this year was after the bait sat on the bottom for over a minute

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Everybody on here has done a great jopb teaching me jigs....finally caught a couple on them the other day....jig and pig...i did ok

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

oh darn......you said one thing, didnt you?

Some of us catch our largest fish in the middle of the day.   ::)

The best time for BIG bass is between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM.

A search of this site with yield a quality answer to any bass angling question. This truly is the ultimate resource. :)

fishing user avatarTpayneful reply :

I read a comment on here by Road Warrior about fishing the Senko.  He said that he fishes them "slow and on the bottom".  I had been using them primarily with a lift and drop method and sometimes as a jerkbait.  I used his technique on Friday at lunch and caught my longest documented fish to date.  22 inches long and 13 inches around.  I didn't have a hand scale so I couldn't accurately weigh the fish.  I stepped on a scale with and without the fish and it measured 4lbs.  Thank you Roadwarrior for the tip!

Here is the fish!

Like everyone else there are so many things I've learned; from Glenn & the Moderators down to the newest newbie.

On the subject of fishing: Senkos, Carolina Rigs, Crank Baits, & one of my first discussions it was about the mind set of catching big bass.

He that never changes his opinions, never corrects his mistakes, and will never be wiser on the morrow than he is today.

fishing user avatarjb_adams reply :

I think we all have our favorite members that we know we can count on for good advice and they all come with years of experience to back it up.  Mostly, I'd like to thank BassResource.com for offering a place where us "glassy-eyed" bass addicts can learn from each other.  This site introduced me to my fishing partner and new best friend..."Jolicious" (BassResource.com member).  We sent a few PM's because we were both in the same regional area.  I later went fishing with him & his son one day and the rest is history.  We've been good friends now for about 1.5-2 years now and we fish every chance we can get.

For that, I am very greatful.  Fishing with a friend is even better than fishing alone.  Who else can witness your screw-ups and your success?

As far as no. tip I learned as a newbie would be color selection.  I just wasn't getting it and now it's second nature to me.  There are too many members to give credit for way too many questions from me alone! (haha)  I'd have to say that I personally believe LBH, Avid, RW, Rolo, Raul, ReelMechanic, Fish Chris, & so many others have all personally helped me become a better angler.  Everyone here is a contribution and equally important.

So thanks BassResource.com for being such an awesome group of folks!

Why LBH....

you taught me how to catch fish on a jig lol.  I remember seeing your swimming jig video a year or two back and being awestruck that the darned things actually catch fish.  A few emails later, and you had me on my first jig fish.  Now people PM me for jig advice lol.  So yeah, thanks for introducing me to the one lure that has become my confidence bait and tournament killer lol

fishing user avatar5bass reply :

This thread was a great idea Russ.....its turned out real well.

fishing user avatarAlpster reply :

It's hard to pick out a #1 because I feel like I pick up something useful nearly every time I log on. Where else can you take advantage of literally 1000s of years of experience in one place.

Thanks to all of you!

I've learned that there is no substitute for quality gear and that quality gear can be had at affordable price points. The Bait Monkey err, I mean Raul is responsible for this.

fishing user avatarLCpointerKILLA reply :

Learned that I WAS using the palm tree right!!! haha thanks roadwarrior

fishing user avatarJimzee reply :

Biggest thing I learned this year was not setting the hook so hard while fishing jigs.  My landing ratio while fishing a jig has went from about 60% to about 90%.  Both LBH and RW chimed in this past spring when I was having this problem.  Thanks Guys!!! ;)

That's funny because Raul is responsible for coining the term "Bait Monkey".

fishing user avatarkoko36265 reply :

What a Fat Ika was from RW... Man those things are killer.....I was sold on them when I was fishing a 6 ft. hump with some cut timber.... I started with a 10.5" zoom big ole worm and got nothing.. Switched to the Fat Ika  faded Watermelon color and caught 8  bass ranging from 1 to 4.5 lb from the same hump, most being around 2.5 lbs..... I mean as fast as I threw it out there wham, they would hit it... It was awesome because the guy I was fishing with couldn't figure out why I was catching so many and he was getting nothing... Being the friend I am though I let him in on the secret and we went on to catch about 30 that day

fishing user avatar=Matt 5.0= reply :

LBH for showing me the way into the secret spot, and giving me tips on the jig.  ;)

fishing user avatarmoby bass reply :

The one thing I learned is... this is without a doubt, the greatest bass/fishing learning tool on the entire web.  And thanks everyone for the help, tips, guides, and resources provided. I'm catching more fish and having more fun!

Basspro48 for tips on Pony Pasture and smallmouth fishing.

RW for tips on GYCB Creatures.

Everyone else for inspiring confidence to use braid.

fishing user avatarBass_Akwards reply :

If you guys go back and read all of my posts, which isn't many, perhaps 60 or so, and then read the replies, you'd have an entire, amazing fishing book, to become at very least, an intermediate level fisherman.  Absolutely amazing info guys!

I tried very hard to come up with one thing I've learned from this board and it's highly respected members, that I felt was most important, but just couldn't do it.  One thing led to another, and then another, and then another.

I guess what that tells me is this. The most important thing I learned here, is the fact that fishing is a super complex cocktail of many things.  It's about having a vast knowlege of a particular species of fish, by fishing hard and studying hard about it.  It's about taking the time to read, and listen, to the great fishermen on this board.  Learning about baits, weather conditions, retrievs, water conditions and much much more.  It's not just about bass either.  It's about having experience and knowlege of the very complicated suroundings and environments in which bass live in.

What I've learned mostly from this board however, is that fishing is all about having fun.  It's about camaraderie.

Fishing, like this board, is all about community, family, and sharing knowlege, that can be handed down from one angler to another, and one generation to another.

Thanks for all the help!

t

I picked up some tips on chatterbaits from several members.

Also, had the skirt bands breaking on my jigs and spinnerbaits and was given advice by fluke on the best replacements for them.  (white and black bands, not the ambers)

Great place to pick up tips and the articles at the top of the webpage will set anyone on a right course that takes the time to read them.

My biggest grow this year, without questions, have been in the area of reel mechanics and care. It is now a hobby almost as pleasurable as fishing......thanks to Reelmech, David Green.

Thank you to all the mods for answering my questions with great advice.

Thank you to all members that have helped me become better at fishing.

Also a second shout out to LBH's message about getting out there and practicing what you read on here.

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

I learned about the bait monkey.  ;D

All joking aside, I think I learned more about different techniques and how to apply them to the equipment that is available now a days than anything else.

There are too many members and friends to thank for this, so a big "thank you" to all at Bass Resource.

fishing user avatarhammer84 reply :

Could not even come close to naming things I have learned, too many to list.

Like Lineman I have have been out of bass fishing for 20 years.  Now thanks to my 5 years old sons joy of fishing I'm back and ready to roll.

Jigs and soft platic advice has been off the charts !!!  I hope to get my chance next year to get use of a boat and put some more of the great advice to work !!

One last thing, I participate in many internet communities ( music, guitar, golf ) and this board has one of the best membership groups out there.  Very little flaming  ;), just good constructive advice.

Thanks to all !!
